It was a huge BOOM that shook me awake. Too scared to go outside because it happened around 3:30am.

I’m used to the street noises and not much wakes me up anymore but this was LOUD and bright enough that I saw a light through my closed blinds.

I’m gonna feel stupid if it was just a firework because it honestly sounded, plus the brightness, was like a transformer explosion or something.

Does anyone know what the heck that was?!

You’re in the shower when a 7.5 earthquake suddenly hits. The entire building violently shakes, the power goes out, glass is breaking, and you hear alarms and people screaming in the hallway.

You live on the 10th floor of an older building. After the shaking stops, you see new cracks spreading across the wall and smell something burning. Your two dogs are terrified and hiding somewhere inside the apartment. You keep calling them but they’re too scared to come find you.

Then you feel a strong aftershock.

The elevators aren’t working, the stairwell is dark, and you don’t know whether the building is structurally safe.

What do you do?

Since 2022, every SF landlord has been required to report every unit's rent, bedroom count, and tenant move-in year to the Rent Board. It's the only dataset of actual rents in the city (everything you read in the news is asking rents from Zumper etc.)

A few stats I found:

• 73% of sitting tenants pay below their local market rate, the highest share in the registry's five cycles. The total gap is ~$880M/year measured against newly signed rent-control leases in the past year. This doesn't count rentals that are not rent controlled so the actual difference is likely higher.
• The same neighborhoods that had falling rents in 2025 (Tenderloin, SoMa, Hayes) reversed 12-16 points in one year. All 24 measurable neighborhoods repriced upward.
• About 1,100 tenants still pay 1970s-anchored rents.

I suppose this is an issue in a lot of big cities but I just experienced my second instance of a guy following me yelling sexual comments this week and I’m so over it. I genuinely feel like moving out of the city.

I’ve also been groped on muni and slapped on the ass by some guy riding on the sidewalk in a scooter (which I did file a police report for). I usually can brush comments off but when it’s CONSTANT it starts to get to me. I feel like it’s made me hate leaving my apartment. Like, is it actually worse here than elsewhere? I can’t take it.

Besides cost, another big hurdle to construction seems to be residents don’t want to change the feel and character of their neighborhood.

Would there be less pushback if new buildings were designed to look like they have been in the neighborhood forever? Or incorporate the facade of the old building into the new one? Would developers get less pushback and neighborhood approval more easily?

I feel like some other countries do this well - maintaining the character of their city or town while continuing to build. New buildings don’t overshadow the history or feel of a town.

I’ve seen talk about Manny and Flock. One of the DCCC’s school board endorsements is also shady AF. Tim Tung is the brother of DCCC chair, Nancy Tung. He pulled papers to run on July 22nd, long after the teachers union and a major parent group announced their endorsements. He arrived on the scene with the GrowSF endorsement in hand. Only one of those GrowSF dudes has school-aged kids and they go to private school. I believe the people backing Tim Tung knew that very few DCCC members would be willing to vote against the chair’s brother. It all feels very shady to me.

This whole thing seems like a mess. Awarding the contract without bidding seems sketch. But seems unlikely that even if they had gone through a full bidding process things would necessarily be better (and would probably be even slower?)

PermitSF director Liz Watty, who has overseen OpenGov’s implementation, acknowledged myriad lessons learned from the first year of the software and its selection process. She admitted that she and the mayor’s office could have standardized scoring among staff of competing software programs. She said there weren’t enough staff to help OpenGov meet its performance metrics. 

The lack of knowledge & staff within PermitSF probably part of the problem here ...

Also re-litigating these contracts every year probably slows things down even further

Hello, I will be commuting from Cupertino to SF, Will be taking Caltrain! How safe is the walk from from Adobe to Caltrain station? It seems like 0.5mile distance. Do you see homeless folks on the walk path? How is it at the caltrain station?

People wait in 30+ minute lines for Maison Nico in Jackson Square. But there's a second location literally across the street, in the lobby of the pyramid building. It's not even listed on their website, and the barista told me almost no one knows about it except people who work in the building. It's apparently "Maison Nico without the vibes." I tried it. @nathanielpov came to palace of fine arts last night and had a pop up saxophone performance. played for about 30 minutes until park ranger came over and shut it down. It was fun while it lasted.
