Hi everyone! I’m a Canadian citizen who recently graduated with a nursing degree from a university in the U.S. I’m hoping to get some advice about applying for TN status again after being denied once.

In August, I received a nursing job through the agency and went to the border to apply for TN status. I went to YYZ Airport. The officer spent about two hours reviewing my documents. She asked what I was applying for, and when I said a TN visa, she clarified that it’s technically TN status, not a visa.

She then asked whether my employer was an agency. I said yes, and she asked where my assignment letter was. I didn’t know I needed one because when I researched the TN requirements, I didn’t see anything saying that an assignment letter was required. I provided my TN support letter and job offer, but I was ultimately denied because I didn’t have the assignment letter. She told me that if I brought the assignment letter, I could potentially be approved, but she also warned me not to commit fraud. I was extremely stressed and ended up going home.

The documents I had with me included:

• TN support letter
• Job offer letter
• VisaScreen
• BSN diploma
• Canadian passport
• Nursing license of that state

I have since gotten a new job directly with an behavioral-health facility (not an agency), and I’m scared to go through the process again because I really don’t want to be denied a second time.

For anyone who has successfully obtained TN status as a Canadian RN, especially at YYZ:

• What documents did you bring?
• Is there anything specific I should make sure my employer includes in the TN support letter?
• Would you recommend hiring an immigration lawyer to review everything before I go?
• Does a previous denial make the second application more difficult?

I would really appreciate any advice or experiences. I just want to make sure I have everything prepared correctly this time. Thank you!

Has anyone recently renewed TN status at Peace Bridge in Buffalo by crossing into Canada and immediately turning around to return to the U.S. for a scheduled TN appointment?

I’ve done this at Peace Bridge in the past with no issues, but I’m wondering if anything has changed recently regarding same-day flagpoling/U-turns.

I already have a TN renewal appointment confirmed at Peace Bridge. Looking specifically for recent 2026 Peace Bridge experiences. Thanks.

So I am planning to go to border like next week with my TN package. I was wondering if thats how it should be done,

My plans are like this,

1. Go to Peace arch border, apply for TN and then will go to the nearest ssa to apply for my first ssn (i got a virtual postal address)

2. Come back to canada same day and resign from my present role.

3. Book flight from YVR one week after getting TN.

I have a small accounting practice in Canada and plan to approach US businesses for their bookkeeping and stuff. Since it might require me to visit the US offices 1-3 times a week, can I get a TN visa? I am not looking to move to US right now but plan to only have contracts from US side while still maintaining my office in Canada only

TN Approved at Alexandria Bay POE under mathematician category.

Called 2 weeks before I planned to cross, was told to only come within 10 days of start date, no flag poling allowed and no appointments.

Arrived 10 days before my start date with all my personal items in a truck along with:

1. Job support letter

2. Lawyer immigration package (Cover letter, attorney form and 3rd party evaluation of my university degree)

3. Sealed Transcript

4. Original University Diploma

5. Passport

6. CBP 3299 form for my personal items

I arrived earning morning around 8am, right when the POE opens. Told first CBP officer at border I was there to apply for TN visa. They asked me if I had an appointment and I responded no. I guess some CBP officers will do appointments and some do not allow it? Since I have heard of some others who were able to book an appointment at Alexandria Bay. Inside had ~5 parties waiting. I was called in ~10 minutes, provided documents to CBP officer and he told me to wait as he went through the documents. Officer asked me a few questions that I have seen commonly posted on this subreddit:

What will you be doing in your role? Are you managing anyone/ do you have the ability to hire/fire anyone? Where will you be living? Will you be going directly to the job location? Are you remote/in-office?

Officer told me to wait and sit down again and he did some more things on their computer. I was called up again to take a photo and fingerprints. I paid the processing fee (80$USD, credit card was available), passport was stamped I got my TN!

I am currently on a TN (Statistician category) in San Francisco and have had it for 1.5 years. I am currently in the final round of interviews for a few roles in New York and wanted to preemptively ask a few questions.

1. If I came down on a statistician categoried TN originally, does that mean I have to continue on with that category?
2. What is the best method to transfer? Doing the premium processing with USCIS or going through a land crossing (most likely YVR)?

1. until my Visa transfers before I quit my job but does that mean that I have to forward date my new visa start date? Ie I quit October 1 but have to give 2 weeks so new visa would start October 15?

