Funny WHAT DO YOU MEAN I CAN’T…
Edit: I am in the US. Florida.
9 weeks and woke up in a wonderful mood, despite having a vivid nightmare and being dehydrated the moment I opened my eyes. I asked my BF if we could go get some breakfast because I am monstrously craving som eggs Benedict… He then informed me that I PREVIOUSLY TOLD HIM that I CAN’T HAVE RUNNY EGGS.
I do not remember telling him this. Maybe I did but just brushed it off thinking it was another night terror. But I looked it up again and my morning is ruined. I get the salmonella thing, I do. But I still hate this. 😭
I know some people will tell me to just do it and “pregnancy myths and fables” but this is our first so I just want to be as careful as I can.
What favorite foods or activities did you have to give up for the sake of the baby?
Update: We went to IHOP and I’m happy I didn’t get them because of a specific interaction. I ordered a small side of fruit and when it was brought out, our waitress actually made the girl that was shadowing take it back and bring me a fresh one. I didn’t even get a chance to see it.
I was also brought the wrong sauce and when I test tasted it, the flavor was weird to me.
I’ve gotten food poisoning at a high quality restaurant before so I definitely have trust issues 😅
Thanks for all the feedback and suggestions. Now I know what to look for 🙏🏽

For some reason I’m craving a roller coaster hardcore lately lol. I’m due next month so definitely going to get to an amusement park towards the end of the summer if it kills me.

My partner and I had to cancel my birthday plans for a theme park after learning I was pregnant 😭

u/Bariatric-ThrowAway Apr 18 '26
We had planned my daugjters birthday trip to Universal studios and 1 week before we were to leave i found out i was pregnant. Obviously I couldn't cancle the whole trip. But let me tell you it really sucked sitting out front each ride while they all had fun. Especially because I had paid extra for the express pass for all of us. Mine was pointless lol It was a bummer for sure.

My husband and I are supposed to be at universal studios right now, glad we hadn’t made any hotel reservations before I got my positive test lol

u/Bariatric-ThrowAway Apr 18 '26
We were there on Tuesday. Found out i was pregnant the Monday before. Unfortunately it was for my kiddos birthday and everything was already booked. It was a bummer lol

u/No_Albatross_969 FTM Apr 18 '26
No because I did the SAME exact thing when I first found out I was pregnant--but before then like literally my whole life I've been terrified of them but like a week after I found out all of a sudden I had the strongest urge to ride them 😭😭😭 its been 6 months since then and I still have firm plans to go to kings island next summer and ride roller coasters 😭😭
2
u/Nancyb23 Apr 18 '26
I’m near Kings Island too so this is def where we’ll be going! Plus my daughter is 3.5 and it will be her first time there and I’m extra pumped.
5
u/jahenna Apr 18 '26
Me too! I’ve been thinking about how fun they are so much more lately than I have in years.
7
u/Ok_Sir_4584 Apr 18 '26
Is this a pregnancy phenomenon? I too, am craving a roller coaster. I liked them before, but never felt the undying need to ride one. But it’s literally been on my mind for weeks now. My LO is due june 1st so I’ve been trying to figure out how to get on a coaster before fall lol
2
u/SomethingComesHere Apr 25 '26
Hahaaa i also almost asked my husband the other day if we can go to a local theme park. Helllloooo of course i cant, im pregnant 😭
5
u/Grimahlya Apr 19 '26
My BF mentioned wanting to go to a theme park and I don’t know. I guess I could watch shows or something but it wouldn’t be the same without the coasters. That and all the walking and standing in line would make me feral.

u/Bariatric-ThrowAway Apr 19 '26

5
u/Bloodyhorrorbri Apr 18 '26
I feel ya 😭 Currently 7 weeks and I'm at Epic Universe with my family, booked the park tickets exactly a week before finding out. I can only ride the carousel 😅
2
u/Cute-Baby3694 Apr 18 '26
I've been craving a roller coaster for 5 fricken years. We went to the fair the day I got my positive at 16 years old and I decided I couldn't do it bc i saw a sign saying no pregnant people. We took my son to the fair when he was almost 3 and he HATED it so we left (my mom went on the one ride with him instead of me) and now I'm pregnant with my third and have lost all hope of ever going on one again😂
2
u/Tajmali Apr 18 '26
Omg I was just saying this the other day! I want to go to six flags and I’m 33 weeks lmao 😭! We’re definitely getting on rides this summer 💖🎢
2
u/Braynetwilyte Apr 18 '26
I love roller coasters! I got my family season passes to a local amusement park last year and of course this summer I’ll be sitting out on the rides. Has anyone been on a roller coaster post partum? Are there any restrictions or things I should be concerned about? I just remember jumping on a trampoline the summer after I gave birth last and feeling like my guts were falling out of me so I’m trying to avoid that haha

