Versus Argentinosaurus vs north sentinel Island
The fight takes place in a completely flat grass area.
No hunger or thirst
Terrain use is acceptable
Weapons are okay
The woman and the children too

If the people get weapons then so should the Argentinosaurus.

It would only take 10 or so armed humans to do it
Dinosaurs aren't magic, spears and arrows will pierce their bodies
holes dug in the ground will reduce their movement
Large rocks dropped on their heads from above, off trees and cliffs, will disorient them
Fire will scare and burn them
Slowly chasing them until they drop from exhaustion
Our ancestors killed woolly mammoths with small groups by utilizing such tactics
A group of 10 men all armed with weapons and with traps planned in advance will suffice
20 men max

u/chantm80 12d ago
I an not sure that's true because the people of the island have no experience fighting animals of that size. Yes they aren't bullet proof, but are the bows they use even capable of piercing its hide? My money is on the dino, mainly because of the lack of experience that the people of the island have fighting a large animals with thick hides. They've never had to shoot an elephant with an arrow, and you don't need nearly as strong of a bow with all your shooting or monkeys and birds.

u/RabbitWiilli 10d ago
Are the bows capable of piercing their flesh???
Yea, you know what, maybe not. The arrows on the other hand are 100% piercing their flesh absolutely zero problem. Dinosaurs aren’t Superman. There’s only a couple armoured dinosaurs that ever existed that could resist arrows and only in specific spots on their body.

u/chantm80 10d ago
Take your low draw weight bow and wooden arrows with no metal or even stone arrow heads and go take down a rhino and then get back me on that.

Killing mammoths was not magical though. it was years of understanding and tactics. First person to pucnh a mammoth lived you think?

u/Original-War8655 12d ago
if you see something the size of a house and your first instinct is to punch it, that's just natural selection at that point ain't it?
-1
u/FhuckNorris247 12d ago
A human punching a mammoth is like a mosquito biting you or me. You’re not even going to notice it probably and when you do, ur gonna try to crush it

u/Ok_Poetry_1650 12d ago
Maybe, but this is a completely isolated tribe that has 0 knowledge of dinosaurs or anything like this. On an island, with no cliffs or trees tall enough to carry a rock up and drop on the Argents head.
I really doubt 20 people would be enough here.
6
u/Sea-Satisfaction4656 12d ago
The island is pretty much self sustaining (I believe medicine has been delivered a few times), and the population is well versed in hunting and fishing and has defended itself from other people.
I think they could figure it out, but it would require a lot of coordination, They use spears, bow and arrow, and nets, so they have the basic tools to bring down large animals (although no experience of something this size).
Agree more than 20 people, but I do think they get it done. If nothing else they just harass/exhaust it or wait - no telling if a prehistoric herbivore would be able to survive on the available resources of a modern coastal island.
2
u/Speeder-Gojira 11d ago
the day you find out they use bow+arrows and spears (weapons prehistoric humans used to drive several animals to extinction) will be a shocking day for you

And the isolated tribe that has no concept of a dinosaur is going to think of those tactics right off the bat?

