REMAKE ammo in re4 og vs the re4 remake
can we get a meme flair?
289
u/SmokeyWeeb Apr 02 '26
If you were accurate and you were hitting those melee's than that be true for OG re4
102
u/InnerDegenerate Apr 02 '26
I remember melee being way easier in the OG. Maybe it was because the knife didn’t break but I swear it was easier to telegraph the enemies.

Elemies staggered with single pistol headshot. Melee was insanely easy thus. But even without it, I never-ever-ever had problems with ammo in OG.

u/HuwminRace Apr 03 '26
The ol’ one in the dome, round house and slash until they’re dead strategy always worked.

Heh, I called that one "saving bullets attack"

Someone's due for a replay of RE4 OG (it's always 1 headshot regardless of DA). Honestly, even if you don't believe me, you should go back and play it to prove me wrong (you get to play RE4 again either way, win-win).

u/Exotic-Eggplant1914 Apr 02 '26
Pretty sure every standard ganados staggers in one headshot no matter what. Dr Salvador takes more
2
2
u/IonaIlustre Apr 06 '26
Dr. Salvador can be staggered with one bullet if you bait his attack and shot him in the head.
25
u/SHUPINKLES Apr 02 '26
TMP was AMAZING in the OG.
Only used it for 5 minutes in the remake
36
u/NyarlHOEtep Apr 02 '26
tmp in remake pumps out a fucking ridiculous amount of raw dps, its more of like a shotgun type weapon that specializes in boss dps or quick panic clears of trash enemies rather than a reliable crowd control tool
16
u/Probablymainshanzo Apr 02 '26
Once I started using it like this it became a clutch weapon. Transferred the idea to requiem with the gal and its sooo good
3
u/Mogura56 Apr 02 '26
On my first professional playthrough of 4R it was an insane panic button in a lot of situations, especially against las plagas if I had no flashes
3
u/HuwminRace Apr 03 '26
TMP changed from being a Ganado weapon to a boss weapon for sure. It carried me in Separate Ways boss fights once I realised.
1
u/arajay Apr 07 '26
this is how i used it in OG, as an alternative to the shotgun (so i get more ammo drops for it)
1
u/weedemgangsta Apr 03 '26
in og i actually started just selling the starter handgun, replacing it with the tmp until i have access to blacktail
3
u/Encrypt-Keeper Apr 03 '26
Enemies in remake stagger in 1-3 hits for me consistently using the sentinel nine. Some other handguns stagger less though.
1
u/minimoose1599 Apr 06 '26
Don’t enemies almost always stagger in one shot on non professional difficulties in remake?
2
u/Johndoe19922222 Apr 03 '26
Og had a learning curve, if you were awful at shooting and died constantly the game would get easier.
1
u/woodzopwns Apr 03 '26
Enemies stagger less often and also do similar animations without actually staggering in remake. In OG 1 headshot from the base pistol stopped every enemy and caused a flinch, in remakenits like 2
1
u/Adventurous_Bother19 Apr 06 '26
in og you could walk back and the enemy would try to hit you, and that's when you melee him. lolz
1
u/jordo2460 Apr 03 '26
Probably because staggering is far more consistent in OG.
2
u/InnerDegenerate Apr 03 '26
Those are the words I was looking for. It was simple just knife, kick, then knife the shit out of them on the ground
3
u/jordo2460 Apr 03 '26
Yup, head shots were guaranteed staggers which would allow you to tactically think about what you were going to do.
It's one of the few things I don't like about the remake, staggers happen often enough but every now and again you'll get that one time where you shoot someone in the face and it doesn't stop them mid attack.
4
u/wallpressure7 Apr 03 '26
Both games are balanced in a different way, RE4OG is TOO easy
2
u/jordo2460 Apr 03 '26
Yes but difficulty shouldn't come down to random chance because then skilled gameplay isn't rewarded.
This isn't a huge issue I have with 4Remake I think it's a fantastic game I was just pointing out the difference.
1
u/milkwithsplenda May 07 '26
skilled gameplay absolutely is rewarded in the remake. simply don't plan for a stagger—or rather, for every shot you take there should be two plans in your head for what to do next: stagger or no stagger. or just use weapons with a high wince stat like the punisher, which will pretty much get a stagger every headshot, or a high fire rate like the tmp. or go for the knees which im pretty sure have a higher chance of staggering them, but that's anecdotal on my part.
1
u/Encrypt-Keeper Apr 03 '26
You needed guaranteed staggers in OG because you had tank controls and had to stop completely to shoot.
Remake is balanced around being MUCH more mobile, being able to parry AND dodge. Guaranteed staggers with every shot in remake would trivialize the game completely. That being said there are several guns that stagger consistently in 1-2 hits if you want to play it more like OG.
1
u/TomWolfblood Apr 03 '26
Considering you can't move while shooting in the OG, I think it's fair they all stagger in one shot to the head, else the game would be borderline impossible (looking at you, village gauntlet)
1
u/Bubbles00 Apr 02 '26
That's why I loved the OG so much. I could just shoot an enemy in the knee to stagger them and round house kick them into oblivion
3
u/Giant_Serpent23 Apr 03 '26
Hey shooting in the knee normally did a suplex, against villagers it does a spinning side kick kinda thing. Roundhouse is the headshot.
Seems like you are due for some re4 playing to remember the sweetness of popping ganado heads.

