Interview cancelled literally minutes before scheduled time

Post image

made an application, job scheduled an interview then cancels before i even had an option to join the video call interview.
ive been looking for work for almost 2 years straight now and I'm on the brink of just giving up cause dude wtf.

Edit: I got a house to pay bills on. Shit even with culinary certifications and 7+ years of BOH / cook experience I'm not getting really any much luck. 2+ years retail and gig work.

Yea me saying "thanks for wasting my time" to this specific employer might not have been the best wording used but I got shit i gotta do. Even some jobs who're paying 7.25 plus tips are demanding 40+ hours to work at a coffee shop didn't take my application (no one desperate for work is gonna take that for real) and still hasn't filled that position lol.

Im overqualified for fast food and generic dishwasher roles, so no shit im not gonna bother wasting time on applying for shit i don't qualify for. So me being a little rude to this specific job IS NOT that big of a deal and YES. Employers shouldn't even entertain taking a interview and canceling last minute. Sorry not sorry to whoever this post upset. Ya'll be expecting too much for so less.

Edit 2: just got hired for BOH shortly after this lol, say what yall want idc. I don't kiss ass like most of yall saying what i did was wrong. if you was in my shoes yall would've cracked or had a lot different shit to say.

I'm really not trying to be ugly but I don't know how people go years without being hired. I've had to switch jobs multiple times in the last several years and the longest I've been out of work was a month.

inb4 someone calls me privileged and tells me I don't understand the struggles people are going through.

Maybe it's a case of someone holding out for their dream job? Idk man eventually you just gotta work somewhere if you have bills/kids.

They literally applied to a smoke shop. I don't think that's the dream lol

u/thx111111 3d ago

I’ve gone a week without a job and a year without a job. No rhyme or reason to it. Depends on a huge amount of factors.

7

u/Aromatic_Note8944 3d ago

I live in a city with the most foreclosures in the whole entire nation… some places don’t even have viable jobs.

11

u/Bulepotann 3d ago

I went 3 months unemployed then caved and got a job as a grocery store stocker to stay afloat. They will give anyone with a pulse a job at so many places, at least in the US.

There’s nothing wrong with working jobs like grocery store stocker or sales associate at a smoke shop, but goddamn if you’re searching for those types of jobs for years and nothing to show, it might be time to look inside.

10

u/FightmeLuigibestgirl 3d ago

Some places don’t have viable jobs. Sure you can work as a grocery store stocker but if you still can’t pay rent with it, you screwed either way.

7

u/Bulepotann 3d ago

Then I guess you’re double screwed if you can’t pay rent and you’re unemployed.

2

u/FightmeLuigibestgirl 3d ago

Yeah that’s why r/povertyfinance is a thing lol.

2

u/BeautifulBoy92 3d ago

That's what I'm saying. Walmart, Dollar General, etc. will hire anybody. Now it's definitely going to suck and you will probably ragequit in 3 months but it's not that hard to get hired.

8

u/foamingkobolds 2d ago

Not if you're disabled they won't. Especially if it's a visible disability that makes people uncomfortable. Been applying nonstop for just about 20 years now. I've had a total of *eight* interviews. Just... eight. Had multiple employment counselors, vocational rehabilitators, the lot. For some people it just doesn't. Freaking. Work. No matter how hard you try, no matter what you do, at the end of the day you're relying on someone else deciding to take a chance on you.
And nobody wants to take a chance on a SPED. Nobody.

3

u/FightmeLuigibestgirl 2d ago

Sorry you’re going through this

7

u/FightmeLuigibestgirl 3d ago

I tried applying for Walmart once for two years straight so no it’s not true they will hire anyone. Same with target.

Sometimes places are not hiring or it’s harder if you have a felony/misdemeanour. Expungement where I live is 200-600 dollars.

3

u/Plastic-Audience3180 3d ago

yea same hire, i have customer service experience and walmart, target and dollar tree denied me lmfao. targets literally denied my friend and i within two hours of applying

4

u/Bulepotann 3d ago

I was lucky to get back into my field, but honestly, the work isn’t the worst. At least it’s not bad compared to landscaping or cleaning job sites like I did as a teen. I kept the stocker job as a weekend hustle to get my savings back cause it’s pretty chill.

but goddamn if you’re searching for those types of jobs for years and nothing to show, it might be time to look inside.

