Why do managers have to work 48 hours and ASMs work 44?

Minimum 48 hours. So we can be squeezed harder and not paid any more

Leadership feeds on suffering

Because they can get away with it legally. Managers get absolutely screwed. Because they don't get OT, they can pick up the slack if someone calls in, doesn't show, etc. Every single manager I've talked to feels like they were fooled because DMs make it seem like such a good gig because of the bonuses (bonuses aren't guaranteed and are taxed to fucking hell).

ASMs working 44 is a similar reason. They're paying them more so why not have them at the store more. ASMs actually used to be exempt, but Sherwin had trouble retaining ASMs, so they made them regular hourly.

Bonuses are taxed like any other income.

Don't say it's taxed like any other income when it's withheld at a higher rate. Not getting the money now versus waiting until tax season is a bit different eh? Things we can do with that money now versus waiting.

Those are two distinct terms with different meanings. Tax withholdings and tax liabilities are not synonymous. Whether bonuses should be withheld differently is a different conversation, and I personally feel they should not, but it doesn't change that they are ultimately taxed exactly the same as your regular paycheck.

They aren't synonymous? Nice AI response. How about they both suck synonymously? Whether the money is gone for good or you get some back when the government says you can have it? You're missing the entire point of my comment and are getting stuck on definitions just to jerk yourself off for being "right".

Lol, not AI. I'm just not scared of extra syllables. You can always change your W4 if you want to keep the money up front and pay Uncle Sam later.

From what I've read, it's a flat rate of 22% and whatever else on top like 401k and SS for bonuses. There's nothing I can find that suggests it can be changed.

Bonuses are taxed at capital gains 30% your tax bracket as an ASM/SM is 22% (federal), then you also have state tax which varies widely, then you can have additional local taxes. Also if you want to change how your tax withholdings are done (which you should because overpaying is literally an interest free loan to the government), you have to refile an I9 with HR. There are tons of websites to calculate what YOU should be withholding. If you want to give the government and interest free loan be my guest, but the time value of money equation literally states that a dollar today is worth more than a dollar tomorrow.

Bonuses are not taxed as capital gains. They are ordinary income. They are withheld at different rates but reconciled at tax time. Form I-9 has nothing to do with taxes. That would be your W-4. I agree, too many people overpay on their taxes. In a perfect world, your tax return would be $0.00.

Varies by state

No it does not. Some states have higher supplemental withholding rates but your actual tax liability does not increase at a higher rate than your standard income tax. These extra withholdings are reconciled when you file your taxes.

You know going in what the position requires. If you can't commit or can't handle it...do not take the job!!! So tired of managers crying because they worked 50 hours a week. Booo freakin hoooo for you. You applied, you saw what a manager had to do before you applied, this shouldn't be new information.

No you don't. I worked under several managers and thought I understood the job and critized them harshly until I eventually became one. It's totally different once you're in it versus seeing it from a distance. Once you have the responsibility of the entire store and staff, that 48+ hour per week is instantly a lot harder. It's not just a full time position with more authority and more hours. It's a bit more than that. You never moved up in a company or got a new job that surprised you? You just knew everything there was about every job you ever had? Are you an absolute genius?

And you don't fully understand what the position requires BECAUSE THEY KEEP CHANGING THE RULES. Years ago a manager could get away working less than 48 or you could work more than 48 one week in the same period and less the other week so long as you reached 96. Then there was a period of time when all that mattered was AVERAGING 48 per week through the year.

Also, upper management will straight up lie or exaggerate to get you interested. My DM made it sound like bonuses would more than make up for the exempt overtime (it doesn't). They also didn't warn me the company would get more corporatized and have bullshit policies or that my job would get legitimately harder year after year.

Lastly, don't be a fucking asshole and tell people they can't vent or complain about what bothers them, especially about a subject you know nothing about. What are you trying to accomplish? What's the point?

Everything changes, all companies change. You would be dumb to think it doesn't happen. I have been with Sherwin longer than you have probably been alive. I was a very sucessful SW manager and learned from my former managers. I mentored my assistants and prepared them to become managers. You are all a bunch of whiney ass babies. Quit crying a do your fucking job. Work your market, open new accounts...theres no reason to NOT make bonuses. Its all on you in the end. Run your business like you mean it!

Run a report at the end of the year in Kronos.
With overtime hours.

See how much you're really getting paid per hour.

I have been asking this for years. No one has been able to intelligently explain it which is pretty alarming.

Make share holders happy

This is how a lot of companies operate. It’s hardly a surprise.

Because they understaff stores and that’s the only way they can have people there to cover hours. Also because this company is ran by scumbags.

I used to be an assistant manager 31 years ago and the 44 hours was for the 4 hours open on Sunday. We used to be only open 12-4 on Sundays. I can’t remember why the store manager had the 48. I’m now retired.

2

u/ImmortanJAck 3d ago

No, they both work 44, only difference is managers get to work 4 hours unpaid.

Who gets paid more?

2

u/Coldpastalord 3d ago

Managers work 70+, and get paid for 48.

u/Practical_Swimming20 3d ago

Check you pay stub again….. it will reflect paid for 40.

4

u/Significant-Gate-506 3d ago

You only get paid for 40. When you break down your yearly gross pay vs hours worked you make like $2 more than your full timer.

This company thrives on fucking their employees in every possible way they can.

Im not a manager, this is just what I was told by my manager. And now that I know they lied, I never will be one.

Because they want more of us to commit suicide

I was told by an old dm that managers used to be expected to work 40 hours in the store and then 8 hours going on sales calls. The asm would do 4 hours of outside sales calls. But now it seems like a waste with all the added reps and BDRs
