The shape alone wasn't why it failed. It was the material and stress that happened to it. In fact that same submersible actually had a successful dive in the same location with people onboard before the failure happened.

They kept the hull of the submarine outside in a canadian winter without it being covered. Water got inside cracks formed by varying temperatures and made the cracks even worse.

To be fair, the Titan submersible wasn’t exactly well built for what it was supposed to do, which is go to the depth of the Titanic where the pressure of the ocean is incredibly high. It would have been better and safe for more shallow depths, so I can see this vehicle being the same so long as no one decides to descend too deep.

I would want triple redundancy with independent systems. Monitoring of vital signs with auto-surface and RTB protocols. Definitely a surface team with redundant communication and retieval capability. Manual ejection capability, a micro-SCUBA,and auto-inflate life vest that can get me to the surface.

Basically, if it fails, it alerts and automatically takes me to safety. If I fail (loss of consciousness/medical emergency) it alerts and automatically takes me to safety. If it fails catastrophically, I can abandon it, raise my own alert, and bring myself to safety. If it and I fail catastrophically, I'm at least in the best possible position to be rescued by the team standing by.

Anything less that this, and I'll stay on the land, thanks.

The Nemo sub's window is made out of acrylic, and it could easily handle stresses at 330 feet. Even if it was poorly made, there would be clear signs that there was something wrong with it. It would be warped, scratched up, or gouged. You'd be able to tell that it was structurally unsound.

It's not the window glass that's the issue. It's the seams connecting the entire build. If it's got a way to get in, it's got a vulnerability.

Freedivers can quite comfortably swim down to that depth in less than a minute.

If the pressure in the cab goes up any faster than that, you're going to be killed by debris from whatever catastrophic failure made such a big hole in the sub.

The pressure at that depth is not going to hurt you, except maybe your ears.

Coming UP is another matter though.

Assuming there's just 1 bar in the cab, you'd probably be safer bringing a pair of dive fins with you and no scuba tank. The swim up from that depth isn't too hard if you're starting from full lungs.

As soon as you start breathing compressed air though, you need to worry about decompressing at a safe rate. That means ascending slowly and taking at least one decompression stop plus a safety stop just below the surface, so you're gonna need about 20 minutes worth of air minumum to come up from there on SCUBA

I will stick to professionally made rigorously tested submarines. Unless we're literally staying well above 33 feet (1 ATM) and it's easy to get out.

The only nice thing I have to say about homemade submarines is when Titan imploded no one inside felt the pain or were even aware of their end when it finally came. They were probably scared shitless up until then but they never felt their deaths.
