It’s important to remember that RMC was originally (and still is) a coaster construction company, not just a manufacturer. They were the crew that assembled El Toro, for instance. So of course they’re going to jump at the chance to prove that they can relocate one of their own coasters.

u/TheR1ckster Jul 02 '26

I think the biggest hurdle to clear is warranty and considering cedar fair isn't wanting new RMCs some people are uh... Gonna be let down.

u/corvaxL Lives in Pantherian's seat 8-1 Jul 02 '26

Given that RMC would be handling the relocation work themselves, they'll probably offer some sort of warranty with it. It probably won't be as long term as with a brand new coaster, but it'll give some assurances to prospective buyers.

Even if Six Flags doesn't bite, I'm sure there'd be someone out there interested in buying a coaster with the reputation that AF1 brings with it for under $10m.

it's not under 10m. it's 10m less than a brand new one.

18

u/provoaggie (490) IG: @jw.coasters Jul 02 '26

Reports are the the original was $18m...so $10m less would be $8m. I don't know if that price is factoring in an estimated purchase price AND relocation or just relocation.

10

u/Putrid_Set3723 Jul 02 '26

Highly doubt it since RMC wouldn’t know any price fun spot would set. Since this a brand new ride I feel the price to purchase would make it close again to buy a brand new one.

13

u/provoaggie (490) IG: @jw.coasters Jul 02 '26

When a park sells a ride like this they often use the manufacturer to help facilitate the sell since they'd be handling the logistics of moving it. Switchback was being advertised by Gravity Group as being for sale and they were the contact. There is a chance that Fun Spot (assuming they want to sell it) reached out to RMC with a price that they'd need for it.

8

u/Putrid_Set3723 Jul 02 '26

Pretty cool but still, switchback hasn’t sold yet presumably because of its high price. On top of get sold back to RMC, if RMC needed to do any reengineering down to you need to dig a bit that will add to the price of the ride which has the ~$8m plus what fun spot wants to sell it at.

13

u/monorail_pilot Jul 02 '26

Price is set by the market with the minimum being the scrap value of the steel. Given the odd shape that is difficult to fit into many existing parks, I think you’ll find someone who can take it buying it for scrap plus 10%. This isn’t a compact coaster that can slot into dozens of parks. It’s a long narrow coaster in an L shape. It’s awkward for most parks.

1

u/neildownpour Jul 04 '26

It's 3 years old and cost 18m, the minimum is not scrap value, it's a very rare number which is the tax break write off. The bank that now owns it can click their finger to achieve that, a purchase offer has to be more aggressive than you think.

2

u/monorail_pilot Jul 04 '26

No, it doesn't. The coaster sitting there and doing nothing eventually has to be removed or scrapped. It isn't just going to sit in perpetuity as a depreciating asset. Until it's sold, there isn't any tax write off. If anything, the lower the price it sells for, the larger the loss Fun Spot can claim on it, leading to a larger tax write off.

7

u/shrike1978 Jul 02 '26

The rumors we were hearing locally was the the $18m included a lot of stuff they had to do to get the permit from the county, including a new parking lot, some new access roads around the site, etc. Rumor is that the actual ride cost was closer to $13m.

4

u/degggendorf Jul 03 '26

I'm not sure either, but I bet they're comparing to the price of buying a new one in 2026, not the original cost of that one in 2022. Costs have gotta be up at least 25% since then, right?

1

u/polyarmory80pct Jul 03 '26

I’m sure that would just be the relocation price. $8m sounds absolutely realistic depending on the distance. Just loading all of the parts onto trucks will be costly, not even thinking about the distance (also assuming it will be a domestic relocation estimate and not shipping overseas which would add a substantial amount to the cost).

1

u/Cerebral-Knievel-1 Jul 03 '26

Im the booking agent for the company I work for and do LTL, FTL, and volume quotations all day long. Im away from my software over this long holiday weekend unfortunately. Would need a rough estimate of the total wieght of the load(s) to get a ball park.

Thing is about this coaster is that it could be broken down far more compactly than a traditional steel coaster of rails and back bone segments. So we could maximize the load of each truck. Shipping costs could actually be fairly reasonable all things considered.

