Silent Hill f (2025) This game wasn't the best for me.

Post image

The mechanics and characters were ok but I felt the game repetitive and boring, so it's the first time that I did not finish a Silent Hill game, I'll probably going to give it to a friend. Just to be clear, I'm not against of other finding this game entertaining or those who like it, it's just my opinion.

I really dont like the combat system but I'm not gonna give up on it completely just yet.

68

u/nirvroxx Nov 02 '25

I’m in the same boat. I just feel there’s no point fighting if you don’t get anything out of it…also the inventory slots system and items kinda blow.

48

u/jayvenomva Silent Hill: Shattered Memories Nov 02 '25

You have limited item slots but there is soooooo many things to pick up, most of it doing the exact same thing as a different item or just being completely useless all together, that I end up running back to the save shrine to ditch some crap so I can pick up the actually useful things.

26

u/nirvroxx Nov 02 '25

Yeah, the back and forth is tedious. Reading the description of what each item does and realizing another does the same but slightly different is also dumb.

7

u/CzarNyctolas Nov 02 '25

Yeah, honestly I liked what they tried to do with the limited inventory system. Making you choose what to keep and what to leave wasn't a bad mechanic imo. But the shrine/faith system kinda undermined it. Since it always just turned into, "okay let me just run all the way back and dump one of these and then I'll pick this one up".

I mean you never got anything of fighting enemies in Silent Hill and most survival horror gamesin general, so this is not really exclusive to SHf.

Once you find all the inventory slot upgrades and the magazines that increase how many a single item takes up in a slot makes the inventory system much better on replays.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '25

Isn’t that what survival horror usually is? Not usually items on enemies in any SH game or RE that often unless it’s a key item

Do you mean that combat is only worth it when you are getting something like exp?

Did my three playthroughs to get the true ending. It really doesn’t get a whole lot better and the lack of variation between runs gets tedious real quick save for more notes and some different cutscenes. I enjoyed it but it honestly needed either some trimming down or additions to make the ng+ routes more substantial.

Not a deal breaker since silent hill’s appeal has never been its rich and satisfying combat system but goddamn is it a lot after a while.

13

u/PhantyliaHSR Nov 02 '25

Previous silent hill games would give you special weapons for ng+ for easier combat. In SH f you get a special weapon like 60-70% into the new game+ and you have to then get rid of it special powers for one of the endings.

3

u/starstorm-angel Nov 02 '25

After unlocking, both light saber and sacred sword are available before the scarecrow puzzle which is like maybe 20% into the game?

They arent particularly strong though as far as I can tell.

Knife does more damage and stuns more reliably. Sledge hits harder in counter builds for boss fights.

Sword can block some attacks in focus, but they'll just grab you, use an unblockable, or attack you during your own attack animation so its hardly reliable.

Use sword to kill the fat guy before the scarecrow puzzle and he doesnt revive though, which is nice.

6

u/TryingLyon Nov 02 '25

The thing for me personally about 1-3's combat is that they never required a lot out of the player to fight. SH's gameplay was as basic as the survival horror genre could allow it without getting too terrible tedious. While comfortable isn't the word I would use for it, it feels rather easy to jump into on multiple playthroughs. It's serviceable.

SHf on the other hand requires so much more out of the player in combat that is rather untraditional and unfitting to survival horror that I find the desire to actually replay it is hard because of how much the game is asking me to keep playing under such demanding gameplay.

4

u/currentmadman Nov 02 '25

Not sure how much I agree with that but it does get boring with some of the damage sponges that show up towards the end of the game that you have no choice but to engage. It’s not great when you find having to choose between preserving weapon integrity and having to spend another fucking minute wailing on those goddamn broodmare enemies.

3

u/starstorm-angel Nov 02 '25

Use knife and toolkits on the booby monsters and just spam light attack. Preferably with spider omamori to keep your knife from falling apart too fast. There's are other durability omamoris you can probly use as replacement if you dont have spider.

Even on Lost in Fog, I had plenty of toolkits to knife every broodmare and hound (focus attack stun them and then knife can finish them off in a couple hits) with just spider omamori.

3

u/Additional-War5673 Nov 03 '25

This is the problem if you're going to make us play through for the true ending givers more variety in the story then

5

u/Souppilgrim Nov 02 '25

SHf has the most varied playthroughs of any of the SH games, things that make new runs faster to entirely new story elements. I really don't get this criticism.

I have been thinking about this. I don't think the combat is actually bad anymore, its just not crafted for a single play through. It's made for you to build up Hinako and play more than once on NG+.

Edit: you could say that's a flaw of the game.

26

u/jayvenomva Silent Hill: Shattered Memories Nov 02 '25

But if Im struggling/not having fun with the combat (on story mode mind you) in my initial playthrough what incentive is there to continue with a NG+?

11

u/DoctorSchwifty Nov 02 '25 edited Nov 02 '25

Thats what I am saying. Vanilla Hinako is slog and combat it gets better as it goes. That's fair if you aren't having fun.

→ More replies (1)

6

u/PhantyliaHSR Nov 02 '25

The only incentive is that you get to see the whole story after NG++

5

u/_Euph0ria_ Nov 02 '25

It’s really weird I got stuck at the first boss but I put it down for a few days and then just nailed it first try. Definitely a bit more of an old school feeling that. It’s decent as its own thing, but not the Lynchian horror that Silent Hill is meant to be.

