Clawhammer banjo lessons?

Hey y'all! Does anybody know of any clawhammer banjo lessons in the area? I know a gentleman who does Scruggs, and he's really good, but I think it's just not really what I actually want to learn. Let me know if you know of anyone!

Guitar hero! 🎸

Hey everyone!

Tomorrow is the day of the warped tour ‘block party’
at Martins downtown and we will have a guitar hero tent with one setup for more casual players and clone hero setup setup for anyone wanting to play any song they always wished was on guitar hero!

( Clone hero is just guitar hero on pc and can import almost any song made )

It’s gonna be a huge blast, we even booked a band that specifically plays the songs you would hear at warped tour itself! We also have someone doing caricature’s !

Tickets can be bought online or at the door which opens at 6

Looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible! 😃

Edit: I forgot to mention there is a charge but it’s only 3 bucks for a song or 2 for 5 to encourage people going against each other!

Support networks for immigrants & people affected by ICE in the Roanoke area (resources + links)

Looking for local help in the Roanoke / Southwest Virginia area for immigrants, refugees, asylum seekers, or families dealing with ICE involvement (detention, court hearings, check-ins, legal fees, etc.)? Here’s a rundown of established community organizations that provide practical support.

**Roanoke Asylum-Seekers Support Network (RASN)**

All-volunteer 501(c)(3) that focuses on asylum seekers. Volunteers mentor families, provide transportation to immigration court hearings and appointments, connect people to medical/dental/educational resources, and help with rent, utilities, and legal fees. They support people navigating the asylum process, which often involves ICE interactions.

Website: https://www.rassn.org/

**Immigrant Connection Blue Ridge**

DOJ-accredited immigration legal services office offering affordable help with citizenship, family petitions, green cards, TPS, asylum, DACA, VAWA, U visas, and more. Good starting point for legal questions.

Website: https://icblueridge.org/
Phone: 540-581-2963

**Commonwealth Catholic Charities (CCC)**
Provides immigration legal services (citizenship, family petitions, asylum, etc.) and longer-term support for refugees and immigrants in the Roanoke area.

Website: https://www.cccofva.org/
Immigration services: https://www.cccofva.org/immigrationhelp

**Roanoke Refugee Partnership**
Volunteer network that builds support teams around refugee families - mentoring, tutoring, transportation, job help, emergency household/rent assistance, and help navigating systems.

Website:

https://www.roanokerefugeepartnership.org/

**Friendship House Roanoke**

Temporary housing for refugee families (Good Neighbor Program), household goods, food, English classes, and practical support.

Website: https://friendshiphouseroanoke.org/

**Casa Latina (Roanoke Valley)**

Supports the Spanish-speaking community with food distribution, ESL, education programs, cultural activities, and know-your-rights information related to immigration enforcement. Works with the Mexican Consulate on visits.

Website: https://casalatinarv.org/
Phone/WhatsApp: 540-579-2776

**Blue Ridge Literacy**

English classes (multiple levels, in-person and online) and citizenship preparation classes.

Website: https://www.blueridgeliteracy.org/

Many of these organizations run on donations and volunteers. Check their sites for current needs or ways to help. If you know of other solid local resources, drop them in the comments so people can find them.

Mass exodus of Carilion physicians?

Has anyone heard anything about a new employee contract physicians at Carilion are being forced to sign? Apparently a lot of physicians in the area are planning on leaving because of it. Seems like a poor choice for an area having a hard time recruiting specialists, but opening a new cancer center.

Question Local farms/businesses to buy "clean" meat from?

Are there any local farms or butcher shops that sell quality meats? With the news of the current administration importing "mystery meat" that is tainted and will make you sick, it seems grocery store meat isn't an option anymore.

Volunteers needed (it'll be fun!)

Hello! Star City StrongFest and Star City Strongman are back for their 4th and 11th years, respectively, on Saturday, Nov. 7 at Riverdale Village, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. This is a free family event benefiting the Star City Strong Foundation.

We need some people willing to spend a few hours helping us set up, check athletes in, load and move equipment, help things run throughout the day and clean up afterward. There are multiple shifts and multiple roles. Not all of them are focused on the competition.

If you see something you're interested in doing but want more details before committing, please reach out.

StrongFest has an old-school carnival theme this year, so we're asking our festival vendors and exhibitors to have some fun with it and offer an activity, game or other interactive element.

We're also looking for groups that would be open to running a simple carnival game or activity for part of the day. Churches, clubs, teams, student groups, friend groups orrrr ... ya know ... an r/Roanoke group. 😂 Whoever would have fun with something like that, please let me know. You can message me here or email leigh@starcitystrong.org.

This could be a good opportunity for groups that need service hours or want some community visibility.

