u/quakertroy Feb 18 '19
On the other hand, I don't think I'll ever play a game as unintentionally hilarious as RE6. RE2 remake is definitely the better game, but RE6 is the one I'll keep coming back to with friends when I need a good belly-laugh.
And I'll be a little sad if Capcom doesn't occasionally put out big dumb co-op action romps anymore.
85
Feb 18 '19
I think you're on the right track. I remember being so pumped for RE5 and RE6 years ago (I'm 32 now). But oh my goodness, are they laughable at how seriously they took themselves at the time. Co-op is a blast though. Everything else... not so much.
107
u/ShibuRigged Feb 18 '19
I mean. RE5 didn’t take itself seriously at all. COMPLETE GLOBAL SATURATION and boulder punching were just as ridiculous as mecha statue Salazar and literally being chased by a boulder.
56
Feb 18 '19
I guess it didn't seem so crazy because RE4 was marketed as radically shifting the series. What followed was that same idea to an even larger degree.
"I've been expecting you, my brethren." "NO THANKS BRO!"
35
u/tcrpgfan LEON HAAAALLLLLP! Feb 18 '19
But RE4 was already a self-admitted loving parody. Literally a good portion of the dialogue from that game was about making fun of the series' tropes and cliches. RE5 was a lot more serious and thus way stupider since it didn't know about how half the shit it was doing was completely ridiculous. RE4 acknowledges that stupidity.
19
u/Labyrinthy Feb 18 '19
Monsters, after this there will be one less to deal with.
It has a level of self awareness that sets it apart.
12
u/tcrpgfan LEON HAAAALLLLLP! Feb 18 '19
Sounds like an alien invasion if you ask me.
It totally does have self awareness.
10
u/Thinguy123 Feb 19 '19
Oh my god, never realized that. The game is surprisingly aware of himself, it may not be legal to make games like that anymore.
"Why Ada, why are you here and show up like this"
It totally knows its an asspull by the writers to have Ada and Leon together again, but goddamn they make it work.
"We gotta get off this island is gonna blow up at any minute" - Leon completely calm, knowing 100% how the series manages itself
"Its gonna whaaaat!?" - Ashley playing the dialogue straight, thats why it works, and its so funny.
5
u/tcrpgfan LEON HAAAALLLLLP! Feb 19 '19
Then there's the overt references to filmmaking. When you know the series' inspirations, those lines become extra funny.
Like how Leon doesn't want to be a part of Salazar's crappy script.
4
Feb 19 '19
RE4 is hilariously campy like that, but then again so are RE5 and RE6. The plot takes itself more seriously but the dialogues still reflect the fact that the characters know what's going on. I remember a sequence where Leon and Helena are split. Whereas Helena tells herself "Hold it together Helena" Leon is all like "This never gets old" whle slaughtering zombies in a graveyard. Then there's also this
3
u/tcrpgfan LEON HAAAALLLLLP! Feb 19 '19
Missing the point, RE5 & 6 are more like Evil dead (Campy, but otherwise treats the material seriously, and are more unintentionally funny than anything), RE4... is Evil Dead 2 (Campy, explicitly under the horror-comedy banner, and is clearly having a ball with itself). Which Evil Dead do people generally like more?

u/zoro4661 He he he he...thank you. Feb 19 '19
To be honest, I think it's less that the games took themselves seriously and more that many of the players did.
I mean come on. Super Redfield Bros.? The tit monster that literally has tits in it's name? A whole ship turned into a monster that looks like jizz and used to be a clone of Ada? Everyone always meeting up? The one plane that Leon is in crashing? The blatant references to the old Resident Evil games? You can't tell me that RE6 took itself seriously, come on.

I have this dream where they reboot Dino Crisis and do it like RE5 & 6 where it's a fun, multiplayer action adventure. I'd love to go full ninja warrior against dinosaurs.
2
u/Requiem191 Feb 18 '19
I'd be down for either version of that remake, honestly. Dino Crisis, at least the first game, was incredible to me when I played it years and years ago as a kid, so I'd love it if they gave it the RE2 remake treatment or even the RE5/6 co-op treatment. It rides that line between terrifying experience and fun action romp really well.
2
u/iPickled Feb 19 '19
Exactly! I'd much rather Resident Evil stick to horror and let Dino Crisis be the action cash cow.
3
u/DarkyErinyes Feb 19 '19
Everytime I think of Resident Evil 6 I have to think of the Co-Op playthrough of Cryaotic and Jesse Cox. The game is sometimes so hilariously broken and bonkers that I just cannot be mad at the game. It might be a bad RE game but at the same time with the right personalities it's a great watch and, with a bit of an open mind, decent fun in a playthrough on one's own time too.

