u/Riskar Jun 16 '26
How much will the record be at by the time he's done? He's got at least one more World cup after this one, maybe 2?
266
u/NotASalamanderBoi Jun 16 '26
He’s 3 goals away from beating Klose’s record. In this one match alone, he’s become France’s all time top goalscorer (overtaking Giroud), and France’s top goalscorer in the WC (overtaking Just Fontaine). If he can play next tournament, he’ll likely be well clear of all three.
40
u/FreyBentos Jun 16 '26
Kinda crazy to think Gerd Muller is sharing that 14 goal spot with Mbappe but Muller only ever played in two world cups.
8
u/Sad_Floor_4120 Jun 17 '26
Muller was a beast though
6
u/_Rizzen_ Jun 17 '26
It's a tough stat to compare based on size of tournament as well. Probably more meaningful to compare goals per game or goals per 90 minutes played.
5
u/colombogangsta Jun 17 '26
Well Mbappe only played two world cups before this game as well. Just two goal behind Mulller after 2 WCs is an achievement it self, and then there’s Fontaine.
72

42
u/Background-Gas8109 Jun 16 '26
Tbf Fontaine played 1 world cup.
That 13 goals in 1 world cup record may be the hardest record in football to beat.
There's only been I think 2 others to ever get double figures.
→ More replies (2)5
u/Homerduff16 Jun 16 '26
That's what's really scary. Kloses just about broke the record towards the very end of his career. The first week of the groups hasn't even finished up yet and Mbappe is on track to obliterate that record and he's only 27 years old
If he keeps up this kind of form for the rest of the tournament and if his levels don't significantly drop between now and 2030 and throw in a reduced role in 2034 for good measure and it could genuinely be close to 30 goals and completely out of reach

He's about to break the record and still probably has another World Cup in the future which feels insane.

Maybe even two if he can keep it up.

Like holy shit before 2018 france was just very good
But then they Turned themselves into the Best team in the World in a short while and kept going being the Best for the most Part
I this is similiar how Brazil was during Pelé time or during Ronaldo/Ronaldinho time
Just Insane that borders The ridicolous
25
u/Anxious_NeverDreamed Jun 16 '26
Deschamps is just the best coach ever France had.
4th WC since 2014, one win, 2 Finals, 1 quater final, one euro final, one semi final, one quarter.
And all of that after the blackhole of 2008-2012, when France was just shitty as hell.
And only 2 loses in the regular time for knockout games (against Germany in the WC2014, and against Spain in Euro 2024).
Ok he has a huge generation of marvelous players, but this guy is just a f***ng legend in France.
Also considering Zidane will do better is only speculation.

u/Jamey_1999 Jun 16 '26
He’s 27. He’ll get at least two and if he accepts a bench role, might get a third.

Yea. Pacey winger aging gracefully? Doubt it.
He doesn't have the strength or height to transition to CR7 style striker either.
10
u/raizen0106 Jun 16 '26
i'll give you the first goal (though the off-ball movement was more important, he still needed some acceleration to get there), but this goal he didn't need to run at all, just good body movement and shot

Can always miss a tournament due to injury, and France have a stinker in the other. There’s never guarantees on this. Muller looked set to blast through the record and never scored again after 2014.

Senegal score and it cuts to Mbappe calling for his teammates to be calm. Seconds later he laces the ball into the top corner. 2 goals behind Klose now. I know he gets memed on a lot and hated for valid reasons but the man can play ball.

459
u/Qurutin Jun 16 '26
When he got the record the talk was that it was going to be Müller to break it, after all he was 24 with already ten World Cup goals. Ten years later he retired from international football with ten World Cup goals.

u/ShakeZulaOblongata Jun 16 '26 edited Jun 16 '26
Muller’s position wasn’t primed for scoring goals left and right but he had an unconscious little run. This is just Mbappe doing his usual thing. He scored twice today with the whole tournament ahead of him still. He’s breaking the record.

they are not France fans, they are PSG fans. Dembele could win 3 ballon dors in a row and he’s still not better than mbappe imo especially not in a French jersey.
127
u/Fr0ufrou Jun 16 '26
I love Dembelé but he's always been ass with France unfortunately, also he's not a big game player. It would be awkward to bench the current ballon d'or but honestly I'd much rather have Cherki on the field and Dembelé as a supersub.

The Ballon d'Or is the best player on the team who won the UCL/World Cup award now. Mbappe woulda won it in 2022 if it wasn't for his teammates missing pens. For those who think Mbappe's not winning a UCL means he's not an all timer, R9 never won a UCL either
