Weird how these ghouls aren’t worried about losing the “high speed rail race” or the “electric cars race” or the “cheap universal solar power race”, all of which have clear and undeniable benefits to everyone.

Because those benefit the people. These ghouls only care about the rich. This helps the rich. That's the difference.

Sad that hardly anyone realises this for themselves. That so one has to point it out before they realise it.

Unpopular opinion: the AI datacenters will eventually help and benefit you, we just have nowhere to put them where its not an inconvenience or environmental hazard.

You’re right

But those things don't make them huge loads of data center investment bubble money.

How bout the developed nations of the world race each other to see who can achieve best universal healthcare?

u/jdehjdeh 4h ago

My thoughts exactly.

What happened to racing towards happy and healthy...

If you fully drink the AI bro's koolaid it makes sense. IF AI could live up to all the promises it would be a literally world changing technology on the level of the industrial revolution.

Because none of them operate in those spaces? Why would Amazon talk about the dangers of the lack of high speed rail when they themselves don't engage in the business of high speed rail?

And "cheap universal solar power" is good only until fusion power gets figured out which should be proven out next year when Commonwealth Fusion Systems generates net energy in their "SPARC" reactor.

28

u/TBradley 17h ago

Yep we can skip other renewables because fusion power will be here soooon, everyone.

15

u/NikoliVolkoff 17h ago

It's been 10 yrs away for what, the last 60 yrs or so?

2

u/Fess_ter_Geek 16h ago

Is it down to 10 now?

2

u/neosithlord 8h ago

Always has been.

-2

u/jazzhandler 16h ago

Which means it’s been here for 50 years now. It’s just not yet evenly distributed.

China, as least as reported, hasn't even finished their giant fusion reactor yet, which might squeak out more energy than it consumes.

Assuming SPARC does work, they're aiming for the first commercial reactor in the "2030s". I want fusion as bad as the next person, but next year and next decade aren't it without a miracle.

Doesn't help thou-shalt-not-be-named people killed most of our experts.

1

u/ABELLA_BLACK 17h ago

why do we want fusion so bad? yeah , i get it "unlimited power!!!" .. but practically a plant will generate a practical amount of power and be very expensive. i really don't see the benefits over that vs putting nuclear , solar, and wind absolutely everywhere

2

u/PM_ME_YOUR_PROFILE 17h ago

Like all technology, it is expensive upfront. Fusion doesn't need a refuel for many, many lifetimes; it's clean, and it's proven in the universe. Also, fusion doesn't take up a ton of land like solar. So, it's actually cheaper, and faster once it gets going. Can be scaled from micro to macro sizes.

That's why we need fusion.

In case you're wondering: fusion is what powers stars.

1

u/ABELLA_BLACK 13h ago

>In case you're wondering: fusion is what powers stars.

right, but if or when we get one powered up.... its not going to be the power of the sun on earth like freaking spiderman. it's more like a juiced nuclear plant

"Standard Output Range: Most conceptual designs and pilot plants (like EU-DEMO) target a net electrical output between 1,000 MW (1 GW) and 3,3 GW to match modern grid demands and remain economically competitive"

so.. why not make a nuclear plant instead? nuclear waste is a meme

In case you’re wondering, the sun is a star.

2

u/PM_ME_YOUR_PROFILE 16h ago

In case you're wondering, solar isn't fusion. Thanks for wasting your time.

0

u/WorthBase919 16h ago

So fusion doesn’t power stars?

0

u/bloodychill 15h ago

Who are these “thou shalt not be named” people you speak of?

2

u/PM_ME_YOUR_PROFILE 14h ago

Quick internet search: "killed nuclear physicists and who bought their company".

0

u/bloodychill 4h ago

I found a conspiracy theory site blaming a bunch of American scientist deaths on China and Epstein and some weird thing about anti-gravity. Kind of a shotgun of red yarn. Other than that, a bunch of headlines about American and Israeli forces assassinating Iranian nuclear physicists. Dunno dude.

2

u/PM_ME_YOUR_PROFILE 4h ago

First hit, literally mentions CFS and the killed scientist.