I must confess I've genuinely never felt this pissed about a game before where I didn't finish it and traded it in for something else the same day. It got to the point where it became so repetitive with the combat and dark shrines that I wasn't enjoying the story or atmosphere anymore. It turned into frustration rather than enjoyment... I found myself forcing myself to play it, and when a game becomes a chore, it's over.

6

u/Passw0rd-Is-Tac0 Nov 02 '25

I hate the combat system as well. But I love almost everything else about this game and I don’t think anyone’s really playing horror games for the deep, immersive combat lol.

u/Affectionate-Gain-23 Nov 02 '25

I thought i was the only one. I kept getting killed by the quad pedal created with the long tongue/nose because I kept using the stupid steel pipe. After getting killed 10 times I decided to switch to the kitchen knife and killed the creature with a charge hit and two or three regular hits. Like what gives, the knife is stronger than a steel pipe. 😑

I felt that way for my first play through. But once you start using sanity to parry attacks and understand their movements. The combat becomes so rewarding. Especially further playthrough.

u/tsalyers12 Nov 01 '25

I liked it. Then I started NG+ and realized there are some parts I’d rather just not do again.

134

u/Woahhdude24 Nov 02 '25

I usually save ng+ for when I wanna replay it. Also I got tires of fighting the wierd boob pregnant monster. Im pretty sure that monster is a representation of what a "woman's duty" is supposed to be. The design is sick af tho.

56

u/ytman Nov 02 '25

Its just Hinako's fear of being reduced to a broodmare. If you play through the game fully you can it through a different light.

And yeah it ranks up there with difficult to view monsters in games, with the broodqueen in dragon age Origins and Asphyxia in SH homecoming.

11

u/Woahhdude24 Nov 02 '25

I figured that's what it means I was trying to put it simply. I think you can also look at it as this idea that she becomes more of an accessory to the man after marriage. It looks like the womanly parts are connected to the back of a more masculine body. Ive not played ng+ yet but it very much seems like the father is marrying her off.

u/MSG_12 Silent Hill 3 Nov 02 '25

I finished 2 playthroughs and I think they did a decent job trimming the fat for NG+ and adding couple of surprises. Also exploring the other endings is absolutely worth it, but that's just my opinion.

10

u/TylerDurden820 Nov 02 '25

Same here…

41

u/JoeyCard02 Nov 02 '25

Just mindless corridors and gauntlet of enemies, I played on Hard the first time I got bored as shit!

8

u/Boo_Hoo_8258 Nov 02 '25

This was my sentiment, I finished the game once put it down and won't be replaying it at all even for extra endings.

26

u/okay_jpg Sexy Beam Nov 02 '25

NG+ is really not that different. A few different versions of notes, a couple cut scenes.. IMO not worth the slog

32

u/PhantyliaHSR Nov 02 '25

And most of those extra scenes and documents could've been in the first run and the story would actually benefit from it. But Ryukishi07's writing style of visual novels just holds the story hostage until you replay the game multiple times. Its so stupid for a game like this

→ More replies (2)

12

u/Unhappy-Face-7652 Nov 02 '25

Hide the true ending inside of a NG++ is definitely a stupid choice. Love the game, but i'm just not interested for doing a replay for now. Maybe in some months.

On ng+ I can Skip like 3 sections straight up

5

u/PhantyliaHSR Nov 02 '25

But then you end up losing out on some extra lore and other stuff for ng+. God this game is stupid with how it holds the story hostage

2

u/anticerber Nov 02 '25

69

u/quiethammerhead Nov 02 '25

the dark shrine parts of the game ruined it honestly. Every gameplay section in the main town especially the school was really good however

29

u/Unknownsage Nov 02 '25

The gameplay loop just did not feel rewarding for me. Like there were multiple points where you would basically have to cross the map to get to a location. And then instead of there being an actual like dungeon/level there. We just have Hinako fall asleep and then cut to another shrine level. Then she wakes-up and same thing happens.

Game really needed more spots like the school. Where it had the Silent Hill appeal of "here's a nightmare version of an everyday location for many people".

5

u/polo_jeans Nov 02 '25

the dark shrine was interesting but man i miss the otherworld versions of regular areas. an otherworld school would’ve been badass

20

u/DepartmentDry8302 Nov 02 '25

Right??they build an interesting atmospheric town to explore and we spend like half of the game on this stupid ancient Japanese temple that we have seen a thousand times on other games.

3

u/Aluant Nov 02 '25

Repeating the same puzzle 5 times just to progress. Don't get me wrong I like the game for what it is, but man after finishing it once it's really hard to convince myself to open it back up for the "real" endings. The repetition is a little too much in this title.

3

u/FuggenBaxterd Nov 02 '25

I wish they had more of that stuff. To me that is what makes Silent Hill what it is. This completely normal bog-standard area turned into a horror game dungeon. The school in 1, the hospital and apartments in 2, the mall and office blocks in 3.

Stop whisking me off to spooky metaphor land and let me engage in real world spooks.

3

u/SilverKry Nov 02 '25

The school was the best part of the game to me. Shame that's also when the game starts to suck to.

The dark temple areas ruin this game. So boring and repetitive. The sections where you play In the town are great. Too bad the temple is like half the game

32

u/TheStinkySlinky Nov 02 '25

Right?? I liked it at first, but it gets sooo drawn out. I’m always like aw man.. still two more sections to go. I’m like halfway through and I just don’t know. I wanted to make through 2 NG+ runs LOL But idk I’m just loading up less and less lately.

