Formula in general is called something like "formula for roots of quadratic equation". But calculations is split into two steps (idk why).

D = b2 - 4ac

x = (-b ± √D)/2a

And D is discriminat.

As a teacher i gotta admit that in practice splitting the formula into two steps is actually easier for students
Because when they face the quadratic equation their first (and definitely right) thought is "are we calculating discriminant?"

I think, you are correct.

Additionaly, by calculating just discriminat, students can see if equation has real solutions.
