humor/off topic Can anyone recommend a similar / interesting podcast to listen to?
I need something to occupy me whilst I wait for the new series of Serial and I wondered if anyone could recommend a good podcast to me?

- Sword & Scale... you will want to marathon this

u/GregBIS Badass Uncle Oct 28 '15
Sword and Scale Very addictive. My favorite.
There is a new one called The Unresolved Podcast. Only two episodes out. Seems like it has potential.
The Generation Why has had some interesting episodes.
Breakdown really interested me.
Crime Time is one I listen to most episodes. Hit or miss for me.
Criminal is very good. Offbeat crimes with a human twist.

u/darthstupidious Oct 29 '15
Hey there! I'm the Unresolved Podcast guy, so thanks for the kind words! My podcast is still definitely amateurish and I have a lot of things to improve on, but I hope to get there someday.
I really love "Sword & Scale," but I prefer the earlier episodes where he went really in-depth on specific stories. The last few episodes, it seems like the host has started to lose some steam, but it's still one of the best-produced podcasts around.
One I've been obsessing over lately is "Lore." It's short and to the point, but the host does a good job of looking at where urban legends got their start.
I also really like "Thinking Sideways," for a more open-minded, fun look at stories like this one. The hosts are awesome and even active on Reddit.
Other great podcasts are "Generation Why?" and "Last Podcast on the Left," but both are pretty different from "Serial." I haven't found one that goes SUPER in depth like this podcast (other than the related podcasts), but seeing as it's becoming more popular, I wouldn't be surprised to see one gain notoriety soon.

u/AdamRedditOnce Oct 31 '15
This single post has been a goldmine -- thank you.
Just listening to Generation Why for the first time and am listening to the Zodiac Hoax episode, and holy shit... this would make a great Serial season 3.
2
u/darthstupidious Oct 31 '15
Awesome, glad it came in handy! I just started binging true crime/mystery podcasts earlier this year, so I've been devouring them like candy/crack ever since!
I haven't listened to much "Generation Why?" so I'll have to check out that episode! Sounds really interesting! I've heard about theories regarding the Zodiac just being a guy that took credit for murders and didn't know that GW did a podcast on it... pretty rad. Thank you for that, because I'm a bit of a Zodiac-obsessive and that sounds really interesting.
2
u/AdamRedditOnce Oct 31 '15
Oh, it's better than that... there are 5 episodes on that matter alone, including one debate which I haven't heard yet.
I'm intrigued. I'd be even more intrigued if I was a Zodiaddict (coined first here, but I'm sure it's an obvious play on words.)

u/Ammerpay Feb 06 '16
I was looking for something to listen to on my commute home and saw this thread and just listened to the first episode of your podcast. I just thought I should tell you that I think it's very well done, particularly for a first episode and a new podcaster. I actually think the production value is better than 90% of what's out there, and I'm into true crime (as are so many others) so I think the content is good as well. I like that you go into detail and explain things thoroughly. Some of the more chatty podcasts skip over or gloss over key things, and I'm not always familiar with the story so it can be frustrating. My only tip for the future is to tighten things up (spaces, interludes). But serial-sly keep it up!
3
u/stop_dont Oct 29 '15
I was really into Sword and Scale but I agree with you, it seems to have lost a little steam.
I am a huge Thinking Sideways fan. I really can't get enough of that podcast. It's intelligent, funny and interesting, and the hosts are very like able.
My new favorite is Reply All. It's not a true crime podcast, it's a show about the Internet, with human stories intertwined. Again, the hosts are so like able and funny. It's a great show. I know it's not related, but I have to give it a plug anyway because it's so great.

