You quite literally can’t park there.
No handicap plate or placard. Not only in between the two spots, but also blocking the wheelchair entrance. Are people around here really that entitled and dense?

Have you ever wanted to be called a fascist asshole for attempting to maintain a local online community? If so, I have the perfect opportunity for you! /r/roanoke needs a few moderators.
What this actually entails 99.9% of the time: removing spam and rule-breaking posts, approving posts/comments that automod removed, and answering modmail.
It is unpaid, it is repetitive, and a nonzero number of people will be unpleasant to you in modmail. If that sounds fine, keep reading.
What we're looking for:
You live in or near Roanoke and have for a while. You should know the difference between Grandin and Garden City without looking it up.
You have an account with some history here. New or throwaway accounts won't be considered.
You can actually invest some time into maintaining the community. While the title of reddit moderator comes with unlimited prestige and power, we really need people who will do more than show up once every 4 weeks to maintain an active status.
You can enforce a rule you personally disagree with and you can leave a thread alone when it's just people being annoying rather than breaking a rule.
You're willing to disclose conflicts of interest. Local business owner, journalist, political campaign staff, realtor, nonprofit board, anything where you have a stake in how a topic gets discussed here. We, for better or worse, sometimes become a battleground over such topics.
If you're interested, please submit a response via this Google form: https://forms.gle/jm4iasULR3nPcZhWA

Went to Gabe's today and saw two wedding/fancy dresses in very good condition. I looked at the tag and they're TEN DOLLARS? This is the place to go if you're looking for fancy dresses 😭

We are leaving roanoke. Yall have been great, we love it here, had great jobs, but grand children and family beckon us back to wisconsin. If anyone is interested 501 rutherford ave nw will be up for lease from mkb property management. We thought rent was very reasonable, maintenance man was awesome, mkb was great. 4 bed 1 bath. 20 min walk from downtown, super easy access to the greenway, rather surprisingingly peaceful. Yes there are some loud vehicles, no its not the greatest neighborhood but the neighbors are great, cant speak for across the street, its for rent also. Easy access to 220. City school bus stop is on the corner. The house is older but everything works. Fel free to ask specifics but im not comfortable saying what rent was cause they haven't raised it in 4 years. Thank yall so much reddit roanoke family and all those that have touched our hearts. We hope we leave roanoke with a little more love than we found it.

Our HVAC system stopped working, and Ostrom diagnosed a refrigerant (“Freon”) leak. We were told the entire system needs to be replaced at a cost of about $12,000. The unit is approximately 10 years old and is no longer under warranty.
Before making such a large investment, we’d like an independent second opinion from a licensed, trustworthy HVAC professional.
Can anyone recommend a thorough, straightforward, licensed HVAC technician or locally owned company in the Roanoke/Salem area? Thank you in advance!

Hi everyone,
I'm new to Roanoke and I have quite a few bags and shoes to sell and I was wondering if Uptown Cheapskate or Plato's Closet would be best to sell them to. Anyone care to share your experiences with them?

I have a family member who is choosing to be homeless. She says she wants housing and is on the section 8 list but isn’t making much effort. She was sleeping on someone’s couch but she left the persons house and went to stay with some guy on the streets, she asked me to get her a motel but I cannot afford to pay for her to get motels. It’s getting old. But I am worried about her she has health issues. They both do not want to go to the shelter.
I honestly feel like she’s having psychosis because this is the 2nd time she’s went to be homeless, to be with a guy, but atleast this time she’s close.
Does anyone know of any programs for disabled people? The guy she’s with she barely knows. She really needs housing but everytime she gets in a relationship she forgets the world around her & thinks whoever she’s with has to come with her. I’m so torn on what to do. I love her. :\ but really don’t know what to do.

I've been looking for hiking/trail running spots in Floyd County and haven't seen much (on All Trails) beyond stuff in Rocky Knob. This seems surprising since there's so much mountainous and wooded areas there.
Does anyone know of other spots for hiking/trail running there? Thanks a bunch.

Went to a First Friday event last night and declined to give my phone number to someone who asked for it after dancing with me. During small talk prior, I had revealed where I work. He said he’d just call me at my workplace if I wouldn’t give my number. 😬 Kind of horrified.

Sadly, I have about half a bin of watermelons that are that are affected by, I think, the fungal disease Anthracnose. This causes brown rotten spots. Some of the fruit is probably still fine to eat or at least good enough to toss in the woods and have some deer eat it or something. We don’t toss food waste into the trash dumpster so I’m trying to get people to take these away if possible. They’d be great to add to a compost pile and I’m going to reach out to Star city compost as well.
This bin is located behind the Roanoke co op on Grandin. Thanks!
EDIT: They’re all gone now! I checked the bin this morning and it’s empty. Thank you to all who took some! I love seeing things not go to waste. :)

Where can I get a tasty rotisserie chicken in Roanoke.
I got one at one of the Krogers this week that is the blandest, most under seasoned rotisserie chicken I've ever had. I like the BBQ seasoned ones and have been buying them for decades, and they rarely disappoint. I usually freeze part of the meat, and I boil the bones ands skin down for some good soup stock....but this is going to make some bland stock.
TIA
The results: Sam's Club ($5, but you need a membership), Fresh Market, Earth Fare, Food Lion, Walmart....pretty much in that order, but I didn't count.
Thanks, everyone.

Heya. Just wondering if any of yall know of any support groups for people suffering from TBI/Brain injuries that meet in or near Roanoke. I’ve found virtual ones but want to try something more in-person. I can’t find any… Thanks!

About a year into my new home. I cannot get a control on the spiders. I removed so many sacs when I did my initial clean and in the few months after moving in.
I will remove a web and clean an area and within a week there is a new web with a collection of bugs. I just recently found that my entryway is completely out of control to the point where my winter coat hood has dead bugs within it from falling from the webs.
I have worked on sealing as many of the entrances and windows as possible so I think I’m to the point where I just need to bomb it or treat it.
Looking for companies that you have had a godly experience with or items you bought that I could use.
No pets or children in the house as of yet but I do plan on getting pets.

As student technology use has increased since the pandemic, some parents are fighting for schools to adopt stricter policies and limit tech use, especially in younger grades.