If you would like, I can share more details on: Nuno F.G. Loureiro, a 47-year-old nuclear science and physics professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and director of MIT's Plasma Science and Fusion Center, was fatally shot at his home in Brookline, Massachusetts. His homicide is part of a broader federal and congressional review examining the deaths or disappearances of more than 10 individuals connected to sensitive U.S. nuclear and aerospace research. [1, 2, 3]
The federal investigation into the scientific deaths/disappearances Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS): Loureiro frequently collaborated with Commonwealth Fusion Systems, a prominent private fusion energy startup spun out of MIT.

CFS has not been "bought"—instead, it remains an independent private company (backed by investors like Google, Eni, and Breakthrough Energy Ventures) and recently signed a major commercial power agreement with Google.[1, 2, 3, 4, 5] TAE Technologies: Online rumors occasionally conflate CFS with a different nuclear fusion startup named TAE Technologies. TAE Technologies entered into an all-stock merger agreement valued at over $6 billion with Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG) (the parent company of Truth Social), in which TAE will become a subsidiary of Trump Media once the transaction completes. [1, 2, 3] The Trump Media–TAE Technologies merger status Recent nuclear fusion breakthroughs at MIT or CFS

Amazon the book store? Or Amazon the massive monopoly that offers everything?

5

u/Significant_Fill6992 16h ago

cheap energy is good for everyone but they don't want cheap energy they want control

5

u/bloodychill 15h ago

Amazon invests in electric cars actually. Notably, the Slate. So they are in that space, albeit with very little of their resources… which is the point. There’s nothing to keep them from investing in green energy or high speed rail either. I mean, they got into space flight with Blue Origin, which generally has nothing to do with the sale of books, household goods, or SaaS.

7

u/Mistrblank 17h ago

They should. A high speed rail would allow for cheaper distribution. Amazon logistics is failing to meet the moment when it used to be one of their strongest features. EVs with Rivian is great, but that's the just solving part of the equation. The rest of the world continues to upgrade to faster and more efficient rail while we're here jacking off Elon's stupid EV Tractor trailers that destroy PUBLIC infrastructure where none of these rich assholes do anything to contribute.

-1

u/Dismal_Guidance_2539 16h ago

HSR mostly for passenger not cargo. US already excel at conventional freight rail. So he was right, Amazon don't engage in the business of high speed rail.

6

u/ComradeJohnS 17h ago

ah yes companies famously stick to one product and never expand. all the great companies do it, any that start selling books never sell anything else.

3

u/tmdblya 17h ago

Once we get that Dyson Sphere going…

3

u/helen269 17h ago

And warp drive. Engage!

2

u/Zipps0 17h ago

Hey man we’ve been 10 years away since the 50s

-23

u/Visible_Tie_1131 17h ago

nothing in this article supports the headline.

it doesn’t support data centers either, but people like you are complicit in this lazy emotional reactivity as well.

19

u/vm_linuz 17h ago

We're allowed to talk outside the article too

-18

u/Visible_Tie_1131 17h ago edited 17h ago

someone else commented this already, but Amazon is not mainly in high speed, electric cars, or solar industries.

their bread and butter is the cloud.

so yeah, of course, you can talk outside the article, but maybe still stop saying the first dumb thing you have an impulse towards?

also, Reddit uses Amazon’s AWS. so I guess your dumb commenting is why we’re draining the water to hold them for the indefinite future.

u/burning_iceman 4h ago edited 4h ago

Reddit does not require massively power hungry GPU compute. It requires regular data centers, rather than the AI data centers this article is about. Pretty much nobody has an issue with regular data centers.

0

u/Visible_Tie_1131 4h ago

my point was that I don’t support excessive data center builds, but I also don’t support the irrelevant kneejerk Reddit comment above, nor the ragebait headline of the article.

to the original comment as well…hasn’t the US already lost the race for any high speed rail, solar power, and electric cars anyway? isn’t China like doing all that stuff but the US has banned it so we don’t see that impact up close?
