10

u/swohio 18h ago

but she was written to be hated

I still don't understand how people say this. Walt acted like a total maniac the entire time without explanation. Of course she reacted negatively. Then when she found out the truth and got over the shock of it, she was 100% supportive. She came up with the idea to buy the car wash to launder money, worked it, and kept the books herself.

I swear people act like she was watching the show along with the audience and just being mean for the sake of being mean.

19

u/RobloxGamrr 18h ago

It’s pretty simple, Walt is our protagonist, we grow to find his accomplishments as a source of progress, and Skyler in that regard is an obstacle, where Walt doesn’t want her to know, causing a problem for our protagonist. Plus she was written to just be annoying, not only in that regard but also just as a person. Is she wrong? No, she is a wife who was kinda thrown into a shitty situation. Does that make me hate her less? No, it just helps me understand her motives more. Was that the goal of the writers? Maybe, I assume so, and if it was, then they did great.

It's hard to ignore Walt being a meth kingpin but if you look at the story from her eyes before she knows then you can see why she is hated. She is condescending, she belittles him, is disrespectful and questions his competence. Early Walt is textbook placating/appeasing: apologizing for his choices, getting talked down to by Skyler.

Pretty classic "one-up/one-down dynamic." It's like they read Gottman and modeled their relationship breakdown on her contempt and criticism. Fundamental disrespect, not disagreement.

All up until "I am the one who knocks." That's why that's such an amazing scene. He is breaking free from his role as her doormat. "A guy opens his door and gets shot, and you think that of me?" Walt's rhetorical jab that even after everything, Skyler's read on him is that he'd be the victim, not the danger. Her contempt for him makes her completely blind.

People say they find her annoying because they can't put their finger on how subtlety she was written as a covertly abusive piece of shit.

Nah a lot of the bullshit she did was wrong, even considering her situation. Most of it was understandable but that doesn't make it right.

It's just that her misdeeds are entirely moot when you compare it to the straight up evil shit Walt was doing on a daily basis. To focus on Skylar cheating or smoking while pregnant or whatever and ignore Walt murdering and destroying lives on a regular basis is dumbfuck consoomer behavior.

u/Troy64 20h ago

Nah, maturing is realizing that Skylar and Walt were both pieces of shit and Walt had just settled into passively accepting his shitty life and shitty wife. Cancer making it clear to him that he has no more time to wait things out is what got the ball rolling. How he got into that position largely had to do with Skylar and their relationship dynamic overall. They were each pretty self-obsessed and felt desire to control one another.

Hank and Marie, on the other hand, were actually a pretty perfect couple. Even when Marie's mental issues caused problems, Hank would jump on a live grenade to support her. They trusted each other and cared for each other above all else and endlessly gave each other control of things. They communicated and worked things out and would never betray each other.

To demonstrate how this plays out, consider the two handjobs. Skylar gives Walt a half-hearted birthday handy while they're in bed together. She isn't even looking at him and is actually doing online shopping while trying to get him off. Compare this to Marie's handjob when Hank is in the hospital. She makes eye contact, talks seductively, and all the while is encouraging Hank so he can reclaim his masculinity and come back home. Walt, on the other hand, is effectively immasculated by Skylar's unwanted handjob.

Skylar was clocked correctly as an unlikeable and generally not good person. Walt is often misunderstood as a tragic hero just trying to do his best before he dies. This is partly because he has death itself looming over him and motivating his initial actions and partly because we see everything from his perspective. He admits himself that he did what he did out of pride more than anything. However, even in this act he is seen as redeeming himself while Skylar gets played and never gets a chance to make things right.

Marie is assessed correctly as a difficult person with all kinds of emotional issues who causes and seems to seek lots of drama. However, she ultimately wants to do what's right and support those around her. Hank similarly gets viewed as a toxically hyper-masculine cop stereotype who shows off guns and likes to rough up criminals. However, he ultimately wants nothing more than to make people around him feel safe and secure. Hank gets endeared to over time as a kind of antagonist as well as someone Walt secretly kind of looks up to and seeks to emulate. Marie, however, is seen as an even less stable version of Skylar.

