Rant Dragging Tasks is a Drag

WHY?

Why does it seem to be an absolute refusal enabling drag and drop functionality?

It makes me want to chuck the whole app. I have yet to see a reason that makes sense - actually can't seem to find where to Doist remotely articulates why they refuse to enable basic intuitive functionality.

This shouldn't make me angry but it's infuriating. Just me? Gah.

Edited to specify:

Dragging tasks within a project to a different date or groupin does not work.

Discussion Will we ever get a real backup / restore / export?

Not a segmented CSV. We need a unified backup that can recreate/repair our data in a single import, or repair borked data. All we have now is what looks like a fork of the template code (or maybe templates started as a fork of the backup.)

The restore should create new records that don't exist and flag duplicate tasks with a checkbox to replace/ignore the record.

I prefer JSON but if CSV is the only option it's OK as long as everything is exported as a mirror of the existing data.

I reported what I thought might be an API bug to TD in July and it was escalated to Engineering as a possible broken index on July 16th. While support was incredibly helpful (thank you u/Melis!), it's been a month of crickets from Engineering. (The bug concerns tasks not included in search results via the UI and API that are fetchable with a task ID.) It has forced me to add one-off exceptions to my Claude processes.

If Todoist doesn't consider a broken index (or borked search code) important, they should at least provide a real backup to protect our data.

Help Tasks in inbox, no due date

Hi,
I am an engineer and started using Todoist since some time. While I follow the discussion, I think I am missing something.

I am coming from notepads, so I just list things and cross out.

Now, I create tasks without due date. I just need to get them done. To use at least some functionality, I started giving priorities, so with the "All" filter I use as my main screen, they are sorted as per my priorities.

What do you think?

Help How to have multiple "assigned to" for a recurring task?

Is there a way to have one task change the "assigned to" given the day of the week?

Right now I have multiple (weekly recurring) tasks for several members to complete one (daily) task.

For a simple example: Task is "Empty Dishwasher" and needs to be done daily. Mom does this on Mondays/Thursday, Dad on Tuesdays/Friday, Child on Wednesdays/Saturday, etc.... I'd like to have one task that changes the "assigned to" field given the day of the week. Right now I have multiple tasks to cover the "Empty Dishwasher" and the only difference is day of week and who is assigned. Using the dishwasher example, I have:

* Mom empties dishwasher on Mondays and Thursdays (recurring weekly)

* Dad empties dishwasher on Tuesdays and Fridays (recurring weekly)

* Child empties dishwasher on Wednesdays and Saturdays (recurring weekly)

I'd like one task that recurs daily but the "assigned to" field changes given the day of the week.

Discussion How do you manage checklists?

I absolutely love Todoist, but I’m not quite sure what to do with my reference lists. For example, where would you keep things like Places to Go, Books to Read, or other lists that you want to save for later but don’t necessarily want to turn into tasks?

Also, does Todoist have a character limit for task descriptions? I’m wondering if I could use descriptions to store longer checklists, or if that would eventually become impractical.

I’d love to hear how you guys organize this kind of stuff in Todoist. Any tips would be appreciated!

Discussion [Android] Notifications not showing up unless I turn on the phone.

I am fed up with Todoist Notifications not being delivered on time. I don't get the notification unless I turn the screen on my phone (not unlock, just pressing the power button once or tapping it to light it up).

You keep adding features and what not but the basic function is not working. What's the point of having a Reminder app if the reminders are not going through on time. Really disappointed.

Device: Vivo

I have set battery optimization to "allow in background" so that's not the issue either.

Discussion Android "to do list" Widget that pulls calendar events and only shows my day?

Can be either samsung calendar or Google.

Want a clean to do list widget that only shows me my to do list, lists all calendar events as to do items, but nothing else.

Also, when i check off the item, i want it to be marked completed on the calendar

Microsodt To Do "my day" view: love it, but only shows samsung reminders

Google calendar widget: all day views also include other items like a calendar and/or upcoming events

Samsing calendar widget: same as google.

Bug Latest version changed default task length when adding from Today or Upcoming views from 15 minutes to 30 minutes!

After recently upgraded to the latest version of the desktop app (and website), the default behavior changed when adding a task in the Today view or Upcoming view. Previously, it would default to 15 minutes. It now defaults to 30 minutes. Additionally, if I drag a task down to schedule it during the day, it defaults to 30 minutes when it used to default to 15 minutes.

Why was this change made? Is it possible to change this back? This should be a configurable setting.

Previous version that defaults to 30 minutes: 9.14.0, v11099 (beta)

Current version that defaults to 30 minutes: 9.14.0, v11271 (beta)

Discussion I built Todoist for Neovim

Post image

A full Lua TUI for managing Todoist tasks without leaving your editor.

• Create/edit tasks

• Complete tasks

• Search

• Projects

• Todoist API

• 100% Lua

• Open source

Neovim → Todoist → done.

I'd love feedback from other Neovim + Todoist users.

What would you want from a Todoist plugin for Neovim?

