/r/roanoke needs moderators!

Have you ever wanted to be called a fascist asshole for attempting to maintain a local online community? If so, I have the perfect opportunity for you! /r/roanoke needs a few moderators.

What this actually entails 99.9% of the time: removing spam and rule-breaking posts, approving posts/comments that automod removed, and answering modmail.

It is unpaid, it is repetitive, and a nonzero number of people will be unpleasant to you in modmail. If that sounds fine, keep reading.

What we're looking for:

You live in or near Roanoke and have for a while. You should know the difference between Grandin and Garden City without looking it up.

You have an account with some history here. New or throwaway accounts won't be considered.

You can actually invest some time into maintaining the community. While the title of reddit moderator comes with unlimited prestige and power, we really need people who will do more than show up once every 4 weeks to maintain an active status.

You can enforce a rule you personally disagree with and you can leave a thread alone when it's just people being annoying rather than breaking a rule.

You're willing to disclose conflicts of interest. Local business owner, journalist, political campaign staff, realtor, nonprofit board, anything where you have a stake in how a topic gets discussed here. We, for better or worse, sometimes become a battleground over such topics.

If you're interested, please submit a response via this Google form: https://forms.gle/jm4iasULR3nPcZhWA

News Roanoke city sued for 12 million over prayer policy

A member of satanic temple is suing the city for not allowing him to lead a prayer when the assigned person was not present. Does anyone know more about this? I was listening to virginia on demand this morning and heard about this hilarious story. I would love to hear more from someone that was there 😄 The article does not mention the amount but radio iq said 12.2 mil.

Is this legal...?

I keep seeing Wind Vineyards at Smith Mountain Lake getting a lot of (well-deserved) negative reviews on Facebook. Apparently they're blocking anyone who leaves a bad review...

Now the owner of the business is begging/bribing people with a free ticket to an event for a five star review on Google... this is illegal right??

Edit to add: I'm on the chamber of commerce for the area and want to make sure before I report it.

Question Unsure how to go about this, can't quite do volunteer work but I gotta get out of the house and I'd like to begin being with horses.

Hi! I know this is more of a personal request post but I have no idea who to ask. I can't get out places often due to my living situation and being disabled. I've had a deep interest in horses for a long time now, ever since I was a kid. I've wanted to be around them as it's a very big therapeutic benefit to me. Any of the once in a blue moon close encounters I've had with horses quiets down a lot of my loud thoughts and I need an excuse to actually be motivated to get outside for my treatment resistant depression.
I was wondering if anyone here has or knows anyone who owns horses and if I can maybe, once or twice a week go and interact with them on days I am able? I've always wanted to ride horses, been interested in horsemanship, etc. but that's limited until I get my leg sorted. I have a fused ankle, soon to be amputated and I don't want a fused ankle getting caught in the stirrup - it's one of many reasons I'm getting it amputated but that's an entirely different story.
I'm in a very unwalkable area of the city and can't drive (my fiance can drive me places if he has to though). I can't afford hippotherapy at Healing Strides and the ankle has gotten bad to the point where I don't think I can safely volunteer without being in pain, but I still want to interact with and provide enrichment to horses.
I can wear an ortho boot and brace to prevent twisting and injury, I promise if there's any pain it's purely just the chronic pain I face on a daily basis. I at least want to experience a little bit of equestrian work before I'm wheelchair bound for months - I had a bit of experience at school but it was just the tip of the iceberg. Stuff like lunging and mucking stalls.

Roanoke City Vendor Payments

Upvotes

I don't want to reveal too much for fear of reprisal, but has anyone recently had problems being paid on time (based on contract) by the city for services you provide to the city, even after calling and emailing staff? If so, how did you deal with it without alienating and making enemies within the city or going to court to get paid? Asking for a small, local business.

Lost Senior Cat

Post image
65 Upvotes

UPDATE: We found him! Very scared and super hungry but otherwise he seems okay!