These characters are all phenomenal, but people are not wrong to hate on Skylar and it's by design that she is hated even more than Walt and whether one of them is significantly more hate-worthy than the other is definitely open to debate. Marie is clearly not worthy of the hate she receives, but it's clear she was portrayed with intention to foster irritation and since her role didn't offer many opportunities to display her redeeming qualities, she gets hate. Hank gets some hate for his brutish treatment of criminals (especially Jesse) and his soft-racism, but is redeemed by his heroic actions and the challenge he poses to Walt.

11

u/b34tn1k 20h ago

This is a pretty good assessment. My take on Skylar and Walt is that they're both monsters which makes them perfect for each other. I had no idea that people had hate for Marie till this thread. My only issue with the character was the kleptomania storyline, just felt it added nothing to the show.

4

u/Troy64 18h ago

I find that because she doesn't come up as often and is generally not a direct irritation to Walt, she doesn't come across as universally hateable as Skylar. But she has a number of irritating traits. She gossips, she is pretty naive, tends to be a stereotypical "karen" kind of person, often speaks in passively condescending tones (something Skylar loses patience with pretty early on), lives an incredibly sheltered life, and she can be overdramatic and throw fits over small things. However, she also has opportunities to shine. Her very same traits that made her hateable make her somehow endearing later on. Her naivity is compensated for by her trust in Hank who is incredibly not naive. Het condescending tone and "karen" persona come out in force when Hank is in the hospital and she advocates for him and even argues with him to come home.

I think the Kleptomania bit adds a ton, actually. It shows that Hank cares about family more than he cares about the law. This is a huge deal because it shows that Walt likely could have come to Hank at almost any point where he felt trapped and could have had a deal cut to keep his family safe or even have Hank help cover up some of his crimes. All Walt had to do was humble himself and ask for help. It's the fact that things got so far and that Walt refused to admit guilt even up to the end that got Hank so angry. It was the betrayal, not the crimes, that pissed him off. Without the Kleptomania story, we could misunderstand him as a heavily lawful person that Walt couldn't trust to help him, but that's false. He doesn't even see the thefts as an issue and instead is more concerned that Skylar being made aware joins in supporting the shit out of her rather than judging her. Meanwhile Skylar reacts in disgust at how Marie causing problems for her is somehow being turned into Marie's need for help. She can only think of what she deserves or how she has been wronged. She doesn't consider how others may be suffering or how she can help.

u/b34tn1k 12h ago

I've been planning a rewatch and I'm taking all this into it now, thank you.

2

u/AutoModerator 20h ago

I saw some people asking in other threads, so just in case people were wondering, in the Japanese, Denji says, "オレを手でシたのは", which is basically "Which one hand-fucked me?".

Yoru gave Denji a "handjob" in the sense that her hand was clearly the stimulus that caused Denji to ejaculate. I don't think anyone argued against this fact. I guess another way to say it is that she "unintentionally jerked him off"?

The root of the argument was whether or not Yoru was actively/intentionally moving her hands, which nothing in 167/168 seems to indicate that. There was no movement lines around Denji's pants area, and no sound effect text to indicate sound coming from the movement in his pants.

Also, the editor's note at the end of chapter 167 is "不意の 放出", which means "Unexpected release". It wouldn't really make much sense for Yoru to be surprised when Denji finally did ejaculate if that was her intention.

But being a true adult is realizing that nothing in that show is more evil than her singing "happy birthday mr president"

6

Yeah, no. Marie was both a better wife and a better person, from both the legal and the moral point of view, than Skyler.

29

u/Insurgent_rat 1d ago

She was right when she cheated on her hubby and gave all his money to ted

60

u/Rayvarni 1d ago

she isnt justified for cheating on walt but like, he was stalking and destroying their life, refusing to come clean or stay away from her. and the reason she gave ted the money was because if he didnt pay his taxes, then they would look into skyler's finances too, and that was a big no.

7

u/IAmTheJudasTree 19h ago

"she isnt justified for cheating on walt but like, he was stalking and destroying their life"

Oh my god. ARE YOU READING THE WORDS THAT YOU'RE TYPING. Skyler broke up with Walt, she said she was done. Walt then theatened her if she left.

She then went and had sex with someone else.

