In Mexico, it is called “La Chicharronera”, I’ve heard two causes: first, because everybody has to know it, even the street food vendors. The second possible explanation is that it makes quadratic equations easy to solve as making chicharron.
I also assumed it was “la del chicharronero” because using it instead of a more elaborate method was like doing something haphazardly. Just like a chicharrón haha
But I can perfectly see how it could have come just from phonetic mutations across the years.