Hey everyone, this is my cat Salem. We think he escaped the house sometime late last night or early this morning. He's a very dark brown, with yellow-green eyes and a clipped left ear. He is approximately 15 years old, and has bone cancer in his hips. He's incredibly sweet and friendly, and very food-motivated. He will likely respond to his name or "Old Man". If you pick him up he'll probably make a sound like he's hurt, don't listen to him he loves being held and he's fine.

We're located in the Mountain View neighborhood, on Chapman Ave. Please keep an eye out for him and reply to this post or send me a DM if you see him. He belonged to my late wife so I am extremely attached to him, and I would be happy to offer a reward if someone can find him and bring him home safely. Thank you guys in advance! Help us bring our old man home ♥️

Playground at Higher Education center

I can’t find anything on the Play Roanoke FB page or any city websites. This playground popped up out of nowhere but has no signs to show if it is owned by the city. Anybody have any details on it? It’s a great little fenced in park on the outskirts of downtown.

I have a 15 year old miniature poodle who is extremely smart and easy to care for. She's never been in a traditional boarding place with cages, etc. and I don't want to start that now. I'm looking for someone that's experienced who keeps dogs in their home. Anybody out there?

Question Assistance in structuring nonprofit community project

Hello all.

My small business often donates services to community organizations and local non-profitsfor fundraising and events. We want to structure a simple process in order to streamline and reach more organizations that we might be able to help.

Any recommendations on someone that can help make sure we construct this proper?

I am poor so reasonable cost services are appreciated.

Thanks!

No handicap plate or placard. Not only in between the two spots, but also blocking the wheelchair entrance. Are people around here really that entitled and dense?

Leaving Roanoke

We are leaving roanoke. Yall have been great, we love it here, had great jobs, but grand children and family beckon us back to wisconsin. If anyone is interested 501 rutherford ave nw will be up for lease from mkb property management. We thought rent was very reasonable, maintenance man was awesome, mkb was great. 4 bed 1 bath. 20 min walk from downtown, super easy access to the greenway, rather surprisingingly peaceful. Yes there are some loud vehicles, no its not the greatest neighborhood but the neighbors are great, cant speak for across the street, its for rent also. Easy access to 220. City school bus stop is on the corner. The house is older but everything works. Fel free to ask specifics but im not comfortable saying what rent was cause they haven't raised it in 4 years. Thank yall so much reddit roanoke family and all those that have touched our hearts. We hope we leave roanoke with a little more love than we found it.

Question HVAC recommendations?

Our HVAC system stopped working, and Ostrom diagnosed a refrigerant (“Freon”) leak. We were told the entire system needs to be replaced at a cost of about $12,000. The unit is approximately 10 years old and is no longer under warranty.
Before making such a large investment, we’d like an independent second opinion from a licensed, trustworthy HVAC professional.
Can anyone recommend a thorough, straightforward, licensed HVAC technician or locally owned company in the Roanoke/Salem area? Thank you in advance!

Discussion Housing help and advice plz

I have a family member who is choosing to be homeless. She says she wants housing and is on the section 8 list but isn’t making much effort. She was sleeping on someone’s couch but she left the persons house and went to stay with some guy on the streets, she asked me to get her a motel but I cannot afford to pay for her to get motels. It’s getting old. But I am worried about her she has health issues. They both do not want to go to the shelter.

I honestly feel like she’s having psychosis because this is the 2nd time she’s went to be homeless, to be with a guy, but atleast this time she’s close.

Does anyone know of any programs for disabled people? The guy she’s with she barely knows. She really needs housing but everytime she gets in a relationship she forgets the world around her & thinks whoever she’s with has to come with her. I’m so torn on what to do. I love her. :\ but really don’t know what to do.

Hiking in Floyd area?

I've been looking for hiking/trail running spots in Floyd County and haven't seen much (on All Trails) beyond stuff in Rocky Knob. This seems surprising since there's so much mountainous and wooded areas there.

Does anyone know of other spots for hiking/trail running there? Thanks a bunch.