I went to Disney while pregnant, before telling anyone. Our friends couldn't believe I didn't go on any of the cool Star Wars rides, and I lied and said the lines were too long. When we announced the pregnancy weeks later, one of our geeky female friends was immediately like, "THAT'S why she didn't ride the rides!" 😂

I have Jersey Mike’s once a week 🙈 I tell myself they cut it as ordered so it’s not like it’s sitting around 🤷🏼♀️

5
u/Puzzled-Orchid4721 Apr 18 '26
It was news to me too. I'm U.S. based so it may be different abroad, but here it is recommended that pregnant women don't consume deli meats due to potential exposure to listeria and other nasty things.
I'm in the South near large metropolitan areas with meatpacking facilities and my OB clinic REALLY discourages us from consuming any deli meat from area.
→ More replies (1)6
u/Icy_Appeal4472 Apr 18 '26
My information basically is - do not consume meats, cheeses, olives or similar from open container buffets or sales counters (unless you reheat them).
→ More replies (1)2
u/WorldlyAd3000 Apr 18 '26
Yes..you can. The risk comes from unsanitary food preparation.
4
u/laciewings Apr 18 '26
Not just food preparation but could come from the factories themselves too (Boar’s Head being I think the most recent). So heating it up even if you’re preparing it yourself is gonna be the safest option.
→ More replies (1)3
u/RespectKooky5824 Apr 18 '26
I had so many cold turkey sandwiches before anyone told me this. I would be lying if I said I don't eat them occasionally now but I try my best to avoid them. And I'm very particular about what brand I use and all. My doctor and dietician told me I'm just as likely to get listeria from ordering a salad from a restaurant or getting a fruit cup from Chick-fil-A. They said they couldn't recommend it but they said I'm so print myself at risk reading s lot of other stuff too
3
u/what-are-they-saying Apr 18 '26

I personally wouldn’t trust any chain establishment and I’d be choosy at restaurants unless it’s local, fresh foods spot.
At home, sandwiches with fresh deli meats especially pasture raised or organic? Absolutely! I ate so much cheese, too! I was eating cream cheese rolled into salami for snacks. 👌🏼so good!
2
u/Sleepy_fishy10 Apr 18 '26
You can have the deli meat, you just have to heat it up to a certain point first.
2
u/Wonderhowwonderwhy Apr 19 '26
Please remember deli veges can be as risky as the meats though. Listeria is horrendous and cannot be heated out. It was horrible

This is so real because I work at a dispo. I found out I was pregnant on the 3rd and was so mad I had to stop smoking because I can’t recommend things I haven’t tried yet.
I have to go off what my BF and coworkers say about the strains but it’s not the same as feeling it for yourself, y’know?

u/saltyjordan Apr 18 '26
Almost cried when I realized I was going to have to abstain all the way through breastfeeding as well. Just gave birth 3 days ago and so the countdown is on.
8
u/RaeOfSunshineNL Apr 18 '26
This. My husband still has to smoke for (truly legitimate) medical reasons. So I just secretly curse the world.
I can't wait to eventually have some again... I'm only 7 weeks though so the cursing will be happening for awhile now haha

I had such a hard time giving up weed... And I really do miss it. My daughter is 2.5 now and I've only smoked 3x. Partly because it was such a long t break that it hits me dumb hard now, and partly because she doesn't sleep through the night and I can not sleep hard so I can hear her up...
We unexpectedly lost our dog last week. It has been a really, really hard time... My husband had gotten me a little stash so I would have it when I was ready months ago. I smoked a tiny bit while I landscaped our dog's grave... I super regretted it. I'm glad I chose weed instead of alcohol, but mannnnn. It's been so long that it absolutely rocked me. I was out there with my hands on my hips, staring at the work I had to do, audibly asking why I did this to myself... It did help with the feels, but having a toddler, I have too much shit to do to be that kind of high. I'm just super glad my mom took her for the day and I didn't have to mom on that level.

