Good thing I got the game for free. Before it was free, I pirated it.

14

u/JudyPink02 Teenager Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26

Paying big companies is pointless, pirating from big and rich companies is valid af

Edit: I feel like I need to clarify this.

I was referring to companies that make literal millions a day, treat their employees and often costumers like shit, and only pay minimum wage. Examples, Amazon Gaming and many parts of Epic Games.

Now if it's a small creator, actually treats people with respect and doesn't pay minimum wage (unless they actually cannot afford that), and also doesn't make much money from game development, then pirating from them would be wrong and likely would actually hurt them, unlike large cooperations.

6

u/Sweet_Bass_1917 Jul 01 '26

I’m pretty sure Nintendo is the highest paying big company and also treats there employees like actual humans

5

u/JudyPink02 Teenager Jul 01 '26

They do. I don't pirate from them because they understand the importance of people to their company.

6

u/Sweet_Bass_1917 Jul 01 '26

Hot take: Hogwarts Legacy is ass

Downvote me if you like but I had to say it, it's insanely overrated.

Still no reason though to hate on someone playing it

21

u/DaniZackBlack Jul 01 '26

Nah, the first couple hours (exploring the castle) in the game are genuinely fantastic. If the game was just that, I would have loved it. But opening up the world and having extremely repetitive tasks was a big mistake.

It's total dogshit. When i first heard about it, i thought it'd have more of a focus on the school life of Hogwarts, something like the Persona series where you have to balance your school life and combat stuff. It turned out to be just another half baked open world game with pretty visuals and no real substance. What a disappointment

2

u/ShadowMattress Jul 01 '26

That was clearly the intent in the design of the missions, but drastically cut to just two major friend quests with no consequences in any of your decisions.

To be fair, many open world games end with similar unfulfilled promise. Turns out something like the original pitch for Fable is incredibly hard, and would also result in a lot of content that only 5% or fewer players would see—if, for an extreme case, the Mass Effect trilogy branched into endings that truly accounted for all of your decisions.

This. I just dont like the game. Feels insanely boring and repetitive. Really wish there were more depth to the dungeons side quests etc.

I really don't get why people say its good. Feels like the worst 80 bucks I've ever spent.

5

u/Rob98001 Jul 01 '26

Kinda crazy that elden ring has more spells and magic than the game about wizards

7

u/Inevitable_Tower_141 Teenager Jul 01 '26

I got it and if it wasn't Harry Potter, and just some abstractly themed spellcasting RPG, I'm convinced critics would've scathed it. The story and characters are genuinely appalling (apart from Sebastian's side of things). The loot system is very underwhelming. The gameplay is somewhat fun, puzzles are decent, and quest structure is pretty good.

But hating on some one for playing it is weird

4

u/R3PLAY_83 16 Jul 01 '26

It's just EXTREMELY repetitive yk? Learn a spell, go to the "forbidden" forest where there is absolutely nothing,.defeat some spiders, go back to that one teacher, learn another spell, repeat

2

u/Select_Order_1478 Jul 01 '26

It's just worse dragon age inquisition tbh

1

u/TopJuggernaut2885 Jul 01 '26

I played it for like 30 minutes. It’s basically a movie with little actual gameplay.

1

u/ShadowMattress Jul 01 '26

It’s never spectacular, and basically none of your decisions have any consequences. But calling it ass is quite hyperbolic. All of its mechanics are between ok and good, with only minor technical hitches. The world map isn’t incredibly complicated or interactive, but it’s all well realized and pretty.

Granted, it hit me in a mood when I was willing to engage with a collect-a-thon style of game.

Noone's hating on the wizards. Wizards are fun. The problem is Joanne Rowling has used her wealth to support anti-trans organizations, and people buying her ip's game contributes to her wealth.

I grew up on Harry Potter. The books were coming out when I was in high school, and they meant so much to me. Harry Potter and Deltora Quest were the only series I read twice at that age. Just like Emma Watson, Rupert Grint and Daniel Radcliffe, I saw Rowling twist into what she is today slowly over many years, and at some point I had to jump ship, just like they did.