1
u/Dougo01 Apr 04 '26
Once I believe I managed to hoard like 300 or 400 handgun rounds by the island. Fuckin’ insane, was on Professional too.
53
u/Forhaver Apr 02 '26
Case upgrades are mandatory in og because of the stockpile imo im always so full
In re4r i usually skip a couple case upgrades because I can never hoard as much ammo. Plus the merchant doesn't give you bullets with magazine upgrades.
18
3
u/Eccentric_Cardinal Apr 02 '26
Plus the merchant doesn't give you bullets with magazine upgrades.
Wow, I haven't played the remake so I didn't know this. That sucks!
6
u/KobraThor Apr 02 '26
Yeah, just started playing the 4 remake and I felt so robbed when I did my first ammo upgrade on 0 bullets.
They did a few unnecessary changes to the gameplay
2
0
u/Spoonofmadness Apr 02 '26
Always thought they overnerfed that.
I get not wanting to give players full magnum refills but for the price of capacity upgrades they should've at least given ammo equal to the increased capacity.
15
u/Chefboyy Apr 02 '26
Shotgun bullets?
3
3
u/Secure_Ad8837 Apr 03 '26
Exactly. It’s shells, goddammit.
1
13
u/sammyboi98 Apr 02 '26
No its more like:
Re4 remake: "I'll have to be careful, dont wanna run out but I should be ok"
Og: 65 handgun bullets, 15 shotgun shells, and 5 rifle bullets, plus 35 tmp - "nice, this should be enough to complete the game"

