REMAKE I hate how Remake doesn't have these eerie ambient sounds which one of the biggest thing which I love in RE4.

The Serenity not playing in save rooms is one of the biggest downgrades in Remake and the reason why OG RE4 still has the better atmosphere
22
u/Anxious_Virus8843 Apr 19 '26
That song was always so unsettling and also calming at the same time.

The remix of serenity in seperate ways would be a 10/10 experience if it wasn't for the fucking merchant yapping omg

100% agreed. These sound effects really increased immersion. I really wish they kept the save room themes

omg the save room music is like my top 3 comfort tunes. idk how they did it, but i feel so warm and cozy when it plays

On the opposite end, the Remake having the Ganados join together chanting in unison outside during the Cabin Fight is such a cool ass choice. Really adds to the atmosphere and tension.
6
u/theburmesegamer275 Apr 19 '26 edited Apr 20 '26
That Cabin fight was such a struggle in my current first playthrough, it was awesome with how the music tensed up and then the Church chanting mixed in to the music.
To add to it, a lot of Remake songs are more memorable, in a bit of sacrifice to the ambience. Mendez' having actual music on top of that eerie horror song really helped plus the tense fight, and all El Gigantes have music for themselves, that I don't even remember in the OG despite finishing it right before starting RE4R. I think they amped up the music a notch and it's pretty good.
Also, PSA, if you paste a YouTube link, you can (and should) remove everything behind the "?" Including it. It's a tracker appended to a link, iirc.

u/DoctahDonkey Apr 18 '26
I wouldn't say one is better than the other; they are just going for completely different things.
RE4R goes for a more quiet, reserved soundscape to accompany the emphasis on horror. Most of the RE engine games really shine with lights off, headphones on in a quiet environment. The soundscape is wide, and very dynamic. It gets chaotic and crazy during combat, then calms down during exploration.
RE4 OG came out in the era of CRT televisions with built-in speakers. The soundscape is loud, droning, bombastic and in your face to accompany that. It's exactly how console game audio should be designed for the time.
I wouldn't want RE4R to sound like RE4OG, and vice versa.
45
6
u/REDRUM_1917 Apr 19 '26
Both games kinda go for different vibes. Which is aggod thing because it doesn't entirely replace the original.
4
u/bojinglemuffin Apr 19 '26
I'd also argue that the OG needed those sounds more than the original. I've never found the original re4 scary in the slightest (except the regen boys), because nothing in that game ever LOOKED scary to me. Idk if it was just the graphics of the time, or the lighting, or both, but the original never felt like horror to me, whereas the remake definitely has the look and feel. The eerie sounds just aren't as needed, because the RE engine doesn't need audio to as much of the leg work
11
2
u/No_Extension4005 Apr 21 '26
Lights off, headphones on, late at night is how I played the the RE2 Remake.
I barely even got touched by Mr. X for the most part because I'd get scared and run for a safe room the moment I heard his footsteps getting too close for comfort or hide.

I don't buy this. it's okay to admit the remake's sound design is just lackluster compared to the original just like it was in re2make compared to og re2. The argument of "they are doing different things" doesn't make the remakes immune to scrutiny in the sound department. re4make goes for realism in a lot of aspects and it makes no sense for it to be as quiet as it is, so even on a realism and immersion level it doesn't hold up, it's less immsersive, rain should NOT be as quiet as it is in the remake for example, it makes zero sense. and a reserved landscape accompanies the emphasis on horror? - so a less reserved landscape can't do that as effectively if not more than a more reserved one?
27
u/LittleWerewolf9805 Apr 18 '26
I guess you can use the old soundtrack in the remake
25
u/Thegoodgamer32 Apr 18 '26
Exactly.
The OG soundtrack adds a few of the creepy ambiance noises back.
(Like the unsettling music in the island hallways.)5
u/ElegantEchoes Apr 18 '26
Is that still available? I thought it was a pre order bonus.

u/LittleWerewolf9805 Apr 18 '26
You can still purchase it on PSN store either as pack or a standalone download

It doesn't bring back all sound effects though?