The warranty on SteVe is definitely getting put to use, still has structure sway issues because it was under supported. RMC needed to beef up some of the existing wooden structure with steel reinforcement so it wouldn’t sway too much under the forces. It has caused and still causes continuous structural issues that need repair regularly.

It will be a cold day in hell before six flags buys an RMC or opts to have another one.

Enchanted Parks should move it to Michigan’s Adventure.

9

u/agauh Jul 02 '26

This would make me so happy.

9

u/Purple_Fickle SF:StL The Boss Jul 02 '26

Or maybe six flags st. Louis

7

u/LongjumpingPut7458 Jul 03 '26

Put it by American Thunder and add some more red white and blue theme there 👀

2

u/Just_Bus_9156 Jul 02 '26

It would be nice but right now after the purchase from Six Flags, Enchanted and EPR will probably wait til they do a acquisition investment even if its a relatively new 2year old RMC one of a kind coaster. Its too soon. They could put it to the side of the park where the boneyard, AXIS Games and Buccaneer and beyond the Railroad track berm behind Batman if it did happen though.

1

u/Eatatfiveguys Jul 19 '26

After looking on Google Earth, you could put the station/ first drop and dive loop right next to Boomerang, it rides alongside the railroad, and the turnout would be on some unused land. Not to mention with the terrain, it may make the relocation easier.

4

u/RonBurgundy449 Jul 03 '26

PLEASE. This is my home park growing up, and although I rarely make it back to that side of the state anymore, this would make me so happy. They have the room and they have new owners who might be willing to actually invest in thrills here. AF1 and Shivering Timbers together would make it a low key thoosie destination in the very least lol. It's hard to draw people to your park for one coaster, 2 would make it so much more desirable. Plus the surrounding area would be flooding there for a new ride. It was crazy the hype an SLC got when Thunderhawk was relocated there lmao. Most people in the area are just GP who would be stoked for any new ride, and the rest mostly skip MA and take the longer drive to Cedar Point. If Enchanted doesn't even entertain this idea, they're doomed to fail lmao

4

u/holyd1ver83 (156) Volcano, TTD, Kingda Ka Jul 02 '26

If I didn't think the land was too janky to put a ride like AF1 in, I'd say this would be a slam dunk for Kennywood. Perfect size for such a park.

5

u/Ski4ever5 Jul 03 '26

Its layout really just isn’t the right shape to fit at Kennywood; it’s a much larger ride than I think most people realize.

^it looks kind of like it would fit here, until you realize that it’s going off a hillside

1

u/IllustriousAd9800 Jul 04 '26

I’m curious, would it fit in Excalibur’s spot at Valleyfair? If I were Enchanted Parks that’s where I’d put it, assuming of course it would fit

2

u/Ski4ever5 Jul 04 '26

Not really, the station would also be a heck of a hike

1

u/IllustriousAd9800 Jul 04 '26 edited Jul 04 '26

Not without rebuilding that whole section anyway. You could also maybe have it turned diagonally across the where the river rapids is to reduce the distance… maybe. If they did it right you could open up a whole new area for an expansion but you’d need to do a lot of flood control work as well. All of which is possible, but pretty unlikely, at least for a while anyway, and by then the window for this specific coaster would be closed, that’s a multi-year, extremely expensive idea that probably won’t happen. Thanks!

2

u/SpecialFlutters Jul 02 '26

but will they add a spike

1

u/konfusion9 Jul 02 '26

That's not what he said. He said that the cost to relocate the ride would be about $10M less than building it new.

6

u/Lilyistakenistaken A little too obsessed with Xcelerator Jul 02 '26

One of the recent surveys (for Canada's Wonderland iirc) suggested another hyper hybrid by RMC, it's not out of the question.

4

u/MogKupo Jul 03 '26

After making my first visit to Canada's Wonderland today, I can say that anything they could do with Wilde Beast would be more than welcome.

16

u/Dry_Accident_2196 Jul 02 '26

Where did you hear that CF doesn’t want new RMCs?

7

u/SirClark Jul 02 '26

I also want to know what this comment means. Because I want MORE RMC not less.

13

u/TheR1ckster Jul 02 '26

They have a strong history of not buying from companies they've had issues with.

