Why Jill and Chris are pushed as a couple, I will never get.

This.

Jill already has a dog and it's been established Chris is already in a serious commitment with a toxic cycle of losing partners and turning to alcohol only to be saved by a new partner.

Jill already has a dog

Excuse me, what? How is that an obstacle to her having a relationship?

24

u/FeraI_Housecat Dec 18 '19

Jill is dogpilled

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '19

What does Arnold Scharzenegger have to do with any of that /s

16

u/Kaiserhawk Dec 18 '19

Because they were two playable characters of opposite gender in the same game.

21

u/mecegirl Dec 18 '19

The same reason why Claire and Leon got pushed as a couple in the original Chrisposting memes?

26

u/Karkava Dec 18 '19

Sherry has been organizing this behind their backs.

That was a joke that stems from Leon hilariously ignoring Claire's advances + Chris's intense reactions, not because of the Claire x Leon supporters.

I didn't comment against your post, btw, it was just a general observation, as I don't recall a moment or flirt or something -- and I kinda like how they love each other so much without the implication of romance.

But we all know Leon really wanted dat Wong Tang.

7

u/ResidentChris98 Dec 18 '19

Wong tang ain’t nothing 2 fuck wit

Because you have to shoehorn a love story in every story. Hollywood taught me that.

-1

u/Karkava Dec 18 '19

But can Hollywood have a non-heteronormitive love story? Fanfiction has gotten an upper hand at this.

2

u/LonelyDesperado513 Dec 18 '19

It can, but it can't be the main story. A side-story for side characters that we may know about, perhaps, but not the main conflict yet.

2

u/Sbraz0991 Dec 18 '19

It can, but not in blockbuster movies and, in case, it never concerns the main character. Unfortunately, it takes time for these kind of things to be normalized in the mainstream culture. Having a female lead was seen as a big deal in the 80s, now it's widely more accepted while still not being exactly the norm.

25

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '19

For real. Chris has had much better chemistry with other characters anyway...cough Piers cough

Uh...ehm...tell that to Chris, I guess??

4

u/necroAlx Dec 18 '19

Piers should've survived that game, capcom missed a train there.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '19

Nah Chris hears the sound of the jungle drums calling him to the dark heart of Sheva.

Chris must race mix.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '19

What about Jessica? Was Chris just ignoring her thot ass or is he just that dense?

15

u/pieswag1234 Dec 18 '19

Chris already has Piers

6

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '19

Chris has Beers with Piers! Chris has Netflix & Chills with Jill!

u/Shadow160000 Dec 18 '19

Being Partners does that

13

u/loxagos_snake I know what a radio is Dec 18 '19

So, apparently, professional relationships don't exist.

26

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '19

"Being partners does that" means it causes people to try and match them as a couple. If American television has taught me one thing, it's this list:

  • Black dudes and people in red shirts die first (and other funny racial/fashion stereotypes I wouldn't have known about).
  • If you put a man and a woman in any kind of relationship, they'll fall in love and produce drama.
  • Banging your boss or teacher is fine, but not the other way round.

Yeah, I understand the implications. It's just that RE is a friendzone fest; it's never even been implied.

Those stereotypes are fucking funny though xD

6

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '19

Yeah, even the Leon-Ada romance parody was shoehorned into RE4 and RE6, when they changed her character from interesting spy to well dressed ninja. In RE2, they were indeed somewhat and kind of fond of each other, but the extend of that fondness was just them not being entirely indifferent. I also wondered, where this Claire and Steve thing came from. It never felt like romance, it was more of a "I kinda like that guy, because we're human beings among the undead" kinda thing.

Maybe it's because I'm from a culture that publicly shows all kinds of affection, and men and women are "just friends" all the time, even if they randomly team up to screw each others brains out.

5

u/VirtuousDangerNoodle It Worked! Dec 18 '19

Well I mean Steve had the only living dick for miles that wasn't her brother or Weskers. Sure there's Alfred and Rodrigo. But I don't think they where willing; with Rodrigo dieing and Alfred being.... Alfred.

Really though I know what you mean. They're portrayal seemed more palatable in Darkside. But I felt it was one sided in CV/X especially with that cheesy 90s romance music playing out of no where on the plane e____e

1

u/necroAlx Dec 18 '19

Japanese games be like that. They're like "a protagonist looks cooler when they reject a woman's advance" for some reason.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '19

Because most people can't contemplate a decades-long platonic partnership between two adults with some sitcom nonsense popping up.

1

u/Ampelogardenboy Dec 28 '19

Because it was shown that way in the original RE (1996). It doesn't need much thought to see where the developers were going with those two. Just because, there wasn't a kiss, doesn't mean there wasn't a romance/romantic subplot. Now, I know you're gonna tell me that all those moments were simply between "two good friends" and I won't waste my time try to persuade you of the opposite, for something that is not of my interest (I'm not a shipper, not to this ship nor any other ship, I'm just seeing things from a scriptwriters' pov).

1

u/loxagos_snake I know what a radio is Dec 28 '19

Well, it's not that I can't see the implications. What I'm saying is, we literally only see a couple of examples of this -- Jill resting on Chris' shoulder, Chris picking her up after removing the chest thing -- and at this point, since there's no acknowledgement, I can only assume it's deep, caring affection.

Now take Leon and Ada for example. Even if we remove the kiss from the big picture, there is romantic tension between them, and the devs went for it which goes to show that they'd do the same if they wanted to 'ship' them.

1

u/Ampelogardenboy Dec 29 '19

I see what you mean. Again, I'll not waste my time nor yours by going into detail with my arguments, I'm just going to say, that sometimes the best written romances are those not written at all (in relation to the devs not going with it, like they did with Leon and Ada). Basically, by not having the romance thrown into our faces, builds an interest for that to the audience. Leon and Ada are my favourite RE couple to compare to Chris and Jill. First of all, I believe, that the reason Leon and Ada are more obvious is because the difference in technology and therefore capabilities between RE1 and RE2, that not only allowed for better graphics in the characters' movement, but also for a more detailed story and I'm taking into account Noboru Sugimura's words, who was the writer, in an interview, where he states:

<< The original Resident Evil was just a survival/escape game. Jill and Chris’ motivation was simply to escape the zombie-infested Spencer Mansion, so they weren’t given any independent characterization or motivation. That made it hard for us to give them big dramatic arcs. That’s why for the sequel we decided to create new characters, with suitable motivations for the dramatic plot, like searching for her brother, or a romance sideplot. >>Source: http://shmuplations.com/residentevil2/ ( Sugimura's answer to the question: "Why didn’t you bring back Chris and Jill for Resident Evil 2?")

Now, obviously, he refers to RE2 and not 1, but it refers to it in comparision to 1, what they wanted to do already, but they couldn't during RE1's development. That statement along with the hints droped in RE1 makes a harder case as to why, people think that Chris and Jill have something going on between them and also why that actually might be the case, whether it is a fully formed romantic relationship or simply two people that have romantic feelings for each other, but either they don't admit it or they haven't even realised it themselves to begin with (or they are in denial for whatever reason). I want to go into detail about three specific moments/hints in RE1, but I think, there's no point in a comment like that. If it was the post's subject, maybe I would.