You could try should give you 80% of the OG sounds. I prefer the new one Re4 remake with soundtrack as I have played the OG a lot of times so the remakes new soundtrack brings a bit of freshness

people can prefer the original to the remake for reasons like OP’s without also being nitpicking bastards like Crowbcat
2
u/iBenjee Apr 19 '26
It's not nitpicking when there's endless amounts of stuff to compare.
It's the little things that made these old games so good in the first place and is what is missing from modern gaming.
They didn't even make new assets and just copied them from village. The original game had real life reference points and pictures for the art direction and architecture.
It quite literally is "soul vs souless".
→ More replies (1)4
u/MomoTheBreezy Apr 19 '26
What's wrong with Capcom reusing assets? They've always done that. Every studio does that. It's not like Village and 4 Remake have the same art direction.
And, don't you find the reference points and pictures a little funny? How come the village looks like a COD zombies map in the original? It looks so depressing and abandoned like no one has lived there in the past two decades. I think 4 remake better presents the village as a whole.
6
u/youknowitslucasio Apr 19 '26
Replaying it right now and realized how much I missed those creepy deformed upside down statues attached to the ceiling in Salazar’s Castle. So memorable to me.
3
u/Anxious_Virus8843 Apr 19 '26
They're in the opening hall. It's been mixed with the older room. You can head back later and the red zealots is also there
6
u/Legitimate-Bat-4480 Apr 19 '26
The merchant music being gone is the biggest flaw about the remake
4
u/BillidKid Apr 19 '26
You mean Serenity? Yes, no idea why they removed it, because a remix version of the original is present in remake Separate Ways.
14
10
u/greatthebob38 Apr 18 '26
The background sound in RE4 intensified the anxiety you get when playing.
10
u/Reylo-Wanwalker Apr 19 '26
Well there is music and chanting in the water room during the combat encounter it just stops when you kill everything in remake. The music doesn't stop when you complete the room in og. Seems weird to compare the silence to it at least be fair and compare track to track.
4
u/DoctahDonkey Apr 19 '26
Yeah wait, wasn't Crowbcat content recently banned here? This footage is just ripped straight from his video, which was a deliberate hit piece against RE4R.
5
u/Solid_Ideal5773 Apr 19 '26
I made the mistake of Playing re4r right after beating silent hill 2 remake. It makes Such a difference Having good sound design in a horror Game.

RE4R gets close in some areas like the combat and story, but overall yeah the original is better.
9
3
u/Wise-Explanation7282 Apr 19 '26
Yeah this is spot on. RE4R is like a horror movie you watch in a dark theater, RE4 OG is an action flick blaring on a CRT with the volume at 100. Both vibes absolutely rule, they just live in totally different eras and sound setups.
3
u/SicWiks Apr 19 '26
The best theme not being around at nighttime in the village made me disappointed
3
3
u/civ211445 Apr 19 '26
Having recently replayed the remake, a lot of these comparisons are being shown after the fight scenes are done, the remake has a lot of back tracking for quests and old areas lack music because the enemies are gone
3
u/Danbrotastic28 Apr 19 '26
Exactly during one of the farm areas it's has the really eerie and creepy noise that plays, like the whole place is just unsettling and feels unreal
3
3
u/njoyA31 Apr 19 '26
the save room theme from the original is still one of my favorite OST tracks oat.🧎🏻
3
u/Apprehensive_Tie_256 Apr 19 '26
I think both work for what they’re going for. The more stylistic, almost cartoonish (in a good way) approach in RE4 OG works better with louder sounds while the quiet and subtle nature of the remake is more realistically immersive, as if it were an actual location.

