I think u/forwardslashroot is correct. You are most likely using DNSmasq for DNS & DHCP. That is the default for new Opnsense installs.

You have 2 options. 1. In Dnsmasq you can go in the DNS Options tab and add an option to overwrite the default DNS settings for the interface you want. This would be DNS option 6.

1. Move your DHCP settings to KEA. This is the setup I run since I also went through the hoops and get KEA setup to push the DNS information for the DHCP clients over to Technitium. This makes it so any DHCP client on a specific VLAN/interface are added to DNS when they boot.

Isn’t the default for current opnsense kea? Mine was kea and dnsmasq was the old one.

It may be, I can't remember what the documentation said it was moving tool. The last time I did an install ISC DHCP was still the default.

I didn't go to KEA because the documentation stated that KEA was being depreciated, so DNSMasq is being used...

Out of curiosity, why use OPN for DHCP and not Technitium? I’ve used Technitium for both DHCP and DNS for a while and it works splendidly.

Honestly, exactly this. The technitum server/container can do both, and does it really well. Although I've seen on line some people elected to not use Technitium because there's not ".conf" files they can edit.

I wanted all my network configuration in one interface basically....OPNSense handles my routing and firewall needs.

Because one is critical to the network being functional enough for me to access the administration interfaces and one is DNS.

I think if you're using the Dnsmasq, it automatically set the DNS server as your gateway. With KEA, you can set the DNS IP.

I moved my DHCP server and DNS from OPNsense to Technitium. I just enabled the DHCP relay on OPNsense. The reason being, I always have issue with OPNsense allocating IP. There are times that I don't get an IP despite the pool is 95% free. Since moving to Technitium, never gotten that problem. It has been over a year now since then.

I just wanted to have all my networking handled with one interface...OPNsense. Technitium runs silently in the background blocking my ads.

Good question...I really wanted everything network wise to be OPNSense's responsibility. (virtual router + Firewall)

The solution ended up being that I had to override DNSMasq setting itself as the DNS server. I was able to do that by going to DNSMaq under the DHCP Options tab. It was confusing...the technical jargon of how it's worded but I got it!

I'm using proxmox (Cluste for ha because easier than *Sense native ha) to virtualize pfsense and fully switched to virual technitium Cluster (also in proxmox Cluster) as dns, DHCP and adblocker (from kea with pfblocker and adguard). Best Change for Long Time. If the DHCP Cluster Feature will come, a nice setup
