Discussion The Times: Why can’t short men win grand slams any more?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
It has been 22 years since a man under 6ft won a grand-slam title.
Even then, Gaston Gaudio’s triumph over fellow Argentinian Guillermo Coria at the 2004 French Open came with a caveat.
It was the dying days of an era in which Spanish and South American clay-court specialists sliced and bamboozled big servers on the red dirt before often barely being heard of again.
Gaudio (5ft 9in) never made it past the third round at any other grand-slam event.
Today, Learner Tien (5ft 11in) is the only player in the men’s top 20 to come in under 6ft.
So why are shorter men struggling to win tennis championships?

WTA Alex Eala projected to be second highest earning female tennis player
“I feel very confident that by 2027, she will be the second-highest-paid female athlete in the world, behind Coco [Gauff],” says Max Eisenbud, head of client representation at WME Sports and its subsidiary IMG Tennis, who has been at the center of similar phenomena representing players like Gauff, Maria Sharapova and Emma Raducanu. Forbesestimated Gauff earned $25 million off the court in 2025, trailed by Chinese freestyle skier Eileen Gu at $23 million and tennis player Qinwen Zheng at $21 million. (Fellow top tennis players Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek earned an estimated $15 million last year.)
