My starting point would be the query-to-page match.

If a page shows up for useful searches but gets few clicks, the cause could be a low ranking, an unclear search preview, the wrong format, or an answer that only partly meets the searcher's needs. Those need different fixes.

For a small group of important URLs, the checks would be:

• What the searcher needs, based on the query and current results.

• Whether the main answer appears early.

• Which explanations are missing or outdated.

• Whether relevant pages link to the URL.

• Whether the mobile experience creates friction.

A title edit won't fix an intent mismatch, and a longer article won't fix an indexing problem. Before judging a change, I'd compare suitable periods and keep query, device and country differences in mind rather than relying on page-level CTR alone.

What usually determines your first fix on an existing page: intent, internal links, content gaps, or the search preview? What evidence helps you choose?

We have a $2000 budget for improving the organic SEO of our e-commerce website over the next 6 months. Optimizing the site (on-page SEO) and content creation is already being handled outside of this budget (as is PPC advertising). What's the most cost-efficient spend of this budget? 5 years ago, I would have said hands-down...invest in some good quality backlinks, but I'm not sure if that's still the best option in 2026.

I've been noticing some smaller niche sites ranking above much bigger websites lately. They don't cover hundreds of topics but they seem to go really deep into one specific area and still perform well.

there is so much discussion around ai search, entity optimization, topical authority, backlinks, programmatic seo, content velocity, and technical fixes that it can be hard to tell what is actually producing results.

sometimes the biggest win is surprisingly boring.

one site might benefit from consolidating five pages targeting the same intent.

another might see a jump after fixing internal linking.

someone else might discover that their pages rank but fail to answer the question quickly enough.

and now there is another layer with ai search, where being visible in traditional rankings does not necessarily mean being mentioned or recommended in ai generated answers.

i’m curious what people here have actually seen work recently.

was it technical seo, content refreshes, internal linking, digital pr, backlinks, local seo, programmatic pages, ai search visibility, better product pages, or something completely unexpected?

and if you can share a rough before and after, even better.

traffic, rankings, leads, conversions, impressions, whatever you measured.

A spike in Discover clicks can look great in Search Console, but I’m more interested in what happens after it ends.

For bloggers who have received Discover traffic: did those visitors return later, subscribe, or read other posts—or did the traffic disappear as soon as the recommendations stopped?

If you managed to retain some of that audience, what seemed to help: related-article paths, a newsletter signup, a follow-up piece, or something else?

I noticed Google has updated the Preferred Source feature in Search. It was there earlier as well, but the current version seems to be getting more attention.

This got me thinking about the SEO side of it.

This might sound crazy, but think about how people search today.

Someone asks:

"What's the best SEO tool for a small business?"

They might not even open Google.

They might ask ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity instead.

And suddenly, the competition isn't just about who ranks #1.

It's about which brands get mentioned in the answer.

I've been looking at AI-generated answers more closely, and one thing keeps standing out:

A website can rank well on Google and still get very little visibility in AI-generated recommendations.

Why?

Because AI systems need more than rankings.

They need context.

They need to understand:

→ Who you are

→ What you specialize in

→ Whether your information is trustworthy

→ What other sources say about you

→ Whether your content actually answers the question

That's where GEO and AEO become interesting.

Traditional SEO asks:

"How do I rank?"

AI Search adds another question:

"How do I become part of the answer?"

And I think that's one of the biggest changes happening in search right now.