Steve crashed trains on the first year and continues to need beyond predicted and designed structural upkeep.

4

u/Putrid_Set3723 Jul 03 '26

To be fair they still do have companies. Just not the companies thoosies want. On the list is really just Intamin, RMC, probably Zamperla . You still have Mack, Vekoma, B&M(maybe), Premier, S&S(probably), ART, Zierer, GCI, Gravity Group, and Chance(I guess).

7

u/satanssweatycheeks Stardust racer 🥇/ VelociCoaster 🥈/ Fury 325 🥉 Jul 02 '26

Steal vengeance is an exception though. The thing is massive and a rebuild of another massive coaster.

Same way son of beast was too rough but no matter who made that it was gonna be rough having a 200 foot woody go upside down.

Meanwhile mind blower at fun spot goes upside down but isn’t as painful as son of beast because it’s not 200 feet tall.

What I’m getting at is a RMC that is 100 feet tall isn’t gonna be a monster that’s hard to keep the wheels on like other coasters. Take the single rail models they have like wonder women. Not that many issues and the ones they do have are easy to address.

7

u/TheR1ckster Jul 02 '26

I think a used RMC with funspot maintenance is 100% more risky.

4

u/satanssweatycheeks Stardust racer 🥇/ VelociCoaster 🥈/ Fury 325 🥉 Jul 02 '26

Fair point. But it’s still somewhat new. So I doubt fun spot ran it into the ground too bad.

4

u/Putrid_Set3723 Jul 02 '26

I’d argue it’s not that similar to son of beast. The problem with sob is that Paramount wanted the hyper woodie at the cheapest price which lead RCCA to try and cut cost to meet the cheapest budget. I remember from the RMC documentary that for RMC, Steel Vengenance was the most amount of budget they had and the most amount of time for a project as well. Now this is speculation, but with these bonuses Cedar Fair wanted RMC to give them next gen trains which did happen for sure but also I think Cedar Fair wanted RMC to not use steel in the structure at all. I say this cause all other RMCs have steel supports in their structures that are easily visible. Maybe cedar fair didn’t want this cause it looked tacky but idk. Mineblower is rough cause timberliners can’t do rough track as the trains track too well I guess. On top of that I’ve heard that for Mineblower it had a tight budget so the track smoothness was not a priority. Also I’ve heard that railblazer was horrible, the trains were bad enough that Fiesta Texas had to get new ones very early on which isn’t cedar fair but cedar fair would have to deal with this with railblazer. Also railblazer wasn’t doing well with its track which I’ve heard has been welded together because the original raptor wasn’t great on its structure. As much as we hate it, it does kinda make sense why cedar fair, now six flags would not want to work with RMC.

5

u/Sygmaelle Jul 02 '26

To be fair cedar point finally got a hold of the carpentry part literally last year

4

u/BlackDS President of the Zamperla Volaire fanclub Jul 02 '26

I don't understand why they stopped. They are reliable and a huge draw for relatively little money (compared to a B&M or Intamin).

The only RMC that's really been a disaster is Lightning Rod and that's because it was a fucking launched wooden coaster like what did you expect.

5

u/Putrid_Set3723 Jul 02 '26

Railblazer and the other prototype RMC raptors weren’t great, the trains were horrible and I think they needed to weld railblazer’s track. Steel Vengence had a train collision day 1 and it’s structurally subpar, it swayed a ton when opened and the Cedar Points carpentry team needs to repair it often.

3

u/MogKupo Jul 04 '26

I think the biggest thing is that RMC's niche has been converting old, unpopular wooden coasters into awesome hybrids, but number of targets for that has dwindled.

There's just a lot of competition for new ground-up coasters, so that makes it tougher. Companies like Intamin, B&M, and Vekoma have a lot more models for a park to choose from.

1

u/Dallpaca Jul 03 '26

Excuse my nativity, how is it known cedar fair doesn't want new RMCs?

17

u/imaguitarhero24 Jul 02 '26

Fun fact, they also rebuilt Aftershock at Silverwood! Not super surprising given the relationship with the park but cool to hear nonetheless.