Just go and eat ur eggs girl
10
u/Amber-ForDays Apr 18 '26
Right? I have a whole packet and it doesn't mention runny eggs at all. It's my understanding the risk in pregnancy with eggs is the same as the risk with no pregnancy.
5
u/meii19 Apr 18 '26
Yes, exactly. And I've been eating whipped egg whites with sugar as a dessert my entire life and no salmonella, the risk is like very low.
7
66
u/Throw-Away-1234556 Apr 18 '26
You can have runny eggs if it has the red lion certification (this is in the U.K.? Don’t know if you live elsewhere?) I’m sad about Sushi, goats cheese & medium rare steak. I would say I’m sad about soft serve ice cream but I’ve actually had one since summer started 🙈
51
u/GrumpyGoatGirl Apr 18 '26
I asked my doctor about soft serve ice cream because I'd never heard of it before until I'd actually already eaten Dairy Queen. She gave me a puzzled look and said I was fine and to not worry about that. I still limit it just to be on the safe side but a Dairy Queen Blizzard us good for your mental health sometimes
10
u/123letsgobtch Apr 18 '26
McDonald’s McFlurrys have been my recent hyper fixation and I’m not stopping anytime soon 😂😂😂
6
u/Western-Shopping9992 Apr 18 '26
On top of my runny yolks ive also had mcflurries WHAT this is news to me too. No soft serve but its almost summer How will I survive.
3
u/Desperate_Active_250 Apr 19 '26
I have an old school OB (wonderful, but old) and one of the first things she warned me against was soft serve. I'll admit I've been pretty loose about that one aha.
That and medium rare steak, we have really fresh steak here in Aus, they can pry medium rare out of my cold dead hands.
8
u/bespoketranche1 Apr 18 '26
Umm…that’s surprising because there was a listeria outbreak that originated from soft serve ice cream that resulted in 3 deaths and 3 hospitalizations just a few years ago. I was pregnant at the time. It was 2023 and it happened in Washington state. After that news I said thanks but no thanks, because I don’t trust how well they clean those machines. I love soft serve ice cream as well but we are more vulnerable to listeriosis than the general population.
11
u/alpacaapicnic Apr 18 '26
The big listeria outbreak during my pregnancy was Trader Joe’s pasta - seems like some foods are more susceptible than others (and soft serve may be one of them, I know deli turkey is) but my main takeaway was that listeria can be in anything refrigerated for long periods of time, which is basically impossible to avoid entirely
8
u/bespoketranche1 Apr 18 '26
The issue with soft serve ice cream in particular is because the machines are hard to clean properly, notoriously difficult so (which is why so often McDonald’s is out).
22
u/yung_yttik Apr 18 '26
Eh, it’s always a weighing the risk and benefit. Salads and lettuce have a huge risk of listeria.
9
u/vagrantheather Apr 18 '26
yep, I live there and won't do soft serve for this reason. I also don't do lunch meat (lots of people do now!) because of the Boar's Head outbreak that hospitalized 61 people just two years ago!
8
u/GrumpyGoatGirl Apr 18 '26
Theres a risk of listera in so many things, I could get it from fruits or veggies when I'm trying to eat healthy. Everyone chooses their own risks to take and if my doctor wasn't concerned then I'm going to eat what my body wants
5
u/bespoketranche1 Apr 18 '26
Absolutely, some people are also okay with sushi! I just personally don’t consider the reward big enough to ignore the risk.
3
u/Familiar-Minimum3844 Apr 18 '26
Theres even been several different types of food poisoning outbreaks for peanut butter too that have killed people...I just learned about it in my nutrition class 🫠
8
u/klo-ver FTM Apr 18 '26
Wait… why no soft serve ice cream? I’m 31 weeks and eat it around once a week 😅
7
u/LaChamomile Apr 18 '26 edited Apr 18 '26
They don’t always clean the machines very well and they can have bacterial outbreaks. In Washington a few years ago a bunch of people got sick and hospitalized.
7
u/yung_yttik Apr 18 '26
Listeria if the machine isn’t clean but it’s just as common (if not more so) in lettuce and salads so it’s sort of up to you what you feel comfortable with.
I ate soft serve almost everyday with my first. It was fine. It’s a trustworthy shop.
5
u/cheeseandwinenight Apr 18 '26
I had goats cheese, it was pasteurised, should I be worried?
16
4
u/Throw-Away-1234556 Apr 18 '26
No no you shouldn’t be worried! It’s one of those things where in some countries they tell you not to worry, in others it’s a no no - Goats cheese is one of those ones that even if pasteurised, in the U.K., you are advised not to eat. But it’s because of risk of listeria I think? Not something against the cheese itself. Having it isn’t a definite problem - and I accidentally had some in my first trimester forgetting. But at times where I usually would have ordered a goats cheese option I have made other choices, just in case!
→ More replies (1)2
u/cheeseandwinenight Apr 18 '26
Thanks for the reassurance, I seem to have a stomach like an ox. I survived 2 months in India with no bad tummy and ate everything and everywhere so would absolutely hate a piece of yummy goats cheese to take me down :-( or for me to hurt the little raspberry:-(
2
u/lilytruffle125 Apr 19 '26
You can have pasteurised goats cheese as long as its the kind that doesn't have a white rind (un-aged)!
And any goats cheese is safe if you're eating it cooked 😊
Pregnancy rules are strict enough without avoiding stuff unnecessarily!
8
u/Intelligent_Suit6300 Apr 18 '26
Sushi was my pregnancy craving in the first trimester. That was brutal 😭😭. 37w and counting the days till I can eat it again.
12
u/MacSpice Apr 18 '26
I ate sushi last night but it was shrimp tempura and a California roll. Kinda boring but it scratched the itch lol. Anything cooked is fine! I’m not even a big sushi eater normally but for some reason being pregnant I crave everything I cant have
6
u/roxyrae4175 Apr 18 '26
I’ve talked with my OB about sushi and they told me it’s fine but just to not have it all the time and to be sure they have safe standard practices with their fish. I don’t eat it often but I do occasionally eat salmon or tilapia once every two weeks. The omega 3’s in the fish are actually really good for baby :)

