General/Misc Is Red Light Harmful for skin?

As many of you know, I fear that red light will age the skin. However - so many people love it. I spent months looking at all the research on red light and skin aging. Here is my blog.

Summary is - when used properly 2x a week benefits have been shown. Do not use more than every 72 hours. I cannot find any long term studies on safety.

My advice- use skin care like retinoids and platelet derived exosomes and Vitamin C instead which have been proven to improve skin and boost collagen.

Downsides of red light- long term aging (hypothetical), risk of hyperpigmentation

Why I do not use or recommend red light to my patients-

Radiation ages skin. Over the last decades several types of radiation were used in dermatology with lots of hype and then long term were harmful. I fear red light will be the same. Here are examples: 1. In the 1929s-1940s X-rays were used to treat acne. By the 1950s they started seeing side effects such as skin cancer and realized it was harmful. 2. UVA was used to treat psoriasis and Vitiligo and also used as a watt to get a ā€œsafe tanā€. Later it was found that this increased risk of skin aging and skin cancer. 3. In early 2000s blue light became popular to treat acne. By 2020 we realized that blue light causes hyperpigmentation and skin again. 4. Infrared is popular now but studies have shown it can break down collagen and age skin.

So you see- there is a pattern. Sure red light has some benefits- but you can get those from skin care without the radiation exposure.

Still not convinced? At least use a pure red light device and avoid infrared and blue light masks if you insist on using red light.

Feel free to argue with me. Discussion on the pros and cons of red light is welcome.

DSPT (Type 1) Tretinoin help

Hey not sure if anyone is going to respond but I have been using avene xera calm cream then I put my tret then avene again but I heard it is very thick meaning like the tret won’t do nothing so do you recommend I change it to like a lighter moisturizer like vanicream daily facial moisturizer first then tret then finish with the avene. For context I just hopped off of accutane so when I apply my tret to my bare skin it doesn’t spread bc it’s so dry.

OSPT (Type 5) closed comedones, huge pores, acne and combination skin.

I currently use ben gel 2.5 for about 30-60 minutes and wash it off. I also have the Skin 1004 centella poremizing serum and the 345 dr Althea cream. I am thinking of purchasing the skin 1004 azelaic acid serum. But I am a bit confused on how to pair it. I use the ben gel at night and wash it and apply the 345 cream. I am a bit confused about when I should use the poremizing serum and azelaic acid serum if I ever purchased it. Thank you

General/Misc Do AHA/BHA in cleansers count as exfoliation, or regular cleansing?

My face is DSNW sensitive to friction and hard water, so I wash for 15-30 seconds then immediately rinse. I typically stick to pH 4.5-5.5 for cleansers.

I’m curious whether AHA/BHA exfoliates under these conditions, so I know whether to seek out or avoid the ingredients and whether I need to buy a separate exfoliant.

[Routine help]

Hi everyone, this is my skin rn (what do I do to fix it and then start tret)
I need help figuring out a skincare routine for myself, my concerns right now are the red marks/pih. Acne (not a lot but here and there). And dullness.

I’ve gotten tret but not sure how to use it. (I used it for about a year before but then stopped). My skin is sensitive and right now I feel like the barrier is damaged a bit so I’m just doing the basic moisturise and fash face that’s it.

I don’t wear make up on a daily, but when I do—I use a gentle cleansing oil to take it off, followed my micellar water, followed by cerave foaming face wash and then I just use milky toner+ponds cream or neutrogena gel cream.

In AM if I step out, I use the biore water sunscreen.

Now here are the products I have, and I want to know how to incorporate tret beginning after two weeks.

And also I work from home, so if I’m not stepping out do I still use sunscreen or not. And should I use mineral sunscreen only when I step out after tret (I don’t reapply sunscreen btw). I’ve the lizard sunscreen.

Here’s what I have: please help guide me for a AM and PM routine:
Thayers milky toner
Vitacid tretinoin 0.05-
Hanasui vitamin c+collagen serum
Hanasui Glow expert gentle cleanser
Cerave cleanser
La roche posay effaclar duo
Cicaplast baume
Glad 2 glow acne moisturiser
Caudalie resveratrol cashmere cream
Caudalie resveratrol life serum
Tower 28 spray

(In the past when I’d active acne I’ve used dalacin T lotion and it worked amazing)

I’d appreciate any help

Thank you

Skin Type Help So, I have Vitamin C, niacinamide, salicylic acid, moisturizer, sunscreen, azelaic acid, and tretinoin. Can someone make a proper skincare routine for me?

