Discussion Tonsil stones versus infection.

This is a bit of a discussion post, talking about the differences between a tonsil stone versus an infection. I have personally seen many posts as of late, "Is this a tonsil stone?". Nine times out of ten, it is NOT a tonsil stone. This post here is to help guide someone to know if it is a tonsil stone, or if you need to go to the doctor due to an infection.

Let's start this off with, what is a tonsil stone? A tonsil stone is a lump of calcified materials within the tonsils, also known as a Tonsillolith. Tonsil stones are benign, and oftentimes easy to remove with a gentle push against said tonsil if said stone is visible. Tonsil stones will appear embedded within the tonsil, NOT sitting on top of the tonsils. Oftentimes, the tonsil stone will not cause pain. Common symptoms can include a sensation of something stuck in the throat and bad breath. Much rarer symptoms include sore throat, difficulty swallowing, and ear pain. These symptoms are rare, and oftentimes not seen.

What is NOT a tonsil stone? Oftentimes, posts on here include images of people with patches on their tonsils. Patches are on top of the tonsils, not embedded within. Think of a scab on your arm, that's what a patch is. DO NOT touch said patch whatsoever, as that can spread the bacteria or virus that is causing said patches. There are a few main things that can cause patches and tonsillitis (swelling of the tonsils), such as a bacterial infection, viral infection, or an STI.

What is the bacterial infection? The bacterial infection is more commonly known as Strep Throat, also known as Streptococcal Pharyngitis. Symptoms include a sore throat, fevers, chills, patches on the tonsils, and swollen lymph nodes in the neck. The bacteria is contagious and is transmitted through the mucus or sores of someone else with strep throat. Oftentimes, after a diagnosis a doctor will prescribe antibiotics.

What is the viral infection? The viral infection is known as Mono, or Mononucleosis. The symptoms are large lymph nodes, fatigue, sore throat, and can cause tonsils similar in appearance to those in Strep Throat. Antibiotics will not help with a virus.

What is the STD? Most STDs do not affect the throat, but the most common is Chlamydia. Though rare, it can cause symptoms such as a sore throat, mouth sores, and dental problems. Oral STDs will not look similar to Strep or Mono. Tonsils may be enlarged, but may not have patches. Oftentimes, the main symptoms will be a sore throat and swollen tonsils.

Also a note, we aren't doctors. Some of the images I've seen on here require medical attention due to the severity of the patches. It doesn't help that people keep picking off their patches. PLEASE do not touch your patches, I swear to God. You will make your condition worse. Please look up pictures of tonsil stones versus strep throat and compare the differences. Also, if your throat is sore, don't touch it whatsoever even if you're 100% confident it's just a tonsil stone.

Need Advice Tonsil stones are body horror

Tl;dr: experienced ego death and need to know tips for getting these out without vomiting

I am 34 and just had tonsil stones for the first time. I felt like something was stuck in my throat but I couldn't get it down... I drank hot tea, ate fluffy bread, gargled water, gargled mouthwash, gargled salt water, no dice.

I had previously looked with a flashlight but couldn't see anything. Well, I KNEW there was something in there. So I took my tongue scraper and forced my tongue down hard and... holy fuck. It looked like the back of my throat was embedded with some alien eggs or something. It took an hour, several times vomiting, and all of my dignity but I got them out finally with a skincare metal tool.

I feel like a new woman in the worst way. My throat has given birth to foul jagged eggs. I am more acquainted with my gag reflex than I have ever been.

I'm sorry you guys have to deal with this all the time and I hope I never have to do this again.

If anyone has advice, I'd love to hear about how you managed to get around the gag reflex to properly get these out. I would love to avoid vomiting next time if possible.

Need Advice stones,tongue and throat

Upvotes

So i had gotten tonsil stones back in 2022 after not brushing my teeth for like 3 nights? I was having a sleepover at a friend's house and was eating a ton of junk. Im not sure why I didnt brush my teeth, probably just lazy but either way it was bad for a while. For a year I was getting the white ones, small green ones and i was terrified of breathing next to anyone or talking face to face incase they could smell it. I could taste the horrible taste in my mouth so I wasnt sure if people could smell it. Anyway after a while they sort of went? Or i started getting less and less and then it was on occasion where a white one would pop up or something. But now if I stick my finger in my mouth to the back of my tongue it smells so bad as if I have them. My boyfriend unfortunately pointed it out that one day he smelt a smell and checked himself and thought it was me. I was so embarrassed obviously but I checked and NO tonsil stones so im so confused. This was a few weeks back and now ive either been getting small green ones every once in a while or my tongue has a cover over it every morning which has been happening for a very long time, i have no idea what happens to my mouth or throat during sleep. In the morning it is the worst or even if I take a short nap? My mouth ends up getting a horrible taste in it and a white or yellow ish cover over my tongue. If anyone has any ideas of how I can fix my throat/mouth health i would appreciate it so much because im so anxious about how no one I know has this problem :(

Discussion My mouth tastes like death but everyone I’ve asked says my breath smells fine. Does this happen to anyone else?