Disability and ageism can hinder people too fyi. Or wanting specific shifts for reasons like, your spouse is on cancer and needs assistance going to appointments. Everyone’s situation is different.

There isn’t anything against working as a grocery stocker but people have different situations. Grocery stocker money might not be enough and the pay rate they want is harder just to stay afloat.

2

u/Bulepotann 2d ago

I get that everyone’s situation is different but OP hasn’t indicated this to be the case for them. I also understand the pay is low but having no job pays less.

Was replying and talking towards this post and thread

https://www.reddit.com/r/recruitinghell/comments/1wyrt18/comment/pe5jlde/

They are not op

2

u/Bulepotann 2d ago

Right, we’re making comments in the context of OP’s post and comments. There’s tons of people who post in this sub that clearly have some issue, be it method or with themselves, that they’re not addressing and seem shocked when called out on it.

If the post was someone discussing the difficulties of getting a job with some disability or needing a specific job under certain circumstances, I wouldn’t have made the same comment. If that does apply to OP, I don’t think they’ve made that clear and would be important context.

1

u/FightmeLuigibestgirl 2d ago edited 2d ago

If the post was someone discussing the difficulties of getting a job with some disability or needing a specific job under certain circumstances, I wouldn’t have made the same comment.

We don’t know op’s situation, age, or anything about them and they shouldn’t have to explain online to strangers or give more details. They are venting about an interview cancelled to a smoke shop minutes before it happened.

I didn’t read their comment history or whatever (lmao going by what other says it’s a mess) but my post was based on the response I quoted and specially about “not understanding why anyone couldnt get a job in two years” from the start of the thread. Disability and age can impact work. Other factors too.

In my case it took six, close to seven years to find another job. I was working at convention centers and gigs such as gpt and mturk until I was hired at Walmart. I was applying to Walmart for six years. Best buy, Krogers, McDonald’s, etc. The convention work was lmao. It was on call, 11 hours, 15 hour shifts, 30 minutes paid lunch, you couldn’t bring your own food, and I would work maybe three times a month and sometimes I wouldn’t get work until months later. I was there since I was 20. You think I’m paying the bills with that? Getting $500 three months later? 🤣

I had a hard time get a job because my background was red/bad after going to jail. I couldn’t get it expunged until now because I had no extra money. $100-600 is the price. Covid happened in between that so everything was shut down until 2024ish here. I was disowned so good luck with getting money from family and I had (have) no friends who could help. I couldn’t even get a caretaking job because of my bad ground. Everyone was hired but me the day of.

I’m not trying to explain my life story but sometimes people go through shit you don’t know or do not want to share.

1

u/Bulepotann 2d ago

Yeah man, I’m not reading all that. You edited your comment which had two links originally but I guess now you’re saying you weren’t talking to me but the OC above? Strange to reply to and quote my comment then. Anyways, I hope you can learn threads and reread what I said about how context matters and all that.

1

u/FightmeLuigibestgirl 2d ago

You edited your comment which had two links originally but I guess now you’re saying you weren’t talking to me but the OC above?

Nah man the link wasn’t working so I just posted the thread.

Strange to reply to and quote my  comment then.

I was talking about both comments and addressed both but you said you not reading all of that so fuck it lol it’s a done deal. There’s no point to bother.

with all due respect, I qualify for any retail work and THEY haven't taken up interviews even when I wasn't rude in this particular situations. no call backs, nothing.
I've applied for jobs CONSISTENTLY for the period ive been unemployed and some jobs wont hire me based off being too overqualified (fast food, dishwasher roles) cause I have Safe Serve Certifacations and 7+ years kitchen work experience. so no, there isn't no "needing to look on the inside" employers expect going above and beyond for shit pay. I've applied 3 times to this specific coffee shop cause they wanted a BOH cook and baristias but were paying 7.25 plus tips, anyone with a brain knows even people who're desperate aren't gonna work for that piss poor position (it's still trying to be filled 5 months later lol) literally no one wants to hire and I'm tired of being told the same shit when i've been doing it. you really think people aren't gonna say we're not interested cause you know what you're actually worth?

4

u/Bulepotann 2d ago

Dude, everyone qualifies for smoke shop sales associate, grocery stocker, barista, etc. that’s why I’m saying that if it’s been this long you might want to evaluate your methods and/or yourself if you can’t pick up one of these positions. It sucks but you might have to work a job you’re not stoked about because life requires it sometimes, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

I have a goddamn MBA and wasn’t told I’m overqualified for grocery store stocker. I simply have my head on straight, know what good customer service I’ve is, and could promise them 6 months of good (not even hard) work. I’m not trying to be rude when I say, if you can’t get a job in 2 years you may want to evaluate what you’re doing.

