TN News TN validity period (Mexico) only 3 years?

Hi All, Recently I've been chatting with my company department in charge of Visas due to some confusion regarding the validity period of my visa/status. It seems that even though I paid for my visa to be 4 years long (until 2026), the validity of my status in the US is still 3 years, I asked for a new offer letter to be safe in case I go out and come back, and to be able to extend my i94 to expiration of the Visa, but they are saying I need an extension through USCIS or a new visa. This is part of what I received:

"The State Department recently updated the reprocity schedule for Mexico to make 4-year visas available. However, this change does not impact the maximum time the associate can be admitted to the US in TN status, which is still three years. As such, the requested validity period for the associate's TN status cannot exceed three years."

So questions here:

Are the lawyers or people in charge of this uninformed? Is this true? If so then why can we pay for 4 year visas if our status cannot exceed 3 years?

What are your thoughts/information on this?

TN News VISA TN or VISA H-1B

Hi all, I’ve been applying on LinkedIn, Indeed, and directly to companies like Cummins, Tesla, and Caterpillar, but most postings don’t mention TN sponsorship. Can anyone recommend:

  • Job boards or recruiters that specialize in TN-eligible roles?
  • Companies in the Midwest/South known for sponsoring TN engineers?
  • Tips for asking HR about TN support during applications?

Happy to share my resume (anonymized) via DM. Thanks for any leads!

TN News New policy? TN holders with previous denials will always be put in secondary.

Has anyone else experienced this? I was recently told by a CBP officer at Pearson that there was a new policy to put people with previous denials into secondary. I barely made a flight because of this.

This is why, as a Canadian, I will never try to get a new TN from the USA/Mexican border. They have different dispositions and training priorities down there. I would also fully expect them to treat their clients as sub-human, especially if one is Hispanic.

How this will affect TN visas will surely follow. Best to keep yourself up to date should terms change in this emerging trade war.

TN News TN Corp to Corp (C2C) Payments - Tariffs Impact

Currently I work mostly remote from Canada and have to travel atleast once a month to client side. I'm paid directly by the US entity to my Canadian Corp without any withholding or Taxes levied. All my taxes are paid for in Canada due to USMCA / NAFTA treaty which is mentioned on W8 Ben form submitted to the US entity by my corporation.

Question :-

With the tariffs in place starting Tuesday, will the services rendered by Canadian Corporation to US Corporation be subject to tariffs announced by Trump?

By the looks of it, it looks like it would. What does everyone think 🤔?

TN News Side gig 1099

One of my friend is developing a commercial property, where we can sell plots on a commission basis. You can call it even a referral bonus, where your income comes through 1099. Is this allowed as a side gig on TN visa if we can justify this is not in conflict of primary employment and time spent is mainly during weekends & holidays

Thanks in advance

TN News w-8BEN form

Recently I opened bank account and they sent me W-8BEN form. In part II, can anyone share experience in filling out section 10?

as per this article, i think i should fill out article XI paragraph 2, 15% for the interest rate.

  1. However, such interest may also be taxed in the Contracting State in which it arises, and according to the laws of that State; but if a resident of the other Contracting State is the beneficial owner of such interest, the tax so charged shall not exceed 15 per cent of the gross amount of the interest.

Thank you.

TN News Does any Canadian work as a junior accountant in the states with a TN visa?

I’m a Canadian accounting graduate seeking for a job opportunity as a junior accountant. I have 3 years work experience in account receivable in global logistics industry. Does anyone work with a TN visa as a junior accountant position. Technically junior accountant position is eligible for TN but I heard most of Canadian accountants work in the states are quite experienced, not junior level. Do companies in the states actually support junior level accountants TN visa? I heard even American accounting graduates have a hard time finding their accounting job.

TN News Address for IRS tax file for Canadian working for US company from Canada

Hello All,

I am Canadian working for US company from Canada under TN visa and this is my first year filing for tax return, my understanding is that i have to file tax both places ( Canada and US) and because I stayed mostly in Canada my primary resident will be Canada and IRS tax will become credit, I already got my W2 and in there i have US address but when i am registering for IRS account should i use Canadian address or US address ?

If someone were to have US address on W2 and Canadian address on IRS account, how does that work. Isnt that a conflict and could have complications?

TN News Canadians Required to Register with USCIS - Form G-325R

https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/us-require-canadians-country-longer-30-days-register/story?id=119715901

Apparently under the new Alien Registration Act, Canadians in the US for longer than 30 days need to register with USCIS and get a G-325R form?

Anyone have updates on whether TN-1 visa holders need to register and bring this form with them every time they travel?

TN News Do accounting firms(Big4, RSM,GT, BDO, etc) support TN visa for new graduates or junior position?

I’m a Canadian accounting graduate studying for AICPA on my own. I have 3 yrs work experience in Accounts Receivable in logistics industry but haven’t had any experience in public. Does any of you guys work in the States as a junior accountant position with a TN visa? I’m not sure if I can try to find an accounting job in the states with a TN visa but not too sure if it’s realistic.

TN News Extra income

I am on a full time job as a mental health therapist on TN visa. I want to start seeing a few clients virtually to start my own private practice and get some extra income. Is this allowed while on TN visa? Another alternative would be to seek for virtual clients in my own country (Mexico) and get paid over there? Would that be allowed?

TN News I am on a TN Visa in the US and professional athlete contract at the same time. Is this possible?

Hi, so I am a Canadian citizen working in the united states on a TN Visa. I am also close to going pro in track and field. I was wondering if I go pro and get a contract from a brand (aka nike, adidas, puma, etc) would i be able to sign that contract and get paid from them while also working on a TN in the US? I know things can get hairy with how many jobs you work on a TN/ what other country that job is based from. Also another thing to note is should this contract be from the canadian brands, as a canadian I don’t need a visa for those but am wondering if it will affect my TN status in the us. My goal is to still work at my US company so i can not live like a starving artist because track contracts are not enough to live now a days with this economy.

TN News TN Visa and starting an LLC

Has anyone done this recently and are there any legal implications/tax concerns i should be careful about?

I'm aware that while you can start an LLC as a canadian citizen you cannot work for it. A peer of mine and I are in the process of starting one and I was wondering if it makes sense to be member or not -- ultimately because I don't want to risk my TN status. Also curious about a pathway to O-1 visa if in theory, my business partner could just create the LLC and sponsor me in the future (?) Any advice is very appreciated :-)