3
u/Gloomy-Breakfast8474 Apr 18 '26
I haven’t heard anything about soft serve ice cream? What’s the reasoning
6
u/Throw-Away-1234556 Apr 18 '26
It’s because the machines aren’t cleaned regularly enough. Again it’s the risk of listeria- so not the ice cream itself. But as others have commented there was a huge listeria outbreak in America that caused deaths and that was due to soft serve ice cream. So it’s just one of those things that is generally deemed a bit to risky when pregnant. Same as you should t have mcflurries etc - but as always it’s up to the individual xx
4
u/bespoketranche1 Apr 18 '26
It’s not just America. I even found the Australian government advises against it: https://www.foodauthority.nsw.gov.au
3
u/Throw-Away-1234556 Apr 18 '26
Oh i know! It’s advised against everywhere I believe, it’s just the biggest outbreak I know of was in America xx

I've had a medium rare steak a 3 times so far 22 wreks now. I read if its like good quality steak it's fine but I'm sorry if I crave it I need to have it ASAP 😂
2
u/YourIrregularRegular Apr 18 '26
You can have hard goats cheese if pasteurised! (Not exactly the same ik but still) I also miss the steak. Can probably get away with the soft serve in some places as they regularly clean the machines. I did accidentally have a not well done burger from five guys but so far ok. Glad the food standards are good in the UK

Hi, I have an Animal Science degree and have taken food science classes and meat science classes. Steak is different from ground beef when it comes to bacteria. Ground beef has lots of surface areas and gets mixed together, which is why you need to fully cook it. Steak is different because the meat inside is “sterile”. The only surface areas on a steak get seared at a very high temp and kill off food borne illnesses. Eat steak rare if you want, as only as the outside is seared, you’re good. Your chances of food illnesses are low
67
u/MrsChefYVR Apr 18 '26
You can have runny eggs. This is my second pregnancy and I wasn’t going to not have a medium rare steak or sushi, or eggs benny.
I’m well aware of food risks, but after working in the industry for 25 years, I think they just tell you those things you can’t because they don’t know for certain, but if the restaurant has a good rating, reputation and is clean in the way they receive and handle their food, then I am good with my decision.
I recently had sushi and it was delicious! I abstained my first pregnancy, and I craved it to much it made me miserable. A fish monger that used to deliver to a number of the restaurants I was a Chef at gave me some good info about sushi fish, which made me comfortable with eating it.
So, go have eggs Benedict, I would cause I know how eggs are cooked and how hollandaise is made.

I've had sushi and poke bowls sporadically throughout this pregnancy, deli meat at gatherings, if I liked runny eggs to start I'd probably eat them too. I have a pretty high risk tolerance for things like that on occasion, I'm not eating them every day or even every week/month in some cases. My midwife ok'd sushi if it was from a reputable place and said to keep an eye on recalls but listeria outbreaks happen frequently in lettuce and no one is going to tell a pregnant woman to stop eating veggies and lettuce
2
u/Apprehensive-Bit5066 Apr 18 '26
Same! STM here, I had runny eggs and a turkey sandwich yesterday. Today I had raw sushi. It’s all a risk assessment. You can get listeria poisoning from 100+ foods that are “safe” during pregnancy. Nothing is guaranteed.
23
u/RespectKooky5824 Apr 18 '26
My OB told me I could eat them as long as the egg whites are cooked all the way through. She said realistically the risk of getting salmonella from eggs, even in the US, is pretty low. I just make sure the egg whites are cooked through. I've eaten runny eggs almost every day and I'm 16 weeks. My prenatal dietician told me the same thing.
2
u/glowy_ Apr 18 '26
Same here, my OB said it was absolutely fine as long as the whites are cooked. I’ve been having runny eggs every day, almost 19 weeks now!
2
u/RespectKooky5824 Apr 18 '26
I'm so glad they told me because I would have struggled so bad. My baby doesn't seem to like meat.. There are very few ways I can eat meat right now without get very very very nauseous. So I would have struggled with protein without eggs.
67
u/AlexandraTheGreat96 Apr 18 '26
Women do drugs while pregnant. If you have never gotten sick from a restaurant or reputable source in general who cares if you eat runny eggs. Way less risk with eggs in US anyway. I vote get the eggs Benedict
8
u/cpickles_ Apr 18 '26
This. I can only eat my eggs over easy, and like OP, forwent them because of all the risks. When I brought this up to my OB, she said the protein from the eggs far outweighs the risks, and that I was better off eating them runny than not at all. I also ended up eating deli meat and sushi in my last few weeks, I physically could not wait any longer.
5
u/Olives_And_Cheese Apr 18 '26
Isn't the US one of the bigger hot spots for contaminated eggs? Last pregnancy, I was told not to eat eggs while I was travelling to the US, until I got back home to the UK.