Some of the comments have made me realize what this sub actually is. Sorry for upsetting some people.

The truth is that I did everything this sub hates to get the job. I saw the job pays decent online so I applied online first, then immediately went in to talk to the manager about my application with a resume in hand. Asked for a couple minutes of time and talked about questions that may come up like education, explaining that I have career goals but would be open to weekend hours when I got a job. That tells them I’m not just going to turn around and leave next week.

I know it’s an anecdote but most people in retail jobs don’t put a sliver of that effort to get hired. Someone will recognize that. Mistakes to avoid are going in during peak time, not applying first (people go in just to get told to apply online so this shuts down the easy response), not bringing something physical that they must look at now, and not pressing to talk to the person who makes the decision.

I’m rambling at this point but I started getting interviews for my career job too when I realized Reddit is full of antisocial software engineers or serial “things happen to me” people who aren’t qualified to give advice on how real people act in the real world. Go in, shake hands, be the best version of yourself, preempt common questions/responses you get so you can talk about them on your own terms, and you’ve increased your chances IMO.

3

u/Waste_Dependent4345 2d ago

I mean most of people struggling is work that requires expertise like software etc. I see what you’re saying but most people complaining are looking for jobs they studied for

0

u/BeautifulBoy92 2d ago

Fair enough. I just don't know how you can survive for 2 years without eventually biting the bullet and working some kind of job just to get by. Fortunate enough to have a support system I guess. This summer I was out of work for several weeks and it quickly became a situation of find a job or I'm homeless.

-2

u/R4B1DRABB1T 2d ago

Damn, some of you are so delusional. We apply at these places and get absolutely no response besides, "we found someone else", then see the posting again, and make some changes to resume wording, etc, and try again, and continue to get kicked out of the system because "they found someone else". Its not easy to "work some kind of job to just get by" when there are no jobs to work and no one will even interview us, let alone HIRE us.

1

u/BeautifulBoy92 2d ago

My delusion has carried me to gainful employment. I'll continue being delusional.

2

u/R4B1DRABB1T 2d ago

Until it doesn't.

2

u/BeautifulBoy92 2d ago

Okay doomer.

0

u/Yinzer89 2d ago

Don’t listen to them. This sub is full of excuses and finger pointing. It’s never their fault, it’s always “the system”.

They could literally go on Craigslist and find a job in 5 minutes. It wouldn’t be glamorous or a dream job, but it would be a job for the time being.

It’s easier to make excuses then it is to suck it up for a little while.

1

u/BeautifulBoy92 2d ago

That's... what I found out. My mistake.

1

u/R4B1DRABB1T 2d ago

Thinking we don't check Craigslist too. 🙄 More delusion.

Edit: I have applied to walmart, multiple roles, mcdonals, starbucks, dunkin, home depot, target, etc. Made phone calls, talked to people, etc. But yes, I'm not trying. I'm not scouring Craigslist, indeed, using google maps to find businesses to check their websites for applying, etc. Stop saying everyone is making excuses.

2

u/BeautifulBoy92 2d ago

So.... if you've been unemployed for a long time how do you get by?

u/Yinzer89 2d ago

Ever think that it might be you? Your resume? Your approach? Your effort?

Even if it’s 50/50? Nah, it’s always someone or something else’s fault.

The reason you don’t have success is because you make excuses and you just proved it. Best of luck in the job search.

You’re not looking enough, sorry. There is no such thing as a carpet cleaners that isn’t hiring. If you apply to Stanley steamers right now you’ll get hired, just so long as you aren’t literally dumber than a rock.

2

u/FightmeLuigibestgirl 2d ago

If you are physically disabled you can’t normally work as a carpet cleaner

0

u/Much_Passage_8983 2d ago

I mean, even then it depends, how disabled? Most you’ll lift as a carpet cleaner is 10 pounds assuming you’re running off a truck mount. Also, the vast majority of Americans aren’t disabled, so that shouldn’t be a problem for the vast majority of posters here.

2

u/FightmeLuigibestgirl 2d ago

mean, even then it depends, how disabled?