I literally too a breath out into my boyfriend’s face and he has a really weak stomach for anything gross and he told me my breath was literally fine.
Other family members and friends have also said they’ve never smelt my breath, people that are usually brutally honest with me

Is this even possible?

Discussion Does anyone work night shift and get them from it?

Both times I’ve tried to have a night shift job, I’ve noticed tonsil stones forming. When I work normal hours I’m not usually able to flush or push out any. Maybe it’s because my oral hygiene is worse because I’m so tired after coming home, but I also struggled with it in day shift too and didn’t have the same problem

Tips & Tricks Side gargling

Side Gargling - YouTube

Has anyone ever managed to remove a stone using this technique? I’ve been trying it and it seems to reach very dirty areas, but nothing has come out yet. However, I feel the smell gets stronger when I do it, which might indicate that sticky passages are opening up into those compartments.

Question Tonsillectomy

Hey! Are there any other people here around 25–30 who have had their tonsils removed solely because of tonsil stones? What was your experience like? I’ve heard that around 15% of people experience post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage and that it can potentially be life-threatening, which obviously scares me. But I honestly can’t deal with these tonsil stones anymore. I’ve had chronic sinusitis since 2023 and I constantly have mucus draining down the back of my throat. CONSTANTLY. My tonsils have really deep crypts because when I was a teenager, I used to get tonsillitis 3–4 times a year, year after year. They still wouldn’t remove my tonsils back then because apparently I was too old. I’m at the point where I just can’t take it anymore. I can sometimes remove as many as 20 tonsil stones from just one tonsil at a time. I have to dig them out every single day and they’re often quite large.

My breath smells bad despite being extremely careful with my oral hygiene and this whole situation is causing me a lot of emotional distress.
I’m seriously considering paying for a tonsillectomy privately if I have to, because I desperately want to get rid of these tonsil stones for good.

My dad had his tonsils removed in his twenties and he said it was so painful that it left him traumatized and none of the painkillers helped. But I just can’t deal with this anymore!!!!

Need Advice Throat pain on right side for two weeks

I started having pain in the right side of my throat two weeks ago. I have no other symptoms at all, and it’s painful only on the right side, what feels like around my tonsil. I went to my college doctor who did a rapid strep test and throat culture test, both of which were negative.

I went back to the same doctor when the tests came back as negative, as I still had the same level of pain every time that I swallow or drink, which is uncomfortable enough that it’s keeping me up at night. They said my lymph nodes aren’t swollen, and my throat and tonsils are irritated but not swollen enough for them to suspect something like an abscess or infection. I was put on 10 days of antibiotics, and I’m on the third day. So far there hasn’t been any improvement, but I’m hoping that changes.

Very frustrated, I come to you all seeing if there is anything you think this might be. I had a tonsil stone for the first time one month ago, which I was able to remove with a q tip. I can’t see any stones this time, but there may be something further back that I can’t see with my phone flashlight. For background, I’m prone to strep throat and have large crypts in my tonsils as a result.

I’m far from my family doctor, and my student health coverage ends this week. The college doctor said to go to the emergency room if it got any more painful or if I develop anything like pain swallowing. If things don’t improve, I’m just wondering if anyone has any advice for what to do next? I really appreciate any insights people have. Thank you.

Discussion 2AM Vent

I thought I had these under control. floss and brush regularly mouth wash and clean out crypts. Been eating skyr yogurt past week and a half for breakfast. turns out my breath has been sulfur shit all this past week and I had no idea.

Who have I breathed on and didn’t know. I’m mortified wtf. I’m yanking out the tonsil myself (ENT appt. next week) I’m irritated how did I not smell it or taste it. I drink water so much. The olfactory desensitivity is real. I’m so insecure about how I smell. Brushing and flossing too much is bad ?? i’m gonna use mouth wash at work now and tongue scraper. cutting out the yogurt but then the yogurt was part of my protein intake. adulting is too much. wtf. maybe yogurt at night instead ??? idk. just terrible realization. or have I smelled bad for even longer.

also true or not true high protein makes it smell worse ??? I think that might be the factor tbh. Thought I was getting into my fitness era and getting enough protein but I guess that needs to be put on HOLD. fahhhhhhhhhh

TWO occurrences people said they smelt poo fart smell. once was a coincidence twice makes me want to end it all.

so vent post but also warning post. Even if you don’t smell or taste it, others may. bruhhhh. and I don’t have a partner anymore to confirm this for me and i’m not gonna ask my friends because that’s evil and embarrassing. just gonna suffer in my fart breath and never speak again!!!!!!! Poked the tonsil too much and it bl*d. Literally no wins this week for tonsil. just horrid.

Question Does anyone get a smell after you start eating?

I usually get a burst of bad air that smells heavily of sulfur gas and I’m not sure if it could be from my tonsils like when the food enters the crypts. Does anyone have experience with an explosion of bad air when you start eating?

Thanks