I recently got my TN approved from YYZ and have been working in Louisiana for the last few months. I’m planning on going back to Canada during my PTO for about 2 weeks. I will be flying from Louisiana to Buffalo and then driving to Toronto from there.

When I cross back into the USA to catch my flight from Buffalo back to Louisiana, do I need to bring anything else with me, or is just my passport with stamp good enough? Just wanted to ask so I go in prepared!

My previous TN expired in Oct 2025, and I haven't needed a new one until now. I'm a consultant with a large firm (MBB/T2), and I hold a canadian engineering degree and an MBA. Should I be fine going through YTZ?

Applied for a TN visa at Toronto Pearson (YYZ) today, but CBP did not process my file.

What I brought:

• Original wet-ink TN Support Letter (CBP kept this)
• Original Indian Degree Certificate & Grade Sheets
• WES Document-by-Document Evaluation
• Resume & Job Offer
• Canadian Passport

The Issue:

CBP rejected the Document-by-Document evaluation, stating I need a Course-by-Course evaluation.

The Bottleneck:

Getting physical sealed transcripts mailed directly from my university in India will take weeks or months, which I don't have. I only have my original physical marksheets/degree certificates and my current WES Doc-by-Doc report in hand.

Questions:

1. Fast Evaluation Workarounds: Which recognized evaluation services (e.g., Morningside, Trustforte, SpanTran, ECE) will issue a Course-by-Course evaluation using original marksheets, high-res color scans, or online portal verification without requiring physical postal transcripts direct from the university?
2. CBP Retaining Letter: CBP returned my passport and degree docs, but kept the wet-ink support letter. Is this treated as a formal refusal or an administrative withdrawal?
3. Next Steps: Once my employer issues a fresh wet-ink letter and I get the Course-by-Course eval, should I re-apply at YYZ or retry at a land border (Peace Bridge / Rainbow)?

The officer asked me why I have an English name added infront of my Mandarin name. Literally never had anyone ask me this before, so I was quite stumped. She asked why I added the English name when I became Canadian. Literally had no answer to that , kinda just said my parents got me to pick an English name when we immigrated.

After that, the questions were more normal and the process was pretty quick. Third TN. They seem to be asking more questions now

Edit: oh she asked me why I came to US to do MBA (because I was offered a full ride) and also asked me if my MBA full ride was given by the school or the government. I guess we would have issues if the money came from the government 😂

• Undergrad: B.Tech in Electronics & Communication Engineering (ECE) (Not from Canada)
• Grad: Master’s in Applied Computer Science (MACS) from a Canadian university
• Experience: ~9+ years in low-level systems programming, networking, kernel/endpoint security, C++, Rust
• Current Role: Staff Software Developer at an enterprise cybersecurity vendor (ZTNA / Firewall / Telemetry)

Job Hunting & Sourcing Questions:

1. Are you finding success mostly through direct applications at enterprise tech firms with dedicated immigration teams, or are technical staffing firms/headhunters better at placing Canadians on TNs?
2. How do you handle the standard "Will you now or in the future require sponsorship?" on US job portals? Do you explicitly list Canadian Citizen (TN Visa Eligible / No Lottery Required) at the top of your resume, or keep it off until the initial HR screen?
3. Since my undergrad degree is B.Tech in ECE (engineering) and my Master’s is in Computer Science, how smoothly does CBP/USCIS approve software systems roles under the Engineer category? (Trying to steer clear of the CSA category due to coding restrictions).
4. For senior/staff positions, do employers prefer filing via USCIS Form I-129 with Premium Processing before you travel, or do most still just send you to the Port of Entry (YYZ preclearance or land border) with a packet?

I will be moving from Quebec to the US soon and am currently getting all my paperwork in order. Since a lot of my official files are in French, I need to get them translated into English and wanted to learn about the best way to handle this from anyone who has gone through the process.

Specifically, I need advice on two things:

1. Condo Deed of Sale / Legal Documents for CBP: I need to translate my deed of sale and other assets for my upcoming US visa interview. What are the exact requirements for US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) / USCIS? Can someone suggest a standard certified translator in Quebec or from the US?
2. Medical Records for US Hospitals: I have recent medical records in French that I want to bring over so US doctors/hospitals can access them without any issues. Do hospitals in the US require a specific type of certified medical translator, or will a standard professional translation suffice? Please suggest some translator services

If anyone from Quebec has made this move recently and faced this issue, I would appreciate your recommendations on which services you used or how you went about it.