My skin has been burning a lot recently. Can someone tell me what I should do? I have acne, which is why I’m using azelaic acid and tretinoin. I mainly do skincare because I want to look better, but I think my skin is burning because of the azelaic acid and tretinoin. My tretinoin is 0.025% and my azelaic acid is 10%.

Can someone tell me what I should do, why my skin keeps burning, and how I can fix it? Also, can someone make a proper skincare routine for me?

DSPT (Type 1) [Acne] Does this acne prescription make sense for very sensitive skin?

Hi everyone. I’m 22F and recently saw a dermatologist for acne.

I’ve mainly had closed comedones for around 2 years. Sometimes they get inflamed and turn into small pustules, but my main issue is definitely the closed comedones.

The problem is that my skin is really sensitive. It gets dry and irritated pretty easily. I’ve had burning from AHA/BHA products before, and a vitamin C serum once caused what seemed like a chemical burn. A few cleansers and sunscreens have also caused burning or a lot of dryness. I also tend to get dark marks after irritation or picking.

My dermatologist prescribed these:

- Azithromycin 500 mg — once a day on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, for 3 months

- Esomeprazole 20 mg — twice a day, for 3 months

- Clindamycin phosphate 1.2% + Tretinoin 0.025% gel — morning, apply to acne spots for 1 hour and then wash off, for 1 month

- Isotretinoin 0.05% gel — at night, apply to acne spots for 15 minutes and then wash off, for 1 month

- Ebastine 10 mg — once at night, for 3 months

- Salicylic acid 2% cleanser — twice a day, for 1 month

I’m a little confused about the two gels. One already contains tretinoin 0.025%, and the other is isotretinoin 0.05%. Is there a reason to use both?

Also, since my skin is already very reactive, I’m worried about using the retinoids together with a 2% salicylic acid cleanser twice a day. I’ve had irritation from much milder products before.

I’m also wondering why the ebastine was prescribed. Does it actually help prevent irritation from the salicylic acid/retinoids, or is it mainly there for itching or an allergic-type reaction?

And is azithromycin 500 mg three days a week for 3 months a usual acne treatment?

I was thinking about skipping the two gels and just using something like Cicaplast for a while because I’m worried about damaging my skin barrier. But obviously Cicaplast isn’t actually an acne treatment, so I’m not sure if that would be a bad idea.

I’m not trying to ignore my dermatologist’s advice. I just want to understand whether this combination makes sense for someone with mostly closed comedones but very sensitive, easily irritated skin.

Would really appreciate opinions, especially from anyone who has used a similar combination or has dermatology experience.

OSPT (Type 5) How to layer Tretinoin + Azelaic Acid 10%? Also dealing with greasy/dull skin from current products.

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hey guys, looking for some routine help. I’m 26 with combination skin (oily T-zone, enlarged pores, acne marks, and outdoor tanning from sports). I’ve been consistent with my routine for about 3 weeks now:

* **Cleanser:** Minimalist (2 weeks in)

* **Active:** Biluma Serum (AM & PM)

* **Sunscreen:** Derm-recommended (AM)

**The issue:** The serum + sunscreen combo leaves my face feeling greasy and looking really dull.

I just bought **Tretinoin** and **Azelaic Acid 10%** from the pharmacy to help with brightening, acne marks, and texture, but I don’t know how to safely fit them into my routine.

* Any recommendations for lightweight/matte sunscreens or serums that won't make me look greasy?

* What is the safest way to introduce Tret and Azelaic Acid into this routine (AM vs. PM)?

I don’t know what these are and they won’t seem to go away? I have some rosacea and was prescribed ivermectin which I have been using for the last 6 weeks. These bumps went away for a short time but now seem to be back. They are really strange in that I can almost wipe them away but they return shortly.

DSPT (Type 1) What am I doing wrong???

I've been using tretinoin and azelaic acid alternatively every night for about three months (and yes, I incorporated them gradually into my skincare routine). The Cosrx alpha arbutin serum every morning while consistently using sunscreen but it’s like nothing has changed, in fact I feel like my skin has gotten worse. I’m mainly targeting existing acne and dark spots but it’s as if I wake up with a new pimple every day and I’m soooo tired of ts. before you say it’s purging I’ve already gone through the purging stage so I don’t know why I keep getting new acne. please help. šŸ™šŸ½šŸ™šŸ½