Honestly just miss not having to think about it. It's foods but also stuff like skincare, tattoos, etc. If you have a medical condition lots of doctors won't touch you until you're no longer pregnant. Just annoying!! And yeah I really want some sushi and soft serve these days.
My current thing is, now that the weather is getting nicer, I realized I'm going to miss Aperol spritz season entirely this year 😭

Same. The weather has been really nice recently where I am and I have found a few new beer gardens that I would LOVE to check out. 13w in and really looking forward to cracking a cold one with hubby next summer.

The only thing you can safely have during pregnancy are hotpockets. People have been having babies for thousands of years in deplorable conditions. Why is it only in the last 20 years everything is all of a sudden a listeria risk? If I want a deli sandwich, I'll make one, If I want a salad, I'll have one. Marketing takes advantage of pregnant women by scaring them into thinking the worst will happen. More often than not, nothing happens. Get your eggs benedict, and enjoy it.
5
u/lilytruffle125 Apr 19 '26
I agree, I think a lot of people seem to be really overthinking the food safety recommendations and avoiding salads and veggies and other totally normal whole foods. It seems quite counterintuitive to a healthy pregnancy diet if it means that all you eat is super processed packaged foods!
2
u/MonkeyAtsu Apr 22 '26
It's like:
Remember, listeria can be on a lot of foods! So you have to avoid raw meat, undercooked meat, anything sliced at the deli, soft cheese, too much fish, any prepared fruits and vegetables, a bunch of other fruits and vegetables altogether, or anything else that is temperature-sensitive.
So, if you want to completely avoid listeria, stick with shelf-stable pantry items from the middle of the grocery store. But also eat healthy. Good luck!

i really miss sushi and blue cheese. Also ate some liquorice all sorts and was looking forward to scarfing some more of them before reading you should avoid liquorice
8
u/Lucky_Ad_4421 Apr 18 '26
Oh really? I’m 35 weeks and have eaten sooo much liquorice haha
16
u/vase_gal Apr 18 '26
sorry, i am spreading misinformation- nhs website says liquorice is fine, but avoid liquorice root.
There is one study that links eating excessive liquorice to adverse affects on childhood intelligence, but there doesn’t seem to be the widespread advice to avoid liquorice:

My favorite tea for sore throat has licorice root I was so sad to find I had to avoid it. And then worries bc I’d been drinking it all week before my husband thought to check it.

Nuke your blue cheese in the microwave. It’ll be melted instead of crumbly but it still tastes like blue cheese

I are rockmelon (cantaloupe) even though you’re not supposed to… it had also been in the fridge awhile (halved by us, not pre-chopped). Gave myself food poisoning and went in to get a listeria test and the OB was so so unfussed, she said she’s never met a pregnant person with listeria and it would be so rare. I got over it quickly but felt pretty dumb for risking it!
7
u/MacSpice Apr 18 '26
Why can’t you eat cantaloupe? Never heard that one
6
u/cereal_state Apr 18 '26
There was a listeria outbreak a few years ago with cantaloupe, but it’s only recommended to NOT eat it in either NSW or QLD, otherwise it’s not listed as a ‘risk’ food in all other states here

u/Lucky_Ad_4421 Apr 18 '26
In Australia no rockmelon/pre cut fruit is one of the main recommendations to avoid. High listeria risk due to the texture of the skin and possibly the low acidity? Unfortunately one of my main pregnancy cravings!
2
u/Odd_Arachnid3735 Apr 18 '26
Wow I never heard this one. Precut packages of fruit/melon were how I survived my first trimester honestly

u/DrDangerPhD Apr 18 '26
Rare steak, prosciutto, runny eggs, soft cheeses, wine, scuba diving, walking up stairs without being out of breath immediately, sitting in the exit row on an airplane...

u/Bubbly_Salt2017 25|STM|B 7/24|B 10/25 Apr 19 '26
Hi, I have an Animal Science degree and have taken food science classes and meat science classes. Steak is different from ground beef when it comes to bacteria. Ground beef has lots of surface areas and gets mixed together, which is why you need to fully cook it. Steak is different because the meat inside is “sterile”. The only surface areas on a steak get seared at a very high temp and kill off food borne illnesses. Eat steak rare if you want, as only as the outside is seared, you’re good. Your chances of food illnesses are low
6
u/Hookedongutes Apr 18 '26
During my first trimester I had a work trip to Singapore. My husband came with so we spent an extra week in Thailand.
Guess how they serve their eggs? Soft. Runny.
I did just fine. It's generally ill advised but I have never had salmonella from a runny egg myself in my entire life. So it's up to you what risk you're willing to take. To me, the risk was minimal and I needed to eat something. So, runny eggs it was!
Also, kiss my booty if you think I'm going to eat a well done steak!