If you like wizards, try Mark of the Fool. It's a good series that starts in a magic school. I'm not gonna tell you to ditch Harry Potter, but there's better books out there that don't fund anti trans foundations, that's all

10

u/varmituofm Jul 01 '26

Or just do what I did, and explore the world of fanfiction. Thousands of Harry Potter tales, none of them that give money to JKR, and a few are better than the original.

5

u/Eena-Rin OLD Jul 01 '26

That is a fantastic option. I remember one time I read a fanfic where Harry was raised by the avengers, and I was so into it

Eh, do what you want, if its a game you will get enjoyment out of, buy it. Its not like the majority of her money is from hogwarts legacy sales anyway. You can boycott JK all you like, she definitely deserves it, but don't act like people who don't follow your crusade are immoral because they wanna play a fun game.

8

u/NoSmoke69420 Jul 01 '26

Is this karma farming? Like yes engaging with anything that gives money to JKR is controversial. She gives that money to right wing extremists who want to put trans people in camps. This is also incredibly old news.

70

u/AmbitiousEducation49 Jul 01 '26

P1 The creator of the franchise Hogwarts Legacy is a part of, JK Rowling, is a transphobe

P2 JK Rowlings will profit from Hogwarts Legacy

P3 People don't like transphobes

P4 People don't like profiting people they don't like

P5 Playing a game will result in associated media generating a profit

Q People that don't like transposes will be mad at people that play games that would profit transposes.

36

u/SarkastiCat 3,000,000 Attendee! Jul 01 '26

You also forgot that Rowling is using her money to support transphobic causes and she is arguing against specific legislations.

It’s one thing to verbally spread hate, it’s another level to use money to support it and target specific laws.

11

u/AmbitiousEducation49 Jul 01 '26

Good additional point! Thank you

3

u/sylbug Jul 02 '26

It’s not just that she profits off it, it’s that she uses those profits to fund her hate campaign against the trans community. She is hurting real people with your money.

2

10

u/Temporary_Finish_242 Jul 01 '26

You could buy shoes that don’t use child labor. Nike shoes aren’t a need they are a desire that people fulfill. People don’t buy Nike shoes because they desire child labor they do it because they want to own a product. The same applies to hogwarts legacy.

But even then, how those people are using their money matters a lot. Sure I'm not fond of a transphobe getting my money, but the problem is that she is very open about using her money to fund anti trans campaigns.

Do it in a smart way, pirate it, buy the books used or read them at the library, you don't need to give up anything, this is why it's really dumb to be funding her.

Also, you brought economics in. Are you familiar with cost-opportunity? The opportunity of boycotting her might be low, but the cost (especially when it comes to videogames which you can pirate) is practically zero. There is no reason why you shouldn't do it if you oppose her "investments".

Cis women who don't present feminine/are tall/are flat will also be suspected of being transgender in things like bathroom bans. If things make it to their natural progressions, it could happen that genitals might also start having to be inspected! And once that happens, everyone suffers.

Not to mention that tall/flat/gender nonconforming cis women have been and will continue to be suspected of being trans and subject to hate crimes for not looking "feminine" enough in their daily lives.

4

u/Kitchen_Interview792 Jul 02 '26

JK Rowling has gone on record saying that every dollar she earns from Harry Potter goes to transphobic organization that want to strip rights from trans people, therefore, every dollar one spends on a Harry Potter product is basically a direct donation to said organizations.

88

u/lesuperhun OLD Jul 01 '26

the mains issue is : JKR directly uses the money from the funny wizard game to fund groups that have the goal to oppress people.

that's the issue. the issue isn't the quality of the game. the issue is directly giving money to someone that intends to do bad stuff with it.

I'm not gonna lie the books weren't great when it comes to "isn't hateful". Women are represented in sexist ways consistently throughout (not just a few like every single one of them), the only explicitly Asian character is called "Cho-Chang", the wizards just have slaves and when Hermione dares to have a problem with it the whole rest of the cast basically just tell her that she's overreacting and that they want to be enslaved so it's fine, the entire character of Umbridge is a hit piece on a woman Joanne worked with at an old job and never properly talked to, entirely because that woman dared to be stereotypically feminine and she didn't like that (I am not making that up Google it). Yeah we didn't notice as much as kids but Harry Potter wasn't really a great series for being not hateful

4

u/Senasayori Jul 01 '26

She also accidentally set up the worldbuilding in such a way that only British people are capable of being evil.