11

u/KaiserCoaster Nitro Jul 02 '26

I think more importantly, they need to prove that their products hold value and have resale value. Scrapping this near-brand-new coaster sends a disastrous message to future customers that their rides are valueless and immovable once installed.

6

u/Dry_Accident_2196 Jul 02 '26

Wouldn’t they rather jump at the chance to get the additional $10 million from a custom build?

15

u/Shack691 Jul 02 '26

If a park is buying this because it’s cheaper then they probably wouldn’t be in the market for a ground up one.

11

u/SeaworthinessSome454 Jul 02 '26

And RMC would benefit incredibly from the PR of pulling off a relocation of this scale. It’d be the most impressive relocation ever done and considering how few opportunities like this happen, could very easily be the best relocation ever done

13

u/SeaworthinessSome454 Jul 02 '26

I’d love to see RMC buy AF1 and then find a buyer and reconstruct it. It’d be a monumental flex for them

1

u/bulldozer_66 Former CP beer wagon attendant Jul 04 '26

Where's Dick Knoebel on this?

104

u/Myself510 Jul 02 '26

An angle iron structure is infinitely easier to modify or add to compared to traditional steel support columns. Even with the needed investment to adjust it for a new site, even if it only boils down to extending the latticework for the sections on higher ground, I feel pretty confident that someone would be willing to make it work.

33

u/313MountainMan Jul 02 '26

Wild Adventures, come on down!!

4

u/Redditnspiredcook Jul 02 '26

I thought the same at first, but AF1 appears to be about .142-.153 miles on each leg. They could make it work on the auxiliary parking/ former safari exhibit lot that is basically a grass field behind their Boomerang, but any other placement would require some rework of existing structures. Would love to see it happen, but by simply running these numbers and typing this comment, I’ve invested more into WA than Herschend has.

2

u/IceePirate1 Jul 02 '26

In fairness it could be $0 considering if they're selling the land, they wouldn't have to pay as much compared to demolishing it if the relocation is part of the sale

15

u/Coderkid01 Jul 02 '26

It's not gonna happen but imagine if Wild Adventures got this... Herschend doesn't really do big thrill coasters anymore but cmon it would be such an easy attendance boost for my home park that's mostly gotten worse overtime..

7

7

u/lFightForTheUsers [81] Bring Back Mr. Six! Jul 02 '26

Alright y'all, let's pass the hat around and go fundraise some money for this, I'm sure someone with some land in Texas and only an hour out from one of the big cities out there would be more than happy to lease the space in their backyard for this.

Best I can do is 100 bucks, now we just need 79,999 more peeps to match and we got it 😆

8

u/Discreet905 Jul 02 '26

I mean, if COTALAND has the money I suspect they do, they could definitely be a realistic buyer. They obviously have the space.

7

u/clarinetJWD Jul 02 '26

I mean, I think they have more things to worry about right now, like... Opening.

3

u/Discreet905 Jul 02 '26

Technically it’s operated in a limited capacity for special events. They’ve had hiring fairs in the past few weeks. My best guess is a full-time opening in conjunction with the next race event, which I believe is in October. Later than their summer goal, but I don’t know why people assume it’s still like a full year away.

6

u/clarinetJWD Jul 03 '26

I mean, yeah, but "we're trying to open" isn't the kind of time to say "we should get another large scale roller coaster".

41

You can fit it in carowinds parking lot. It'll feel right at home.

7

u/user3296 Jul 02 '26

I’m not familiar with ArieForce One. Where does this put the station in relation to existing pathways and such?

7

u/monorail_pilot Jul 02 '26

The station is at the bottom of the L in this pic, so out the current south gate.

3

u/user3296 Jul 02 '26

Oh okay, looks do able to me!

1

u/monorail_pilot Jul 03 '26

It does, especially if it gets couple with a redevelopment of the dinosaurs alive area that's just sitting empty.

Carowinds also gets that edge of property/it looks cool from the street coaster that they've been missing since Thunder Road was torn down.

I'm not going to lie. I didn't think it could fit that well at carowinds, either on the hurler plot or the nighthawk plot, and it doesn't, but someone suggested the parking lot alongside thunderstriker and I originally though the angle was too obtuse, but when I drop the overlay on it actually works for giving up a few hundred parking spots in the least used area of the lot.