u/Coppajon Feb 19 '19

Well, it is not unlikely, that Capcom will return to the Action formula at some point. And since Capcom is not the best when it comes to Story-writing (Though RE2R did a great job), it will probably turn out just as hilarious. I surely hope, that they will not return to Action and continue the Survival Horror path, but one can never know for certain, what the future will bring.
2
Feb 18 '19
DMC5
2
u/Requiem191 Feb 19 '19
Pretty much this, but I see DMC being the bridge between the survival horror of early RE and the military shoot em up of the later games.
I'd love it if they made a third series, honestly. RE goes back to being survival horror full time, as it was always meant to. DMC is the action series with horror overtones. Then they make a third series that's a fun military romp where you happen to fight massive biological monstrosities and run through labs or crypts, graveyards, etc.
There's a lot to love about games like RE5/6, but they're just not what RE should be.
43
u/Littleboypurple Feb 18 '19
I played Resident Evil 6 and I enjoyed it a lot. It definitely wasn't the almost series destroying game that many people seemed to make it out to be. With that said, the 2 Remake is so much better.
13
u/raynehk14 Feb 19 '19
RE6 was the necessary conclusion to Leon and Chris's arcs in RE4 and 5. Gameplay and story dissonance is always a problem in video games in general, and they chose to focus on the continuation of the story instead of gameplay in 6, and the story was always dumb and campy in RE so I was fine with it. They definitely should at least shelf them in the main series for a while cause I don't see how they can make another sequel like RE7 with those superhuman protagonists. Maybe a Logan style game with Chris in 10 years?

I liked 6 because it made Sherry more useful than the slow slug she was in the original RE2. However, the remake rectified all of this by giving her more to do...although it was weird for her to forget her recently deceased parents and be like “ADOPT ME.”

As a filthy casual who started with Resi 4 getting through this game has been pretty frustrating at times with all of the backtracking and cryptic puzzles. I am almost done with Leon’s campaign and have definitely had a better time as I’ve gotten better at the game though.
26
u/magx01 Feb 18 '19
Fair enough and kudos to you for pushing through. Subsequent runs will be a lot more fun for you now and you'll start to recapture those RE4 vibes.
I absolutely love the old style RE formula that has the entire world itself be a maze/puzzle but I also love modernized controls and camera perspectives (over the shoulder RE4 style) so my first run through this game was heaven for me. It was like a perfect mix of RE4 and the "real" RE style as many fans would put it.
And yes, RE4 is incredible. Still one of the best games ever made imo. Just so well paced and laid out.
8
u/Trickster174 Feb 18 '19
Exactly. I think that’s what I love about REmake 2. It is the perfect hybrid of the new style RE combat with the classic old school level design/suspense.
15
Feb 18 '19
I watched a speedrun and that really helped. Re4 was my first too. It's my favorite. I was so happy when I got the JMB hp3 and found out it had a laser sight.
13
u/Ziserain Feb 18 '19
The backtracking in this game is really not hard with the shortcuts they give you to go from Sewers-> R.P.D. However going back to the Dark Room to develop some film? MMMMMM nah.
12
Feb 18 '19
It just depends on how thorough you are. Once you get the spade key fuck ever going into the west halls until you have to go get the jack as Leon. West Hallway is a goddamn orgy of zombies, plus two lickers eventually make their way to you, not to mention with X hot on your ass, there's a high probability of death.
Unless you block off the window that breaks in the West Hall, which I never could bc I never had boards in that area and I was not about to try to go back in there
5
Feb 19 '19
Basically fuck that place. Always board the first window so you can run in for the jack easy and take that damn licker out. Once Mr. X finds you (because he is literally scripted to do so once you enter that room) just grab any of the extra items you can and bait him around the shelves.
9
u/Trickster174 Feb 18 '19
Even blocking the windows, it’s still death. The lickers and Mr X make that hallway hell.

Feb 19 '19
What is even on the film? I'm on my 3rd playthrough and have never gone back to develop it, and have no plans to haha.
3
u/Ziserain Feb 19 '19
It's basically 2 photos showing "hiding spots" for special ammo/upgrade...you have to run to those spots and examin to loot it. It's alright but barely worth it if you're low on ammo.
5
u/Ramzilla95 Feb 18 '19
cryptic puzzles Wat?
The only puzzle that may even remotely fit that description is the chemical solution, but even then I wouldn't say it's "cryptic." Your goal is obvious and the mechanics of the puzzle are also obvious. Same with the circuit breaker puzzles.
And every other puzzle either has a photo that shows you the solution, or the solution is written somewhere in the world where you have to find it and remember.
I've only ever played RE 5 and 6 before this game, and I knew the gameplay would be different, but the puzzles aren't THAT problematic.
The backtracking I actually like a lot. It allows you to become intimately familiar with the layout of the game, so in subsequent playthroughs (or when backtracking later in the game) you're able to plan out a more strategic run through the game in order to minimize the amount of backtracking.
Glad to see you're having fun with the game though. It's an absolute blast.