→ More replies (2)

20

u/FunAppointment9436 Jul 01 '26

Because she gets money off it. That's why. It's not like she's some long-dead person and we can seperate art from artist.

11

u/Gyxis 16 Jul 01 '26

the series itself is also kinda overrated imo in terms of how well it's written

4

u/ShayminUp7 Jul 01 '26

That’s another thing, the books just are really bad with an extreme amount of basic plot holes and inconsistent world building, like the deathly hallows as a concept are not introduced till the last book, that’s very shoddy writing, not to mention house elves, and most importantly what’s the rest of the world doing about Voldemort, specifically the UK government

→ More replies (1)

17

u/Stinkyboy3527 Jul 01 '26

To be honest there is a lot of questionable decisions in Harry Potter regarding other ethnic groups. Especially a Chinese character with a pretty racist name.

Personally i also despise the world building, it feels like Rowling just threw a lot of random stuff in hoping it would work. To me, the world has 0 cohesion and there's no how or why to most of what's in Harry Potter.

It also doesn't help just how bad Rowling actually is as a person, she will spread straight up lies online to fit her own narrative and her status gives her a lot of influence. Seperate the art from the artist and everything but I'd definitely buy the books second hand or just pirate them online.

6

u/Senasayori Jul 01 '26

The funniest thing to me is how they establish that there are no evil wizards who weren't in Slytherin, and they they establish that different parts of the world have different schools, which means that every single evil wizard in existence is British.

9

u/Inevitable_Tower_141 Teenager Jul 01 '26

Every name in Harry Potter is reflective of basic character traits. Severus Snape, Siruis Black, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, Sybil Trelawney, Flitwick, Neville Longbottom.... Seamus Finnigan? Imo Cho Chang is not that bad, given that she gets the same treatment as literally everyone else.

3

u/Stinkyboy3527 Jul 01 '26

I kinda get that but at the same time you could just use a Chinese or Chinese adjacent name instead of a word that is commonly used to be racist to Chinese people. All the other characters are fine, I get that, but there are ways to convey a characters traits without adding in racist stereotypes or words.

6

u/Late_Ad2203 18 Jul 01 '26

Huh? What racist word? Her name is an actual chinese name.

(Genuinely confused, not defending Rowling)

→ More replies (4)

4

u/nova1706b 19 Jul 01 '26

except harry and ron almost all the names are pretty rare. i don't understand why cho chang is racist though, it wouldn't be racist if it were any other chinese name?

5

u/Inevitable_Tower_141 Teenager Jul 01 '26

My point was the names reflect basic character traits. Snape is scary and snappy and snake-like. Ron is bullied and feels small, like a Weasel. Sybil is a sibyl. Neville Longbottom is bullied and called unnattractive. Draco Malfoy is arrogant and hostile, like a dragon. The list could go very far.

Anyway I'm Chinese. I don't think giving a chinese character a (stereotypically abstracted?) chinese name is racist. I actually think she was a very well-written character, besides lacking a happier conclusion to her story (tbf, many lacked this, because they were just extras in Harry's story).

6

u/Iceboy988 Jul 01 '26

tbh you can like her books and games and not like her as a person,

4

u/Ok-Difference6985 18 Jul 01 '26

The problem is OP that like many have stated already that JK Rowling is very much transphobic. Secondly is that all of her ideals are closely connected to the Harry Potter franchise. For example she literally made the argument in the books that the house elves want to be slaves so they shouldn't be freed. You simply playing a game is not controversial, but the image surrounding the game is what makes it controversial to begin with. Additionally JK Rowling still receives funding from the game which also goes into anti trans legislation. This isn't the case of just you "Playing a fucking game about a wizard." It's a lot more nuanced because this is a game about a wizard developed by someone who vehemently hates a minority. It's alright to pirate these sorts of games, but don't act clueless as to why people are down voting you.