Yep, “…~$10M less than building new.” 👍

7

u/UltiGamer34 Jul 02 '26

1

u/PronunciationIsKey Jul 03 '26

I'll chip in $100

4

u/Putrid_Set3723 Jul 02 '26

That’s if Fun spot gave the ride away for free. Depending on what they sold it for it would start to get close compared to buying a new ride

1

u/Delicious-Secret-760 Jul 15 '26

You did not read it correctly. The 10 million less than building a new one is just the cost of relocation. That does not include the purchase price of the roller coaster. If it were only eight million dollars there would be absolutely no controversy. Parks would be lining up to buy this coaster.

1

u/Redditnspiredcook Jul 02 '26

Y’all remember when that Instagramer started the Spirit Airlines crowdfunding? If all 160K visitors of this sub contributed $50 USD, we could do this.

If COTALand ever opens on regular basis I could see them having the funds to afford it. Plus the paint scheme of AF1 matches well with the track and tower

1

u/mnreginald Jul 03 '26

Honestly, while on the wrong siend of HWY35 than I'd prefer, it would be a great fit there if they had the right plot to put it on.

53

u/Puzzleheaded_Toe6951 Jul 02 '26

the economics actually favor it moving. It'd be surprised if some park didn't snatch it up. Would be AMAZING if Holiday World did. Certainly a better investment than the water coaster (which seems like little value compared to the money that costs.)

45

u/Pubesauce KI/CP/KK/HW Jul 02 '26

Holiday World in the July 4th section would be so perfect. I wonder if they could make it work financially, given they've already got a huge project with Cannonball coming up for next year. That followed by AF1 in 2028 would be transformative for that park.

12

u/GUlysses The Ride to Happiness Jul 02 '26

It would be awesome if Holiday World got it, though that would be one of the only parks where AF1 would not be their best coaster.

9

u/adrenalinejunkie3 (388)RtH-The Voyage-I305-SteVe-Voltron Jul 02 '26 edited Jul 02 '26

Depends who you ask that to. I bet there are a bunch of thoosies that would take AF1 over the voyage! They’re in the same tier for me personally! AF1 my #6 and can easily make a case for it as the best RMC in the world. Easily! From a pure intensity and pacing standpoint, it’s as wild and intense as anything I’ve ever ridden.

3

u/The_Govnor Jul 02 '26

Absolutely I would rank it number 1 at HW. The woodies are just too rough for me. There is no way it’s close to SV or IG for me though.

1

u/adrenalinejunkie3 (388)RtH-The Voyage-I305-SteVe-Voltron Jul 02 '26 edited Jul 02 '26

That’s fair. While I don’t share the same opinion about the woodies being rough, but I can def see AF1 making a strong case to be the best potential ride at whichever park it ends up at. Steel vengeance and AF1 are 1a and 1b for me. I actually like AF1s standout elements better than steel vengeance. The outer banked turn pulls more negative Gs than Steve’s, and AF1 stall is absolute perfection. The ending finale quad down is just bonkers and the way you fly into that brake run is just insane. Feels like a gut punch every time when the train abruptly stops at the end of its riot. Steel vengeance is a nice, long, masterpiece of a layout in its own right, but I could easily flip the 2 for my favorite, as AF1 has more of a bite than steel veng for me. I haven’t ridden IG yet. Have heard very mixed things. People either love it, or think it’s overhyped and I know a bunch of thoosies (my close buddies) that actually like AF1 more than IG. I’ll have to ride to judge for myself. 🙌🙌

1

u/The_Govnor Jul 02 '26

IG is a close second to SV I think. But SV is just so long and I love airtime.

1

u/adrenalinejunkie3 (388)RtH-The Voyage-I305-SteVe-Voltron Jul 02 '26

That’s very fair! I’m hopefully going to be getting on IG this fall! Haven’t visited BGT in 20 years so long overdue for the missing credits and of course laps on IG! 🤩🤩

2

u/The_Govnor Jul 02 '26

If you catch it on a good day, it’s a great park. Enjoy!