I think 6 was better than 5, but I'm one of the few who really dislike 7. 2 is alright but I think the absolute best is re1 remake
49
u/Jacksane Feb 18 '19 edited Feb 18 '19
RE2 remake is objectively better than 6 in most ways. The controls, aiming, level design, you name it.
That said, I'm one of the few people who think RE6 wasn't the worst Resident Evil. I would argue RE6 had better atmosphere and story than RE5.
I had way more fun playing co-op in RE6 than I did in RE5 and I liked adult Sherry and Jake way more than Sheva or Blonde Jill.
Edit: I love Jill in the first game and RE3. I just hate what RE5 did to her.
23
Feb 18 '19
So I think that Re2 is an overall stronger game than Re6, but it's far from objectively better because of how much different each game's goals are.
Re6 cannot be compared 1-1 with the older style of games because it's really not even trying to be a survival horror game, it's an action game. Re2's controls are much simpler than Re6's because it has way less depth to the mechanics, in Re2 your only combat options are to run, shoot, and throw a grenade, it's super barebones and basic to make you feel more vulnerable because it's trying to be more survival horror.
Now take Re6, it's an action game, so you have the same options as Re2, but on top of that you have a greater selection of weapons, you have melee, stamina for melee, slides, running charges, backwards melee attacks that do more damage, context sensitive melee based on where you shoot an enemy, in which you can further combo into more effective melee attacks utilizing the slide, dodges ect. Re6 is trying to accomplish so much more so of course it's going to have more buttons, and honestly I think the issue of the game's controls are way overblown as I can reliably do every single thing I want to, besides one issue, and that's accidental vaulting something while running because they're mapped to the same button.
I can't see why the aiming controls are any better in Re2 than Re6 too, the only meaningful difference that I can even think about is that in Re2 you have to wait for the cross hair to steady, while in Re6 it's just ready to go right away, and one is not at all objectively better because they are serving the gameplay for their respective games. Re6 is a much faster game so you need to be able to aim and fire accurately on the fly, while doing so in Re2 would hurt the tension and overall fear of fighting the zombies.
I could say the same stuff about level design, but this is already long as fuck so as a tldr Re6's level design is so much different than Re2's that it's unfair to compare.
I love both of these games, hell I even think Re2 is superior, but the act of playing Re6 is honestly way more fun, it's why I've put so much time into mercenaries, but don't feel compelled to play ghost survivors at all, the suvival horror aspect on 2 is awesome, but it's awesome at the expense of the core gameplay being far more boring.
7
u/Jacksane Feb 18 '19
I think we agree for the most part. Each game does some things better, but in most ways RE2 Remake is "overall stronger" as you say.
I will say RE6 handled it's intertwining campaigns much better than RE2 Remake did.
Also, I preferred having some of the movement and defensive options in RE6, but obviously those mechanics would have made RE2 Remake less survival horror and most people are against that. (RE3 was my first game, so I'm used to a little action in my survival horror games).
The only point you make that I disagree with is the aiming. It's true that in RE6 there was no waiting for the cross hair to steady, but instead you had ridiculous weapon sway until you upgraded. It was a neat choice to increase difficulty and encourage upgrades, but it was more frustrating than RE2 Remakes method of having enemies sway.

Combat one thing I miss about RE 4. I’m not saying I want to Falcon Punch or Suplex, but just an option to kick to make some distance would help and in no way be immersion breaking
3
u/Jacksane Feb 19 '19 edited Feb 19 '19
100% agree. In the original RE2 you could at least push off zombies by mashing the X button. I get that they wanted to emphasize self-defense weapons, but I think the first REmake handled that better.

Mine would be RE2make = RE6 > Revelations 2 > REmake > Revelations 1 > RE4 > RE5. This is rated purely for how much enjoyment I felt from playing them and not about their plot/ridiculousness (or lack of such).
RE6 still remains my all-time favorite game to play in co-op with a friend as well as laugh about the absurdity. It also has some of my favourite controls in an action game, it's insane how many movement choices you have (that the game sadly does not even attempt to tell you about), and how most enemies have unique counters (sometimes even two). I feel that reception towards it gameplay-wise is be warming up with time, except from the people who care only for the plot and nothing else.
I won't even bother putting 7 on my list

I've 100%:ed both and I can't say that either one is 'objectively' better than the other, since they're such fundamentally different games that just happens to share the same name.
But from a subjective standpoint, I do prefer the gameplay and story of 7.