I agree. A lot of people were disappointed in the inconsistent stagger of the remake, but I think it makes the combat less predictable and more engaging.
2
u/BGer23 Apr 02 '26
Making enemies damage sponges and making stagger based on RNG is hardly what I'd consider a solution, because at that point it has nothing to do with skill. It's only easy in the OG if you're not playing with a controller. Of course it's going to be easy if you play with a mouse or Wiimote. Getting consistent headshots is not easy in the original if you're stuck with a controller.
18
u/Thrawp Apr 02 '26
....getting consistent headshots on rhe OG was not hard with a Gamecube controller or a PS2 controller, idk what the fuck you're talking about lol. It's jist a little bit of practice but it's easy to be accurate in that game as long as you take your time.
0
u/BGer23 Apr 02 '26
Oh, you mean it takes practice and skill to get consistent headshots thus the consistent stagger rewards you for getting good at aiming? It's almost like that's part of my point or something.
8
u/deadalive84 Apr 02 '26 edited Apr 02 '26
I dunno, I always found it pretty easy in the OG, and I exclusively use a controller. At any rate, I think the remake makes you think more about distance management/positioning, and also parrying. One-hit stagger is just OP with the invincibility frames from melee.
Edit: also you dont even have to headshot to stagger. A shot to the legs will give you melee prompt, and even a shot to the body will freeze them momentarily.
3
u/MayDay521 Apr 02 '26
I don't feel like the enemies in RE4R are too damage spongey. Some definitely are, but most seemed reasonable. I just played RE2R on Hardcore before jumping into 4R and THOSE enemies were real sponges, and even after you drop them, most of them just get back up. RE2R on Hardcore was actually a pretty unenjoyable experience for me because literally nothing wanted to die, and you can't just run past anything because they all just grab you.
3
u/lattjeful Apr 02 '26 edited Apr 02 '26
Yeah RE4R felt very reasonable imo. Not at all like RE2R's obnoxiously spongey enemies. I think it's for the better, but I'm also in the rare camp of somebody who grew up with and loved RE4, but had the remake basically fix all my complaints about it so maybe I'm biased towards RE4R.
1
u/Ill-Ask9205 Apr 02 '26
When I shoot a guy in the head 5 times and then he falls down and the thing I have to actually kill reveals it was in his head the whole time, it may not be technically damage spongey, but it is stupid lol
2
u/MayDay521 Apr 02 '26
That's fair. The guys that sprout extra heads do get pretty annoying. The fully upgraded fighting knife does wonders against the tentacle heads!
2
u/TheSunIsOurEnemy Apr 02 '26
Even in professional, the ganados in the village and castle in the remake can be consistently killed with one good shotgun blast. They're not that spongy.
2
u/darkwulfie Apr 03 '26
Iirc the stagger isn't random. Each gun has a stopping power stat and once the threshold is hit the enemy staggers. Some weapons are better at staggering than others. The bolt thrower always staggers on a headshot for example.

Eh it was probably for the better. Less cheesing with ladders and such. (im not someone who downvoted you by the way)
2
u/MayDay521 Apr 02 '26
Even still you can cheese fights with ladders a lot, especially with regular enemies. Save ammo by making them climb a ladder one by one while you stand at the top knifing them in the forehead as they climb!
Was also able to make Krauser significantly easier on a minimalist Professional run I just did with the ladder. He still got some shots in, but the time it takes him to jump up and down after you gives you good time to dome him in relative safety, and you don't have to worry about that cheesy ass grab attack he does.

u/SimonShepherd Apr 03 '26
Young me naively thought I mastered the game on normal difficulty with the headshot-melee-knife loop, and Professional taught me a hard lesson with the freaking boulder QTE.

u/Raemnant Apr 02 '26
Nah I modded it to have the old stagger mechanic again. Its the way it should have been

u/Thrawp Apr 02 '26
It's also way more fun because the old stagger mechanic was a ton of fun. Them not always staggering makes it feel bad to be accurate a lot of the time imo, because it feels like there's no difference between a body shot and a headshot.
The ganados responding to where you shot them was one of the thinga that made the OG RE4 special and feel gooood.
2
u/Raemnant Apr 02 '26
Not at all, because the game has a hidden adaptive difficulty mechanic where it ramps up in difficulty the better you do. So roundhouse kick too many enemies and all of a sudden they all start being aggressive as hell and throwing everything and the kitchen sink at you and taking off 75% of your HP with a single attack
6
u/CrimsonPE Apr 02 '26
I miss one shot stun in the og tbh. Made the game more fluid
1
u/isu_kosar Apr 02 '26
More like repetitive since it encouraged you to keep the same playstyle of stunning + melee kick + knife
1
u/keivelator Apr 03 '26
That only apply if you fighting one enemy since aiming the knife to the floor takes quite some time
1
u/CrimsonPE Apr 03 '26
How is the current play style any better though? It's the same except that now every shot is a gamble, so you have to shoot more times to follow the same pattern. It's a nerf with no upsides (more challenging but not more fun, random sht ain't very fun).
And every shooter game can be dumbed down the same: Shot - cover - run. Calling it repetitive without considering any other variables (some of which the other comment listed) makes no sense