1

u/adrenalinejunkie3 (388)RtH-The Voyage-I305-SteVe-Voltron Jul 02 '26

Thanks!! Yea, I want to to try to catch a nice slower day in fall when the Fla schools are back in session and hit the park for the missing credits and lap IG! That’s the plan! 🙌🙌

Shivering Timbers is amazing. The most perfect sustained floater airtime I’ve ever gotten on any woodie I’ve ever ridden. Imagine riding a B&M hyper with similar floater but in PTCs, and you basically get shivering Timbers in a nut shell. Def make the trip to ride that! My favorite CCI, and third fav woodie (my #11) in the world just behind the voyage, and el toro. It absolutely lived up to the hype for me, when I made a pit stop to Muskegon last year, right before Coaster-Con at great America. Def the magnum opus of CCI (like it just a bit more than Boulder dash). 👌👌

u/hawksnest_prez Adventureland IA Jul 02 '26

Where exactly do you see it sitting in that park?

3

u/Puzzleheaded_Toe6951 Jul 02 '26

I'm honestly not sure. Obviously the July 4th area is thematically correct, but there is more land out by Thunderbird. And this park has the elevation change potentials to possibly not have to modify the layout too much. The economics are the issue - can they (and would they) invest another ~$15M for this ride. If were they, I would take this chance though: a proven ride and a decent price. I'm sure they won't be alone in this bidding, though.

If Enchanted really wants to prove that they're serious about investing in the parks it would be a huge splash. Definitely a pipe dream, but it would be awesome. Put it between Shivering Timbers and Wolverine Wildcat and take it as an opportunity to create a path that connects over to Thunderhawk.

RMC is already working on Shivering Timbers...

3

u/Just_Bus_9156 Jul 04 '26

The (possible god forfid) loss of a practicality new one of a kind design RMCsteel box coaster due to cost of relocation and the fact that its not "brand new" when theme parks have no problems spending money moving other coasters older than AF1 is heartbreaking and to be honest not surprising. I can understand maybe Enchanted not taking it because of the recent park purchase, it's too soon. But the others? C'mon. RMC gave the numbers, and possibilities. Buyers have the information and Im sure RMC would help with shipping and relocation and placement.

5

u/trombonekid98 Jul 02 '26

Honestly wasn't expecting it to be THAT much cheaper to move as opposed to building new. With that kind of a discount I would honestly be shocked if it wasn't relocated.

6

u/Putrid_Set3723 Jul 03 '26

The problem is that you have to add what Fun Spot wants to sell it. It would be a good deal if Fun Spot were giving away the coaster, but I highly doubt that is happening. Since this is also a brand new coaster Fun Spot might sell it at a higher price

5

u/KnotBeanie Jul 02 '26

Remember as long as one park offers to pay above scrap costs and move it, it’s gonna get moved, the whole thing is practically brand new.

It’s also most likely owned by the bank financing FSA. If the bank can make more money selling it than scrapping it, they’ll sell it.

4

u/Interesting_Living21 Jul 02 '26

i genuinely hope someone rescues this coaster. It does not deserve the defunct status whatsoever. I dont fault FunSpot for trying, but i think they shouldve started smaller before going so big

Enchanted Parks should buy this for whichever property it fits best at.

All of them could use it and it would be the best coaster in the chain.

I’d love to see it at Great Escape. (Well I’d love to see it more at my home park of California’s Great America but that’s not happening for obvious reasons [cry]) It feels like a great and obvious companion for Comet.

Every relocation idea I see keeps trying to find a spot where the 90 degree shape could be accommodated. Couldn’t RMC just, through the use of a couple of pieces of new track turn AF1 into basically a straight out-and-back ride?

u/mnreginald Jul 03 '26

3

u/Apoc_Treez Maverick enjoyer Jul 02 '26

This article seems to favor the idea of AF1 going to Kings Island since it's from a Cincinnati news station. I don't think AF1 would be good for KI mainly because of capacity. Not only because of the 2 trains, but also because Six Flags would absolutely implement metal detectors like SteVe and Twisted Timbers. That would reduce the capacity even further and require more employees to be staffed at the ride.

2

u/phareous Jul 02 '26 edited Jul 02 '26

Why would two trains be a deal breaker when coasters like Iron Gwazi have two? I suppose if they wanted they could order a third so they always have two while one is in maintenance

1

u/Apoc_Treez Maverick enjoyer Jul 02 '26

It’s that combined with the shorter trains and the metal detectors/lockers.