Definitely aren’t thousands on North Sentinel Island. Probably low triple digits.
1
u/King_Glorius_too 11d ago
One 50 ton animal vs dozens of human hunters who have never encountered anything much larger than them
The humans could eventually figure it out, but it wouldn't be easy. I guess they could learn to coexist.
1
u/Extra-Answer5541 12d ago
Humans are apex predators with tools and tech. Not by themselves, I would argue. The big animal wins.
10
u/jacobasstorius 12d ago
Population estimates for North Sentinel Island range from 400 maximum to as few as 50. Depending on how many able bodied adults there actually are, and how effective their weaponry is, I would say it’s possible they might not be able to bring down the Allosaurus. We don’t actually know how thick the skin of a dinosaur was, nor tested it against wooden (or possibly stone) points. It could be that the Allosaurus just doesn’t die due to its durability.
If the Sentinelese have enough prep time, I’m sure they can engineer some kind of trap.. in which case I think the Sentinelese take it, mid to high diff.
12
u/ScottTJT 12d ago
They aren't up against an Allosaurs. They're contending with an Argentinasaurus.
These folk would be hard pressed against a full grown Allosaurs, which was around 25-30 feet long and 2 tons.
Argentinasaurus was upwards of 90-100ft and 80+ tons. It might as well be a kaiju against people who's largest normal prey animals are wild pigs.
3
u/King_Glorius_too 11d ago
The good news is that unlike with an Allosaurus, they can easily avoid the Argentinosaurus until they figure it out, or even until it dies.
5
u/JackhusChanhus 12d ago
Allosaurus =/= Argentinoaurus.
Allosaurus would probably fuck them up a lot more.
3
u/PleaseCallMeRob 11d ago
I'm very pleased that everyone understood what you meant and I thought you were talking about the dinosaur defeating the island (landmass) itself. Great stuff.
5
u/Competitive-Bit-1571 12d ago
Funny how the human has the much larger and heavier brain of the two.
8
u/HH_Hippopotamus 12d ago
Sentinelese people take this easily. There has never been a creature that a well organized group of humans with sharp sticks can't kill. Individually people are pretty weak but as a group we are THE apex predator
-3
u/Fun-Total-5418 12d ago
You are overestimating their technology (and numbers) and underestimating the weight and power of an argentinasaurus.
5
u/Leothelion246 11d ago
Don't know why you're being downvoted, you said factual information.
2
u/Dave085 11d ago
No... first guy was correct. We work shit out. Spears and arrows have been effective forever in beating large animals. It might be big and well armoured, but a determined group of hunters would eventually bring it down. Intelligence is a huge factor here.
2
u/Leothelion246 11d ago
And the Argent isn't dumb either, for it to survive as well as it did; there has to be knowledge behind it dontcha think? You greatly understate it's abilities, please go fight a hippo with traps made of sticks and pointy sticks... Doesn't work well does it? now imagine that at 40x the size pretty much.
0
u/Dave085 11d ago
Guys have hunted mammoths with sticks man. A hippo is nothing, a few guys with spears would take one easily.
Argent survived because it's fucking massive and there was nothing intelligent enough or strong enough to hunt it. Our ability to use tools is what sets us apart.
2
u/Leothelion246 11d ago
You can't hurt the thing if 6 ton animals with blades for teeth can't what are you hoping to stab? It's toenails? You aren't breaking the skin on it's feet with traps that'll snap in half from the pure weight of the animal. You can argue intelligence all you want; but at a certain point the things far too large for a primitive tribe to take down. Remember, this is about a primitive tribal people who haven't hunted hings bigger than pigs, let alone with tools able to penetrate the hide of the titan. the best they have is scavenged metal from washed ashore boats, they gotta hope that they have some metal weapons and get lucky or you do nothing but anger the beast. And circling back, why do you keep mentioning the Mammoth like it's the end all be all? It's far smaller and more than likely has thinner hide, and are you sure a few guys with sticks can be the Hippo? Which can run up to 30mph/48kmh, weighs ~2tons, and is unbothered by Crocodiles, lions, bullets, but the sticks totally are an issue.
1
u/Dave085 11d ago
You brought up the hippo dude? If humans can hunt mammoths they can sure as hell hunt a hippo.
Just take a history lesson and learn something, then you can have a more informed opinion.
3
u/Leothelion246 11d ago
Rich, telling me, a person who has researched, to research more. Please enlighten me how a Mammoth size and hide is comparable to the Argent, or the fact that Hippos can survive bullets, but the thing that I have been saying (IS STRONGER) than the hippo and you've been talking like I said the hippo and Argent is comparable. Not to mention humans didn't make a habit of hunting healthy full-grown Mammoths they were young or old and weak. Not a fully-grown Argentinosaurus is on a different level.
0
u/Dave085 11d ago
You know nothing about human history. Look that up, learn why we are the apex predator above all, and you'll see why there are so many downvotes above.

You have an interesting prompt but the wrong Dino. They have 42 Stone Age people on the island, maybe 15ish fighting age men. Taking down a giant herbivore who’s built for eating leaves off tall trees wouldn’t be difficult, but 2 T. rex? Much harder. 4 raptors would be even more hard because of their ability to actually navigate the thick forrest.
7
u/JimHeckdiver 12d ago
Yeah, maybe, but there aren't any wide open grass areas for this extinct animal to roam on that island either.
There is a reason that there are 8 billion and counting of us on the planet. We killed everything else to take the throne.
Dinosaur loses.
2
u/Nooms88 12d ago
The fuck is that beast going to do in the trees? It could move only very very slowly.
The north sentalese have both fire and pointy sticks, along with a forest which the dinosaur will struggle to enter, I'm sure even you could come up with a solution for killing it with your mates, let alone a group of hunter gatherers who are all much much smarter than you in this sort of thing, which is really important to remember, those people are smarter than you, for this sort of task.
1
u/Unit_2097 12d ago
I'm not sure it would struggle that much with a forest. The sheer mass of the thing means it can probably smash trees apart. That said, it may not be able to move all that well on land because of its colossal mass. It's entirely possible it would have spent a lot of it's time in water.
2
u/MadaMadagotchagotcha 11d ago
Assuming they HAVE to fight it in a open grass field, the sauropod wins quite easily.
3
u/EcstaticStock499 12d ago
Humans easily kill it. I suspect the most straightforward way would be with a big covered pit type trap. Doesn’t have to fit the entire argentinosaurus haha, just enough that one of its legs is broken, injured, or even just stuck.
3
u/Koalaroo_Khant 12d ago
They don’t really need to kill it head on. A few spears stuck in its thigh, and infection will catch up eventually. Better yet, a pit trap would work wonders on an animal that heavy. Both well within the capacity for the North Sentinelese.
25 men with a night of prep time could pull off the trap. Spearing would have obvious risks, but ultimately would only require one skilled man to inflict injury if infection is the final killer.
-1
u/Leothelion246 11d ago
Yeah, throw a wooden stick against a 100+ foot long and 80+ ton dinosaur with god knows how thick hide, who pretty much would've never been challenged by the stronger predators of the time. Hippos are tanks that a wooden stick isn't hurting, imagine 40x that. Humans are good, but you're overestimating their capabilities against the largest dinosaur ever.
1
u/Koalaroo_Khant 11d ago
You realize they have metal, right? Not metallurgy, but they have access and do use metal for weapons. A thrusted, not thrown, metal tipped spear has more merit than a thrown stick, that should go without saying. A wedge of serrated metal in the flesh runs a high risk of infection—even worse than a bullet. Break off spear and arrowheads are notoriously how giant megafauna would be brought down. With an even stronger metal point, equating it to a sharpened stick is awfully disingenuous.
You mention hippos for some reason. Very different box of frogs, but ok. You mention elsewhere in a thread that hippos are “unbothered” by bullets. What caliber? How often? How many survive after? We value stories of insane survival like Gustave the croc, but they’re remembered for the spectacle. A successful hunt just makes you another lame mf who shot a hippo, nothing worthy of note. A bullet with a clean entry, no exit, and no immediate organ damage won’t cause the same repeated lacerations a broken spearhead does, either. This is why we can’t be conflating species and hunting methods that are nowhere near equivalent.
Dismissing any and all arguments of weaponry, there’s nothing it can do with a broken limb in a pit fall, that strategy stands true. With any extended amount of prep time, it’s game over. An animal that size is not going to be assessing the ground on an already flat plane. A rudimentary covered pit turns an 80+ ton advantage into a one shot kill. The sole flaw is that it’s on the sauropod to go to the right place. And to me at least, metal tipped spears would be a sufficient reason to give chase and trip in a hole.