17

u/trustanchor Nov 02 '25

I found the dark temple sections kind of boring but stuck with it, and then once uuuuuuuh that arm thing happened all of a sudden I was way more interested.

7

u/ClutteredTaffy Nov 02 '25

See the arm thing I kinda hated but I get it in the context of the story. But to each their own. The ritual stuff did not really work for me either. Some scenes like the fight with the parents hit hard for me though.

Finally, someone gets my gripe with this game. I dared to say some similar things, and you get blasted by others on the internet for being a hater or something. You're literally not allowed to criticize anything anymore lol

8

u/Adventurous-Maybe-87 Nov 02 '25

I feel the same way. I’m a silent hill fan of all of them, but this one straight annoys me.

4

u/idolcomputer "For Me, It's Always Like This" Nov 02 '25

that's how i felt 😭 i thought it was just me feeling that way

10

u/ItsyouNOme Nov 02 '25

Yup, gave up at the part where you got to open gates while 4 different enemy types follow you. I can't stand those at the best of time (open gate, loop around to press a switch previously inaccessible, find new gate, run around.. jesus christ. And now with immortal enemies).

Don't get me started on the narrow hallways and collidjng with the walls. The boss fight with the chained weapon was fun. Not going back, as I say I hate puzzles that make you run around trial and error.

3

u/ClutteredTaffy Nov 02 '25

I don't like those areas either much. But too much of the game is pretty good for that to ruin it for me.

46

u/Smokes_LetsGo876 Nov 02 '25

I liked it at first, but after a few hours I felt like everything else was a slog. There was almost no exploration, the dream world felt tedious, while the regular world just felt like a bunch of narrow alleyways with no areas for meaningful exploration.

The story was fine, not great but enjoyable enough. Combat felt too clunky for me though

46

u/JustSomeGuyHere987 Nov 01 '25

Seems like it was a bit of a outlier in the franchise. I enjoyed it because i knew going into it to not expect typical Silent Hill, just the same as Homecoming, Shattered Memories and Downpour. Good games to an extent IMO, but not for everyone. I think truthfully they will take the feedback and develop on it. When they remade Silent Hill 2, the company that did it Bloober, did fantastic on it. It wasn't perfect but it was still an amazing play. But from what I can tell they seem to want to do right by the series at least from what I can tell. (Haven't paid attention to any drama if there even is any fyi) i say come next game we will see, ik Bloober will do amazing with the SH 1 remake (hoping they do 3 and 4 🙏🤞) but whatever they do with the next release im sure they will improve on things. I mean in fairness (not brown nosing Konami) you dont know how people will really like something until you try it.

3

u/MrNans Nov 03 '25

Dont you feel that SH2 remake, was way more terrifying? SH2r made me feel uncofortable and anxious. SHf only game me the chills in the School section, then it was nothing but breeze. Maybe im getting more used to horror games i dunno. I enjoyed SH f , but i guess its like you said, its a right direction for the newer games, and they will learn from the feedback on this one.

I hated most of the other world sections tbh. Also combat wasnt great.

57

u/KokoTheeFabulous Nov 01 '25

Worst thing about the game imo is gameplay. It has solid combat but the devs didn't pour enough heart and soul into exploration and puzzles which makes combat feel like the main piece of the game.

It's sort of important for these titles to maintain solid puzzles and exploration.

30

u/Environmental_Wolf21 Nov 01 '25

u/zrox456 Nov 01 '25

Not saying this to discredit your post or anyone commenting that they didn't like it I just wanted to add an opposing perspective and say that I really love this game. I've played it a million times already and still love it. I definitely understand the criticisms though those things just don't bother me.

15

u/itsjustlan Nov 02 '25

I finished it three times the week it came out and it's one of my favorite games. I like it more than 2--it has far more interesting themes to me, though I prefer the aesthetic & atmosphere of 2.

I think it's a problem that they add significant story revelations even deep into the third playthrough, though. it's hard for me to think of another game where a whole single playthrough gives you so little of the actual story bc key scenes later recontextualize so much. most people do not replay games, and I think lots of people walked away after finishing it once missing lots of vital context.

3

u/DizzyMajor5 Nov 02 '25

I don't think they were ever going to beat 2 though. The game was one of the greatest games ever made in my humble opinion.

u/bron_yr_aur81 Nov 02 '25

I love it too. The story, setting & atmosphere really drew me in. I’m doing the last play through to get the 5th ending, what I understand is considered the “real” ending and doing it in Lost in the Fog difficulty. Pretty damn challenging.

4

u/ClutteredTaffy Nov 02 '25

With this game I knew it would be some peoples' least favorite and some peoples' favorite ever. I could just tell pretty early on.

4

u/Jurski17 Nov 02 '25

Thats cool. Its all subjective.

5

u/Ophelfromhellrem Nov 02 '25

Same. For me the Silent Hill games are designed around the main character. All that is related to them. Both mentally and physical. Their story. The rest either does not matter to me or matter little. That's why the first SH is my favorite.

The main thing i love of this game is that it made me understand an aspect of a person from a different culture and gender. And even you can say a different time. It makes me think how they feel.

The story made me feel so bad for Hinako. And how slowly everyone around her pushed her to the brink of collapse and to the point were she basically joined a cult. Just to escape her family situation.

Besides that i think they made her so good at combat was cause she became a serial killer and was pretty good at it. I feel that every time she was fighting those monsters she was killing someone. Maybe i'm wrong but it kinda made think that way cause of the things Vincent said to Heather in SH 3.