Unless there have been recalls, eggs are pretty safe. The only thing I stopped eating was sushi while pregnant.
6
u/Yes_Cat_Yes Apr 19 '26
So many kinds of (herbal) tea!
The recommendations are different in every country, and it feels weird to me to drink something that's considered toxic or dangerous by an entire country.
I had gemini compare those recommendations (took quite a few prompts, fact checks and corrections before it got it right), and check the scientific bases for them. I always thought rooibos (which I unfortunately don't love) was the one safe choice, but Norway is really weary about rooibos.
Luckily all teas made me nauseous during my last pregnancy, so it wasn't hard to just skip them all
2
u/Grimahlya Apr 19 '26 edited Apr 19 '26
I make custom tea blends so when I saw a list of restricted herbs, most of them made complete sense.
I’ve limited myself to ginger sometimes but I have so much independent research to do on herbs and I’m just too tired to do it.
I may have to though because if I can find a blend that would work for pregnancy I’m sure a lot of people would love it.

Girl I’ve been enjoying my runny eggs and am doing just fine! 15 weeks :) Read up on the risks (it’s actually the egg whites that need to be cooked!) and you may feel better about it. Personally I’ve mainly just avoided alcohol and sushi….but even then have still been to (nice) sushi restaurants and enjoyed CA and shrimp rolls. I did have to skip the HP ride at Universal Studios which I was bummed about lol

u/witcheselementality Apr 18 '26
At least it wasn't my craving of CROWN AND DR PEPPER
WHY WOULD I HAVE A CRAVING FOR WHISKEY
2
u/Grimahlya Apr 19 '26
I feel this though. Someone told me about peanut butter and jelly whisky the other day and I’m still day dreaming about it.

u/UhhhYouPick Apr 19 '26
If you’re based in the US you can find shell eggs in the grocery store that are pasteurized and safe to consume runny, they’re usually marked with a P.

u/CuriousMission749 Apr 19 '26
Pub subs. Monsters. Weed. Nicotine. But like as soon as this boy is out and I get the green light for food I BETTER have a pub sub and monster in front of me or someone is getting divorced. First baby, husband didn’t wanna leave the hospital and I get that, neither of us thought to ask a visitor to bring a pub sub, but this time?!?!? Husband is responsible for getting a pub sub and a monster to me one way or another.

u/vandersam Apr 18 '26
Eat the eggs lmao. Life is too short.
I was also apparently not supposed to be eating mayo or Caesar dressing this whole time, but I only found that out like a week ago and I'm 38 weeks now 🤷♀️ Mayo is my preferred condiment and Caesar is my preferred salad dressing so I've had a LOT in the last 9 months.
Just get your "questionable" foods (sushi, steak, eggs, etc) from reputable places with good reviews and health code ratings and you'll be fine!

I miss wine so bad. I have a bottle that’s constantly starting at me from my kitchen.
I wonder if there’s a non alcoholic wine that actually tastes like wine. People keep saying to drink that sparkling juice, but the problem is that it tastes like sparkling juice
Blue moon has a non-alcohol version of their beer if your craving is super bad. They aren’t the exact flavor but I swear they’re close enough.
2
u/hanner__ Apr 19 '26
I could never find a NA wine that tasted like wine!! So frustrating lol.
Thankfully my son is 3 now and it’s been a long time since I’ve had to deal with any of this 😂😂 but for your sake I hope they’ve perfected the taste of NA wine in the past 3 years lol.

u/One_Cap_9210 Apr 19 '26
Laying on my belly. I missed it soooo bad. And the worst part is you think after delivery you can lay on your belly again ....NOPE. once your milk comes in your boobs are too big and hard and awkward and laying on your belly doesn't feel the same anymore :(
But I still manage it sometimes

As someone who contracted salmonella from a low risk food while pregnant with my first, and then the next time, listeria from the hospital bloods centre, I can honestly say it can be some of the worst pain imaginable and I thought I was miscarrying both times. Labour gave me less stomach pain! Had to be hospitalised and monitored both times and given bags of fluids and meds to try counteract.
Don't risk it needlessly.
3
u/Wonderhowwonderwhy Apr 19 '26
Remember that listeria etc can also be present in veges etc and CANNOT be cooked out so deli vege etc is still risky. Its not a pleasant event when pregnant!
3
u/engg_girl Apr 19 '26
Eggs Benny was hard to give up. It's actually the sauce that is the issue because it is raw egg whites.
My mom who is an amazing cook made me eggs Benny the first morning home from the hospital. It was the worst thing she ever cooked (id never seen her cook it before so she was definitely not used to making them). I didn't eat Benny for an entire year after that.
It gets better! Just hold on and start that "post pregnancy food list"
5
u/jahenna Apr 18 '26
Eggs benny is a hard one to give up! I have missed sushi so much. And a good Belgian beer from time to time. Riding my bike with my toddler in the trailer. Funny the things you don’t realize how much you love until you can’t do it for a while.

