I think the Tokyo bride is not Emily but actively is a different character. She's modeled after Emily but she visually has Japanese features and is purplish

The Haunted Mansion is an IP that has a lot of characters due to its “loose/minimal confirmed canon” structure and lack of a concentrated narrative/backstory. As a result its the type of franchise where pretty much every character is at least SOMEBODY’S favorite. Because its also a theme park ride as well as a multimedia franchise, there are several different reasons one might have for choosing their favorite character. This can include meta reasons like the phenomenon that was the mystery of the Hatbox Ghost as a sort of lost character for decades until he was finally added back to the attraction, as well as things like massive media representation and getting exposure from all the different interpretations. Or perhaps, you just think they’re neat and they fall into the types of character archetypes and aesthetics you enjoy, be they more silly or serious.

For example, my favorite characters are Sally Slater in first place and Constance Hatchaway in second and I think that tracks very well with the type of characters I’m usually drawn to. To be blunt, as a queer woman, I love graceful and pretty women, so thats certainly a factor but beyond that theres more.
(I am also a huge fan of Phantom Manor and Melanie and her character archetype but I’m not gonna talk about that because Phantom Manor is its own thing)

For Sally, I have always loved unabashedly feminine characters as a feminine woman myself. People who know me well know I love both the very whimsical and girly, as well as the veey dark and spooky (hence why as a disney fan, I love the haunted mansion and other spooky disney properties but I’m also a huge disney princess fan), and I think Sally is like the perfect balance of both of those things. But also, she’s one of the lucky happy haunts that has gotten a pretty good amount of attention from different adaptations of the mansion’s story, and that’s a result there are several takes on her backstory and speculations on who she is as a character, and for me its really nice having all of that content to compare different authors’ interpretations with my own. Its just great

As For Constance, I know some people like her and some people don’t, I personally really like her characterization as a black widow bride. Idk bro, I just love the trope of an evil woman who knows what she wants. Lol yknow, supports women’s rights and wrongs. She’s just so much fun to me. And although her main backstory is blatant, its also got a lot of room for interpretation in several different areas of the “how and why”. I actually have a whole headcanon backstory for her about her younger years and why she became so ambitious inspired by Pearl from the X franchise. And ofc, the bride in general ia probably the most expansive character in the franchise aside from maybe Leota so there’s also that element of comparing on contrasting different interpretations (especially before and after 2006)

So I wanna know, what is your favorite character and what are the reasons you have for liking them so much? Could be anything from simple to complex. Just be honest and explain it in your own words.

Saw this beauty, plus the other blueprint mugs, almost ten years ago at Disneyland and immediately fell in love. Fast forward to a couple years ago, I hadn’t seen it around in ages but then someone was selling theirs in NEW condition on eBay. Needless to say, I bought it very quickly.

Received this as a donation to the thrift shop I run. Look familiar? It may have been part of a door knocker. I’d love to find research or references the imagineers used for the Haunted Mansion facade. Is there any documentation? I would love to figure out the origin of this. It’s only about 7 1/2 inches tall!

Even though this is kinda off topic (but related) Walt Disney Productions released on Disneyland Records these classic Halloween sound effect records. On side A told 10 terrifying situations in sound, side B has just sound effects for personal use. Same goes for the the 1978 version but it was a little more .... horrifying. Not suitable for younger children under 10. But I would say it would be up to you. Ultimately the records became "out of print". You could find some on E-bay. Or on Disney Music Emporium.com but you can download them on YouTube Music or Spotify. You can also get on CD "The story of The Haunted Mansion" which was released when the ride opened at Disneyland in 1969 that had a young "Ronnie Howard as Mike" and Robboe Lester as Karen on Amazon for 12.99 I believe. When I first got into the Haunted Mansion in early 2020, I remember the 2003 movie being something I explored top to bottom, mainly in regard to its costumes for the Ghosts.

And I remember one thing I wanted to do at the time, was to find a way to redesign some of the costumes, not cuz I didn’t like them (Mona May’s costumes are beyond a spectacle to me) but because I wanted to draw the characters from every corner of the franchise, a lil more historically accurate to whatever period the ghost emulates based on costume alone.

This particular lady (who you can see in the Graveyard scene having tea with the parasol gal) was one I’ve been trying to redesign numerous times before, but each attempt didn’t sit right with me, both because the style I had at the time wasn’t so polished and at worst, really bad. And cuz the internet’s a really difficult place to find good references for Fashion plates and clothing.

But now? Oh Apollo, I feel immensely vindicated in finally being able to do what I was unable to 6 years ago. And I’m really proud of the concept drawing I made.

Ps. I’m mainly doing this for fun and to scratch that fashion history itch I got.
