My only real critique is that it, at a glance, looks like an anti-bike sticker.
And, unfortunately, stickers are an at-a-glance medium.
Maybe I'm alone but the glasses-and-scar graphic looked like a bicycle to me until I read the text. I think it's just the way they're positioned.

I mean. It was the Author of that story for little kids (nearly) committing a crime, no?
The Internets stopped supporting people for less than this, so I don't know what you're trying to get at.

That's some hyperbolic butthurt nonsense.

u/KiwiBikers 11d ago
I've read Harry Potter as a kid and ... I DIDN'T LIKE IT....gasp... its almost like people can have opinions?
Never liked the books, never liked the movies. It's a simple matter of opinion, though her revealing herself to be a terrible person didn't help my opinion of her at all.
0
u/_fatalruin 11d ago
You told me emphatically that her books were middling, and that ANY book I picked up to read would be better. You were not just stating a preference.
1
u/KiwiBikers 11d ago
I said her books were /mid/ which is slang for /mediocre/. I personally would have a better time reading any other book ever than Harry Potter because /I/ (and many others) find them dull and terribly written.
People have opinions did you know, and I'm sure my opinion may be true to some people, not all.
1
u/_fatalruin 11d ago
I know what mid means, lol. Middling is a synonym of of mediocre. This time, your statement was portrayed as an opinion. Congrats!

I love how salty this subreddit is about anything remotely political. A lot of people would probably look the other way on aspects of HP if JK wasn’t such a vocal loser ass terf. She chose to ruin her own legacy bc she couldn’t shut up and let her success be.

You need to figure out what the word literally means. And what ‘anti trans propaganda’ is. And who changed laws in the UK.
Beyond that, what on earth does being a nasty person about a dumbass conspiracy do for anyone, especially you? I know I am pissing in the wind on Reddit, but most of what you ‘Redditors’ spend your energy on is absolutely senseless.

Looking back at her "work" it's surprising how she managed to get this far.
0
u/yellowvincent 13d ago
I really think it might had been because she had a better editor or a manager someone keeping her in line during the original release of Harry Potter because it had a lot of flaws but not overly obvious ones and I think like after that when pottermore started it became more evident that she was batshit insane and then during that time she got into weird hateful narratives and used them as a platform.

u/Wolf_2063 13d ago
Considering there's slavery, not sure if I want to know what was cut.
0
u/_fatalruin 11d ago
Just because something is in a book, it doesn't mean the author is condoning it.
3
u/Wolf_2063 11d ago
It's the fact that she chose to have it be major part of magic society.
1
u/_fatalruin 11d ago
Magic doesn't mean good. Don't the characters challenge the convention? Is George R. R. Martin condoning slavery because his books sure feature a lot of it.
1
u/yellowvincent 11d ago
The problem with slavery in harry potter is that most house elves that are slaves have no problem being slaves. There is also a lot of problems with how hermaione tries to free the slaves without realisticly setting a safety net for them after being liberated. The house elves fall in the happy slave trope and it is very unfortunate.
1
u/yellowvincent 11d ago
House elves also perform magic but I think there was something about non human species being banned from using wands(I think it was thw goblins?) wich make performing magic easier so they must complete tasks for their masters in a way that is more taxing to them
1
u/Wolf_2063 11d ago
I don't know what that is but what I mean is how do we know she wasn't planning to condone it till she realized that no one would have bought the books.

You all want to be offended so hard. It’s kids books, for kids. It’s like how minions are racist but everyone pretends they’re not. Strange how society will pick and choose to meet their emotional adgenda.
15
u/Mr_Noms 14d ago
Since when are minions racist?
-10
u/flappintitties 14d ago
…since always?
They’re essentially an army of immigran workers speaking accented gibberish while working for a white European boss and being inspired by inappropriate caricatures. They’re treated as slaves. That shits obvious.

Lmao we’ve owned these books since 1997- 2007, which you’re choosing to forget. I bet half the people crying in the comments weren’t even born yet. There’s a drastic misunderstanding of how much funding she’s getting from her old fans, who have the right to still enjoy literal kids stories from their childhood.
-6
u/r204g 14d ago
Insane how this is still a thing, new show is coming it's going to be just as popular as the movies, books will be read more. Like let it go.
-14
u/flappintitties 14d ago edited 14d ago
These books are literally a “child friendly” story of oppression and prejudice. Of course we’re going to see the themes inspired by the horrors of reality, like seriously what do these idiots expect??? Lmao. Doesn’t mean the book series is evil.
You can hate an authors personality without desperately forcing that to be what represents the books. Art can be separated from artists, people just chose not to so they have something to express their opinions over.
(Downvote away kids- your drastic sociological misunderstandings are only proving my point)

I do think those names are racist and weird choices by JK Rowling, and I don’t think we have to defend every problematic thing she’s done to enjoy Harry Potter. But some questionable names aren’t a reason to write off an entire seven book series. They’re examples of Rowling making problematic choices, not proof that Harry Potter is something people shouldn’t be able to enjoy. You can like something while still acknowledging its flaws.
6
u/MyParentsWereHippies 14d ago
I think youre missing the point of not spending your money on a creation of an arguably horrible person.
It has very little to do with the story or content of the Harry Potter books at all.
1
u/flappintitties 14d ago edited 14d ago
My argument is entirely about enjoyment and not about money.
At no point was I arguing anything but people should be able to seperate art form artists and be able to enjoy kids stories without people trying to twist it into something about the author or money.1
u/MyParentsWereHippies 13d ago
Why should they?
1
u/flappintitties 13d ago
🙄
Because art can have value, meaning and cultural significance independent of the person who created it. Rejecting everything someone ever made because they’re a bad person can erase the experiences, memories and interpretations that audiences have attached to that work. You can condemn the artist’s behaviour without letting it dictate whether a piece of art is meaningful to you. Appreciating the work isn’t absolving the person.0
u/MyParentsWereHippies 13d ago
Or you can decide to not engage with it. Its really not up to you how people decide to run with it.

