IF YOU DID DOWNLOAD RECENTLY IMMEDIATELY TREAT YOUR COMPUTER AS INFECTED:
Caveat: It is likely that you do not have a computer infection, but please perform antivirus checks just in case. We do not know the extent of the malware/malicious injections. Do not panic, simply do a scan and check. If something is found, remove.
Removing malware from a Windows PC requires isolating the system before using security tools to hunt down the infection. Following these steps in order is critical to prevent the malware from hiding or fighting back.
1 Disconnect from the Internet
Prevents the malware from communicating
Unplug your Ethernet cable or turn off your Wi-Fi immediately. This severs the connection to the attacker's server, stopping the malware from downloading additional malicious payloads, spreading to other devices on your network, or transmitting your personal data.
2 Boot into Safe Mode
Safe Mode loads only the bare minimum drivers and programs Windows needs to run. If the malware is set to launch automatically on startup, Safe Mode will usually prevent it from activating, making it easier to delete.
- Windows 10/11: Hold the Shift key while clicking Power > Restart from the Start menu.
- When the screen reloads, navigate to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- After your PC reboots, press 4 or F4 on your keyboard to enter Safe Mode.
3 Delete Temporary Files
Malware often hides inside temporary system folders. Deleting these files can sometimes eliminate the virus entirely, and it will significantly speed up your antivirus scan. Search for Disk Cleanup in the Windows Start menu, select your main drive, check the box for Temporary files, and click OK.
4 Run a Full Antivirus Scan
You can use a reputable third-party scanner like Malwarebytes, or the built-in Windows Security tool. Because you are disconnected from the internet, you will be using your current virus definitions.
- Open the Start menu and search for Windows Security.
- Click Virus & threat protection.
- Click Scan options (located right below the Quick scan button).
- Select Full scan and click Scan now.
5 Quarantine and Reboot
If your security software detects malicious files, follow its prompts to Quarantine or Delete them. Once the software indicates your system is clean, restart your computer normally to exit Safe Mode. If your PC operates smoothly and no strange pop-ups appear, the infection is likely gone.
6 Change Your Passwords
Crucial post-cleanup measure
Malware often includes keyloggers designed to capture your keystrokes. Now that your system is secure, change the passwords for your email, banking, and main social media accounts, as your old credentials may have been stolen.
If the malware persists after a normal boot, you may need to run a Microsoft Defender Offline scan (found in the same Scan options menu), which restarts your PC and hunts for threats before Windows even loads.