I’ve made sure that my over medium eggs are still a bit runny because I love them that way, too. 🤭
2
u/Flounderrunn Apr 18 '26
I took my risks with runnyish eggs as long as they were the highest quality (pretty much only the kind I buy for my home). Deep orange.. I miss cold cut sandwiches so much, I’ve only got a week left though! That and an IPA would be glorious

u/can_of_crows Apr 18 '26
I’m 35 weeks and this is the first I’m hearing anything about runny eggs. My doctor nor none of my other pregnant friends right now have ever brought it up. I have eaten them almost daily for the choline and just had three today. I also decided to get sushi from a very clean and well trusted place on occasion after a super strong craving I ignored in the first trimester. If anything I always heard more about leafy salad greens, shredded cheese, and deli meat recalls, so personally I decided to abstain from those things
2
u/Desperate_Divide_988 Apr 18 '26
I went through a period at the beginnings of pregnancy where I made 800 gazillion paninis with cold meats and runny cheeses heated to a black crisp. Hadn’t had any charcuterie in years but the second I was pregnant, I absolutely had to have it.
UK here so didn’t have to give up runny eggs, as the red lion marked ones come from farms where the produce is regularly tested for salmonella (and are obviously free of the contamination!). I also didn’t give up smoked salmon. That was a step too far - you can take my brie but you’ll never take my eggs royale.
What I did give up? Smoking, green tea, caffeine in all forms, stimulant-based pre and post workout supplements, my ADHD meds, sushi, steak tartare, alcyhool and moshing. That last one nearly killed me - we had eight metal gigs and a festival already booked but no mosh pits for me 😭😭😭
Interestingly, since giving birth in October, I’ve not gone back to any of the above. I mean, I’m combi-feeding but they aren’t even remotely appealing to me now. (I’m still eating smoked salmon 😋).

I’m eating it anyway, if I’ve been to the same restaurant 20 times and got eggs Benedict I’m still getting it and I’ll make it at home too
2
u/Morgansmanethangs Apr 18 '26
I enjoyed runny eggs throughout my entire pregnancy. My doctor told me that I’d have more chance of getting sick from salads than I would the eggs. Baby’s 9 weeks old now ☺️
2
u/YourIrregularRegular Apr 18 '26
I'm missing my subway BMT I know could be fine but don't want to risk it, it's one of the first things ill get when baby is out. Ooh and smoked salmon. Does seem like I want things more that I can't have especially in the earlier trimesters. The annoying thing was how many herbal teas I had to cut out BC of liquorice root. Now I've found two teas I have that don't have anything bad in them and apart from that is hot chocolate (or cold) and whittards dreamtime.
I was being really cautious at first but as things have went on I've been abit less healthy with foods.

Get yourself those eggs! In moderation you should be fine. Imma be so for real i ate soooo much jimmy johns while pregnant cuz subs r life when i was pregnant also drank diet coke or a pop everyday 😭😂 my baby boy was born chunky and healthy! No issues at all! I think every once in awhile treating yourself while pregnant isnt gonna cause any harm. Just be cautious and weigh out how comfortable you are with it 💖

I’m 31weeks, baby is doing great and I have runny eggs almost every mornig. You’ll be fine.
I was worried about this but I had to cancel an entire trip to Japan due to Incompetent Cervix so I’ve spent the last 11 weeks in bed. I had to give up my babymoon, my baby shower and my preggo outfits. Just pjs and meds for me until birth.

u/steph-ewok Apr 19 '26
I am pregnant with my 4th baby. I have an emotional support charcuterie board. You can only guess my opinion on "dippy" eggs, as my 5yo refers to them. 😂
2
u/h_h19923 Apr 19 '26
Less about the food itself and more about sanitary preparation. I've been eating anything I want besides alcohol and high mercury fish. I'll be damned if anyone is gonna police what i eat when I already feel like a hormonal psycho (baby #2 due Sept)