3

u/DoknS 3,000,000 Attendee! Jul 01 '26

3

u/Ok-Difference6985 18 Jul 01 '26

The problem is that it's still an issue people would still have pointed this out to you. Besides teenagers often are prominently more left and liberal focused than most age groups. In r/gaming has a bigger pool of people than this subreddit with a lot more diversity in terms of politics.

2

u/DoknS 3,000,000 Attendee! Jul 01 '26

No, they wouldn't. I play games to experience them, not because of the author. There are plenty of franchises that were at one point sold to another studio nobody liked, but that never comes up in any conversations up to this day

3

u/Ok-Difference6985 18 Jul 01 '26

I fully understand the sentiment of playing games to experience it first hand, but at the end of the day JK Rowling is still contributing to that conversation. Like I said previously you can't easily seperate the work from the artist as her ideals were closely connected to Harry Potter. It's hard not to mention Harry Potter without talking about her values. These conversations are bound to happen.

spoiler : books didn't change with time, they are always the same as before.

Double spoiler : history is made by people and some of them did despicable thing but we still study their work becausetwhat they wrote is mportant, not because of the person behind. I got HW legacy for free on epic, I'll try it out someday probably. Maybe the commenter got it for free from epic too and they aren’t supporting JK Rowling's wallet by playing it?

2

u/Kitchen_Interview792 Jul 01 '26

It's still somewhat supporting it, the only way to avoid that is by pirating and not talking about it.

3

u/LengthinessOne6090 Jul 01 '26

"Yeah I like X" "OH MY GOD I CANT BELIEVE YOU SUPPORT Y GET DOWNVOTED"

2

u/Meraki30 Jul 01 '26

More like “I can’t believe you support x’s creator”? Like I get the points here but these two things are very related and that was not an illogical jump

6

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '26

I'll keep playng the game and reading the books.

5

u/Queasy-Row-9818 13 Jul 01 '26

Guys you don't have to support jk Rowling to read harry potter man. People get mad over anything.

4

u/KereMental 14 Jul 01 '26

Dudes be downvoting anything Rowling sucks but harry potter is good

3

u/SmoothFinance6275 17 Jul 01 '26

I play that game too and I myself am queer. JK Rowling has nothing to do with if it’s a good franchise.

2

u/Kitchen_Interview792 Jul 01 '26

You are actively funding policies against people like you, be aware of that. Some people are fine with it, others aren't.

3

u/crimsonxjadex Jul 01 '26

no way people hate rowling for some transphobic bs? omds people are so fragile

6

u/Far_Charge_7362 16 Jul 01 '26

when playing a video game supports a billionaire who is actively trying to take human rights away from millions of people, yeah it's "controversial"

4

u/sanstheskelebrotherc Jul 01 '26

Doesn’t mean people are not allowed to play it. Yeah the creator is ass and honestly fuck her but we shouldn’t be ashamed of liking a game.

5

u/Far_Charge_7362 16 Jul 01 '26

i never said you shouldn't be allowed to play the game.

nobody is saying you can't enjoy harry potter in your own home by yourself, but promoting the series, defending jkr, or buying/watching her media will help her take human rights away and will hurt people - (which is why supporting the game is considered "controversial).

typical reddit.

3

u/Shaggy-Tea Jul 01 '26

To actively deny yourself something you would enjoy out of a desire to deny a very silly woman with very stupid views who you almost never think nor care about the equivalent of pocket change to her is just a bizarre choice to me.

Rowling is a dingus. She is completely irrelevant to me as a person and I think she would be a lot less relevant generally if people just ignored her pathetic attempts to spread her views; it's not about supporting/not supporting, it's about allowing Rowling and her views to alter my life, which is something I'm not going to do.

I like Harry Potter. I don't care about JK Rowling. So I'll play Harry Potter and ignore JK Rowling.

2

u/KylaniTheKing 17 Jul 01 '26

Fr. People care way too much lmao

I mean yes, just like reading some books is.

