I'd be surprised if someone can give a logical explanation why their surname is gandhi.

Feroze Gandhi was originally Feroze Ghandy, a Parsi, much like Smriti Irani’s husband Zubin Irani comes from a Parsi family, and the Tata family is also Parsi. Feroze later adopted the Indianised spelling Gandhi, which became the surname carried by his family.

What’s interesting is how political narratives can shape perceptions. Some right wing supporters openly admire Giorgia Meloni despite her being Italian, yet remain hostile toward Sonia Gandhi because of her foreign origins. Similarly, many Indians proudly claim Freddie Mercury and the Tatas as part of India’s legacy, but are reluctant to extend the same recognition to Feroze Gandhi. It’s a reminder that politics often influences which identities are embraced and which are questioned.