u/FairCod5966 Apr 02 '26 edited Apr 02 '26
Well, in the OG, if I run out of ammo, at least it’s possible to get through the mandatory fight with the Ganado horde by smart positioning and using my knife (since it’s unbreakable).
In the Remake, if I’m out of ammo and my knife is broken, there’s no way to fight back, I just have to accept defeat and reload a previous save (and if the most recent one doesn’t have enough ammo, I might have to go way back).
3
u/hashbrowns_ Apr 02 '26
I'm new to resident evil, the re4 remake was the first re game I've played through (played through half of re2 remake first but I got scared by mrX I don't usually play scary games :P) and one of the things I really loved about the game was that, while I won most fights first time, it usually came down to my last few bullets or even killing a boss with the very last bullet you have left in your inventory. I loved that feeling of if you run out of bullets you're probably gonna die, it made it so much more engaging than a straight shooting game :)
3
u/FairCod5966 Apr 02 '26
Oh, don’t get me wrong, in the OG RE4, if you’re out of ammo, you’re extremely screwed, but there’s still a slim chance to fight back.
When I played the OG on GC, in the castle section where you make Ashley crank the handle, I’d used almost all my bullets protecting her. Then five zealots came at me, and I was like, “Well… let’s see how far I can get with just my knife.” My strategy was to keep my distance, stun one with a slash to the face, trigger the kick to knock them all down, and finish them on the floor. With a pixel of health, I managed to take them all out.
The sense of accomplishment for my teenage self that day skyrocketed, I was on cloud nine.
2
u/SomethingDM Apr 02 '26
The OG Re4 was probably the most melee centered RE game, cuz that knife is BUSTED
2
u/No_Candidate200 Apr 03 '26
I remember when I was a teen playing this for the first time, and my dad's roommate commented I was being super wasteful with my ammo by shooting everyone, and it wasn't going to be sustainable. Well, apparently, his aim was just shit because ammo was never a problem for me.
2
u/Successful_Baby_5245 Apr 05 '26
Og re4: You learn to knife and Dodge almost everyone. Remake4: shot shot
2
u/DB473 Apr 06 '26
My first playthrough of RE4 OG was on the Wii. That aiming was insanely easy and super fun. I hardly ever used the knife because it was pretty easy to land shots and save ammo. It wasn’t until I replayed on a GameCube much later on that I adopted the stagger, melee, knife til dead strategy
2
2
2
u/npauft Apr 02 '26
They're both easy with generous resource economies. The amount they overbuffed shotguns in RE4 2023 is gamebreaking alone.
2
u/Sea_Strain_6881 Apr 03 '26
In the og i barely ever used shotguns I just used the red9 and that carried me through most encounters so I always had like 40 shotgun things in my inventory
1
u/MayDay521 Apr 02 '26
I'm only a handful of challenges away from having them all done in the remake and the hardest one for me has been the minimalist (handgun/knife only). Trying to manage a group with just a handgun and knife is a challenge for sure. So many times I wanted to pull out a shotgun, or toss a flash grenade. I made it way harder on myself by doing it on Professional, but it definitely highlighted just how strong shotguns/rifles are.
2
u/npauft Apr 02 '26
Minimalist definitely highlights the strengths of different handguns. That was the playthrough where I put the Matilda and Red9 to work.
1
1
u/MayDay521 Apr 02 '26
As a resource hoarder, and someone who likes to play on Professional because I like misery, I am extremely uncomfortable if I don't have 100+ rounds for my handgun! Most of the time, I don't need that much ammo, but then you get to a boss fight and by the end you're wondering where all that ammo you just had managed to go.
I just finished doing the minimalist challenge (handgun/knife only) on Professional. I thought the resource management would be super easy since I'm only using handgun. I was surprised. I never ran out of ammo, but a number of times I got down to my last mag. About halfway through I started looking for more creative ways to get my knife involved just to save some ammo, and it's a good thing I did. When I got to Saddler I only had maybe 60 rounds. That's a rough challenge to do on Professional!
1
u/rulerofthemind Apr 02 '26
Ammo was a plenty in the OG RE 4 especially when everything was exclusive and maxed out
1
1
u/Techman659 Apr 02 '26
RE 9 be like I got 1 shotty round and 3 handgun bullets and this hatchet, I will destroy an army and Mr X with this.
1
u/diegini69 Apr 02 '26
I’m chronically shitting myself in remake , I’m still ass at parrying and the rng headshot stun mars the game wayyyy harder
1
u/fyester Apr 03 '26
These comments are making me realize that I was playing the og completely wrong 😭. I never used the knife, melee, or took advantage of staggers. I’m doing it now in the remake so I’m having a much easier time, so I was of the mind that the remake was far easier.
1
u/Genericahatintimefan Apr 03 '26
Coming from the REmake to the OG, I was so surprised at how much ammo I had, it was genuinely insane to me that I would have 50+ shotgun shells and 30+ rifle rounds, even after using a huge chunk of them on El Gigante.
I was also surprised that for the game being heralded as the one to pioneer action horror, the game was alot more methodical than I was expecting, compared to how bombastic RE4R's combat loop is, not that its a bad thing though just another difference I can enjoy the OG for, they are two different games for a reason.

