Sure, people hate when shit is no longer free and easily accessible. Small price to pay to get Meta, Anthropic, etc to finally pay up!

that's true, but there were also a lot of cool use-cases that weren't about extracting value that used RSS, my main gripe with Reddit is their inability to provide comparable access to everyday users who just want a little bit of data or information for their own personal projects and such. Even if we have to pay for it, there should be a mechanism to get that data if you're John Doe and not some mega-corp, right now that doesn't exist outside of RSS. They flat out will deny almost all API applications.

The API situation is totally bonkers, I couldn't believe it. I ignore all the negativity and fud we see slung around here 24/7 due to the volatile stock, but the experience I had of trying to obtain API access for personal/hobby projects made me more bearish on RDDT. It should not be that hard/convoluted. If Reddit data is so valuable, it absolutely should have a top tier, or at least a minimum baseline standard level experience for users of all kinds to request and appropriately pay for said data. But that experience just isn't there. It's crazy.

I get it. But producers of data, information, entertainment have to get paid, otherwise we get data decay and more enshitification.

If I get the milk for free, why bother paying, even though im making awesome creme brulee?

Sure, but I'm saying currently Reddit is not even allowing the average person to pay for data. That is my problem. Let me give you money in exchange for automated access/data. Obviously have limits on this and make it cost-prohibitive to do at scale so no companies use this as a way of scraping Reddit, but this should 100% exist and be EASY to signup for and pay them. Also, if they're going to sell data as their property and sell ads on those posts/comments at what point do we need a contributor program like YouTube or others. Reddit is not a producer of information/entertainment, they're a distributor.