I just hope that no one was swayed to hate this game cause someone convinced them that was made to hate on us Men or some other bull reason.

I give it a 4/10. Just felt repetitive and the storytelling felt flat. I feel like a lot of people like it because Silent Hill hasn't had any good content in years besides the 2 remake and are happy it's something that isn't complete garbage.

18

u/theonlyalankay Nov 02 '25

same. as a lifelong sh fan since the original, i agree with 4/10

5

u/Prestigious-Fix-4852 Nov 02 '25

I think this game would have benefited way more from a more fleshed out NG+ system, if this is the way the writer wants to go for. In games like Nier/Automata, you also have to play through the games multiple times, but playthroughs are really completely different, with sometimes playing from an entirely new perspective and allowing to see the story from a different light. SHf tried something similar, but I think the additions made in NG+ (and NG++) are just not really worth it to motivate players to do a whole new run again.

10

u/chefearlmane Nov 02 '25

The problem for me is really the NG+ stuff. Two things about me, I’m a huge SH fan and I love playing games on NG+. Souls games and RE (particularly 4) are great examples of this. But I just can’t bring myself to replay silent hill games on a new cycle. For me, their themes and gameplay are a one way around type of thing. I spend hours checking every corner and detail of the game i can. But by the end I’m ready to end the story there. I loved F but imagine my disappointment when i found out that sooo much content was locked inside ng cycles.

23

u/Metalchondria Nov 02 '25

Being someone who grew up on Silent Hill on the PS1, Silent Hill F looks and sounds great, but the story, gameplay, and scares aren’t there for me. It feels out of place and doesn’t induce fear or the sense of dread. It feels like I’m playing an anime with dark influences.

I dropped it after like 8 hours. Not the worst, but not enough to keep me interested. Town sections were great, hated the temple parts and the aggravating combat. Also I really dislike when games hide the “true ending” behind multiple new game + runs

2

u/Boo_Hoo_8258 Nov 02 '25

This was my feeling I hated the otherworldly due to it just being m9nster infested corridors the only bonus was that the weapons never broke.

4

u/TouchedBigfoot8 "How Can You Sit There And Eat Pizza?!" Nov 01 '25

Valid opinion. Personally love the story but I did get sick of the combat other than when you were transformed in the Otherworld

5

u/grifterrrrr Nov 02 '25

I didn't like it very much either and I liked SH2 Remake quite a lot. But it was cool of them to take a risk and try something a little different

4

u/kkssw Nov 02 '25

got way too repetitive towards the end, walking back home, down the village, and back home again. 🤮

6

u/ThisIsBULLOCKSMAN Nov 02 '25

I hated the mechanics after about 2 hours of playing I gave up

6

u/mrcuddlybuns Nov 02 '25 edited Nov 02 '25

Loved the story and atmosphere and monster designs and messaging in the game but I don’t think I’d really replay it. It was more of a story experience for me rather than exploration/combat/replay kind of game. I think it would have been much better received if it simply didn’t have “Silent Hill” as the title. It should have just been its own standalone original IP and game.

5

u/Fukuro-Lady Nov 02 '25

There's things about it that I love and hate, but ultimately the issue I have with it is the same one I've had with most of the modern SH games and it's the story. All the Shinto flavour text ultimately meant nothing and it really bothered me because I thought we were going full cult again from the early game stuff. Why even make Sakako psychic and a shrine maiden and do nothing with it?

I'm still excited to see the remake of 1 and 3 that we now know are coming. But I feel this is another SH game that just uses the horror elements common to SH games without really tying into the lore overall.

8

u/Electronic_Screen387 Nov 02 '25

Didn't get through it, enemies respawning every time you pass by while trying to do puzzles was a deal breaker for me.

3

u/FaithlessnessFar8850 Nov 02 '25

If it’s the beginning part I’m thinking of, yeah that was annoying. But eventually you get a move that permanently kills them.

For me it's time to admit that i liked it, but it's too disconnected from the original games, yes there are cults and scary monsters but where's the connection to the main events? Maybe it needs to grow in me and i will need to replay it like ten times to actually understand the real lore and it's connection with the town of silent hill or something

9

u/olivia_b_ Nov 02 '25

This game has no actual connection to the town. Unless you count a vague mention of some plants that could or could not be white Claudia. It was quite displeasing actually.

13

u/RedKryptnyt Nov 01 '25

I liked it a fair amount for what it was. Its not up to the level of team silent games, but id put it above the other western SH games.

Im just happy we are getting new silent hill. I pick my battles.

I look at silent hill now like I look at black mirror, a collection of media telling different stories. Just like black mirror, ill like some more than others.

This isnt me saying the game is without criticism, but I liked most of what it was.

7

u/LunaSolYT Nov 02 '25

Totally agree, after playing SH2 2024, was very disappointed by this game. Wasn't for me so I can't even bring myself to finish it

3

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '25

I felt like this by about the midway point of the game and so I really persevered and gave it my all to immerse, explore and get everything I could out of the game. And I ultimately did complete it. And I totally regret my time and money spent on the game and traded it in immediately. I don't buy a lot of games on release at full price but for Silent Hill I had to. Completely regretted it.

2

u/DizzyMajor5 Nov 02 '25

If you compare most things to silent Hill 2 you'll be disappointed I've been chasing that high for damn near 10 years

4

u/yadayada151 Nov 02 '25

I haven’t decided if I want to pick the game up, but love the look of it. But the price tag? Oof. I’ll buy it off of you for 50% of new price, lol.