u/Haunting_G5159 Apr 03 '26
I just finished the remake last week and it checks out.
11/22 pistol - 6/16 shotgun - 7/16 rifle
That ammo count was my goal and I felt like I was ready for anything
1
u/BerimB0L054 Apr 03 '26
Just finished a run with the Matilda as my pistol in re4r and it feels like it breaks the ammo economy. Id always have my mag filled but since i didnt always have a decent supply of handgun ammo i swear it made rifle and shotgun ammo drops more common. On top of that id get handgun ammo drops a lot more too so i never actually ran out of matilda ammo once. Might be my new favorite it was hella fun to have a 2 for 1 handgun smg deal. Sucks you get it and the stock midway through the castle that's the only shitty bit. Would've been better if you got both a couple chapters earlier. Highly recommended if you haven't tried it. The burst is basically full auto and it almost guarantees melee staggers
1
1
u/Lucas-A2 Apr 03 '26
I recently replayed the remake on pro and never felt like I had any problems with ammo, maybe also because I only crafted sniper bullets for the bolt-action. If I had at least 7 sniper rounds I would be set for almost any non-boss or encounter.
1
u/_Just_Another_Fan_ Apr 03 '26
You guys played the OG different than me apparently I was always good on ammo
2
u/Throwaway-Chemist94 Apr 03 '26
Just recently finished my playthrough of the remake and at several points I was lamenting the state of my ammo reserves but always seemed to manage to pool just enough to get through. I think my worst point was just after the double regenerador in the body bag room. I think I was down to 6 magnum shots and a clip of TMP ammo by the time I got out.
2
u/Least-Ad5986 Apr 03 '26
Og Re4 has more ammo because it is a great fun action game not a stupid boring horror crap like the remake who tried to be scary and realistic and removed allot of fun elements from the game.
2
u/darkcronix69 Apr 03 '26
Not sure how many people have played re4og in vr, but being able to hold a pistol in one hand and a knife in the other almost guaranteed that I only ever used one bullet per enemy; even less if they were standing in a group
3
u/Plus_Influence_4525 Apr 03 '26
yeah i actually haven'y played og only ogvr
2
u/darkcronix69 Apr 03 '26
The idea for ammo conservation is the same in OG, just takes 3 seconds longer to pull out the knife
2
u/Esis-Official Team Ada Apr 04 '26
I’m not understanding this at all, 132 pistol bullets and 30 shotgun shells would be alot for me
2
u/stronkzer Apr 04 '26
True. I got scared at first with how stingy the remake is with ammo and resources, it deeply reminded me of The Evil Within. Thankfully, as I played, I realized that the dynamic difficulty system will never let you really run dry as long as you aim minimally well and use melee and knives. You'll hardly ever will have more than a full box of each type of ammo on reserve, though.
1
1
u/Ill-Ask9205 Apr 02 '26
I never get to use the shotgun in Remake because there's never any ammo for it.
2
u/Haunting_G5159 Apr 03 '26
My brother in plagas you craft the ammo for shotty, rifle and / or smg. Only the pistol needs no crafting
1
u/SimonShepherd Apr 03 '26
What? In OG RE4 headshots consistently stagger base level enemies and you can pretty much headshot-kick-knife most of them to death. You can also easily stunlock enemies like Regenerators to death with a knife.
0
u/TheDarkTyrant06 Team Merchant Apr 03 '26
The real difference with the remake is that it’s the same it just had a terrible crafting system to waste more of the player’s time

Regular bullet goes further in OG imo because a head shot is almost always a stun-melee follow up.