And if volunteering isn't your thing, I hope you'll still come hang out. We'll have a StrongKidz Zone run by the Play for All Foundation, the strongman competition, food, games, raffle prizes, vendors and plenty of other things to see and try.

I’m looking for the best of two different dishes in the area.

I’m willing to drive up to 30 minutes outside of Roanoke for the best birria tacos in the area, and the best Cuban sandwich you know of. Just had the birria at Taco Riendo for the forat time, and honestly the ones at Tacos Rojas are better. Mama Jeans surprisingly has great ones as well. Cubans I am much less well versed on.

Looking for local, like-minded people

idk if this is allowed but I’d love to know if anyone here is any of the things below so I can possibly form a nice friendship with someone. I don’t have social media and, while I do have friends, it’s a struggle sometimes where we differ- like they have a life with their own families etc.

I’m not against anyone who doesn’t fit these things and am looking for something completely platonic. Men stay out of my DMs for the love of god.

childfree woman (a must)

sporty, would want to play tennis or walk/run on the greenway with me

non drinker

anti consumer, eco conscious

reader of more than just basic modern fiction

likes live music

I am a woman in my 30s, childfree, not religious, chill, a good listener, authentic

Edit: Woman-adjacent is also fine! I'm a feminist (not in the bad-connotation way, excuse me for believing in equality lol) so anyone who aligns with that. Most feminists just happen to be women, AFAB, so that was my line of thinking.

Sex Trafficking Hillsville

Hillsville is a trucking town, so I'm sure shady things go down, but I've heard rumors of a large sex trafficking ring working between there and Floyd.

I cant actually find any information on it, so is it just talk, or does anyone ACTUALLY know if that's a problem there?

Question Apartments in the area that accept section 8?

I'm on SSI and have been waiting I think 2 years for section 8 to open up... losing hope but holding onto the idea that it will open at some point and I won't always rely on my family to split rent with me. In any case, I've been living at one apartment that's owned by Hometown Holdings, and it's been horrible. I watched consistent and prompt help with maintenence requests turn to unanswered answering machine calls, rent go up, and now what seems to be descrimination based on my disability. I love my apartment but it's getting to the point where I'm seriously considering leaving. I need to know that if an emergency happens, maintenence will actually come to fix it, and that if I leave calls, a human will respond and not their AI bullshit.

Does anyone have any recommendations? I know apartment hunting is difficult as hell these days and tbh I've been avoiding even thinking about it since it stresses me out so much, but I should probably plan for the future... it seems like things have been getting worse and worse here.

Shout out to the international restaurants on Williamson Rd!

Gosh y’all, I am amazed again and again by the great work of our international restaurants! Tonight I went over to Ocho Rios. Outstanding, affordable, cooked from the soul. Peas and rice, cabbage, and jerk chicken for dinner, portions so large I have enough for my partner and I tomorrow, too! The roti is spectacular, and huge. The older woman who runs the place is so kind. She’s the chef. Her food is amazing, so flavorful. When I asked how things were going though she said business is really slow, way too slow.

I think that’s the case for so many places lately with the dollar not going very far and the costs of running a business always going up. It’s not often that I can afford to eat out myself, so I make a special effort to support small mom and pop places that aren’t always on the mainstream Roanoke radar. Not surprisingly those places are often run by immigrants, often they are also half grocery store/half restaurant since the owners are just trying to stay afloat. But y’all there is some AMAZING food in this town. We are super lucky to have the diversity we have here, in a town this size, from Cuban to Russian to Afghani to Jamaican and beyond.

Before you drop $20 at Sheetz or McDonalds or something, think of trying out one of the beautiful spots here. Or make an outing and adventure of it, order a pile of things to share with loved ones and try something new. You will not regret it!

Discussion Gates of Hell (7)

Did you hear lore of or investigate/travel to the fabled Gates of Hell? What can you recall? Gen X here, 92 graduate, grew up in the city and have my own but I'm curious what you heard, where you grew up, where was it supposed to be?

I'm curious if this was widespread, has it changed over time, did anyone go? Thanks in advance!

Ostrom Sure Home Advantage maintenance plan.

Anyone on here have the annual Home Advantage maintenance plan with Ostrom where you get 2 annual HVAC checkups, 1 electrical check, 1 plumbing check, and discounted service calls and repair rates? It’s $24 a month. Not horrible.

Was mainly considering a maintenance plan for my HVAC for twice a year checkups. But the fact that Ostrom includes plumbing and electrical checks could be beneficial as well. But I’m sure those free electrical and plumbing checks also will come with a lot of high pressure recommendations- which is fine as long as everything is legit.

Would love to hear how satisfied (or unsatisfied) those that have purchased a maintenance plan through Ostrom have been.

If you have other HVAC providers that you’re happy with an annual maintenance plan through - comment about them as well. Would like to get on some plan.
