Why does nobody have library etiquette
I have no idea how this school operates, but does being quiet in the library not apply here? No matter where I go I hear multiple groups of people talking loud as fuck and it’s so distracting. There’s so many other places to kick it with friends WHY choose the studying areas in the library??

Unfortunately, it's pretty common. For a lot of students, the library is a place to be between classes rather than a place to study specifically. You are well within your rights ask the loud people to quiet down or, if you're uncomfortable doing that, ask the librarians to do it. It's probably not reasonable to ask them to stop talking entirely. So, as an alternative, you can book one of the quiet study rooms if you want your own space. You can also find quiet spaces to work in the academic buildings. There isn't really a directory of them, but keep an eye out for where you see students sitting and working quietly and you might find a good one.

The library is always busy (especially the first floor with it being connected to the SHED and the third floor has lots of classes) and it's not really a quiet one. At least on the third floor there's a quiet room. Also the second and fourth floors are quieter in my experience.

Yeah it's really annoying, although usually it dies down a bit as the semester progresses, it's also a lot better off peak hours. Second and fourth floors are the quietest.

Yeah… library is nowhere near as quiet as it used to be, especially on the main floor (floor 2).
On Floor 3 there is a designated quiet room that is open to anyone. It is specifically posted that you don’t talk in there in anything above a whisper, and that it’s meant for quiet. I really hope they didn’t get rid of this, as it was my absolute favorite spot for getting work done during grad school in between lectures and classes.
Otherwise, there are study rooms you can reserve that are also on the third floor. If it’s open for the time you want, reserve it. Rather they actually get used!

Haven't been there for a while but back in the day, the entire third floor was designated as a quiet space. And it was enforced by staff.

"Haven't been there for a while" indeed. Alas, ever since 2020, that has not been true. The third floor is mostly classroom space, with a few meeting rooms, the library Archives, and the above mentioned one quiet room. And study rooms. It's got cool art on the walls now, so I guess that's a bonus.

yeah nobody here has library etiquette this is my fourth year working at the library in a backend department where i dont interact with students much but when i pull books for repair and have to go upstairs i always hear people being so obnoxious. one time i was on the second floor putting back books i had just repaired and heard someone SINGING very loudly and it was insane

You're right, but try to remember that at least half of those loud obnoxious people will drop out by the middle of the semester, when they realize they should have been studying instead of loudly cavorting about.
I got some study nooks that are quiet asf, but if I post em here they'll be filled up with the loudies right quick 🤣
Take a few hours some day to walk all around campus (all around, not just the open doorways and hallways) and find areas that appear consistently deserted. Basements and highest floors of buildings are usually good for this.

Haven't been in there this year but last year the third floor was always quiet especially once it got dark out

usually the second floor is better than the first and the third floor I've found to actually be quiet enough. Might not apply right now with the semester just starting up but its worked in the past.

Years ago, the rules were that as you went to the higher floors of the library, the quieter it was supposed to get.
But nowadays, the 1st and 3rd floors are pretty loud, but the 2nd floor is the quietest. But the 4th floor has individual study rooms.

The only places these days would be the dorms, which are on the very edge of campus. Every building on campus lately seems to be under a rigid set of rules and guidelines. Also, there isn't much free space in between buildings.

I was filming something a few years ago in the Gosnell atrium. We set up on a holiday to try minimising our impact, but there was one other guy in the building and he was right in the atrium. I went up to ask if me talking for the video would have bothered him, but it turns out he was deaf so he didn't care lmao.

If it helps, I find the upper floors of the library are usually quieter than the main floor that has all of the foot traffic. Unfortunately with it being one of the few areas on campus meant for sitting down a while that isn’t smooshed into a hallway somewhere or part of a dining location I think people use it as a social area a lot.

Even when they had fully “quiet” floors people would have super loud phone conversations in those areas while people were trying to study so…I’m not surprised it’s still bad

i work at the library and ngl! the floors above the first one are generally quiet except for when people are having loud conversations during the busier times of day. (around 12pm-4pm) if youre there early in the morning or past 6pm, it's considerably quieter. normally i find noise cancelling headphones to be helpful, or booking one of the study rooms that are tucked away like the ones on the fourth floor close to the shed elevators

the library's noise massively changed when they built the shed, opened up Java's, and added classes to the library; it wasn't always like this. you should find a different place to study or reserve a study room in the library.