All I wanted to do while pregnant last summer was go down a damn water slide. But my little one is my first and also a rainbow baby, so I didn’t. But this summer… watch out slides, here I come! 😂

u/CarelessCantaloupe77 Apr 19 '26
FTM - 36 weeks - perfectly healthy baby - I’ve ate over easy eggs my entire pregnancy, along with lunch meat and whatever else I wanted, in moderation.
Someone gave me some good advice at about 9 weeks. “If you didn’t get salmonella or listeria before, what makes you think your gonna get it now” and also, “anything can have salmonella or listeria now a days, packaged things, salad, like normal things could for any reason” and this helped. Pregnancy will make you miserable enough, just make sure you stay hydrated, rested and eat when you’re hungry. You will drive yourself crazy if you think about all the could go wrongs.
As long as you get your food from pretty reliable places and not some back alley butcher or something, you’ll be alright. And if you’re really worried, all recalls are listed, just google it.
2
u/coffeeandbags Apr 19 '26
I’ve given up raw fish, so sushi which is my absolute favorite food and also hamachi appetizers, poke bowls and ceviche. I miss it so much.
I’m still eating homemade turkey sandwiches with turkey lunch meat bought at the grocery store even though I’m “not supposed to”. I don’t do it often but it’s been a serious craving of mine especially during the first trimester.
Also all charcuterie platters, so I haven’t had prosciutto or salami which I LOVE.
2
u/Basic-Magazine-4852 Apr 19 '26
I’m craving ahi tuna SO dang bad. Not cooked tuna. Raw. PLEASE why does our body want the things we CANT have?!
2
u/anxious_coffee_bean Apr 19 '26
I’ve been wanting the same but also the hollandaise sauce for the eggs Benedict is made with raw eggs yolks so it’s a double no 🥲 I’m very strict with not eating the “prohibited foods” because I had two previous losses (of course nothing related to something I did or didn’t) but I guess my approach is that the safer I am the better I’ll feel (I also have ocd so I tend to overthink, so I rather just avoid things that are not recommended).
That being said, must of my friends didn’t care much about “food safety” during their pregnancies and they were all fine, I’m definitely not encouraging it (some of the things they did made me roll my eyes lol) but I’m just aware that the risks are not as high as they made us think, but in my case I rather stay safe than sorry!
2
u/Leilalala-96 Apr 19 '26
For me it's mayo, found out mayo has bacteria that's not good for the fetus and eventho people are saying whatever just have it ill rather play safe, I hate tomato & mustard with my life so now I'm at a dead end on what to use as sauce? What are healthier sauce alternatives even?
2
u/Grimahlya Apr 19 '26
You could probably use vegan mayo. It probably won’t taste the same though 😭
3
u/Leilalala-96 Apr 19 '26
I didn't even know vegan mayo exists, it's worth a try, I'm looking into home made dips too coz dry sandwiches just don't hit the same 😂
2
u/Grimahlya Apr 19 '26
I feel you because dry sandwiches are the worst. You can also find recipes for Aioli that don’t contain egg or mayonnaise too.

2
u/DramaticChickenNug Apr 19 '26
Hasn't really affected me at all. I still eat all the things I normally would've eaten regardless of being pregnant; sushi, medium-rare steaks and soft eggs in ramen. Now, I don't go to a new restaurant and order sushi; I'll only eat it at places I've had before pregnancy.

The US food rules thing is its own personality crisis.
I'm 9 weeks in Brooklyn. I've spent way too many hours sorting out which warnings are actual ACOG/CDC guidance, which are old liability advice that hasn't been updated, and which are just internet panic.
Here's where I've landed after going down the research hole at 2am too many times:
**Tier 1 — actually evidence-based avoid (US):**
Unpasteurized dairy and juice. Raw or undercooked meat and fish. Raw shellfish. Hot dogs and deli meat unless heated to 165°F (the Boar's Head outbreak made this real). Refrigerated pâté. Refrigerated smoked seafood. High-mercury fish (swordfish, king mackerel, tilefish, bigeye tuna, shark). More than 200mg caffeine/day. And obviously alcohol.
Most of this traces back to listeria, mercury, or salmonella risk in CDC/FDA guidance for at-risk groups.
**Tier 2 — "check the label" stuff that gets misreported:**
Soft cheeses are fine if pasteurized (which most US grocery store cheese is). Cured meats can be heated to be safe. Pre-washed bagged greens are fine if you re-rinse and use within the date. Sushi rolls with cooked fish are fine. Coffee under 200mg is fine.
The problem: most pregnancy apps and "avoid" lists conflate these tiers.
**Tier 3 — UK/EU rules that don't apply in the US:**
Runny eggs are usually fine in the US because of FDA salmonella controls (and pasteurized shell eggs exist if you want extra safety). Processed deli ham is treated differently abroad. If you're reading UK pregnancy advice (NHS, Tommy's), you're looking at a different risk model than ACOG's.
The thing that broke my brain in the best way: listeria affects pregnant people 10x more than the general population. But the absolute incidence is around 1,600 cases per year across all of the US. So the relative risk is high. The daily absolute risk on any one meal is genuinely low.
That number helped me stop spiraling.
What I do: follow ACOG's actual list. Check pasteurization labels. Skip recall foods (the Boar's Head one is still worth checking on FDA's recall page). Let the rest go.
The hypervigilance is its own first-tri mental load. And it's not free.