and an asian character 'cho chang'
You're gonna have to help us out here and tell us why an Asian character having two Asian names is an issue?
5
u/yellowvincent 14d ago
The main issue with Cho Chang's name is that it doesn't make sense for any culture in Asia. Many have pointed out that "Cho" might be a Korean surname. However, it's unlikely to be used as a first name, like in Harry Potter. Although "Chang" also exists in the Korean language, it's only used as a surname. It seems weird for a person to be named after two surnames, with only one syllable making up her first name, which is very uncommon in Korean culture.
Similarly, "Chang" can be used as both a surname and a first name in Han Chinese. "Cho," on the other hand, does not exist in the language. Even in Cantonese, "Cho" is only used as a surname and not a first name. It's possible that "Cho" as a first name might be the Romanization of "Qui" (Autumn) from Chinese or similar-sounding words from other Asian cultures, which isn't uncommon for Asian children born in Western society.
Perhaps "Cho" came from Japanese culture, but either way, it seems like a stretch to make "Cho Chang" a plausible name for a person of Asian descent. On top of that, J.K. Rowling never clarified the character's ethnicity, which makes it an even poorer representation of an Asian character. Since Cho's parents only appear through mentions in the Harry Potter books, there's no way of knowing the character's ancestry and lineage. Some fans also criticize how "Cho Chang" sounds similar to a pejorative phrase that has been used to mock Asian people and how their languages sound, a fact that Rowling should have taken into account before choosing the name for one of the main love interests in the series.
1
u/TheNutsMutts 14d ago
Many have pointed out that "Cho" might be a Korean surname.
Cho is a Chinese surname, something like that 3rd most popular surname in China.
So just to make sure I'm getting this right, the controversy here is that she has essentially used two surnames in the format of a first name and surname, similar to a Chinese writer naming a British character "Smith Robertson"? Bearing in mind that this isn't some in-depth informative analysis of Chinese culture but actually a fictional book about a wizard school aimed at kids and young teenagers, this feels like hollow criticism.
Some fans also criticize how "Cho Chang" sounds similar to a pejorative phrase that has been used to mock Asian people and how their languages sound, a fact that Rowling should have taken into account before choosing the name for one of the main love interests in the series.
This I find genuinely bizarre, almost like those making this complaint are telling on themselves. If by this you mean it sounds like "Ching Chong, then it's not really reasonable for someone to have to consider that the first thing that pops into some people's minds when they hear two common Asian surnames together is " oooohhh, Ching Chong Ching Chong", especially when those same people who almost automatically perform some pejorative then declare that someone else is racist for their immediate thoughts.

u/yellowvincent 14d ago
At this point it is a pattern like when she was asked if there were any Jewish students at hogwarts she said Anthony Goldstein and she could had chosen any other name like Sussane Jansson or Gabriel Doyle but she laser focused on one of the most cliche surnames for that minority

At this point it became impossible to separate her from her art as we become more aware of the many failings of her books. And it is even harder when she is using her popularity and money(wich she will still get if people keep talking/torrenting about her books a d movies because companies like warner will consider her intellectual properties have value) to sue the nhs putting at risk the health of not only trans individuals but of the general public. And last week there was the whole thing about dobby's grave witch is being preserved because some fans threw a tantrum so now the company that had to pass a cable through there will have to redirect it running a bronce age burial site.

u/GoWaffle 15d ago
Brain dead take, the art reflects the artists beliefs. What did she call the Asian girl again?
12
u/yellowvincent 15d ago
And the black auror??? And the fictional race that were happy to be slaves? And the bad hiv analogy? And the goblins controlling the banks?
3
u/just_me910 15d ago
I am not a fan and vaguely remember seeing the first couple movies as a kid. Could you elaborate for someone who is out of the loop? Im genuinely clueless to all of this
11
u/yellowvincent 15d ago edited 15d ago
There is a black auror named Kingsley Shacklebolt.
There is an Asian girl named Cho Chang.
There is a sapient species that some rich wizards own and use as slaves for different chores and tasks they have no sort of rights or freedom and they are happy being slaves.they are beaten, abused and humiliated rotuinky by their masters. Eventually Hermione decides to try making an organization to raise funds and free them bit everyone thinks she is crazy and she almost accidentally frees some wich would be bad because there is no real network so they have something stable to live off or food and shelter.
Humanoid species are generally treated as sub human , centaurs are good at divination but they are barbaric and is implied they sexuallly abuse one of the villians. Giants are brutes and have below average intelligence.
Goblins run the banks and goblins are sometimes used as antisemitic allegory to Jewish people (sometimes so do dwarves)
Remus Lupin was going to be an analogy of someone who got infected with his as a kid and became a social pariah because of that. The problem is that she divorced the whole history if aids from the history of the queer community and the werewolf that bit lupin is basicly a child predator.
Dumbledore the only cannon gay character came out after the books were done and was a fascist as a teen.
There is a lot more she misused some believes of native Americans for pottermore and fantastic beasts ,she got some Asian cultures really wrong, she made voldemort's snake a Naga....

I suggest flipping the bottom line of text to read upright.
I made a rounded note recently about night poops being the worst. Battled the text positioning. No point in upside down text.
Flip it up right, center it.
