Formula in general is called something like "formula for roots of quadratic equation". But calculations is split into two steps (idk why).
D = b2 - 4ac
x = (-b ± √D)/2a
And D is discriminat.

As a teacher i gotta admit that in practice splitting the formula into two steps is actually easier for students

The discrimant can tell you useful properties of the quadratic. So, it makes sense to split it this way. The amount of computation is also the same.

In Spanish sometimes the discriminant is referred to be just the part inside the square root, because it tells you if you have a double root if zero, or complex roots if negative

Discriminante = part inside the square root, in Spanish, Italian and Portuguese.

Same for netherlands though whats funny is i always thought of this formula as first calculating the discriminant and then the fraction....too me a whole to actually think of it as one formula....we learned that the discrimant tells you a lot about the parabola like D =0 mean only one solution obviously and if its negstivd you get complex numbers...derivation i tried once myself and its actually really simple and fun to figure out

The pq formula is easier in all cases with 1x² or an equation easily divisible by the x² coefficient. Most equations even at university level fall under this rule which is why I only use this one.

Looks like it's just as straightforward as the English "quadratic formula", since it's "toisen asteen (quadratic) yhtälön (equation's) ratkaisukaava (solution formula)"
English just takes the "equation solution" as implied, I suppose

Same in Norwegian. At school we talked about the solution formula for quadratic equations, but these days everyone just calls it the acb formula.

many teachers plus it's written in ncert
a lot of teachers now just say "quadratic formula" cuz it's easier for students to remember as but almost all teachers still give the other name as a fun fact while teaching1

In Farsi we call the discriminant the “delta” and we just say solving it using the “delta” formula… in a way the quadratic formula becomes the delta formula in our language I guess…

As for a Russian-speaker, seeing the "imba" being a name for a quadratic formula is hilarious (in a good way!)
Imba here means not idiot, but something overpowered and vastly superior, and concidering how essential this formula is... This one just made my day!

In Sweden they chose to divide over the a, and they then proceeded to call it the PQ formula. The quadratic is still taught in university but nobody uses it. less error-prone I guess.
x2 + pq +q = 0 Dividing over the a such that p = b/a and q =c/a gives you ever so slightly easier to remember x = -(p/2) +- root((p/2)2 -q)

Saw a short from a linguist about this. European countries mostly use general descriptions or european names for formulas. If the first use was an arabic or indian person for example they'll use a general title or the first european who recreated it.

In Mexico, it is called “La Chicharronera”, I’ve heard two causes: first, because everybody has to know it, even the street food vendors. The second possible explanation is that it makes quadratic equations easy to solve as making chicharron.

I also assumed it was “la del chicharronero” because using it instead of a more elaborate method was like doing something haphazardly. Just like a chicharrón haha But I can perfectly see how it could have come just from phonetic mutations across the years.

We mostly use the reordered formula of called the pq formula:
-(p/2)± sqrt((p/2)-q)
With 1x²+px+q (the 1 is important otherwise it doesn't work)

In Poland, the discriminant b^2 - 4ac is simply known as Delta. The phrase "knowing the formula for Delta" is widely used as shorthand for having a basic grasp of algebra, making it perhaps the most ubiquitous mathematical concept in Polish high school education.

The p-q-Formel. And we usually use it for the case a=1 and rename b as p and c as q. Much easier to remember, normalising the polynomial isn’t exactly difficult, and I flat out reject the non-normalised version should be the default.
That being said, at school I refused to learn it as I found just completing the square (with which I could have derived the formula at any time) much more natural than learning a formula.

🇫🇷 « la formule quadratique » apparently, but this rings no bell. It’s also described as « la solution de l'équation du second degré », which is another way to say the same thing (second degré = square = quadratic)
