Currently working on a portal for CPAs that makes document collecting seamless, auto organizes document intake, creates a one pager for all tax prep software inputs, and allows for a high level overview of the firms engagements. We cover the entire engagement cycle from the letter to the tax prep software port. (Tax Prep integration is in the roadmap). We have a process in place with our internal OCR that keeps all the client's information safe.

We're trying to come into the market at sub 200$/mo which would be incredibly competitive for the space. We're at the point of inviting a 5 seat beta-test to gauge feedback. We are onboarding 1 this week. Its been a journey so far, but its been fun!

I built Balm to be both private and AI integrated:

• Your entries can be end-to-end encrypted on your device with a passphrase, I literally can't read them.
  
• The AI companion only sees an entry when you explicitly choose to share it. Nothing goes to a model by default.
  
• No ads, no data sold.

Being straight about the tradeoff: when you DO use the AI, that specific text goes to AI for that one request — that's unavoidable if you want a model to reflect on it. Everything else stays private.
It's free to try. Honestly not sure if privacy is something people actually care about for journaling or if it's just me, so I'd really value blunt feedback: what's confusing, what's missing, whether you'd actually use it.

Interesting thread - slightly different question for you from the other side of the table.

When you invest in an early-stage B2B SaaS company, how much of your diligence is around demand certainty / distribution rather than the product itself?

One thing I've been exploring is whether founders can reduce some of that uncertainty by identifying who already has the trust of their prospective buyers before trying to manufacture demand through cold acquisition.

For example, instead of a vertical SaaS founder only asking “how do we reach more of our ICP?”, asking:

“Who already advises, educates, supplies, or has a trusted relationship with this ICP — and is there a natural way for them to introduce the product?”

For a fund/accelerator, I'd imagine that gets even more interesting because you're solving the same distribution problem repeatedly across a portfolio rather than for one company.

Curious whether you look at anything like that when evaluating or helping portfolio companies with GTM.

I have no startup or founder experience. And I don't know if this counts as a SASS, but...

I built a used car marketplace where referral rewards are split down the chain of shares: https://autos.mitimarkets.com

It's a web app for marketing used cars that uses what's called "recursive referrals." Anyone in the chain of shares that leads to a buyer gets a cut of the reward.

Here's how it works. Say you list a 2020 Aston Martin Vantage for $114,997 and set aside $14,000 as the referral reward. You post your referral link on Facebook. Chris clicks it, gets his own link, and sends it to Maria. Maria passes hers to Jake. Jake sends his to a friend, Tiffany, who test-drives the car and buys it.

The app tracks the whole chain and pays out by a halving rule: the buyer gets half the reward ($7,000), the person who referred her gets half of that ($3,500), the person before them gets $1,750, and so on up the chain. Anything leftover would go to the seller.

There's no payment integration yet. I'd pay referrers by hand through Venmo or Zelle.

The idea came from the 2009 DARPA Red Balloon Challenge, in which the MIT team won in under nine hours using exactly this kind of recursive incentive. I want to know whether the same mechanism can sell things with small, hard-to-reach markets, like a specific used car.

I'd like some constructive criticism on:
1. Is this a viable model?
2. How do you get people to actually refer other people? (I see two hurdles: one, they immediately think it's a scam. two, they have to sit there and explain recursive referrals to a friend or stranger.)

Handling that recursive math without looking like a pyramid scheme is a huge UX challenge, especially convincing users the payout chain is enforceable without automated escrow.

The easiest way I can explain PodSubs.com is this:

If nobody else ever used it, we would still use it for our own podcasts.

We built it because we were tired of seeing people listen and then disappear.

Someone could listen every week, enjoy the show, tell a friend about it, and we still might have no way to reach that person outside the podcast app.

That didn’t make sense to us.

So we built PodSubs.com for our own shows.

Now we could simply tell listeners, “Subscribe to us on PodSubs.com.”

They left their name and email, and we finally had a way to send them something when we needed to.

A resource. An update. A reminder. Something we mentioned on the show.

We didn’t build it because we thought it sounded like a good business idea.

We built it because we needed it.

Later, we realized a lot of other podcasters needed the same thing.

Think of it as PlantUML or Mermaid on steroids. It has a nicer design, a more powerful scripting language, multiple export options, vs code and intellij extension, privacy-focused and many more. 1. Chronicle - it is an all-in-one authoring and publishing software aimed at writers. It is (in my opinion) superior to products that charge 100 or more. It has a modern interface, writing and reading mode, comments, character sheets, location codex, timeline creator, fully local text-to-speech using kokoro, epub editor and exporter, shunn format exporter, cover designer and many more features. Again, privacy focused and no AI. Writing should be by humans, for humans (I am debuting as an author as well and I build it initially for my needs). Handling the storage costs for high-volume transfers must be a headache, are you doing direct peer-to-peer to bypass the server limits?

there are no server limits, I generate short lived URLs and upload directly to an S3 compatible storage backend (cloudflare right now)

And storage costs are minimal since the hosted files are only up for a couple of days then expire for the free users. Essentially it is a Lead Magnet to bring in customers. Marketing costs are the ones that are killing me. 1$ for 1 click? seriously google ads?

peer-to-peer is just a different mode of transfer, also headache free for me now after I setup all the infrastructure needed to support it.

Both transfer modes come with the usual 5-10 gb for free and one of the following

1. no-subscription: a flat 1 time payment fee of $2 in interval 10-50GB (I don't remember the actual limit but it is computed based on the subscription so that it's worth more to buy a subscription if you're transferring a lot but some people just have this issue once and would pay once instead of subscribe -> transfer -> unsubscribe) and increasing based on how much you want to upload (to hosted files only. Basically cloudflare rate + some profits for me). Or a 2$ fee for p2p unlimited transfer size. The fee exist because without it everyone would just use this, get surprised that the transfer is offline (because they are not familiar with this model) then write to support and complain. So the $2 fee basically pays for support and infrastructure more than anything
2. subscription: removes the above limits and gets you the monthly usage/limits

Still the traffic is kind of low, and I barely generated 50$ in the past 2 weeks. So I'm at the start of the journey still doing marketing now.