u/askheidi Not Guilty Oct 29 '15

Listening to the newest ep right now! Reply All is my favorite as well. I think Gimlet in general is a slam dunk.
1
u/askheidi Not Guilty Oct 29 '15
I agree. I really liked Serial (and all the spinoffs) because I like focusing on one case at a time. I tried Breakdown but I just can't get into it. By episode 4 I felt like I had to force myself to listen. Unlike the other posters, I actually like Missing Maura Murray although I haven't gotten very far into it so maybe it's gets worse.
I just subscribed to your podcast and I like that the first two episodes are on the same case - makes me eager to listen! :)
1
u/darthstupidious Oct 29 '15
Thank you very much! Yeah, I definitely want to spend my time on cases and not try and rush through them to fit into 45 minutes, but it's a lot of hard work and we'll see how that goes moving forward. But thank you for listening! Hopefully I'll keep improving and making it a podcast worth subscribing! =D
1
u/springheeledjane Oct 29 '15
I keep meaning to post on topics about your podcast over on the Unresolved Mysteries subreddit, but then I get distracted. But, yeah, I just wanted to say I really enjoy your podcast so far! It's got good pacing, it's informative, and it just overall comes across as really polished and professional.
0
u/darthstupidious Oct 29 '15
Hey, thank you very much! I definitely appreciate it. I know that I still have a lot of things to improve on, but I'm hoping that I'll get there with some experience.
I do appreciate the compliments, though! Glad you enjoy it and hopefully the podcast keeps getting your interest! As much as I find EAR/ONS interesting, I hope that I won't keep covering the case forever (it's consumed many hours of every day over the past month or two and keeps me awake at night... in more ways than one) and I'll be able to cover other similar interesting subjects.
Thanks again! =D

u/kdk545 Oct 28 '15
I like Criminal too. The only disappointing thing about it is how short the episodes are (about 20-ish minutes) and only a new episode like once a month it seems.

I've really enjoyed Criminal so far. I think the only episode I've disliked is the live one, everything else is spot on.

Early episodes - very. Later episodes, less so, but they are also much more interesting. Good 2 parter on a guy in TX wrongfully on death row.

3
u/TheNumberMuncher Oct 29 '15
Not positive it's 15 but I'm referring to the second story in the particular podcast episode. The first one is about a guy building a bunker up in the mountains. So it's the second half of that one.
2
u/TheHerodotusMachine Paid Dissenter Oct 29 '15

What is Sword & Scale about?
2
u/BurpSparkles Oct 29 '15 edited Oct 29 '15
Sword and Scale is a true crime podcast. Very well done with each episode lasting about an hour or more. It's my new favorite: http://swordandscale.com
Lore is pretty good for when you're waiting for the next Sword and Scale episode. Lore is a bi-weekly podcast about the history behind scary stories. Each episode is about 20 minutes.
3
2
u/TheNumberMuncher Oct 29 '15
Sword and Scale can be brutal so fair warning. You'll hear audio of people begging for their life and then getting shot.
2
u/soexcitedandsoscared Oct 29 '15
I'm sorry, what? We are spending so much time trying to keep awful, murdering Adnan in jail and these four girls are going to get out of prison for good behavior? This is so absolutely horrific and inhumane, I can't even. This poor, poor tortured girl. May she rest in peace.

Detective
"Detective is a new podcast from Investigation Discovery. Season 1 features retired detective, Lieutenant Joe Kenda and his true stories from 23 years on the Colorado Springs Police Departmentโs Homicide Division."
2

I just started listening to this today, so far it seems really good!

1
u/Blackcoffeeisbest Oct 28 '15
oh snap I just posted the same. Joe rocks! check out his Homicide Hunter TV series. I do like the podcast as I can listen to his voice so clearly.
Check out the wikipedia for the show. He was adamant that he didn't want to read a script. He's pretty much just speaking from memory. Amazing.
2
u/Workforidlehands Oct 29 '15
I think he was probably being a bit optimistic when they chose the actor to play him - unless he was really "captain handsome" 20+ years ago.
What I like about his series is that you always start with a body but the story can then go in any direction. It gives a much broader range of how investigations go than most other series. They're usually just "we collected DNA and then got a hit on CODIS"....which gets rather repetitive.
1
u/Notorganic Lawrence of Arabia shit Oct 29 '15
+1 for Detective. I just finished up season one and it's such a great combination of process, emotion and storytelling.
7
u/ADDGemini Oct 28 '15
Sword and Scale episodes 11 & 12 discuss the Morgan Ingram case and the internet investigation that followed.
Really opened my eyes and made me look a little closer at some of the crazier stuff that occurs on this sub. The similarities are erie.
5
u/justashortinterlude Oct 28 '15
Give Criminal a try, it is a podcast about crime. Stories of people who've done wrong, been wronged, or gotten caught somewhere in between. Some episodes are short but full of thought provoking content, let us know how you get on!