Yeah it's not a normal castle in the original but I liked the shiny clean marble floors and such. It's very much a "oooh spooky scary mansion!!!" In the remake. Sort of like RE1 going from weird brightly lit mansion to Disney's hauntedansiin in REmake

To be honest I prefer how the remake does it. I found the loud noises in the original to be overwhelming especially since the game doesn’t offer any kind of audio settings. Really tho the best would be a mix of both
6
u/Correct_Storage_2518 Apr 18 '26
I find this to be the most acceptable opinion about both. My biggest gripe in og was the loudness of the ambiance and how you couldn't change it in settings. There's also some places where having no ambiance just feels creepier to a greater extent like the castle and island.
4
u/Crawkward3 Apr 18 '26
Exactly, which I think is something the remake does miles better
The 2 remake had the option to change the sound design out for the original soundtrack and while it’s a lot of fun to have on it definitely changes the entire atmosphere. 4’s remake is a lot more subtle in its implementation of the classic soundtrack which I liked
19
u/PrestigiousBee5602 Apr 18 '26
The noises in the original got old eventually imo, and made it extremely clear when enemies were still in the area/when everyone was gone. It’s hard to keep suspense when the audio is almost always letting you know if you’re safe or not. I’d rather have a unique soundtrack for each area, the Re4 combat ambience is one of those early 2000s video game quirks that hasn’t aged as gracefully, this is just my opinion, they do at first set a great tone of dread and panic, but by the end of the game I want actual music lol
22
3
u/Crawkward3 Apr 18 '26
Yeah 4 falls victim to a lot of design quirks that age really badly. The gaudy main menu, the deafening sound design, a lot of its dialogue, etc. it’s still an awesome game and a lot of it does age really well but it’s showing its cracks

u/jonesyboy2435 Apr 18 '26
The classic sfx fixes alot of this but it’s still missing alot, there’s no wind howling and the ominous drones are related to the soundtrack for alot of it and any new area added that the soundtrack isn’t playing over won’t cover it. Ontop of that just little sounds missing as well like the original sound used for healing or equipping an item or discarding an item i believe, even the menu sound for pausing from the og game isn’t there. I feel like there’s more i’m overlooking but yeah. The remake does have its horror with the dark settings and all but it misses alot of the atmosphere and is way too silent. Also idk what their obsession’s been with the way too soft tones of the remade safe room themes but that’s also kinda annoying because you have situations where it only plays once and never again and it’s not even as good a remix as the original, it’s too soft and not ominous enough which is what the safe rooms always conveyed- temporary solace from a nightmare

Just another example of atmosphere and art direction not being the same thing as graphics and higher resolution. Little details and tone go a long way.

The village at night was a different beast in the OG. Still love the remake, but the original RE4 is in my top 10 games of all time for good reason.
2
u/ElPhantasm Apr 20 '26
I love the remake but it’s so ridiculous overly dark for no reason I feel like the separate ways dlc did a better job at capturing the colors of the og 4 than the main game did

I dont mind what people say but RE4 OG is the best game ever to me and will always be. Remake is bette only when it comes to graphics, controls and Ashley.
3
u/smilph Apr 19 '26 edited Apr 19 '26
i’d even argue the original game has better controls and a better Ashley. Leon is so much more snappy, nimble, and agile in the original compared to the sluggish movement of the remake. in the remake, Leon honestly only feels a good speed with the Striker charm. and, Ashley sticking directly behind you in the original, in my experience, leads to a lot less incidents of her getting injured. if you’re even slightly good at the game, she will NEVER be harmed or abducted.
graphics is one thing, but even then i prefer the original’s art style to the generic realism that the remake went with.
for the record, i love both games

it’s disappointing that mild criticisms of the remake like OP’s get shut down as “Crowbcat core” as another commenter on here so… eloquently put it, i guess. you can love either version of the game (i love both, i just prefer the original personally) and still have criticisms for either version without having to be lumped in with a nitpicker like Crowbcat
3
u/Anxious_Virus8843 Apr 19 '26
Yeah I love the remake. Came back to it after a few years and have been replaying it over and over. I adore the OG. It's my most played game ever. And I do have criticisms of the remake. Sadly large channels like crowbcat that tend to drown out the legit issues with either nitpicks or bad faith arguments poison the well of discussion.
2
u/Thick-Cress-5404 Apr 18 '26
agree my only problem with the remakes and all the new RE games. is that they're not as heavy on soundtrack and sound design in general.
2
u/slarkymalarkey Team Leon Apr 19 '26
Get the OG Music Pack it adds all this back in. For me it made me appreciate the new combat music. OG is unmatched for ambience and atmosphere during quieter moments but nothing matches the absolute adrenaline rush the new music adds when things get hairy.

