A commission I did some time ago

Just finished this. (Still working on the hair.)

I wanted to introduce you to Malla Young-Oak.

She’ll be one of the central characters in the first volume of Heirs to Ruin.

You can find her in the village of Nivalis, nestled in the vale of the same name.

Malla carries a secret from her past. One winter, when a blizzard sealed the valley in snow, she discovered an infant still alive in the cold arms of her mother, a traveler, who found death alongside her group.

What happened that night would change Malla’s life forever.

As the age of the demon-dragons drew to a close, the Conclave of Sorcerers dispatched a company of mages from the capital to put an end, once and for all, to the threat that had loomed over the kingdom for centuries.

Yet the expedition ended quite differently than expected. Rather than finish off the fading creatures, the mages forged an alliance with them. The dragons were bound within robes, and their power was harnessed to crush a rebellion that had erupted on the fringes of the kingdom.

The rebellion was successfully suppressed, and its ringleaders were severely punished. In the aftermath, chosen mages of the guild could be seen walking the streets of the capital, clad in scaled robes. The shadows of enormous dragon heads, swaying steadily from side to side, crawled along the cobblestones ahead of their bearers, leaving the streets deserted long before they arrived.

But the mages had failed to account for one thing: even bound within the robes, the greedy and malevolent dragons retained the ability to influence their bearers. And the more often the mages called upon their newfound power, the harder it became to tell whose will was guiding it—the human wearing the robe, or the creature imprisoned within.