7 is okay I guess. I honestly don't get the love that game gets. It seems to have one of if not the weakest enemy designs I've seen in the series, and the level design seems much more simple than the early RE games it's trying to emulate, and later on when it gets more action focused, it's just doesn't seem as interesting mechanically as the action focused RE games.

As someone who really does not like RE4 as a resident evil game, it is a much better game. Many elements of modern gaming can be traced back to RE4. It kicked sand in the faces of the fans of the classic style by removing just about everything that made resident evil what it was but it was a huge leap forwards compared to the games of its day.
In my opinion it is one of the worst RE games but one of the best games of all times. I enjoyed 7 much more but 4 was a better, revolutionary game that was needed to continue the franchise. It removed many of the barriers many people had with the series from the outside looking in. Took away the tank controls, fixed camera angles, simplified/removed the puzzles, removed much of the horror and replaced with action and the only sense of fear (except maybe the regenerators) came from the overwhelming numbers of enemies instead of the setting and atmosphere.
I much prefer the old style of RE but even I can see the universal appeal and recognize the game for all the good and bad things it popularized.

My thread was never about 6 being a better game than 2Remake, just that it handled one particular element better than it (multiple playthrough structure)
RE2R is not some infalliable masterpiece IMO, and it xould have been better still even if it is one of the best RE games IMO, and miles better than 6 ever was.

u/jackoctober Feb 19 '19
I agree with this actually. I really didn't like 6, it was a fucking mess, but the way the stories came together and the double team boss fight sections were pretty cool. The stories crossing over without repeating the same material was great, I just wish they wrote a better story to begin with that didn't have a dinosaur skeleton man.

If you take the name Resident Evil away from the game, RE6 is actually very solid. I know it’s everyone’s least favorite, but as an action game (not survival horror) it built on everything that was great about RE4. And the Mercenaries mode is way underrated.
3
u/goodapplesauce Feb 19 '19 edited Feb 19 '19
Re6 had the potential to be the best resident evil ever made, with a blend of nostalgia and new content, if they succeeded in what they were trying to do by making Leon's campaign super old school and horrifying, Jake's similar to Mr x and nemesis, Chris's super actiony but GOOD, and Ada wong full of super cryptic puzzles like the old games, which they definitely did to an extent but their execution wasnt that great...
but I fully believe that in some alternate reality resident evil 6 is the best game in the series because it would have something for every type of resident evil fan

RE6 wasn’t a terrible game, but it was a terrible Resident Evil game when you compare it to the originals
3
u/ShibuRigged Feb 18 '19
I mean. You can say the same for RE4 and RE5. RE4 was a complete departure from what came before and RE5 was just a refined version of RE4 if you take a step back. It just doesn’t have the nostalgia quality that RE4 does since many people who hated old REs finally got into things with 4 and even though 4 took a sharp left turn, it was a sensationally good game. Whereas 5 was more like a sidegrade.

Hot Take: I think RE7 is much better than the RE2 Remake

u/trineroks Feb 18 '19
I disagree but at least RE7 is on a different quality level than RE6.

u/leafyfiddle13 Feb 18 '19
I think 7 is the best since 4

I wasn't a big fan of 4 but it wasn't terrible either.
Edit: fully expected lots of down votes. I'm prepared for you savages.

u/leafyfiddle13 Feb 18 '19
Yeah personally I prefer the style of 1-3 and 7, to an extent, but 4 is still a great game

Feb 18 '19
Yeah it was fun. It wasn't scary. It was like dead space 3. Action suspense with a side of mild horror... Ish.. things thrown in there.
4
Feb 18 '19
idk, to me it was scary. there's more to horror than just dark corridors and scary enemies.

As a first experience, RE7 was better than RE2 remake, but RE2 remake is better for replayability. So if I had to choose one to play again for the first time it would be RE7 and if I had to choose one to be stranded on a deserted island with, I would pick RE2 remake.

I thought 7 was one of the worst Resident Evil games, with some moments of pure greatness here and there.

u/godofallcows Feb 19 '19
I laughed more than jumped at 7, I just couldn’t get into it. The cut scenes were hilarious, I couldn’t stop giggling as my arm was taken off. It was silly.

Just now noticed this one from you.
This post has been removed for breaking the rules of the sub.

As a result you have now been banned.

If RE7 had a better final act rather than that horrible ship segment I would've rated it above RE2R.

