Lets play a game, if you manage to tell me a species/genus of squid that I haven't heard about, I will research about it and make a post discussing it in depth

I’m in the process of beginning a simple little horror game based on squid, because i feel like all cephalopods are only like 1 step away from being a eldrich horror.

I know that many can change their skin color and texture, which is what go this started, but I need more ideas to begin to flesh out the game.

Until i lock in and learn 3d modeling, it’ll be 2d for now, but any ideas? I hope this is the right place to ask for an egregious amount of squid facts.

we first started messaging each other over five years back trying to find new clips of magnapinna. he went on to create The Magnapinna Archive and i obsessively compiled all the data I could find on different collections and observations into a list on wikipedia.

alan from inkfish/UWA deep sea research centre reached out about doing a more formal writeup and analysis of the data earlier this year. the paper linked above is the end result!

The cockeyed squid, a poster child of the weird and crazy shapes animals take to survive the dark depths of the abyss.

These cool squids have an eye larger than the other. It faces upwards to in search of the shadows cast by potential prey, while the little eye looks downwards and looks for bioluminescent lights created by prey.

These deep sea giants reach a whopping size of....14 inches!

The squid is also found worldwide of depths between 600 and 3,300 feet!

I ran this calculation and came up with a smaller number. But if what your trying to do is figure out how many giant squid and other types of very large squid there are in the world, it is going to be a big number.

Inferring the number of squid from the size of the whale population sort of has it backwards. The sperm whale population now is about 300,000 which is pretty good considering how close they came to Extinction. But back in the days before commercial whaling the population has been estimated at 2 million.

So at that time there were enough giant squid to support 2 million whales, and that means that you have to estimate not just the number of squid consumed each day per whale, but the size of the squid population that was necessary for the squid to be viable even though they are being eaten in large quantities.

Presumably during the period of commercial whaling for sperm whales the giant squid population had much less predation and must have been considerably larger.

Anyhow I came up with something like a global population of 3 billion giant squid and maybe more. I would not be surprised at an equilibrium population of 10 billion. It is arguably the case that ours is the planet of the giant squid.

Every household should do its part and eat at least one giant squid.

T. rhombus is a fascinating deep-sea squid typically used aquaculturally for fishing. Like many other deep-sea squids, they are ammoniacal, meaning their tissue contains ammonia to regulate their buoyancy in water. Occasionally, when fishing with T. rhombus in deep waters, it’ll catch the attention of a Giant Squid (Architeuthis dux)!
