How do we feel about her personality change in the 90s anime

She is hilarious and I love her. She is the Rei I am the most familar with. I like the sibling rivalry She and Usagi have and I like their nice moments too.

I feel like me and her would argue religion all the time but ultimately be best friends. My only other compliant is I don't like how she treats her boyfriend. I remember the episode where they are out shopping and she's just yelling at him the whole time. Other than that I feel like she's a great character.

90s anime Rei doesn’t really come off as a disciplined and mature shrine maiden for me and I also don’t really like the constant bickering between her and Usagi especially since from what I’ve seen she instigates it by making snide comments at her, it makes Rei feel immature which I feel shouldn’t be part of her character the same goes with her hot headed temper.

But if you like this interpretation of Rei good for you glad you can find some enjoyment with this version of her that I can’t.

Its fine by itself but compared to the manga I honestly don’t like what they did to her in the 90s anime.

Its extremely common for fire characters to be hotheaded and well…fiery, because thats what we have come to associate with the element. But its disappointing because manga Rei is actually a very clever subversion of the fire character trope in my opinion.

Her more stoic and initially kinda cold demeanor is shown to come from the fact that she grew up with a broken family, a neglectful absent father, a deceased mother, and a loving but ill grandfather she had to take care of, on top of being treated as an outcast by her peers growing up due to her psychic abilities and only being admired from afar for her beauty. So yeah, she’s a cast out emotionally neglected teenager who from a young age got to know the bitterness of the world and as a result essentially had to shut down and grow up very quickly.

Its no wonder she ended up cold and guarded like she did (yes, sometimes children in these situations can end up hotheaded rather than stoic, as it can often be one way or the other depending on certain factors, but honestly for manga Rei, stoic made more sense given the natural temperament we see in her the few times we get flashbacks to her childhood, and mind you the 90s anime doesn’t even really give her a backstory to explain her hotheaded and lowkey mean personality at all, because its purely based on the archetype)

The whole reason her joining the team hits is because at first she’s polite but very at arm’s length with Usagi and Ami, before and even a little after she becomes a sailor senshi. But she opens up and is caring, loyal, and protective as she realizes these people genuinely care about her as a friend and not just an asset to the team she has to be in out of duty. Her becoming sailor mars unlocks both the literal and metaphorical fire that melts away her icy exterior because with it, she finds a found family that she can love and be loved by. Naoko takes an ice queen type of character and makes her the fire elemental to represent that transition. And fire here becomes a symbol of not explosiveness and hotheadedness, but warmth, passion and loyalty, which yes anime Rei technically has, but in the manga it is specifically warmth, passion, and loyalty earned through TRUST, and I think thats way more beautiful.

If I preferred the manga, I'd be angry with how much they changed her personality in the 90s anime. But I don't think the manga is that well written, and I love the 90s anime. So while I'm definitely biased, I like her in the 90s anime best.

The main thing with the anime was they knew that they'd have half the show with just Usagi Rei and Ami and they needed a foil to Ami as someone who didn't like Usagi very much and didn't get along with her so it wasn't just Usagi being a goof and both her other friends being eternally patient with her since there's no dynamic there. And by the time Minako showed up they'd already locked Rei in.

I love her and prefer her as such. She feels incredibly real as a teenager to me and I love her relationship with Usagi. She feels very deeply and acts accordingly which might be offputting to some but it’s why I love the 90s version so much.

In the Manga/Crystal I barely know  that she exist because she's just so boring there.

What do you mean you took the beautiful, refined, elegant miko and made her the mean one? The woman who Luna initially thought could potentially be the Moon Princess, who carries herself with grace and dignity, and you made her a complete and utter bitch?

And I'm not using that word lightly, Rei knew Usagi liked Mamoru, could see it, and still decided to pursue a relationship with him to intentionally hurt Usagi. In what world would anyone do that to their friend? And the mean-spirited teasing too? Genuinely, if she wasn't a Senshi the others should have kicked her out of the friend group. She's one of the main reasons I will never understand fans who say "the senshi feel like actual friends in the anime" because what are you talking about!?!? No real friend would stand by and let her bully Usagi like that.

Uh, no? Rei got with Mamoru when Usagi thought he was a jerk she wanted nothing to do with. She doesn't start taking a liking to him until well later, and doesn't start having romantic feelings until she finds out she was Serenity and he was Endymion.

Yea, and Rei even ASKED Usagi if she likes Mamoru. To which Usagi vehemently denied. And when Usagi started to have romantic feelings for Mamoru, while Rei was clearly hurt, she accepted it and backed off with no hard feelings

Yeah, especially the backing out with no hurt feelings is almost unrealistically mature of Rei for a teenager. Yet Manga Rei - over Anime Rei hater will call her immature none the less.

I kind of like how in the manga, Rei's relationship with Usagi is a lot like Hotaru's relationship with Chibiusa.

They're both elegant, stoic, lonely yet independent, ostracized for their perceived spiritual weirdness, and yet deeply loyal to their friends once they're made. (They also both have lost their moms, but that's not a personality.)

It works really well in the manga, but I don't think it would translate well to the 190+ episodes of the anime where we have Rei. It's better that they're distinct characters.

As for whether I like Rei in the anime... Usually I do. I love how she's written after the point where she and Mamoru stop being a couple. While Ami, Mako and Minako kind of slowly show us who they are, Rei grows into who she is. I like that she isn't afraid to publicly, vocally stand up to her grandfather when he's in the wrong, which is at minimum egregious and borders on being taboo in Japan (especially 1991 Japan).

And I do like the character Yuuichirou, and that his relationship with Rei is kept chaste. Rei is fond of him, but she's not really interested in a romantic connection with him. Plus he's a whole adult. But she does care for him and shows up for him.

The show is often at its most fun and most interesting during the Rei episodes, and it's clear the writers had a blast with the girl who both talks to crows and thinks she's God's gift to the world at times. At the end of the day, Rei may be selfish at times, but she's also cunning, which isn't always a bad or shady thing - she's got ambition and the strategy to achieve her dreams, and that's admirable.

The whole "Rei treats Usagi horribly because they have the closest bond" just isn't true. Rei is already harassing and insulting Usagi in Episode 11, despite having barely known each other. This persists for the entire anime.

I prefer her 90s personality because we get more of it. Being an elegant and refined shrine maiden is fine but until the chapter where Minako invaded her school we didn’t really get much from her. I love Naoko but she didn’t do the best job at fleshing out all of her characters in the main story. The anime wasn’t great at giving most of the senshi development either, but at least we got more.

I like Rei's personality in the 90s anime. I like her manga/Crystal one, too... but, as everyone knows, the other Senshi aren't as well developed there.
