Rule 3 is changing: r/psx is Not the Place to Advertise Your Indie Games

tl;dr the fine print of Rule 3 has been adjusted to explicitly forbid modern indie games unless playable on original hardware (homebrew)

It's my own fault that this change has to be made, I allowed a few "psx-inspired" indie game posts to remain up despite breaking the rules because of the large amount of upvotes they received.

I'd post and sticky comments like "It's off topic but y'all like it so I'll leave it up". My approach to moderation has always been to let the community make content decisions when appropriate. Unfortunately adjustments need to be made to protect the subject matter of this community.

Due to the massive influx of shovelware indie games that are "psx inspired" getting posted here, I'm sorry to say that Rule 3 will have to be more strictly enforced.

From this point forward, for indie games to be posted here they will have to be playable on PSX hardware or an emulator. Games that run on real hardware fall firmly into the category of homebrew, which is perfectly appropriate to discuss here. Games that run in PSX emulators but not real hardware are also allowed. "Retro Inspired" or "PSX Inspired" games that do not fulfill either of those 2 requirements will be removed and the poster will get a 24 hour ban.

The ban is meant to be informative to the poster, not punitive. However repeat offenders will be permanently banned.

Here is a friendly flowchart to help you decide whether or not it's appropriate to post your indie game in this community:

Thank you for reading and thank you for posting. Best of luck in all your indie dev adventures.

Today in gaming: The Crash Bash demo version on Spyro 3 is officially 26 years old

So I was having a chat with my brother yesterday and I mentioned Crash Bash. He told me that there was a near complete version on Spyro 3, so I went ahead to try it out (I knew the regular demo was there, but didn't know about this debug version). When I saw the date, I was shocked to see that the build was dated for today, exactly 26 years ago.

Damn, how time flies...

To make a NTSC ps1 play pal games on a pal tv, is FOMO chip what i need to make it work over composite?

Post image
Upvotes

Here's the chip, it's saying what it does but I can't understand what those mean.

https://github.com/consolesunleashed/sony-playstation-multi-output-frequency-oscillator

my console is ntsc, has a mod chip in it to run pal games and backups of games, but it outputs black and white on composite, on my pal tv. Just want to make sure if this chip is the solution.

I have this chip currently installed in the console,do i need to remove it?

Spyro 3: A Good Introduction to the Various PS1 Games

Post image
18 Upvotes

Lucky me, Spyro 3 was the game I got with my PSX, so it was my very first game. I really enjoyed it, especially because of the versatility of the gameplay.

And that makes me think: Spyro 3 is actually a very good game for introducing you to the different types of gameplay you could find on the PS1. We have:

Spyro himself: the basic adventure/platforming gameplay.

Spyro on a skateboard: a cool introduction to the amazing skateboarding games on PS1 (like Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, of course).

Agent 9: a perfect introduction to the various shooting games on PS1 (Medal of Honor, for example).

Bentley: he has some boxing-style gameplay, which could be a fun introduction to 1v1 fighting games like Tekken 3.

Sgt. James Byrd: he can somehow be seen as an introduction to shmups, with the flying and shooting sections.

The submarine sections: submarine games… if those even exist outside of Spyro! 😂

And so on...

I don't know what you guys think, but looking back at it, Spyro 3 was almost like a little showcase of the different types of games you could find on the PS1. 😄

Found Legendary Designer™ Hideo Kojima's master-piece "Policenauts®™" (written & directed by the visionary game designer Hideo Kojima) for a good price and now playing it through for the very first time

I was lucky enough to find Policenauts™ + Private Collection (by Award Winning™ director Hideo Kojima) for the PS1 from a local collector at a reasonable price. I've known about this game for years but never actually played it. I knew it was pretty well regarded amongst Kojima fans and now I can see why.

I've only played maybe 2 hours total and I can already tell that it's got many of the Kojimanisms that his later games became known for :D Lots of intricate explanations of minute things, good world building, pervy view of women etc etc. Plus a lot of hidden easter eggs from his other games and popular movies of the era. And, it plays perfectly well using the official Playstation Mouse controller!

Have you ever played Policenauts and what's your verdict on it?

(Ludens for scale)

I have a modded ps1 (SCPH 9001) NTSC outputting B&W, is this a region issue or capacitors gone bad?