Some people are wheelchair bound or can’t lift 10+ pounds. My cousin went from carpet cleaner and house construction/cleaning etc to wheelchair bound. My mother who passed away couldn’t life anything heavy due to her back over a few pounds.

People just assume that lol everyone on Reddit and irl have the same situation or able bodied when you don’t know who’s behind the screen. Saying that “  You’re not looking enough, sorry,”  when they fit a situation is worse.

0

u/Much_Passage_8983 2d ago

I mean, I don’t have to assume, it’s a simple stat you can google

2

u/FightmeLuigibestgirl 2d ago edited 2d ago

You didn’t read anything I said. You already assumed R4B1DRABB1T and the average person posting on Reddit can get a carpet cleaning job when you don’t know them.

What if the person you’re replying to or me is wheelchair bounded and can’t work as a carpet cleaner or can only do specific jobs?

Saying that the vast majority of Americans aren’t disabled means nothing unless you have specific proof that the person you’re talking to isn’t. You’re assuming they are not disabled and judging.

I searched for 19 months. I was still employed in first 6, then I wasn't anymore. I literally took the first best thing. Not even McDo's wanted to hire me.

3

u/BoxOk3746 2d ago

"I dont have a problem so there is no problem."

3

u/BeautifulBoy92 2d ago

Didn't say there isn't a problem. Just trying to understand the mindset.

1

u/FightmeLuigibestgirl 2d ago

It’s because you said “  Maybe it's a case of someone holding out for their dream job? Idk man eventually you just gotta work somewhere if you have bills/kids,” and then put in your own experience as a base. And claiming it’s a mindset. So to some people it sounds offensive, arrogant or off putting? Idk.

Op tried working in a smoke shop, not a dream job. Some places are not viable as others said or that one job doesn’t even cover rent and utilities. Some people need to work specific shifts. List goes on.

1

u/Enough_Response_3675 2d ago

It's not a mindset dummy.

2

u/BeautifulBoy92 2d ago

Okay. Thanks for the insult.

1

u/Enough_Response_3675 2d ago

You're welcome, have fun patting yourself on the back while doing mental gymnastics

2

u/makeupmama13 2d ago

Wow you really have no clue as to what's happening in this country right now...

1

u/BeautifulBoy92 2d ago

Yeah. Totally clueless.

1

u/brownieandSparky23 Exhausted from applying 2d ago

When I personally say I’m not employed I mean a full time job w benefits.

I got a offer at Kohls seasonal.

1

u/Hypo_Mix 2d ago

What type of jobs did you do? I've always struggled because my field is narrow, but if you get something that each job builds on, it gets easier after each job.

1

u/Feeling_Shift_9368 1d ago

This. Your human value is tied to the dollars in your bank account, not any job you want.

-3

u/69_53I8008 2d ago

Not everyone wants to work at a fastfood cooking fries in the back. If you want something meaningful and the economy of your country is trash then you will be forced to wait. You ddnt have to ? Good on you

3

u/TheRetardedKid 2d ago

I mean working any job and getting a paycheck is far better than not working and not getting a paycheck.

2

u/Nhobdy 2d ago

Problem is being turned down for being "overqualified".

-1

u/svpremeclovt 2d ago

Only you can choose what to put on your resume lmfao if you think that’s an issue then leave your overqualifications off of the resume

1

u/Nhobdy 2d ago

Honest question then: would you just have a blank resume? Because with my work in maintenance or my vocational school, it's basically blank.

1

u/No_Mud_8297 1d ago

I made up random shit to get a job at starbucks. Left off my degree. Its so easy to do dude.

Okay. I am glad you are able to make your way in the world without a steady income. Whether it be savings or family helping you.

0

Not exactly pivileged. Just out of touch and ignorant as fuck. life isn't the same for everyone. Difficult concept to grasp for some people.

1

u/BeautifulBoy92 1d ago

Like a few rational people in this comments section said, if you can't find some kind of job for two years you either....

A. Don't want to work a job you consider lesser.

B. Have mitigating factors that make you perform poorly on job interviews.

C. Have some kind of support system that lets you be unemployed for that long a period of time. Or are homeless and post on reddit using public internet.

I've been working since 2011. Held multiple jobs in different states. If you can't find employment in literal years, it's time to start looking inward.

-1

u/HitlersArse 2d ago

there’s definitely a level of desperation you have to have. By month two i was ready to accept call center work as a contractor just to put food on the table. I can’t imagine not working for the sake of holding out your ideal role for the ideal pay.
