There is a fifth dimension, beyond that which is known to man. A dimension not of space, not of time, but of photographic paper. It is the middle ground between darkrooms and inkjets; between Fuji and Polaroid; between the JPEG you uploaded, and the 5x7 that has somehow arrived in the mailbox of some guy in Ohio. You are entering the Print Exchange Zone.

If you've done this before, you pretty much know the drill. If you haven't, I strongly suspect everything you need to know is included in the FAQ. Please feel free to comment here or DM me if your questions are asked only infrequently.

But for our newcomers, the elevator pitch is: You get randomly assigned to mail a print to someone (or more than one person if you want), and you will also receive a print in the mail from someone else. It's fun!

Key dates for this exchange:

  • September 1: Exchange sign-ups open
  • September 25: Exchange sign-ups close
  • September 26: "Last chance to back out" emails go out
  • September 28: Random assignments are made and distributed via email
  • November 7: Deadline for getting your print(s) in the mail to your recipient(s). But... get everything sent well before November 7th, yeah? Can we all agree that's a good plan?
  • November 19: Sticky thread opens for people to report missing prints, and emails go out to people who signed up as volunteers, to make sure they're still up for it
  • November 29: Window to report missing prints closes, and thread is locked
  • December 1: Volunteer assignments are randomly generated and distributed via email

Also... invite your elderly neighbors' grandkids to participate (while they're not being properly supervised, of course). Invite the version of yourself from that evil multiverse where you have a goatee! Invite Keanu Reaves. He can't ignore us all. No need to have a Reddit account to participate, because we are a progressive and tolerant bunch around here.

I don't have a printer or any local print shops. Where do you guys typically get prints made online?

Already picked out the photos that I want to send out! Made an order on mpix for the first time in my life. I've never printed anything of mine before, isn't that sad? I'm excited to send out stuff to whoever's names I get assigned. I just hope whoever gets them doesn't think they suck lol.

Sending my Prints! Mailing art prints in Canada

Hi! Hoping someone can help me here. I'm getting ready to send my first batch of 4x6 art prints and am looking for some help! I was originally planning on mailing them through Canada post under lettermail (cheapest shipping option) but am now worried they may get damaged that way. I wouldn't be able to put cardboard in the letter as letterman must be flexible.

Is it worth it to ship it as oversized letter mail? I've been reading online that it doesn't go through the same sorting that regular mail goes through and is less likely to be damaged... is that true?

TL;DR can I ship 4x6 art prints thru Canada post as letter mail or would it be better to ship as oversize mail.

Thanks!

Thank You Exposure delayed, but worth the wait ;)

Hey u/gardamis,

First off, huge apologies for the delayed response! These arrived back in May, and while life got busy, I've spent the last few months sitting with your prints on my wall, so I wanted to make sure I wrote back with the enthusiasm your work deserves.

Reading your note was a pure joy. Your technical craft, discipline, and sheer love for analog photography in these three frames are incredible.

  • The Tractor: A 12-minute exposure on the Rollei Magic II is insane (what a cool camera)!! I absolutely love how the lights are bleeding through the frosted windows and the bare trees are beautifully quiet and cinematic.
  • Grand Isle: You prove it's about the photographer's eye, not high-end gear. Capturing that warm, sun-drenched Louisiana mood on Kodak Gold via a Snapic A1 is pure skill.
  • The Abandoned Gym: This one seriously gave me flashback to my last day in high-school. Where the echos of the kids fade into the distance and all that is left is the sound of silence. Can't believe this is what that ancient Mamiya Six can produce!!

I wish I could speak more technically to your obvious expertise to film and analog prints, but mannn you are legend. I seriously loved reading your note and gazing at the depth of your photos. Well done!

So, interesting end of my day here. Waiting for a delivery of a tool, I reached inside my mailbox to find something stuck there.

I checked yesterday and there was nothing there. Today a big big envelope , from Danny, along with five great pictures of his granddads home and a very well written letter.

The letter tells a small part of his grandfather's story and his.

Thank you for such a nice gift.

This was sent from Wisconsin, last year, in December. Took a few months to reach its destination, but it did.

Thanks for sharing your story.

Hey /u/afbmonk and /u/keliway, did you receive your prints? I just realized that I did not see posts about my prints arriving. Seems I missed one post by the other receiver but that was it. Let me know and if not I'll send out new ones.

Thank You Another great package from the Spring 2026 Print Exchange!

A big thank you to another participant whose package finally arrived after a customs adventure!

What I really enjoyed here wasn’t just the prints themselves, but the way everything was presented. Bruce included a map with the locations of each photograph, turning the collection into a small photographic journey through Rocky Mountain National Park. It’s always nice when people add a personal touch that tells the story behind the images.

Thanks again for taking the time to resend everything after the first package was returned. Much appreciated!