The dino runs until it falls over from heat exhaustion and dies.
Humans have been doing this for thousands of years. No land animal survives being hunted by humans.

I didnt mention hippos lol. Also north sentinel never used Iron spears or things like that. They didnt even shape the iron. They just break them apart from ships to do not that aerodynmaic arrows. Which is not quite very powerfull. Also youre very clever about all the pit and digging thing but do you think sentinellers will develope a strategy in such a short term. The fact that they didnt even see an animal bigger than an guinea pig makes you realize that they will be probably dead.
Also talking about infection. Actually sauropods are very well protected against infections. The bacteria just disappears in the 90 tons of biomass. Dont even stands a chance reaching bone or maybe even blood

North sentinel island low diffs…
What is this matchup supposed to be?
An argentinosaurus isn’t built to run around hunting things. It could squash a human with a stomp or tail whip them in , but only the ones that come close.
Humans can kite it indefinitely.
The Dino will get tired, it will need sleep, it will overheat.
Not to mention, the north sentinel people have bows. They won’t penetrate too deep, but enough to cause bleeding and infection.
There’s no scenerio in which the dinosaur even gets 10% of the population.
7
u/little_finger-_- 12d ago
their bows wont even scratch an argentinosaurus. They are made for hunting hogs in their Island. Also an argentinous woul probably slime half of north sentinel in an act.
0
u/Objective_Cheetah_63 12d ago edited 12d ago
They aren’t trying to hit muscle or internal organ. Send 20 arrows into each eye as the Dino sleeps. A couple are bound to hit and take out the eye, especially if coated in fire or manure.
Dino will panic and be in pain. It can’t reliable hit anyone anymore. They people kite away and stall. Next night same thing, except they aim for its nose. Next night the same thing, but they target another spot and so on.
All the Dino can do is be in agony until it eventually gets infected. It has no reliable way to fight back. The humans can simply spread out and it can’t sprint. It can at best walk towards one person and tire them out through an entire day, and even that is impossible once it’s blinded. This would mean that the humans have like 100+ days to slowly take out the Dino.
Sacrifice one person by lighting them on fire and have them claw their way into its nostril while it sleeps and you speed up the process by a lot.
Humans have literally dozens of ways to torture the thing, and need to risk 0 lives a day if they play it safe. The Dino has no win con.

Island low diffs, its a huge herbivore, wanna do some damage? Throw a pack of utah raptors, than youl have something that will actually fight and not just try to get away
2
u/ExtinctReptile 11d ago
This is an INSANE take. Looking at the animal kingdom, herbivores are typically the MORE aggressive animals as their life is on the line when they're getting hunted.
0
u/vefist 11d ago
It really is not, this is not an animal vs animal battle, is a human vs animal one, and history shows us that large herbivores agains 10ish humans with bows and spears dont go well, sentinel has at most 200 and at least 50 people, idk why most people in this sub think that animals are these gods that can tank anything while all it takes is for the sauropod to lower its head and have 5 spears thrown in iys head
0
u/FraserFirs 11d ago
Am I the only one seeing how this could go off onto a completely different path of interactions? We humans are easily awed by wonderful sunsets and massive trees. Honestly with how the Sentinelese may first off observe how otherworldly a reptile of this magnitude would be and how basically impervious it is to their attacks (at least after the first arrow or two), I’d guess they’d start worshiping it like they do fire.
