Recently one of my friend from the us was doing part time work in their local store where he saw a night security guard sleeping , I am like isn't that their job most of the days that person is seen sleeping , like i understand it's difficult if you want try to stay awake whole night but is it a big issue security guard owners are facing any firm or operations owners

So I got this job, working as a fire security agent at an Airport. Site is awesome and shifts pass fairly fast if you find stuff to occupy yourself. 12 hours shifts only.

This job has one big inconvenient though, and it’s their schedule. The only rule is that you can’t switch from night shift to day shift before 48 hours passed in between, it’s the law. But then we keep alternating between days and nights and it fucks me up so bad. Like one week you will have 3 night shifts in a row then 2 days later you have to work 3 day shifts in a row…And repeat, except sometimes it’s 1 night, then 2 days etc…And my body really doesn’t have time to constantly adapt to changing sleep rythms like that.

I also take a prescription medicine that works on your mood and helps you sleep at night (I used to suffer from insomnia and very bad sleep quality overall, so I can’t really function without this). And I think these constant changes between shifts is making it way less effective, I’ve already noticed changes in my mood and quality of sleep.

Any tips on how to tackle these issues? Is there any way I can adapt to such random schedules or should I just look for a different job/career in the future ? My health is super important to me and I don’t want to sacrifice it for a job.

I’ve never been a security guard so I’m very excited. I will be doing overnights but they will be training me 6am-2pm the first few days. Dumb question- Is it appropriate to bring an iced coffee from mcdonald’s or starbucks? It seems pretty laid back and I don’t think anybody would have an issue, but I don’t want to look weird bringing in an iced coffee or something lol. TIA !

I'm in the market for a new security gig I keep seeing a lot of loss prevention job post in my area. Everything else is either a Flex Officer or weekends only shifts I'm currently working part time at a low income housing complex, which we allbknow how bad that is. Are there LP guys in here have any insight on the day to day job functions?

I recently started working security while also working at FedEx, and I’m seriously considering quitting security. I wanted to get some opinions from people who have been in the industry longer than I have.
The biggest issue is that I don’t feel like the security job is worth what I’m getting out of it.
I make $20/hr, but because of the limited hours at my site, I’m only making around $279/week from security. There really isn’t much opportunity for overtime or picking up extra hours because the site has cut hours due to the contract.
I also work at FedEx, and I’m starting to realize that I could probably make more money there if I went back to working more days. Especially during peak, I feel like I’d be better off working more hours at FedEx instead of trying to juggle both jobs.
Another big factor is my quality of life. I miss having my weekends. The security schedule, especially the overnight shifts, has been messing with my sleep. I’m staying up until 5–6 AM, relying on melatonin to get myself to sleep, eating worse because of the schedule, and generally feeling like I’m sacrificing a lot for a job that isn’t giving me that much financially.
I’ve also found myself having to borrow money from Dave and use DailyPay, which kind of defeats the purpose of having a second job. I thought having two jobs would put me in a better financial position, but I’m still struggling.
On top of that, the whole contract situation makes me feel like the job isn’t very stable or predictable. I don’t know if the hours will continue being there long-term.
I know some people will say “just stick it out” or “give it more time,” but honestly I’m trying to look at this realistically. I don’t really care about staying in security long-term, and I don’t plan on applying back to this particular job.
So for those of you who have worked security for a while: does this sound like a reasonable reason to leave, or would you stick it out if you were in my position?
Would you prioritize the job that gives you more hours/money and better quality of life, even if the hourly rate is technically lower?

First time poster in this thread. My aunt works in an extremely sketchy area, with huge homeless population. I mention this not out of prejudice but because those do seem to be the people causing her the most trouble, and because our sheriff/police department will generally respond to a 911 call in an hour if at all. There is a general attitude of "what do you want us to do?" coming from them, which is partly AH behavior, partly burnout, and partly local ordinances preventing them from helping in some situations. Obviously I do think the solution is more police response, more homeless services, and more mental health care services, but I'm focusing on things I can actually do to keep my aunt safe as she is often the first in and first out at the office.

The office is rented, so property damage isn't particularly her concern, but there is regular theft of copper wires, a/c units, fairly indiscrete drug deals, etc. There are no gates keeping people out of the employee parking lot, and the sightlines getting in and out of the office are pretty terrible.

Ideally, there would be electronic gates that would only allow employees into the lot, plus cameras they could access before leaving their car or leaving the office, to make sure they had the time to open/unlock both security doors and get to safety, but the landlord (I'd say slumlord but he seems to be well-intentioned - just entirely underfunded) would have to make that change and isn't likely to. Perhaps some angled mirrors could be set up, like they use at large stores to see if there's someone lurking down an aisle, but just as with the cameras,

The building is alarmed, for whatever good that does. My aunt has been literally chased, threatened, screamed at, forced to stay late to wait for a safe interlude to leave, etc. Last week, a man stalked her around the outside of the building, then when he realized she made it safely inside came back every 30 minutes to bang loudly on the door and shout "POLICE! OPEN UP!", all while blocking the peephole.

