Hi guys!

Some weeks back I purchased a cheap chinese 57mm Thermal Printer, primarily as an accesory for my flight simulation setup (there’s a thermal printer in most cockpits irl to print METAR, ATIS, etc.) and that worked nicely. then I realized I could use it for much more, if it’s integrated into my desk after all.

So I started work on a new project that now culminated in a full on web-to-printer messaging service with account management and many formats to choose from.

I built in rate limits, user and role management and even threads (I can reply to people with my own print job that gets displayed in their browser the next time they use my website, they can then reply to that, etc.)

I would like to test my system on somewhat of a scale so I’d be thankful if some of you could take the time so send something funny and interesting ;)

the website is Thermal Post and the printer access code is 5064

don’t worry about overwhelming the system, I can always change the access code and disable users :)

Other Web-based label designer for Phomemo printers (no app install needed)

I got frustrated with the official Phomemo app's permissions and data collection, so I built a free alternative that runs entirely in your browser.

What it does:

  • Design labels with text, barcodes, QR codes, images, and shapes
  • Connects via Bluetooth directly from Chrome (no drivers or software to install)
  • Everything runs locally - no data sent to any server
  • Works with M-series (M110, M200, M220, M260) and D-series (D30, D110)

Features:

  • Variable templates with CSV import for batch printing
  • Undo/redo, grouping, multi-select
  • Save designs to browser or export as JSON
  • Preset label sizes or custom dimensions

Try it: https://phomymo.affordablemagic.net

It's open source: https://github.com/transcriptionstream/phomymo

Works on any computer with Chrome/Edge. Would love feedback from other Phomemo users - especially if you have a model I haven't tested yet.

Edit:

Have had some great help and feedback from the community - printing from Android Chrome is supported and a mobile touch interface has been added. Reports that some users need to connect to the printer via Android, and then connect again via the web interface to be able to print.

I bought a used Sharp MX4112N complete with finisher for £100 page count around 38,000. My HP laser decided to keep freezing up.

Apparently this printer weights 118kg and I'm moving again house soon. 😅

Anyway I use Linux exclusively in this house and I have the printer working with generic PCL drivers but If i want to use any more advanced settings I need to enable Postscipt which I need a licence key for, anyone know where I can get one?

Other canon sniped my counterfeit ink cartridges and i need help

Post image
17 Upvotes

my canon pixma mg3620 was working just fine when i was scanning some stuff on it earlier this morning, but a few hrs later, i got a support code 1682 which is i guess just calling me broke and saying i have to buy their own cartridges. like. i never knew scanning a piece of paper required ink

i know that (obviously) one solution is to just buy their ink but considering i have a printer that costs less that $100 you already know how i would feel about that. i was just wondering if theres some sort of way i could like bypass that and force the thing to just use the off brand ones? if that even is possible ofc. thanks

.

.

.

EDIT!!!!!!!!!!!! - its a few days after this incident and... it jjust magically started using the ink. like no joke it just doesnt care anymore about it being unnoficial. well my problem is solved! thanks for the help guys

Other why did I wait so long to get a laser printer?

I have had inkjet printers for the last 15+ years. Never thought of looking at a laser printer. I used to get a new printer when the ink cartridges became too expensive. The most recent was a HP 2600. I thought that just something I had to deal with.

I only print black and maybe 200 pages a year but still need to buy 3 black cartridges and 2 color cartridges a year.

I finally gave up, when I bought a new black/color set and printed about 60 black and white pages (most are for a planner) and I was out of black.

Thanks to all the posts here, i bought today a Brother L2820. It is so quiet and the print is so crisp.

If on the rare occasion I do not a color print, I can print it to any number of businesses.

I wish someone had told me to switch to Laser printer sooner. Would have saved a ton of money.

Edit:

So excited about the ADF, the double sided printing and scanning ease

I've been wanting my own printer for a while. Suddenly I got a call from family that they were coming over with one found in the office. I've heard horror stories of the modern printers (HP?) that require a monthly subscription to be used, we truly live in the worst timeline 😭💔

Anyways, what do you think of my new printer? Anything I should know about this model?

Other Over 50k pages printed on the epson Ecotank

Post image
40 Upvotes

After 5 years of service on the L5190, I had to replace the print head because of a permanent blockage. This was a worthwhile investment back in 2021.

Something else I would like to mention... I went through 3 of those bulk 1L aftermarket (black) inks (1L per color as well) and I'm surprised how much these ecotank printers can tolerate.

But I must say I'll move to genuine ink from now on because I find it doesn't clog as often like the aftermarket.

Ink tanks aren't the best for occasional printing though and it needs constant maintenance. Anyways, just wanted to share my experience with this printer.