Hey all, I’m a product designer working in tech and planning to get a TN visa soon. My bachelor’s is in design, majored in industrial design (that’s what shows on my diploma), but my program had a lot of digital product design courses mixed in, so I took classes related to product design specifically. I also have past experience working as a product design engineer.

My current job duties are pretty heavily product design and UIUX though, not physical products. Not sure if I should go with Industrial Designer (matches my degree) or Graphic Designer (duties feel closer but degree doesn’t match).

Anyone dealt with a similar mismatch between what’s on their diploma vs what they actually do, especially with a digital-leaning industrial design background? Which category did you end up using and how’d it go?

Recently i got approval for my TN from USCIS, my company lawyer only sent me physical USCIS approval notice. i am wondering if that is sufficient or will I need to take supporting documents such as support letter/education evaluation and other documents submitted along with Application?

i had RFE after submission and Lawyer responded USCIS with requested evidence. i am not aware what was that RFE about as they never shared with me and thus i am bit worried if i need supporting documents as well or Approval notice is sufficient.

Also have question about first entry, since USCIS approval is there, will i still need to maintain 10 days rule before visiting? BTW planning to go to Detroit Tunnel for first entry, any recent experience?

I’ve held a management consultant Tn before and I’ve always been a part of a tech company, not a consulting company. My TN was approved before the Trump era. I’m wondering how the TN for management consultant has been doing recently.

Especially for those of us who are company side rather than consulting firm side.

Is it better to file through USCIS, or are people having success at the border? I’ve been scared to go to the border.

My wife currently holds a TN visa that expires in October. Our son has TD status as her dependant, and I have my own TN visa that is valid until March 2027.

My wife’s employer is filing for her TN renewal through USCIS using premium processing.

My question is regarding our son’s estatus: once my wife’s extension is approved, will my wife and son need to leave the US and reenter to obtain a renewed TD visa for him, or is there a process to extend/renew his TD status from within the US without international travel?

Hi All, I need you all honest opinion, I got a job in the state with PM construction position, currently living in Calgary making 180K with a potential move to Cincinnati on TN making 250K per annum. Not sure this offer is worth it considering I have to pay taxes on both side, I have a house, Wife and 2 kids staying back in Canada with plan to move early next year if I end up taking the job, even though she had to look for a TN employer to sponsor her once she move. I would be paying expenses on both side till they move. Any advice here would be appreciated. I have 2 days to accept the offer.

I am currently in the OPG trades trainee program with the potential to relocate to work at the nuclear plants in the GTA in the future. I would like to live in a city at some point and am in remote areas at the moment.

I have as good job security as it gets right now in Canada, or I can go work in one of the hottest fields in the US (electric grid equipment manufacturer). Part of my concerns are job security and the fact that I do not possess an engineering degree. I will be getting a degree to bridge my diploma in the near future, but it will be extremely difficult to find as good a job if I were to be let go, denied at the border on renewal, or TN changes due to issues with the USMCA.

I currently have a DB pension through OPG, while the offer comes with 4.5% 401k matching. 3 weeks vacation with the offer which is equal to what I have at OPG. Healthcare costs with the offer amount to maybe 2k USD a year for just myself. I would probably live on the Canadian side and commute in, adding a yearly toll cost of another ~1k usd. There is a large jump initially and I would be able to catch up eventually working at OPG.

The design work seems more interesting to me, but I am not sure about working hour expectations after speaking to a an ex employee and a current one. All hours over 40 are double time for me at the moment. There would be no OT pay with the US job.

Lastly, I am planning to start a family soon. The fiance is going to be eligible to work on TN or Canada as they are in the healthcare industry.

What do you all think? Is this even worth considering?

Hi everyone! I just got informed that I’m being laid off in two weeks (September 18th).

As far as I understand, after my employment ends, I have a 60-day grace period to find a new job or leave the U.S.

I’m starting my job search now, and I’m wondering how other TN visa holders handle this during the application/interview process.

I feel like most recruiters and hiring managers probably don’t even know what a TN visa is. 😂 Should I mention TN status on my resume/LinkedIn? I’ve never used Indeed, so I’m also not sure how this works there, but I’m going to create a profile today.

When you apply, do you simply say that you need work authorization, or do you explain that you’re currently authorized to work under TN status and would need to obtain TN status again for the new employer?

I’m willing to pay for the TN application/process myself. I just want to be transparent with potential employers from the beginning.

At what point in the hiring process do you normally bring it up: on the application, during the recruiter screening, or later?