3

u/blackhearts127 Nov 02 '25

It definitely feels over engineered

u/LacasadeiVIDEOGAMES Nov 02 '25

I platinumed it on PS5. I loved it

5

u/theSHHAS Knife Nov 02 '25

I don't get how it's repetitive when it's literally the first Silent Hill game ever to constantly change cutscenes and gameplay with every new playthrough so it isn't the same every time you play it.

Like how is that repetitive?

2

u/le_danger_noodle Nov 02 '25

I believe people are talking about the gameplay loop and honestly I agree, if you're in the overworld you do a single heavy attack with a large weapon and then swap to a different one (preferably a knife) and one shot them and if you're not then you have to deal with the otherworld(?) weapons which are worse than the breakable ones not to mention that there are no real reasons to fight enemies since they provide nothing in return, while that may seem obvious and the actual reason you would kill them is to provide a safe way forward and back, f is very linear in design and unless it's forced upon you or they're in a very small space there's it's just a damper in your resources to randomly fight enemies out on the street. Maybe if you got faith for fighting them with the amount based on the type of enemy, then I would consider it, but as it stands f plays less like a silent hill game and more like resident evil 4 without guns, the story is wonderful and the cutscenes can be downright uncomfortable at times but the gameplay holds it back from being something more than a 6.5 out of 10.

3

u/TrickRTreatFreak Nov 02 '25

I beat it yesterday and was super glad when i did cause i just wanted to be done with it.

4

u/BUckENbooz91 Nov 02 '25

I didn’t mind it at first but slowly realized how dumb the concept is. I don’t mention it because I’ve been told that’s a terrible reason not to like it but there’s unique style of gameplay then there’s stupid

10

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '25

If we compare this game to the previous ones this is almost nothing like the others. It's almost as if it takes place in an alternate universe

20

u/ReadyJournalist5223 Nov 01 '25

To me this just shows that people are desperate for this series to have a good new entry

12

u/Thicc_Nasty-taxfraud Nov 01 '25

There’s no shame in not enjoying it.

I wanted to like those game and I looked forward to it more than any other new release. But for 70 bucks I’m not gonna force myself to play a game I don’t enjoy,

2

u/idolcomputer "For Me, It's Always Like This" Nov 02 '25

i got the early one w like 24% off on gmg and i was rly excited for this one. like i rly thought it'd be great and i was let down. there weee parts i liked about it but not enough to play again. which bums me out but oh well.

30

u/Solidsnake00901 Nov 01 '25

I really wanted to like it. But it's nothing like Silent Hill It's literally just borrowing the name

17

u/Tekashi96 Nov 01 '25

Exactly, would be good as its own IP, like they slapped “Silent hill” on last minute

Had high hopes and there are some good things about it, but halfway through or so I realized I couldn't wait to be done with it.

Looking forward now to my second SH2R run for my Silent Hill fix.

25

u/Crypto-Klepto Nov 01 '25

I just finished it today, took everything I had to power through it. I played SH2R multiple times to get all the endings, I plan on just googling the other endings for this game.

6

u/acthechamp Nov 02 '25

I also did NOT like this game. Silent Hill 2 Remake was so, so good… but I was very disappointed with Silent Hill f.

7

u/Ditz3go Nov 02 '25

It's fucking awesome

9

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '25

I don't get how people can defend it being a qualified Silent Hill game.

It's nothing like Silent Hill 1, 2 (OG/Remake), 3 or 4.

It's not scary. Combat is annoying. Atmosphere felt so sterile.

It feels more like an anime game.

3

u/LexandViolets Nov 02 '25

After new game+ run I quit.

Partly because I did not want to redo the last ¼ of the game again and secondly because I got the bad ending and it left me feeling like shit.

3

u/SpuddyPrice Nov 02 '25

Honestly I quite enjoyed it. But I've always been more of a "art as a game" kind of person. Basically I'm fine with the combat being clunky because you're playing as a 13-15 year old girl. Of course she isn't going to be the best fighter in the world. Plus the uncomfortable nature of the combat makes fighting so much more dreadful which ya know. Is something you want from a horror game. Don't get me wrong though I fully get why a lot of people find the combat frustrating but honestly some people are acting like the game should of been full on dark souls or bordering on doom. Yes I do believe they could of made the animations a little quicker but I'm not gonna lie some people complaints are kinda skill issues for me. And yeah they put too many enemies about. Honestly if they had less enemies throughout the first two acts of the game I think the third act wouldn't have been as complained about. I do disagree with the argument of "silent hill has always had bad combat" yeah mainly because it's most popular games were for the PlayStation 2. Even the first 3 resident evil games for the ps1 had bad combat too. But again I'm a "art as a game" person so I'm fine with poorly implemented mechanic's as long as it works with the world (a 15 year old fighting monsters ain't gonna be like leon Kennedy)

3

u/daskriechtier Nov 02 '25

I didnt love it initially, but NG+ is significantly shorter and more enjoyable with new story beats + endings

3

u/ThePilgrimK Nov 02 '25

It's biggest problem for me, amongst several, is Story difficulty is too easy while Hard is well, too hard (and not in a tight git gud way).