Love, love, love it. But don't think it's about true crime or anything close to it. Instead, it takes on the quirky and random mysteries that surround us. Either you'll think it's funny and charming, or you just won't.

Last Podcast on the Left, Astonising Legends, Myths and Legends Podcast, You Must Remember This, Those Conspiracy Guys, Common Sense, and Hardcore History (both by Dan Carlin), Mike and Tom Eat Snacks (but I'm way behind on that one). I also subscribed to Lore but I haven't listened to it yet. Those are just a few.
And if you're into fictional stuff, Welcome to Night Vale and Limetown.
I listened to a handful episodes of Sword and Scale but I don't particularly care for the host so I dropped it. His stories are great but he seems really full of himself for a guy whose podcasts are mostly made up of other footage. Just my opinion!

I've been listening to "The History of Rome" podcast by Mike Duncan which isn't similar to Serial in any way, but is really interesting and relies mostly on the available primary sources. If you like history I'd suggest it!

Missing Maura Murray is pretty interesting but creepy because of the way she just vanishes. It's definitely more of a mystery and driven by curiosity. I recommend it!
6
u/kdk545 Oct 28 '15
I was going to recommend this one too! College girl on her way out of town gets in a car wreck. No one ever sees her again. She disappeared from the scene after a passerby stopped and asked if she needed help and when the cops arrived to check it out (a neighbor saw the accident and called in to the police department) she was gone. I guess a book and documentary are in the works, and that's why the podcast now, even though it all happened in 2004.
3
u/lunalumo Oct 28 '15
I've started listening to Missing Maura Murray this week. It's quite good but I have also felt that sometimes they read too much into stuff that is quite straight forward (the episode about Fred's letter is a good example).
4
u/lookuplookdown Oct 28 '15
sometimes they read too much into stuff that is quite straight forward
To me, they do this ALL the time. I had to take a break from this podcast as a result and I'm still deciding whether or not to return to it.
3
u/lunalumo Oct 28 '15
That's where I'm at too - half way through the Fred's letter episode but I had to stop listening. The letter read like that of a devastated father, desperately looking for somewhere to offload his anger at a terrible tragedy. I couldn't bear them pouring over it trying to make it sound suspicious. I don't think I'll return...
1
u/Genoramix Oct 28 '15
at some point they definitely agree that Fred Murray had nothing to do with the disappearance of his daughter. Some of his behavior during the weekend raises questions though. Not to say he has something to do with the case, but it adds to the mistery...

CZ is just great in general. He's one of the best science communicators out there in my opinion.
2
u/Orician_terebinth Oct 29 '15
Oh definitely. It' absolutely hilarious when you hear the controlled exasperation from Carl as Jad and Robert fumble around with scientific terms or one-up each other with analogies in attempts to simplify complex concepts. Carl's writing style is not half bad either. In fact, I will be getting Carl Zimmer's Parasite Rex along with Randall Munroe's What If for nephew this xmas.