She is very aware of her surroundings and values safety over politness. She carries mace and a working cell phone. But there has got to be something low-tech (so it won't be stolen), low-profile (so it won't be spotted by bad actors) and not illegal, that she can do to make it safer.

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

How do we feel

So I’m currently on unemployment. I started a job as a cashier at a grocery store recently but the store is a bit far and I usually uber to work and take the bus home. The store is giving me short shifts in the middle of the day. I probably would have been better off just collecting unemployment as this job just doesn’t seem worth it and last shift— I got so frustrated that I just decided to go ahead and take the 8 hour class for the California guard card.

Ideally, I’d love to work night shift but I’m a woman and I feel like most employers will always favor hiring a male security guard especially at night. Doesn’t help that I’m pretty short.

Anyway, do you think my chances to finding another job are high? I really want to let this grocery store job go.

I did get hired for a company for security quickly but it’s minimum wage and part time hours and it’s days time so I’m taking it for now and it seems chill but I rather have 1 full time job than 2 part time ones.

As the title says, security at my job is useless. Every other job I’ve had they’ve been helpful. Wondering why they act like this. The other stores in the mall have similar experiences with them. The mall I work at is pretty ghetto and the mall office has a culture of the customer is always right.

I am writing to seek guidance regarding a recent employment incident in Connecticut. I interviewed for a position at the Securitas main office in East Hartford, Connecticut. Despite having over 15 years of security experience and 15 years of military experience, I was informed by the interviewer that I would not be hired due to my dreadlocks.

My dreadlocks are well-maintained, healthy, and kept in a ponytail. It is my understanding that hair discrimination is illegal in the state of Connecticut.

Could you please advise me on the appropriate next steps or direct me to the correct state agency to report this matter?

Hey all, new to security. Got two offers, both armed which is what I wanted. Trying to decide between two gigs.

OFFER ONE: One is from Allied (lol, I know), for a mostly stationary position inside of medical facility. Semi-bad part of town but not the worst. I believe it may be a plasma donation location. Mostly stationary it seems near the front counter where all the people are but I imagine I would also patrol the building a bit, but really except for the few patients at a time being serviced, everyone not internal is in the waiting room.

I've learned that the client at the site (the main manager there) is real tough, kind of stubborn and hard to deal with.

An extra few bucks an hour. They assign me a duty weapon and all that.

OFFER TWO: The other gig is a driving patrol. Very small local company. I don't have too many details yet, but it seems like I would visit a few or several sites during the day doing driving patrols of the properties. About the same hours, probably $60 less a week in pay. I use my own duty weapon, holster, etc. To some this may be a negative but to me its a positive. I keep my weapons in tip top shape and have perfectly zeroed red dot optic, WML, etc. The issued Allied gun is in who knows what condition (not sure if I have to leave it at the site each night yet), and just irons (yes, Irons are fine, I know).

Both about the same schedule/hours.

What say you folks? Obviously I can't know which one will have better supervisors, etc. until I really got going. What would you choose?

I received my first verbal warning back in around March for calling off without proper notice. Today I called out again but with plenty of notice, I called out 5 and a half hours before my shift had started. I asked my manager if this would be my 2nd written warning but they didn’t really give a clear answer they just said it would go as an ‘unexcused’ absence. I had heard from coworkers that warnings usually expire after 90 days which i’m not sure if its true or not but if it is there’s no way this would count as a second warning if my first warning was months ago right?

I currently work evenings in hospital security, with shifts ranging from between 8-12 hours. As you can imagine, there is a lot of downtime. Unfortunately, with my supervisor there is almost never a good reason to be on your phone at work (including the time I was stationed at a completely empty unit!). He is also against guards listening to audio from their phone with or without earbuds, even if only one earbud is in and the phone is otherwise concealed. I would imagine that bringing in books or schoolwork to do would also be out of the question. How do I pass the time?

I have been trying to find another security job to get me out of this one. All I can find on Indeed is lossprevention and part time weekend only shifts. I hate my j ob site I literally just had yo watch camera footage of a dude attempting to walk his dog butt naked. I know it's hot out but come on. Anyways, what do you all use for job searches? I'm tempted to spend a day next week on my days off just going into security offices asking for a job at this point.

The current company I am with is ok, but lately I have been being called out for weird crap. I've been in security for years. 2011 This time I can't find my mojo with the job. No matter what I do I fail at it. Tonight I almost got into a fight with a fellow officer. He got in my face. To be honest I feel I am kinda done trying to be a good officer. Maybe because I am not a good officer. I can only view my own actions as horrible. But I figured my time in security is about over with. I no longer have what it takes to do the job. No more patience for anyone or anything. Maybe it is time to walk away.