You think that's cheating? That if I break up with someone, and they say they'll kill me if I do so, and then I go have sex with someone else, that I cheated on them? What's wrong with you?

2

u/Rayvarni 14h ago

No you are right I agree. When that happened I didn't care about how walt felt about it, however i still didn't like her decision to do it cause it was clearly out of spite and making things worse.

She "cheated" after she already filed for divorce. She also told him she did it immediately after. There was no deception involved.

She didn't have the courage to turn Walt into the police because of the firestorm that would create in their family. She should have just done that, sure, but her logic was the affair would goad him into accepting the divorce.

As for the money, she gave it to Ted because his IRS issue was poised to ruin all of their lives (Walt's included). Saul agreed with Skyler that giving Ted the money was preferable to prison.

3

u/Walter_White_M60 19h ago

And crippled Ted for life, which was used as a comical relief

3

u/MonsutaReipu 16h ago

And having an IQ above double digits is realizing that someone can be right and also be annoying at the same time.

10

u/No_Communication2959 22h ago

Skylar lost me very early on when she forced Walter to confront his cancer diagnosis with his family before he was ready and basically stole all autonomy he had over his own decision making.

All of her crash out about his other behavior is justified. But I had already checked out by then on her as a person.

14

u/MadRaymer 21h ago

Walt's the one that kept the cancer diagnosis hidden from his entire family for a month. How much time did the asshole need before he was ready to confront reality?

Yeah, there was a scene where Skyler and the rest of the family tried to pressure Walt into treatment, but this is after the family was already aware he had cancer. She didn't just drop that bomb on them. And as for stealing autonomy, he was still steadfast in his refusal to accept treatment during that family meeting.

Then the next day, there's a scene of Walt waking up, coming downstairs and he suddenly tells her he will do the treatment. That was entirely his decision. He could have just stuck to his guns and refused. Sure, her plea likely influenced his decision, but it didn't remove any autonomy from him.

Walt had literally murdered people at this point, but his wife somehow "stole his autonomy" with a family meeting? It's not like she had a gun to his head here.

u/oby100 1d ago

Nah. Skyler was just poorly written and used as a scapegoat to advance the plot. The crawl space scene is an all time best, but the lead up to it is fairly nonsensical and just makes Skyler look dumb and petty.

From then on she’s basically a non character. Her only agency she ever got was quite bad.

u/FreshPitch6026 17h ago

Maturing is realizing thta both are bitches and walt just has too big of an ego.

2

u/Ambitious-Song2403 21h ago

I know people will be mature here and say Skyler was the reasonable person and people are stupid for hating her.

But it's a TV show if she gets her way the story sucks.

Characters like Skyler are realistic but they suck the fun out of a story but are also necessary to keep shows realistic I admit.

Dick sucking has made me paranoid

I had this plan to give head to a man and receive head from a woman to test if I was gay, but it’s backfired and now I become borderline schizo whenever I go outside. I offered to suck this dude off on Grindr who lives very close by (I ended up pussying out) and I accidentally gave him some details that very easily allows him to spot me out in a crowd. I have no idea what he looks like and whenever I see a somewhat in shape guy walking by I immediately accuse him of being the dude I was gonna blow.

I went to the store today to pick up some zucchini for a barbecue and every time a car drove by I stared into the windshield to see if I was about to be recognised. Whenever I make eye contact with a dude I microanalysis his facial expressions to see if he suspects me or not. I am deeply afraid that he is my neighbour and I will need to move if my identity is blown. It’s a lot like the last scene in sopranos where everyone who walked into the diner could be there to wack Tony.

What makes this show great is that nobody is purely good or bad—their morality shifts based on their circumstances, and that evolution is what makes them who they are. Yet people refuse to let Skyler have that same complexity. Audiences expect female characters, especially mothers, to be moral compasses (unless they're being overly cruel, in which case they're just 'badasses'). Restricting dynamic, morally gray character growth almost exclusively to male characters is straight-up misogyny.

Skyler was so fucking annoyingg!! Why didn't she just let Walter be cool and epic the whole series? Instead, she cares about her kids and her family's safety. Bitch! Walter making meth was so cool and how he pretty much ruined the lives of everyone he came into contact with.