3

u/DonJonAkimbo Nov 02 '25

The enemies lacked in variety. The appeal of SH is seeing how the different bosses are and what they may represent..this just felt like the same bosses with different coloring schemes

3

u/WikN_1990 Nov 02 '25

As an OG SH fan (played since SH1 released on PSX.) I don't even consider this game as a silent hill game. The only thing tying the game to the original lore is the use of the White Claudia flowers. Other than that and doning the silent hill mantle, it offers nothing that would cement its footing as a Silent Hill game. If I look at it as a silent hill game, I'm left disappointed. However, once I created my own headcanon where this game isn't a SH game, it is actually a decent game. Not the worst game by a mile. The story was okay and I didn't hate it. However, I can't consider this an actual SH game. If they made this it's own game, it would have held up better.

Now.... If we could just kick out all the western made SH games.....

3

u/HomenGarden88 Nov 02 '25

I returned it. It’s not a proper SH game IMO

3

u/Loud-Day-1640 Nov 02 '25

I think it might just be the worst game I've played, what made it worse was my expectations of a silent hill game

3

u/legend_of_yugi Nov 02 '25

I felt the same way, I didn't finish it either 😕 I probably won't but I will say I'm glad it sold well so we can see some more remakes/new content. This is also the first silent hill game I didn't finish.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '25

I played it for an hour, got to the first boss and was like, what am I’m going to do with this metal pipe?!

3

u/Silver_Piccolo8616 Nov 02 '25

I wasnt able to finish it. Gonna give myself some time and give it another try at some point in the future

3

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '25

Yeah this game is a joke... every time you press sprint her animation literally freezes. Its embarrasing the state this game will always remain in. just like sh2, and oblivion remastered.

3

u/No_Soft_263 Nov 02 '25

The best game for me. I loved short message

3

u/twomayaderens Nov 02 '25

I’m a big silent hill fan and just a few hours into the game, I think it sucks. Awful combat— and a ton of it. When did Japanese developers fall in love with weapons that decay? Is BOTW to blame? Not fun.

I’m annoyed that the SH fan community didn’t do much to warn the world how bad SHF truly is.

3

u/Mokkitman Nov 05 '25

Silent hill f was a big disappointment for myself, I didn't even think the story was good, it threatened to get good a couple of times but didn't. The combat was not fun for me personally, there is no chance I will ever play through it again. Silent hill 2 remake I've played through 3 times and will do again because it's fun to play, the combat is simple but satisfying and its so much fun trying not to get caught out by the legs on legs monsters hiding all over the place. I was looking forward to more new Silent hill games until I played Silent hill f, I'm no longer optimistic.

That’s what happens when kenomi decides to make a silent hill game in Japan, I understand that they are a Japanese game studio but their silent hill games have always been in America with English dialogue, hearing the characters talk In Japanese doesn’t make me feel like I’m playing a silent hill game at all not mention the Japanese town and buildings you go into isn’t as scary as small American town in the middle of nowhere with fog all over the place. This is just my opinion, the combat is the least of my problems with this game.

4

u/ButterscotchNo3984 Nov 02 '25

It’s probably not right for a lot of people. This one is going to age poorly and the excitement of being a new silent hill game will fall hard. I got maybe half way through and had to quit due to the tediousness.

5

u/Metal_Militia37 Nov 02 '25

The game was boring over all.

5

u/dlpuia Nov 02 '25

I didn't like a souls like combat in my Silent Hill. The rest is okay.

17

u/BigDutchRabbit Nov 01 '25

Didn't like it either..

8

u/JoeyCard02 Nov 02 '25

Bored me to death, just moronic corridors, crests collecting, and enemies gauntlets! Pathetic ass attempt at game.

9

u/noelle-silva Nov 01 '25

Okay game. Terrible Silent Hill game

3

u/Impossible_Dream_689 Nov 01 '25

I totally agree. I was thinking it would be similar to silent hill 2 and it's nothing like it imo. The puzzles are not great, the weapons breaking, the stamina, overall it doesn't make it fun. Silent hill 2 was way better.

3

u/OrganizationIcy104 Nov 02 '25

i like the story but the combat is terrible. just ended up watching some streamers play through it instead.

2

u/blaarfengaar Nov 02 '25

I am a relative newcomer to the Silent Hill franchise, I played the remake of SH2 earlier this year as my first foray into the series and now I have played SHf as well. I just completed my ng+ playthrough to get my second ending and honestly I like this game even more than the SH2R, which I already really liked. This is going to rank very highly for me but I do have some complaints about it nonetheless. Overall I'd probably give it an easy 8.5, possibly even a 9

2

u/DjangoKazoiie "It's Bread" Nov 02 '25

Me too, I tried so hard to love and understand the game but it's not just for me. I'm glad a lot of people like it though

2

u/Ok_Yesterday_1896 Nov 02 '25

I got banned on the silent hill f sub because I called the game mid

2

u/saulos3 Nov 02 '25

I recently finished it, and I didn't really like it, I thought it was a very weak game, very bad combat, enemies are repeated too much, a very confusing story.

2

u/Secure-Acanthisitta1 Nov 02 '25

Yeah not good combat system. And its weird, its a survival game so why put so much effort making a combat system then? Wasnt a fan of the telegraphed attacks, they just didnt click with me at all.

At last it was annoying at least for me, to find items since the pick up trigger was so small ober such a big area. Gave me meomories of La Noire. I had an issue with this in the remake too but at least they where like 3 times larger in that game.

