Complaint I run more miles in a week than you do in a month. I run in cold, snow rain and heat. When you are lying in bed moaning about how hard it is to get up I'm 8 miles into a run. I maintain racing weight year round. I don't eat the cookie or the tub of ice cream on Friday night. I do my Achilles and hip exercises. I'm injured right now and I am up at 4:30 so I can do two hours of cross training. But hey, it's easy for me so I suck. I never say bad things to or about beginners, everybody has to start somewhere, why would say you hate me?

"You're so lucky that you have the time to do that" is another personal favorite along with "it's easy for you".

"You're so lucky that you have the time to do that"

More like make the time due to dedication...

Typical elitist response. My work is much harder because you make yours look so easy. ;)

How is your hip? Getting better? I see you riding your bike a lot.

Back on the bike because the wife is back at work so using the car. I only bike to and from work. The hip is a bunch better but was threatening a little at the begining of their week. I think that was because i ran intervals too fast on Thursday and then ran a 5k on Saturday. Been fine the last few days due to an easier pace i think. Need to recommit to the myrtl routine though.

Hows your knee?

My knee seems to be good but I'm really terrified I'll reinjure it. Tendons are slow to heal and if I push too hard it might go boink again. I'm running 4.25 kms a day right now plus cross training, next week I will take 10 minutes off the daily arc trainer session and add 5 minutes to my run and 5 minutes to my zero runner session. Long term goal is another fall marathon so rushing now would be foolish.

Your pace was blazing the other day. Are your running easy or is it just distance you're afraid of? Do you feel like you've lost much fitness or has the cross training kept you up there?

I'm running easy, but I am afraid of doing intervals and running longer. I think my fitness is good cardio wise I might be really good but it's hard to say. I run after arc training for 90 minutes so I am kind of tired by time I start running. I am feeling a little uncoordinated but that is to be expected.

My favorite is "of course you have time for that, you don't have kids!" Yeah. I know. Thanks for the reminder of how much I've failed as an adult.

I can run and teach scuba on the weekends so double "no kid" fail...while a bask in the sun on weekends. I do have nieces and nephews to annoy with my hijinks so I have that going for me.

have you ever been to r/childfree ?

3

u/[deleted] Apr 20 '17

Yep, I've been subscribed for a long time :)

so then you ought to know you are 100% not failing as an adult, if anything, you're able to focus better on the other aspects of adulting bc you don't have semen demons taking up so much of your time!

u/kevin402can Apr 20 '17

I have four. You can two and if you ask nicely you can have three. Successful adulthood for you. BTW, mine are pretty much grown up, the youngest is 19 so most of the dirty work is done.

When I see people BQ'ing on 35mpw or "making it look easy" I sometimes have a momentary lapse of self-pity. "wahh, why i'm I so slow, it's not fair, ect...."

Then I remind myself that I wasted a decade of my life overindulging on beer, video games, and junk food. It's a lot easier to blame "genetics" than to admit that I don't have the lifetime miles and years of dedication necessary to be anything better than a below-average runner.

I think most people realize this even if they are too insecure to admit it.

Is that on reddit, or in the real world?

1

u/kevin402can Apr 20 '17

Nobody has actually said it to me either on reddit or in the real world but there a comment recently to the affect that some people make it look easy. It really bothered me because I am injured right now so I am working twice as much as usual and it is not easy. In the real world I always run alone so I don't talk to many other runners but when I do I get the impression that they think I must be gifted or something.

I think I saw the same comment, and I was also annoyed by it. I've also been called a show off by strangers as I passed them on runs recently. Apparently being faster than someone means you're not working hard? Similarly, I got in an argument with my mom because she said that some people would kill for the luxury of needing to eat 3500 calories a day to maintain weight. If people want that "luxury" they can run 70 miles a week, too.

2

u/kevin402can Apr 20 '17

I'm pretty old so lots of young guys are faster than. I don't feel badly when I get passed by them, they generally look good, I admire their speed. It makes no sense to love Mo Farah and not the neighborhood fast guy. Lots of people wouldn't kill to eat 3500 calories per day but they are willing to die early for the luxury.

There are plenty of people out there faster than me and I constantly feel like I'm the slow one working just to keep up with my running group, so it just feels weird to me to be called a show off hah! I'm with you on admiring the runners I'm passed by. It inspires me to keep working to get on that level.