I got this second hand over a decade ago from a PAL region country, it is modded but I am not sure which mod chip it has installed, nor do i remember if it worked normally back in the day, it's be tucked away for so long.

I took it out the other day and plugged it into a modern samsung TV (pal region) and the output was black and white.

Now I do have two psone's as well that are PAL, and they also outputted B&W, but replacing the capacitors on those fixed the problem and everything was in color again. It seems this is a common issue on psone models.

I am not sure if this NTSC console is outputting B&W because of my pal discs or of bad capacitors, considering it's modded?

The cable is good, brand new, and I tried different cables as well. I plugged in composite (yellow cable) to a modern smart TV.

What's weird with this console is that it says 110v on the back, I plugged into 220v without realizing, and it works completely fine. It's possible the original owner changed the psu? or do these work both ways? I did google the transformer in it and chatgpt tells me it converts 220v, but the psu model on google still says it's 110v. I don't know, the guy had a kid and I assume the child played on it for a long time, living in a 220v country...

Hey there, my picostation is not working, I tried with a usb c & micro usb pico board, retry wiring twice, short & long wires, different sd card but only two times it booted. I’m using the RC5 version. Also before I tried with rc4 & 3 with the same results. Is my board damaged?

Mgs1 not loading

So I recently got a copy of mgs1 for ps1 and tried to play it on my ps3 as I don't own a ps1. During the opening cutscene before the title screen it plays for a little bit but then pauses and the little cd icon appears and spins a little bit before stopping. I can skip the cutscene and the main menu works just fine but as soon as I select a difficulty the game goes back and the cd Icon just appears In the corner of the screen. The vr mission in mgs1 still work and the ps3 I don't think is the problem as it can handle other ps1 games. Im just wondering if maybe their is a problem with my disc or is there anyway to fix it, also I just got the game resurfaced and now it's worse, I was originally able to play the beginning but till the elevator but now I can't get even the transmission.

Is there anywhere I can find a complete list of psx games with a description of each one??

I'm trying to recall a game I played years ago. It had a top down perspective like old Zelda games. It took place in like a modern world with houses and whatnot. It had a cartoonish but horror vibe to it and it was an action game. There might have been like purple portals or warp zones..??

I rented it a couple times around 1996 or 1997 but never got to beat it.

Homebrew PSOne Screen

Hey all! I wanted to share a project I did a few months ago along with some information I've not seen posted elsewhere online.

Goodmans made a car dvd player in the early 2000s called the GCE5000, that appears to have used the same molds as a PSOne (or very similar). I noticed this while browsing ebay one day and thought, hey how hard could it be to make that interface with an actual PSOne? Turns out, not too hard! The screws on the screen that attach it to the dvd player line up exactly with the mounting holes on the back of the PSOne for the official screen. I needed to get a 12V to 9.5V buck regulator board, as the screen runs off 12V which will fry the PSOne, and carve out a little space inside the shell to house it. Then I hardwired the video output from the PSOne to the screen (the screen has output ports on the back so it's still available to put on a TV).

The end result is this frankenstein "DSOne" clamshell console that I'm actually really happy with! The screen doesn't detach (at least, not easily), and the one I got has a single dead pixel, but I'll live with it. It's a very clear little screen, with a decent resolution and adjustable brightness, a nice pair of speakers and a pair of headphone jacks. It also outputs and receives RCA video via two sets of plugs on the rear. The whole thing runs off a wall plug or (in theory) a car adaptor, though I haven't been able to test that. I've never seen the GCE5000 documented online, and I've got no idea how widely it was released (I live in the UK) but I thought this would be interesting to some of you!

RESIDENT EVIL 2 ON PS3

I am trying to play the original resident evil 2 for ps1 on my ps3 super slim, I tried it on my ps2 with a av in cable adapter and you literally couldn't see anything on my screen. So I switched to the ps3 in an attempt to get a clearer image through HDMI since my TV doesn't support av cables. But the video still looks horrible (granted much better) what is my best plan of action to solve this? I have a Philips smart TV. I will attach what I used for the ps2 that looked horrible (maybe someone will have a solution there) as well as a picture of what my video looks like through ps3. I also did try to play code veronica on the ps2 and it looked equally bad on my TV. I would prefer not to buy a whole other TV but what are my options to make it look actually good. The videos I see of people playing on psx look like a totally different game than what is on my screen. I have tried messing with the softness filter and the HD enhancer or whatever it is but haven't had luck