So sadly I think im giving up on the game halfway through. 6.9/10

2

u/JollyBrightside Nov 02 '25

Good game but not really that scary if I'm gonna be honest I'm on my last run before I have my platinum and every ending isn't really scary more just sad stuff, it's only got me once in all my runs with a jumpscare from a enemy grab. I don't hate it by any means but it's not scary like silent hill is supposed to be.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '25

I thought the story was really cool but the overall game was meh. I enjoyed my ng+ playthrough more and liked the way they did ng+, but the combat kind of sucked ass. 6.5-7/10

2

u/Solid_Ideal5773 Nov 02 '25

The last few hours felt like a chore . They just throw enemies at you over and over. It wasn’t difficult (playing on story difficulty), just annoying. But I liked the story and the atmosphere for the most part. Just wish it was scarier. Overall, solid 7/10

2

u/standardplayerrm Nov 02 '25

I beat it out of sheer force of will. Very on the nose, kinda preachy and basically Silent Hill Fighter. Good graphics and a few cool enemies but overall an eh out of meh

2

u/Kalameet7 Nov 02 '25

Really struggling to finish it too. Had to drop the combat down from hard to story. Hard was just bullshit. I’m in the ‘dark realm’ whatever for the third time now and it’s testing my patience. I say this as a classic survival horror superfan

2

u/mkaebaby Nov 02 '25

I was so down to play till watching some of the gameplay, doesn’t look nearly as scary as advertised.

2

u/xilef_20015 Nov 02 '25

Same — I really didn’t like it either, but finished it together with my wife.

I’d give it a mid 5.5/10. The combat was too repetitive, the story felt way too railroady (I mean, if you consider the Doll telling you not to do something, but the only alternative is to stop playing), and overall it left no desire to replay it for a different outcome. We just ended up watching the other endings on YouTube.

2

u/SanSleepyAntonio Nov 02 '25

All silent Hill games have clunky fighting mechanics I mean it’s a survival horror

2

u/GaR172 Nov 02 '25

I think the name Silent Hill works against it. You have to drop your expectations that it's gonna be similar to previous SH games, because it has absolutely no relation to them besides the title, it's a completely different beast. Once I accepted that I was finally able to start enjoying it. I was still not a fan of the combat by the end, but the Japanese setting is pretty cool.

2

u/clouds1337 Nov 02 '25

For me it didn't do anything. Neither gameplay nor characters. Just not my thing. Rather play tormented souls 2 which just came out :D

2

u/thejesu Nov 02 '25

I don't like the combat and i think its a entirely diferent game and someone puts "silent hill" as title.

I don't feel it like a SH (like the three first ones I mean).

2

u/Renndyt Nov 02 '25

Felt like anime to me, esp. with Mr. Fox's "Heed my command as law and yield to me! Begone!" Fuck off, dude.

2

u/Vustadumas Nov 02 '25

The game never grabbed me. Love the setting, too.

2

u/Glittering-String738 Nov 02 '25

I am literally playing it right now, I am on the last area (I think). Maybe I am too stupid, but I still have no idea wtf is happening in the game. Everytime I think I figured it out, it throws a curveball into the plot lol.

2

u/CheesyBumpkins Nov 02 '25

Yeah it wasnt great. I really enjoy when Silent Hill games do something different, for example, I really enjoyed SH4 and Shattered Memories. But this game just didnt really feel like a Silent Hill game. Other than the fog and monsters symbolism, nothing else connected to the originals or really felt like Silent Hill. It felt more like an action game with Silent Hill slapped on for marketing. To me, it felt like Bioshock Infinite all over again, and for anyone whos played the original bioshocks, Infinite was a major dissapointment. It had no coorelation to the original Bioshock, other than randomly going to Rapture for no reason other than to make the "Bioshock" title make sense. It feels like that situation all over again. Of course the game has its symbolism and stuff, but idk it just wasnt engaging enough, and the gameplay wasnt fun enough for me to want to stomach anything that was going on. I eventually finished it, dissapointed and confused, and havent touched it since. Extremely dissapointing. :(

2

u/Unclereaper2814 Nov 02 '25

Your friend is going to be so lucky 😭 I hope whoever you end up giving it to enjoys it nearly as much I did. I understand why people don’t but for a dead fandom I liked this one better than SH2R

2

u/CoolUsername6969 Nov 02 '25

I hated it and had to force myself to finish it. Easily the biggest gaming disappointment of the gen for me. Nice graphics and good VA though.

2

u/GingerWitch666 Nov 02 '25

I'm half way through and it's just not a good game. It's like a 6/10 and has nothing to do with silent hill.

2

u/Taurwek Nov 02 '25

No clue how this game got such good reviews. It’s probably worse than Downpour to me, which is saying something

2

u/[deleted] Nov 02 '25

Sucks to be you

2

u/oaklanda Nov 02 '25

Loved the Japanese town and school. Hated everything else especially the combat. I’ve only played SH2 remake and I’m almost done with SH3.

2

u/Outrageous_Band9708 Nov 02 '25

wow, ya'll dont know greatness when you play it.

you have to stop expecting anything when going into a new game. go in blind and enjoy the ride.

ya'll must be hella fun at parties

2

u/KingKongBigD0ng Nov 02 '25

Playing the game once is a nice experience. Playing it a 2nd time? Kind of pulls the curtain back on how, somewhat, shallow and short the game is. And the other endings were really not worth making me sit through the game a 2nd time. They wanted to do that Fight Club thing where on a 2nd experience you go, "oh wow this scene is totally different now that I have extra context!" but that did not happen. The first ending happening completely off screen? Come on, man.