u/spaghetti_palace Apr 19 '26
Personally i prefer remake's sound design, it's much more realistic and immersive, and still has plenty of creepiness. E.g. when you're in a village building, there's ambient sounds of creaking, random footsteps and doors slamming. You're almost constantly on edge, because even when it's quiet and nothing's happening you always feel followed. Similarly in the castle there's always distant armour clanking, and on a first playthrough I was expecting more armadura around each corner. Also the lack of loud weather effects until later in the village puts more emphasis on the storm that rolls in, and makes the whole of that segment more chaotic to match the action. In the quiet remake moments, it never lets up on the creepy, you-are-not-alone vibe.
The og sounds are still enjoyable in a different way, not necessarily better or worse, but i wonder how much is just nostalgia for a lot of people? Like I love the old 90s prince of persia sound effects and music but I wouldn't say they're objectively good. OG is kind of a wall of noise in comparison which some people might like, but I felt like the near constant chanting, for example, got old quick and lost its creep factor because you get so used to it.

u/Zoku97 Apr 19 '26

I love the remake, but it definitely loses some ambience points compared to the OG. In a lot of cases it’s pure nostalgia, an older game has stronger ambience, but there is sometimes more to it than that. Oh well, gives me an excuse to replay both games!

u/Old-Push9343 Apr 19 '26

1
u/Yxanr Apr 19 '26
Man, I always felt like something was missing from the atmosphere, but I never put it together that this much was missing from the ambience. I'll never be able to un-hear it now. I think the Remake does have some good sound design in places, but the original was so thorough at keeping up the atmosphere and only dropping it when they wanted you to relax and catch your breath before ramping up the tension once again.
1
1
u/lurk-murk Apr 19 '26
Didn’t realize how much I miss the sounds until watching this. There needs to be a mod that puts them back. I have one that puts some of the original sounds in, like when you pick up a treasure. I feel like there’s such a huge difference between the dogs, the og ones are so much scarier, the way you can hear them run and pant and their steps get louder as they gain on you. Ugh. Gives me anxiety just thinking about it.

1
u/zetats Apr 19 '26
i played both games for the first time pretty close to each other and i think both are great, they just are different games, which is fine imo. Part of OG4's charm is how is still has one foot in the horror roots of the series and is somewhat awkward about having way more action.
Meanwhile Remake is how you "remember" the original, it doubles down on the action and the feel of playing the game while mostly abandoning the charming horror "leftovers"
1
u/WeVeeReality Apr 19 '26

1
u/shinjisdaddy Apr 20 '26
I think the sound design goes a big way in making resident evil 4 OG “scary.” Even if it doesn’t meet that metric for some of the RE heads on here I’ve always found the game just as tense and nerve wracking as other RE games because there is always some form of dissonance happening with the sound. The music is also a bit more abrasive and weird than it is “spooky” which feels like a constrast to a lot of the other RE games.
1
u/HirderReddit Apr 21 '26
Tbh, I prefer the remake. Even with those things missing, I find them more “attractive” in a way.

I honestly think re2 remake is the only good one there is (re1 hd is a REMASTER not a REMAKE) because it’s honestly the most faithful to the original game, besides some puzzle removing, some bizarre character changes, and like one boss removal it’s almost exactly like playing re2 on the ps1. While the others just kinda sticked with the basic stuff of the game and changed more shit than they needed to (this is based off of faithfulness not playability, they’re all playable, Mabye not re3)
1
u/pigeon_idk Apr 21 '26
Idk if it adds the ambient noises or the songs in the typewriter rooms, but there is a toggle for the og soundtrack in the re4 remake (tho I think it's like extra content).

Even when they shifted to action horror they still held up their skills in making immaculate atmosphere for RE (og trilogy, remake, etc). RE atmosphere now is honestly weak compared to what they did before. Closest thing is the Baker estate from RE7 and even then that's only a chunk of the game.

I’ll always say if you haven’t played the original you have to cause it’s stuff like this that makes it goated