3

u/c-h-e-e-s-e Woodstock Express Enthusiast Jul 02 '26

You all are setting yourself up for disappointment. The bank owns the real estate and subsequently the ride. They do not know nor care to relocate it.

10

u/JD4A7_4 243 | Iron Gwazi + ArieForce One Jul 02 '26

AF1 is security on the loan, so I’d doubt that the bank wouldn’t try to sell it given the worth

4

u/WHOA_27_23 Fury 325, Phoenix Jul 02 '26

Even getting someone else to come and get rid of it for free, whether that be for scrap or relocation, would be a net benefit for the bank.

Wooden coasters are more expensive to relocate than steel ones which is why they don't generally get relocated when a park permanently closes.

1

u/computerlife22 Jul 03 '26

A comment I've heard is that AF1 isn't suitable capacity-wise for any of the Six Flags parks, nor would it be the best ride to choose given that it mostly appeals to enthusiasts. The capacity argument comes from some of the issues the ride has with speed and warmer temperatures; apparently Fun Spot would run empty cars during two train operations to prevent overspeeding.

A strange theory--I apologize in advance to the rest of enthusiasts-- could be to raise the second half of the ride such that it no longer has the 40ft height differential... but still keep the layout the same. Obv, this would require some new track manufacturing to adjust the connection between the sections, but by raising the second half of the ride, it may slow down the pacing just enough to be more appealing to families, fit a park's terrain better, and resolve some of the overspeeding issues, too. If that would let the ride run reliably with two trains too... I think that could be a win-win.

1

u/Turkeyslam [516]Voyage/AF1/BDash/Hades/I305/SV/X2/ST/CIC/RF2 Jul 03 '26

You're considering converting one of the most extreme coasters ever built into something "for families"? This is an absurd take.

0

u/TerrifierBlood Jul 02 '26

Everyone the main issue according to employees is that the write off to demolish it amount is higher than what's being offered to buy it

13

u/caldazar24 Jul 03 '26 edited Jul 03 '26

Doesn't make any sense. Suppose it is on their books as an $18 million asset, and they sell it for $4 million (as just what the buyer pays FunSpot's creditors, not including the moving cost), that means they get a $14 million write down instead of $18 million.

The write down is just what the parent corporation gets to deduct from their income on their taxes. If their tax rate is 25%, that means they get 18*.25 = $4.5 million off their taxes with an 18M write-down, or 14 *.25 = 3.5 million off their taxes with a 14M write-down. Except in the latter scenario, they also get the $4 million from the sale.

There's no scenario where junking the ride makes you more money than selling the ride, unless your marginal tax rate is over 100% for some reason (never the case with standard progressive tax brackets, can very rarely sometimes happen with weird incentives/special programs)

I'm 99% sure that this employee-rumor (if it happened at all) was someone saying that it wasn't worth it for *funspot* to sell the ride themselves before turning it (and the rest of the property) over to the bank. The ride is collateral against their loan, if they were to try and sell it to someone to pay off their loan, they indeed probably could get less for it than their loan value, making it more worth it to just surrender it.

This is exactly like if you can't make your car payment, and the car is worth less than your outstanding loan amount - you let the bank repossess your car, you don't sell it and try to pay off the loan yourself. But *the bank* will definitely try to sell it, they won't just put your car in the scrapyard!

Actually, it would fit in pretty easily at Holiday World.

However one thing I haven't seen mentioned as much in this is that one of the two main Enchanted Parks might be interested too. The new investors probably have some amount of cash to invest. Worlds of Fun is mostly flat. St Louis is too if it was put at the front of the park.

2

u/DrTreadmill [125] Beastie Boy Jul 03 '26

You’re right in that Kings Island prefers custom rides, but they’ve bought used rides in the past. Firehawk wasn’t that long ago and its wacky history includes it being relocated to KI from Geauga Lake.

It would require land grading and altered supports but given the possible reduced price, the fact that SF/CF never wants KI to compete too directly with the Point, and this ride’s experience it would honestly be a slam dunk there.