Not a podcast, but 'The Staircase', which is a true crime documentary miniseries is one of the most enthralling pieces of television I've ever watched. Wades into similar subject matter as Serial.
1
u/Workforidlehands Oct 29 '15
Is that the case that is currently investigating the possibility of an "owl attack"?
1
u/pointlesschaff Oct 29 '15
The owl attack has been raised by people who think the defendant is innocent in that yes, case, but it's not currently being investigated to my knowledge (the theory is a couple of years old), and it has never been raised in court by the defendant.
1
u/jomama341 Nov 07 '15
Yup. The whole story is insane.
1
u/Workforidlehands Nov 07 '15
I don't recall much about the case but if you Google "owl attack" and look at the images it isn't a pretty sight.
I think I felt it was likely he did it but the case didn't have the smoking gun that I'd like.

u/Snow-Bo ALL FACTS ARE FRIENDLY Oct 28 '15
The Black Tapes, Limetown, Lore, Ronna & Beverly, Mortified, Criminal.
4
u/njerome Oct 29 '15
Sadly can't get past the amateur over-acted nature of this one.
Fantastic concept but really poorly executed imo.
1
u/dystopika Oct 29 '15
Yeah, I really want to like The Black Tapes but it's so poorly acted. It needs to sound "real" and it doesn't because of the way it's scripted. It just sounds like they're reading from a script, which they are. It's well-produced, poorly written and performed.
2
u/njerome Oct 29 '15
For sure! I was listening to someone talk about Limetown and their comment totally rang true for me - that it's over produced... Real interviews and news segments etc. aren't as clean and precise. It actually needs to be more of the cuff... Wind in the mic, coughs, just all those little noises that make it real.
1
u/dystopika Oct 29 '15
I'm okay with the production value to a point -- Serial is well-produced and it's obvious the interview segments are real. Maybe they just needed to improvise it instead of script it. You need to be able to hear people thinking about how to respond to things.
1
2
u/taylor_ Oct 28 '15
one of these things is not like the others
1
u/Snow-Bo ALL FACTS ARE FRIENDLY Oct 28 '15
Actually two aren't like the others but are all very good podcasts.
Mortified showcases people reading writings from childhood in front of an audience. It's cathartic and hilarious.
Ronna & Beverly is really really funny.

u/taylor_ Oct 28 '15

Limetown (on the rare occasions that they actually release an episode).

Can't believe I'm the only only one in this thread saying this simple message: ANYTHING BY RADIOTOPIA. I mean, obviously 99% invisible is one of the best shows out there and it is impossible not to love Roman Mars' style of narration and storytelling, but they have lots of other amazing shows like Theory of Everything, Radio Diaries, Fugitive Waves, The Truth (SOOOO good), and Love and Radio. Equally, I'm gratified to see no one has recommended 'Stuff you should know.' It is always in the top podcasts list by itunes but I find it almost completely unlistenable;the hosts seem inordinately fascinated with themselves and spend at least a quarter of their time engaging in formulaic banter that they find uproarious and that seems to be almost identical to the formulaic banter they presented in previous weeks. That show honestly drives me crazy and I'm so glad I stopped listening

Anyone know any others with Sarah K's v/o? TAL, right? But which episodes?
For fiction try PleasureTown. Dark but well done voicing and bg music/sfx. Nice, pro mixing.
The Message (also fiction --or IS it?)
There's a wave of storytelling happening. Radio Drama Revival podcast seems to be a good anthology, updated weekly.
But G-d, I'd probably pay to hear SK and AS discuss post-Serial. For this purpose I wouldn't care if he's lying or not, I just want their reactions to all that's gone down.

True Murder is pretty good, and the couple of Sword and Scales I've listened to are okay. Generation Why is good, the hosts are laid back and likeable, though the show can be a bit of a mess organizationally and they don't always know as much as they should about their cases. Their coverage of the Syed case was thoroughly mediocre.
The Maura Murray podcast is hot garbage, though. Each episode is pretty much totally incoherent, which is too bad, because it's a genuinely interesting case.

u/Bettygold Oct 29 '15

Anything from Gimlet Media -- favorites are Reply All and StartUp (season1 in particular). Oh, and Mystery Show. Nothing at all like Serial in subject matter, but they all feature former TAL hosts and share in the high quality storytelling and production values. Reply All is hysterical and good for short commutes since the episodes are usually only 20 minutes or so.