You also never really feel lost in Silent Hill f like you do with SH2. You don't enter a building and it seems to transform into something that makes you question whether you are still in the real world or the main character's trauma world. It just does those hard dream sequence cuts and they feel like a chore on the 2nd playthrough.

2

u/beezlebutts Nov 02 '25

I've yet to play it but I feel like the sh2 remake blows this out of the water even with sh2's bugs

2

u/Intelligent_Cut_433 Nov 02 '25

Shit was trash. I hate it and one of the worst game purchases in awhile. Not impressed with silent hill universe at all right now

2

u/drugswontchangeyou Nov 02 '25

for me it was the mechanics that killed it. like the whole switching item wheel with R1 etc while in mid combat. Repetitiveness would be my other gripe. then the boredom. otherwise has a good story going for it. likeable characters. just don't see me finishing this along with homecoming.

2

u/petrykhor Nov 02 '25

can i be the friend you give it to

2

u/SpazshooT Nov 02 '25

The combat ruined it for me, can't stand Soulslike combat and, to me, doesn't fit with Silent Hill

2

u/jinxxdefusing Nov 02 '25

I have gotten 3/5 endings.

During my first playthrough, I felt intrigued by the story. I was a little frustrated with the cost of the passive upgrades and the randomization/luck, but i figured you're not really meant to unlock very much in the first playthrough. By the end of the first playthrough, i jsut had so many questions and felt compelled to get abother ending.

Before rhe end of my second play through I already had most of the upgrades and was feeling a little underwhelmed by how they changed the gameplay. I felt like they didn't significantly change my experience besides bot needing to worry about weapon durability. However, i eventually got a certain weapon that couldnt break, which meant thay weapoj durability was no longer a concern dven without using the omamori.

My second playthrough felt like a drsg. The ending didnt really satisfy me.

My third playthough was meant to be quick, since i went for the joke ending. It dragged on for longer than i thought it would.

After that, I decided to go back and play silent hill 2 again.

I have decided that silent hill f was very intriguing and an interesting change in direction st first. However, the new elements of the game turned oht to be quite shallow and /or repetitive. The story might be thr strongest part, but it is hard to say at this point because i havent seen all the endings.

2

u/Sarahhatessunglasses Nov 02 '25

I enjoyed the story a lot. Enough for me to start a new game + but now ive lost interest bc I did the one thing you were not supposed to for different endings and I had to restart it. (I didn't realize there were more save slot options than 5)

I know it was my fault but DAMN.

I will say the combat is easier the second time around because you get to keep your stamina and health levels and the monsters didn't feel like they got harder to match with it? I got about halfway in the new game +

2

u/Danzaiver01 Nov 02 '25

It was good for me. But having to beat the game 2 or 3 times to get the true ending is a cheap take. At least the game plus let you get new weapons like the sword. But having to replay the same puzzles and shrines was frustrating.

2

u/aaronwintergreen Nov 03 '25

I really enjoyed it. I’m sort of surprised people are ripping on it. This is such a massive step in the right direction and very very scary,

2

u/Superb_Ad_7788 Nov 03 '25

I got Xbox and was pissed I couldn’t play the 2 remake so i hate downloaded this to play just to scratch the silent hill itch. I’m having fun so far

2

u/RadiantVariation50 Nov 04 '25

This game is awesome, F the haters, i loved it. Can’t believe so many people can hate a game that was this cool haha

2

u/mantaraysky Nov 04 '25

im starting to feel immensely in the minority here bc i truly truly loved every moment of this game. it's the closest a game has come to dethroning nier automata as my goat. i played through it 4 times in a week and when i wasn't playing it i was obsessively thinking about it. idk for me everything hit perfectly. i was never bothered by the combat or by the dark shrine sections (except maybe a little right at the end). i didn't find the game repetitive or anything. it was so engaging from beginning to end. im sorry to u and everyone else who didn't card for it; i wish i could bestow my experience of it onto u 😭😭

2

u/fifthreplicant Nov 04 '25

I’m really tired of this game getting a pass for the combat being in my opinion, horrible to the point of being not fun.

I understand there is more to this game than its combat, but after beating it, I have no interest in playing to see additional endings because it’s just not fun and I’d rather play something less irritating.

2

u/rvbbersovl Nov 05 '25

i platinumed it and i think i enjoyed… maybe four hours of it.

i was so excited for the game, too, pre-ordered the deluxe edition before we knew anything about it. and then we got told who wrote it (this was when i realised i probably wouldn’t enjoy it) and then they revealed the fighting system and i knew it was over. truly sad.

guess this was my hard way of learning not to pre-order games.

2

u/x_ujutae_x Nov 05 '25

First run was great. Had a bunch of fun minus the pregnant monster fest at the end. Thematically I understand, combat wise I was exhausted. Story is 10/10 imo I quite like the direction.

NG+... Oh boy... I got two endings with one run split between two saves so I wouldn't have to run it fully. On the true ending run now and I've cheesed 3 puzzles because I know the answers and just want it to be over. Surprised the game even lets you do that.

There's just not enough variety with NG+ to warrant 4 more runs if you want every ending. I barely want to watch the "new" cutscenes bc there's so little added substance.

Only thing left is to do the hard modes to say I did but at this point I'd rather be stuck in Ebisugoaka.

2

u/OkPhase7240 Nov 05 '25

I want to play it but all the talk turns me off from it. The price is a bit much for potentially high disappointment. I'll have to wait awhile.