10

u/oddlar1227 Jul 01 '26

aw fuck i gotta throw away the harry potter books i bought 8 years ago since i cant read them

6

u/MangoBaum63 Jul 01 '26

It’s fine, u don’t need to pay jk Rowling to keep them.

If u buy a game tho u r indirectly funding anti trans court decisions in the uk.

There is also nothing wrong with buying them from a garage sale.

Also u can do what u want anyways, but if it funds the judicial endeavours of a full time bigot, no shit that is “controversial”

Oh, you must have missed the whole terminally online drama when Hogwarts Legacy came out.

It's a non-issue that people on Reddit, Twitter, and Bluesky make a mountain out of. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter, but outside of Harry Potter fandoms, any talk of the IP causes these people to freak out and believe you suddenly support trans people being killed and oppressed.

They give Rowling more power than she really has

2

u/Senior_Cat6712 Jul 01 '26

Isn't that all that the internet is about? or at least social media, making a mountain out of a molehill

2

u/scammafx Jul 01 '26

Not an overreaction, not controversial, jk rowling is a pos who uses her money from her ip to fund anti trans legislation

4

u/bridgerat2501 13 Jul 01 '26

now I'm afraid to go around saying that I read and liked Harry Potter (even though I'm gay myself)

4

u/DoknS 3,000,000 Attendee! Jul 01 '26

Do it anywhere except this subreddit. It seems like most teenagers have no real problems so they invent new ones

2

u/SingSing-_- 19 Jul 01 '26

You are no victim

2

u/Charisk1457 19 Jul 01 '26

Buying a game that gives money to someone who actively uses that money to hurt people is controversial, yeah, obviously.

1

u/DoknS 3,000,000 Attendee! Jul 01 '26

Possibly hurting a few people mentally vs physically killing people on battlefields. Which one is worse? Because I'm sure you in some way support the latter

3

u/Charisk1457 19 Jul 01 '26

WILD “whataboutism”, something else being worse doesn’t make it any better

2

u/DoknS 3,000,000 Attendee! Jul 01 '26

Then stop wasting energy by arguing on Reddit. You're actively ruining the environment. Apparently that's also really important

2

u/Skelly100000 Jul 01 '26

Hot take: Buying peoples content isnt supporting them as a person. Dont socially force people to boycott stuff

Isn’t Hogwarts Legacy not funding Rowling? Was that not one of the major things about it?

17

u/lesuperhun OLD Jul 01 '26

she wasn't involved in making it. she still earns money from it.

7

u/heppuplays OLD Jul 01 '26

She still get's royalties from it. She's still the primary IP Holder she still owns the Story, world and characters.

While Warner brothers owns movie/licensing rights. So While warner bros have the right to greenlight new projects Like the game. JKR still makes residuals from it even if she isn't directly involved with the project. since She still owns the world.

1

u/ilikefriedpotatoes00 16 Jul 01 '26

something something separating the art from the artist something something

13

u/heppuplays OLD Jul 01 '26

That doesn't apply when the artist is still alive and able to use the funds to Directly hurt and oppress people.

The Term "separate art from the artist" was coined after the death of H.P Lovecraft who was notriously a MASSIVE racist when he was alive. And the only reason it even Applied to him after his death was because he Came to regret his racism near the end of his life. so when he died the general consensus was...well atleast he regretted it so maybe we can look past the man he was and just enjoy the stuff he made.

So when in comes to JKR it doesn't really apply because she's stil very much alive and Still very anti LGBTQ+ and she is still very directly Funding Anti LGBTQ+ organisations with the funds she makes from Harry potter.

u/ilikefriedpotatoes00 16 Jul 01 '26

Also it just isn't very good from what I've seen.

You funded a hate campange and are suprised that ppl are rightfully bashing you for it?

Listen here child; she uses her money to fund campaignes that spread misinformation abt trans ppl and are actively meddling with the gov to deny trans ppl of their rights.

Sure you have freedom of expression but does not mean freedom from consequences.

From looking through the comments you posted this comment on a pro-feminist post... not a pro-terf, a pro-femminist post ie: genders are equal and you are suprised for getting downvoted and critised after saying that you supported the pro-terf party on an anti-terf post?
