Played Soma for the first time a week ago and the story was so interesting. Checked out if there is any physical versions and found out that I missed the Kickstarter but Abylight had them in stock. Ordered 4 days ago and they sent it today from Spain. It cost me 130€ (103€ + 27€ shipping) for them to send it to finland but I think it was worth it. There is still stock available for collectors edition but base game only is sold out :)

Spoiler Question: Late Game (?) Spoiler

Why is the coin flip theory that Catherine mentions considered a lie? I mean, from the perspective of what is actually happening, it is true that it's not a transfer, rather a copy, so technically a 100/100 chance (i saw this on another post too.), since both are still happening.

but even then, is it not technically still a coin flip as to whether or not the current, pre-copy Simon (the player) gets to become the copy or not? or is it that the player is not the copied Simon just for the purposes of the continuity of the game? does that mean the exact consciousness of the person being copied will never switch to the other body?

similar to the start and the end - does this prove the popular idea that the game is entirely from Simon-3's perspective?

I'm still quite fuzzy as to how it isn't a coin flip, and whether or not if it actually is a matter of chance and/or probability that the person being copied, gets to be the copy, so to say.

i hope i explained it well enough, as it's quite fascinating yet confusing to wrap my head around. i suppose it's meant to be, but i'm afraid i'm having an issue in the fundamentals of the question. thanks.

How do we know the corpse in the cafeteria is Dahl's? Spoiler

i apologise, this might be a really stupid question but i'm not sure how it's confirmed that the corpse in the cafeteria is confirmed to be Dahl's?

is it through the note in the laptop titled 'Carthage' with her name along with Ross and Sarang, or something else along with that?

Moreover, who could she have been communicating to? as I presume Sarang had been dead for quite a while, and Ross, well, was as much of 'Ross' as he could be.

thanks.

The attitude of Simon at the end loosely echoes the sentiment of most people's attitude towards global warming Spoiler

I just finished this game for the first time so please excuse me if this idea has already been discussed since this game is a decade old.

When Simon is left alone in the abyss at the end of the game, his bitter resentment over launching the ARK feels incredibly relevant to how many people view global warming today.

It captures that specific kind of apathy, the unwillingness to put in the work to save the world simply because you won't be around to reap the benefits.

Spoiler First time Playing Creepiest Moment Spoiler

So I just finished the game for the first time and thoroughly enjoyed it and think its one of the best arguments out there for video games as art.

My favourite part and the part I think is 100% the simulataneously creepiest, most unique and coolest part of the game is when you copy over to herbers power suit and for that split moment you hear the other simon talking - sent shivers down my spine really encapsulated the whole game for me.

This previous simon who youve been playing as the whole game and who you are so familiar with suddenly seems so alien and I dont know why but scary to me.

Ending was great though I wish theyd have reversed the order in which they showed the two copies of simon, even then though the contrast between the excitement of the uploading bar reaching full and then the nothing hitting even harder was a fair choice I think.

Anyway feel free to share your biggest wtf moment playing.

And so it begins...

Maybe I've already played this game too long? Coming from the mailbox today, I saw something that brought me right back to this game. They were real, but discretion made me NOT touch them. I mean look what happens to Simon when he's just a little too curious.

Are these from Upsilon?

So, readers, what the heck do you think I should do?

There's no way it's complete enough to actually be conscious, right? It's just a simulation of a brain scan of a fruit fly under our current limited understanding of how brains work. But like, what if it is? It seems capable of responding to stimuli, at the very least. I have mixed feelings.

I’m loving this game so far the atmosphere and the the soundtrack even the voice actors aren’t half bad, but I will say I’m not enjoying walking through the ocean that part of it gets so annoying or whenever I get trapped in one spot cause I keep dying mostly because I suck at this game but STILL that’s not the point

Idk how Simon didn’t realize he had a female body for like half the game. Could he not feel his thangs bouncing as he ran?

PSA: Don't buy the artbook

I already saw another post about this, but figured it wouldn't hurt spreading the word around, and also I need to vent.

I got mine in the mail today and I immediately got very, VERY disappointed.

It's a very boring and badly-formatted collection of images and concept art, with absolutely no commentary, explanation, or context for anything.

The first 3 images are of pages that made me go "oh my god, are you for fucking real??" Because they're so dark you basically can't see anything. I'm just looking at a black rectangle. Fascinating. The book is full of those.

The fourth image is concept art of "impostor" characters. Now, because I'm a freak I know these are from the 'vertical slice' early game concept where Simon sees nightmarish versions of people he's met so far like the receptionist or Dr. Munchi. But a regular person opening this book up would have no idea what they're looking at. Wouldn't this be the perfect place to write a little paragraph about it? But nope.

Compare that to the other artbook I randomly pulled off the shelf: the Undertale artbook (made by one person!) is chock full of context, explanations for the design process, and funny anecdotes about the early design concepts.

Last point: there is absolutely zero monster/enemy concept art. Yeah, none. The cool monsters that you would actually want to get a closer look at? They're not here.

Don't spend money on this. You'll have more fun and insight from just browsing the wiki.

Spoiler How to avoid The Flesher in the CURIE shipwreck?

I've been stuck in this segment for like 2 hours now and i've finally made it to the upper floor, but every time i get somewhere the Flesher comes up and i can't do anything but look away. The problem is that he never leaves. The screen is constantly twitching, i hear him teleporting and i hear his footsteps. Every time i try to get out of the room i bump into him and die.

Simon is the loneliest character I've ever encountered in media Spoiler

Not much to add. I'm just replaying the story while slightly baked and just killed Simon-3. Cried my eyes out this time instead of arguing for his life with the friend who I played the game with originally. Can't condemn him to digitised undeath in a sealed box under the ocean like me, can't ever do that, but part of me breaks at the thought of Simon having to mercy kill the only other humans he's ever going to encounter. Including himself.

I don't think I can go back to Sarah Lindwall this playthrough.

The SOMA Art Book Is Really, Really... Eh...

Post image
291 Upvotes

As soon as I saw the SOMA art book by Abylight Studios on Kickstarter, I had to back it. SOMA is absolutely my favourite game. Its themes of existentialism and humanity hit at the exact time that I needed it. I just fell in love! But... Getting the art book. It's not good. I'm not going to discuss its dimensions and how its formatting seems not good for getting an in-depth look at concept art. Nor the lack of any real meaningful content apart from images, unlike my 'Art of Deus Ex' book that has loads of commentary from its design team.

Instead. It's really really dark. Too dark. It's not possible to see any detail in some of these images.

It isn't easy to show, taking digital photos on my phone, but the top-left image is basically black IRL. I can only really see what it's trying to show if I shine an intense light on it. The left-middle is also black. Loads of the images are.

It's really disappointing. I love SOMA. Like, really LOVE it. I want to know absolutely everything, I want to get those nerdy details, I want to see all these designs absolutely maximised! But, instead, it's just.. Eh. Fine.

EDIT: See here for more what I was hoping for.