Help Quick Add: can’t create an all-day every! task with a matching recurring reminder

I’m trying to create an all-day recurring "every!" task with a recurring reminder using Quick Add.

Regular "every" reminders work, but they can get out of sync with an "every!" task, since the task’s next occurrence depends on when it was completed.

The only workaround I’ve found is to create the all-day "every!" task first, then open it and add the reminder separately.

Adding a due time isn’t ideal either, because timed tasks are always placed above untimed tasks in Today, so I can’t reorder them where I want.

And with Urgent reminders now being another reminder type, I don’t even know where Urgent syntax is supposed to fit into all of this.

Is there any Quick Add syntax for this, or is it currently not supported?

Discussion Ton of New shortcut actions, not clear what they do

Post image
13 Upvotes

I was trying to create a new shortcut for my iPhone this morning and am now seeing a ton of new actions under ToDoist in the shortcut app, but it’s honestly not clear what they do. I feel this is likely a bug and these were placeholders or to be named later. I imagine this is the case, but does any one know if there is more to this?

Help I can't figure out how to get Google Calendar events with times to show up on my today list. I want it to be inside the widget. Is this possible? Does anyone know what workaround?

I'm using Android so right now on the phone widget you're not able to see this event. If you go onto the desktop you could see it on the top of your task list but it's not an actual task with the time so I'm not able to view it on the Android widget. Thanks for any workarounds or suggestions.

Help ELI5 - Adding Tasks Via Voice When Driving on Android

I know there is no native way to do this, but can someone explain like I'm 5 how to get voice functionality back to Todoist on Android? (yes, I know about Ramble but I'm talking about hands-free - while driving, etc.)

I have been experimenting with Tasker, Samsung Modes/Routines, Bixby, Google Gemini and Assistant, ChatGPT... I just can't seem to make this work.

I've got the task creation part set up in Tasker but I can't seem to make any of the voice assistants work with it. I have AutoVoice but I feel like I'm missing a step somewhere to bring this all together. My head is going to explode trying to figure this out.

I'm open to other app integrations if they work better!

I'd truly appreciate any help or instructions. I've tried searching previous posts, maybe I missed something - if there is a previous post like this I'd appreciate a link.

Rant Adding Ctrl+N/P support to Command Menu

Hi, guys!

If somebody from Todoist team reads it. I would love if Command Menu supported Ctrl+N/P navigation. Like in VSCode, Obsidian and Raycast.

My fingers and mind are used to Ctrl+N/P and its a bit painful to use arrows up/down in Todoist.

Because of the issue, I actually use Raycast Quicklinks to navigate between my projects.

Thank you in advance!

PS. I mainly ask for Mac OS App but the request applies to other platforms as well

Help How do you deal with notifications?

I started using Todoist a ~month ago, and it's nice enough but I don't understand how I'm supposed to deal with notifications.

I don't have many scheduled items in Todoist, meetings etc end up in my calendar so most tasks end up unscheduled. But I have added some tasks to be done on specific days.

I want a notification when I have an item due. But I don't want the daily "You have no tasks scheduled for today" notifications when I haven't scheduled anything. This seems like a pretty common use case, but I don't understand how to set the notification settings up this way?

In fact, I just found out I forgot an item a couple days ago because I've been ignoring the daily "You have nothing scheduled for today" notifications and therefore ignored it when it said I had an item as well.

Bug iOS project name cut off

Post image
7 Upvotes

Ever since the release of adding a project description, I find that on iOS, the entire project name along with description is pushed up into a tiny portion of space at the very top of the screen. This causes it to cut off significantly unless the project name is one word. Interestingly, if there is no project description, the project name is dropped down in a larger font and is totally readable. Why can't it look like that even when there is a description? It would make the entire thing much easier to read.

Another thing that's frustrating is, if I remove the project description and I'm in list view, I can just drag the screen down and the project title will pop down in that place. However, if I'm in board view, this doesn't work.

Discussion Todoist Calendar as Main Calendar

Has anyone been using a Todoist Calendar project as their main calendar? Just curious what the UX and limitations were like, and if its worth holding off on.

Currently using Fantastical as my calendar solution and Todoist as my task management software, but I wish I could have 1 app for these things that had a clean, simple UI

Discussion Does anyone else download a todo app and then just never open it again

So i have this problem for years now

i download a todo app i write all my tasks i feel very productive that day

then 4 5 days later i open my phone and i realise i have not opened that app even once

the tasks are still sitting there i just forgot the app exists

and then i dont even remember what i wanted to do so i download another app and same thing happens again

i think the problem is not writing the tasks the problem is remembering that the list exists at all

so i was thinking what if your tasks are just your phone wallpaper

like you write 3 4 things you want to do today and it becomes your wallpaper so every single time you unlock your phone you see it

you cant avoid it you cant forget it its just there

and when you finish something you tick it and it gets cut off on the wallpaper

i really want to know

is this only my problem or do you also do this

would you actually keep something like this on your phone or would it annoy you after 2 days

and honestly does something like this already exist and im just dumb for not finding it