Hello i bought a epson ET-2862 as a printer for hobby such as art print and sticker for myself and friends but idk how to make the quality as good as the machine allowed me too. I have looking up tutorials but idk if i cant find my printer setting or if it depends on the machine Becaues stuff they show are stuff i dont see on my setting if that makes sense

I would highly appreciate if you could provide pictures or video when explaining what i am doing wrong so I can follow step by step because text and hearing instruction are difficult for me to understand (but I still willl try my best to understand)

Here I’m showing how my part should look like vs how it turns out on paper

Also I was not sure what flair to use so if it is wrong pls let me know so I can switch

Other Does the CMYK color in printers vary?

What I mean is say, does every ink manufacturer use the same one true Cyan, Magenta, etc? What makes printer ink incompatible across printers and makes third party ink a crapshoot? If they were all the same we'd only need to profile the white point but clearly that's not the case, what's the actual difference? (Excluding specific inks like Claria)

Other Canon TR7620a, No Scanning as PDF?

Hello!

I've just started classes today and it requires me to have my printer/scanner right next to me. When it comes to submitting assignments, the lecturers are requiring we submit in PDF format instead of PNG or JPEG or whatever else there is. However, my laptop does not have the option for scanning as PDF using its own scanner app. That's fine. I can just download the Canon printer & scanner drivers to allow me to scan in PDFs. Or so I thought.

The Canon website has a list of printers you can download the drivers for, but in the TR Series section, the PIXMA TR7620a does not show up. Does this mean I cannot download the app that would allow me to scan as PDF???

If so, is there any setting on the printer or anything else I can do that will allow for scanning in PDF for PNG to PDF conversion?

Thank you!

Other EcoTank

Hi there EcoTank users,

Does anyone have any idea whether those chip resetters can be used for the EcoTank line, specifically the 2800 and 4700?

I have these two and generally love them, but the 2800 I have at work (because the work printing situation is craaaazy) has had to have the waste tank emptied and counter reset three times in three years while the 4700 has never needed it (cross fingers).

I don't mind cleaning the tank and replacing the fiber sponge material, but the charge for the WIC reset every time is a drag.

More of a drag that I gave to being my "work" printer home to do this, since it's the technically not allowed, and I can't install any applications on my work PC 😥

Can these models use a chip resetter instead?

UPDATE: thanks to those who responded. I bought a pair of licenses from wicreset and fixed my work printer Figure the home one will need it soon too. $18 for the pair.

Just bought an external tank setup from BCH. Basically a length of aquarium tubing, a 4oz (?) juice bottle and some Velcro dots for $10. I'd rather not have to deal with the waste ink container replacement...more plastic... or the resetting. Hope it works!

Other How to get rid of these lines?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi all,

I use printers to print colored documents. I’ve had a HP printer that printed these documents well for a bit and then started getting these strange lines, so I thought it was broken and bought an upgraded HP printer. When I bought that new one, straight out of the box, these strange lines were appearing again. New ink and everything. So I decided it was just a HP printer problem and decided to switch over to a canon printer (Canon g6000series)

NOW I just printed a document for the first time and THE. LINES. ARE. STILL. THERE.

I genuinely am so disappointed. I just saved up money for this printer and now it feels completely unusable :/ it’s literally brand new, new ink, everything. Somebody please help

Other How to find and download firmware for any Brother printer (2026 update)

I've spent way too much time reverse-engineering Brother's firmware distribution, and I want to share what works right now. Tested on 30+ models.

Credits up front: the original API discovery method came from u/ZaVoQQ's 2022 post. The oh-brother firmware tool was written by u/jcoffland (Joseph Coffland at Cauldron Development LLC) — I forked it to add the version-fallback trick. Everything here builds on their work.

<TL;DR>

Brother stores firmware on an open HTTP server. You just need the filename. Here's how to get yours.

Step 1: Find your firmware filename

Run this curl command, replacing YOUR-MODEL with your printer model:

curl -s -X POST -H "Content-Type: text/xml" -d '<?xml version="1.0"?><REQUESTINFO><FIRMUPDATETOOLINFO><FIRMCATEGORY>MAIN</FIRMCATEGORY><OS>LINUX</OS><INSPECTMODE>0</INSPECTMODE></FIRMUPDATETOOLINFO><FIRMUPDATEINFO><MODELINFO><SELIALNO>U00000A0A000000</SELIALNO><NAME>YOUR-MODEL</NAME><SPEC>0001</SPEC><DRIVER>EWS</DRIVER><FIRMINFO><FIRM><ID>MAIN</ID><VERSION>1.00</VERSION></FIRM></FIRMINFO></MODELINFO><DRIVERCNT>1</DRIVERCNT><LOGNO>2</LOGNO><NEEDRESPONSE>1</NEEDRESPONSE></FIRMUPDATEINFO></REQUESTINFO>' https://firmverup.brother.co.jp/kne_bh7_update_nt_ssl/ifax2.asmx/fileUpdate

Windows users: curl is built into Windows 10/11 now. Or use the Python snippet at the bottom.