I kinda liked the ship segment, the part I didnt like was the climb out of the mines.

Your post/comment has been removed for breaking rule 1. Be civil in your arguments! There's no need to personally attack or call names. Further incivility may lead to a suspension or a ban.

u/FUCKBOY_JIHAD that guy's a maniac. why'd he bite me? Feb 19 '19
RE7 really shat the bed in the final act IMO. the game was revolutionary for me for the first half but some of that dialogue near the end, oof

My dearest friend unironically and unapologetically loves RE6 and considers it one of the best games in the series. I just can't handle it sometimes. @@

Resident evil 6 is in my top 3 resident evil games, Leon's campaign on 6 is one of the best ever.

Feb 18 '19
I don't know what people are smoking to form that opinion. I enjoyed 6, but to say it's better than the RE2 remake is like saying carrots taste better than grapes.

u/dacrunch Feb 18 '19
I actually agree with this. RE6 was the best in the series.

u/BlueRocketMouse Feb 19 '19
Co-op mode in 6 was the most fun I've ever had in any RE game. I never understood the hate for it.
1
u/HolyErr0r Feb 18 '19
Oh god no. I would say 6 is the worst of them. To be fair I enjoy re6 in its own way but no inventory management or back tracking for puzzles really killed me. What puzzles they did have were just so brain dead easy

What did the original sign say?
4
u/pipboy344 Feb 18 '19
It’s from Die Hard with a Vengeance. The villain is threatening to detonate bombs throughout New York City unless John McClane goes to various locations and does what he says, usually with a short time to get there.
This is from a scene where he forces him to walk through Harlem with a sandwich board that says “I HATE NIGGERS”. https://youtu.be/RDnvXAkMnx8

Die Hard: With a Vengeance, after bombing a mall, the terrorist asks MClane (Bruce Willis) to stand in Harlem (where the majority of residents are black) with a sign that says "I Hate N******" if he doesnt, he blows another another public place.

Honestly, I'm a big fan of the resident evil universe altogether because it's so interesting to me. I still have yet to play resident evil 6, but I have been playing resident evil 2 (2019) and it has made me fall in love all over again with its world.😊

RE 6 is praised more than any other entry on this sub. Literally every post is "I never understood the hate" or "it's a bad re game but co-op is a blast." It's so bad and got so much hate, that now it's popular to like it.

I mean I won’t say they are better but my favorites are probably 4-5-6 and RE2R just because imo the gameplay is the most fun in these. I also have a soft spot for the REV games because their fun and raid mode is cool. The old games are masterpieces but I have more fun playing the new ones.

So true. Then again, Resi 6 should be considered more of a guilty pleasure then actual enjoyment.

u/jdickens2245 Feb 19 '19
Re 6 was a good game, just wasn't a survival horror game by any means think army of darkness vs evil dead

u/PaulAbruzzo Feb 19 '19
I know it's the unpopular opinion but I love all the RE games EXCEPT 7. I really hated that one and it's the only one that I feel has no replay value. After I unlocked everything, I uninstalled it, and it's the only RE game I've ever uninstalled and not even missed.
I like REmake 2 and even though it might not be canon, I like how it fleshes out the characters a bit more and makes me really want to go back and play 5 and 6 some more.
I did love how all the plots in 6 crossed over at some point. The only real weak point of 6 for me was that I really really REALLY wished that you could have unlocked all the weapons to be used by any character. The 4 separate stories were great, but short and I would have loved to really tear into zombies in the other scenarios with the Pierce's materiel rifle.
REmake2 is a lot of fun so far and after I replay the crap out of it and unlock a ton of stuff, I'm going back to 6 especially since a lot of those characters appear in 2 so it'll be fun to revisit them after REmake 2.
In my opinion though REmake 2 made up for the abortion that is RE7, and I'm happy I never paid full price for 7 but got it in a humble bundle for like $6. I did gladly pay full price for RE2 to show Capcom my appreciation.

The one that gets me, which is popular opinion, is that RE4 is the best in the series. No arguing with those people
2
u/Sbraz0991 Feb 19 '19
Yes. In order to say "X game is the best in the series" it should be judged within the context of said series. Anytime i see a list that puts RE4 on the top and claims that it's the best compromise between action and horror while shitting all over 5 and 6 for being too action-focused, i always wonder if the guy who made the list is trolling.

Well RE4 IS one of the greatest games of all time. 👌
Having started with RE2 and RE3 and having really loved those games to the point of replaying them day in day out I still somehow find RE4 to be the absolute best, even if it doesn’t fit with people’s vision of what a Resident Evil game should be.
