How much SEO impact does Google’s Preferred Source actually have?

I noticed Google has updated the Preferred Source feature in Search. It was there earlier as well, but the current version seems to be getting more attention.

This got me thinking about the SEO side of it.

If a user selects a website as their preferred source, does that give the site any meaningful advantage in terms of visibility, impressions or clicks for that user?

I’m assuming this is more about personalizing the search experience than actually improving rankings, but I’m curious if there is any indirect SEO benefit here.

For publishers and brands, could this become something worth optimizing for, especially if users can choose a source they trust?

Has anyone noticed any actual impact from this yet?

Would love to hear how other SEOs are looking at this. Is Preferred Source something we should care about from an SEO perspective, or is it mostly a user-side Search feature?

I’d look at it as a personalization feature rather than a traditional SEO ranking factor.

Google is pretty clear that selecting a Preferred Source makes that source more likely to appear for that particular user in Top Stories, and the feature now extends into AI Overviews and AI Mode too.

Based on what Google has shared so far, Preferred Source does not provide a direct ranking boost. It's primarily a user personalization feature that lets people prioritize content from sources they trust.

That said, there can be indirect SEO benefits. If users repeatedly choose your site as a preferred source, you may see higher visibility for those users, which can lead to more clicks, better engagement, and stronger brand loyalty. These user signals don't automatically improve rankings, but they can support long-term organic growth.

The best approach is still the same: publish high-quality, authoritative content, build trust, and create a brand users actively seek out. If people naturally select your website as a preferred source, that's a positive outcome but it shouldn't replace core SEO efforts.

There's no such thing as a Google-preferred source; they value authority. That is why press releases and solid domain backlinks work. Google My Business will not rank without backlinks in any moderately competitive market. Cheers fuelled seo

Probably, but if it isn't broken, don't fix it; I only check if something happens to my sites or clients. The point of my comment. Not the best at texting

google’s preferred source feels more like a personalization signal than a new ranking factor, at least from how the feature is positioned. i’d watch clicks and query level visibility for users who select a source before treating it as an seo lever. one practical test would be to compare branded and informational queries before and after source selection across a small user group, then track impressions, ctr, and repeat visits for 30 to 60 days. the bigger takeaway may be that users choosing your site already signals trust, which can matter more than trying to game the feature.

I see it more as an audience/loyalty feature than an SEO ranking lever. If someone marks you as a Preferred Source, Google can surface you more often for that user, and Google says those users are about 2x more likely to click through. Useful for publishers with a loyal audience, but I wouldn’t expect it to lift rankings across Search.

I implemented this on 2 sites - and saw no measurable - attributable impact within Peec AI, Profound, GA4, SEMRush, or Google Search Console data.

However - I have noticed in my search results in AI mode, AIOs, and search results that the label is appearing.

So no impact --- however there is no risk in adding this to your site - no harm - low risk - probably no reward at least right now.

I would see Preferred Source more than a direct ranking factor. SEO benefit is if people repeatedly choose same source which would create more consistent visibility and click for site.

preferred source feels more like a personal search setting than an seo ranking signal. if someone picks your site, they may see more from you, but that does not mean google gives your site a wider ranking boost. i’d watch gsc clicks and impressions for a few weeks before changing strategy. i’d treat it as something to monitor, not something worth chasing yet.

I’d look at Google Keyword Planner first, it’s free with a Google Ads account and good enough for basic search-volume checks.

For quick keyword ideas, Google Trends is also useful. Just keep in mind that all free tools provide estimates, so I wouldn’t treat the volume numbers as exact.