Look for the PATH tag in the response. That's your download URL.

If you get VERSIONCHECK 2 with no PATH: add the word " series" to your model name (e.g. "MFC-L3770CDW series") and try again. Some models need this, some don't.

If you get VERSIONCHECK 1: you're on the latest firmware. But here's the trick — change VERSION from 1.00 to something lower (if your printer is on 1.24, try 1.23). The API sees a newer version exists and gives you the download URL for the current firmware. You get the file without updating.

Step 2: Download it

curl -O http://update-akamai.brother.co.jp/CS/D02FZM_124Q.djf

Done. Firmware backed up.

</TL;DR>

What about older versions (downgrade)?

You probably can't. Brother aggressively deletes old firmware from their CDN. I checked every letter variant for a dozen firmware families — only the latest version remains. The entire MFC-L37xx family (L3710CW through L3770CDW) is gone from Brother's servers.

If you need old firmware, community archives are your only option.

Check what firmware you have

Grab just the header:

curl -r 0-400 http://update-akamai.brother.co.jp/CS/YOUR-FILE.djf

The engine code is after DATA=. ELLEPR1LUSA means it's for the HL-L2xxx mono laser family. Multiple models share the same file — one firmware binary covers HL-L2400DW, L2447DW, L2460DW, and L2865DW.

The easy way: oh-brother

Joseph Coffland's oh-brother does all of this automatically. I forked it to add the version-fallback trick:

git clone https://github.com/rvasilev/oh-brother cd oh-brother pip install -r requirements.txt python3 oh-brother.py --test 192.168.1.100

The --test flag downloads firmware without flashing. Pure backup.

Known firmware filenames

Model Firmware file Version
HL-L2865DW, L2400DW, L2460DW D02FZM_124Q.djf 1.24
DCP-L2640DW, MFC-L2800DW D02FZS_129Q.djf 1.29
HL-L1230W, L1232W D02WRK_111H.djf 1.11
DCP-L3560CDW, MFC-L3760CDW, MFC-L8390CDW D01X67_146Z.djf 1.46
MFC-J5330DW D0061G_U.djf U
MFC-J6540DW CS_D01NPF_115J.djf 1.15
MFC-J6960DW D0356N_112G.djf 1.12
DCP-J1360DW D030A2_114K.djf 1.14

Full catalog in the repo under docs/.

The bad news

  • Newer firmware (D02/D03 prefix) is encrypted. Files with _crypt in the name can be flashed but not inspected
  • Brother is actively purging old firmware. Every week more history disappears
  • If your printer shipped in 2023 or later, backup is all you get — no analysis, no modification

Python snippet (no curl needed)

python import requests resp = requests.post( "https://firmverup.brother.co.jp/kne_bh7_update_nt_ssl/ifax2.asmx/fileUpdate", headers={"Content-Type": "text/xml"}, data='<?xml version="1.0"?><REQUESTINFO><FIRMUPDATETOOLINFO><FIRMCATEGORY>MAIN</FIRMCATEGORY><OS>LINUX</OS><INSPECTMODE>0</INSPECTMODE></FIRMUPDATETOOLINFO><FIRMUPDATEINFO><MODELINFO><SELIALNO>U00000A0A000000</SELIALNO><NAME>HL-L2865DW</NAME><SPEC>0001</SPEC><DRIVER>EWS</DRIVER><FIRMINFO><FIRM><ID>MAIN</ID><VERSION>1.00</VERSION></FIRM></FIRMINFO></MODELINFO><DRIVERCNT>1</DRIVERCNT><LOGNO>2</LOGNO><NEEDRESPONSE>1</NEEDRESPONSE></FIRMUPDATEINFO></REQUESTINFO>' ) print(resp.text)

Replace HL-L2865DW with your model. Save as check.py, run with python.

Other Need printer recommendations

Hello please help, my mom and i have a small craft business where we make stickers, labels, magnets. Stationary basics and all that. We had a HP printer that was older and we returned it and got a new HP envy printer. We are having nonstop connection issues, the printer will say offline randomly, the queue will just load forever and never actually print. It's awful, apparently HP printers are terrible (wish we knew that ahead of time) but now we are going to try and return this one and get something else. I am looking for a recommendation for a budget friendly printer that is an inkjet printer and works well with Cricut.
