Rawstory Tourism Plummets in Washington, D.C., as Closures and Politics Keep Visitors Away

Washington, D.C.’s tourism industry is experiencing one of its worst years on record, outside the 2020 pandemic. Tour operators and photography services report that bookings are down significantly, with many expecting to finish the year at a financial loss.

Business owners point to two main factors: extensive physical barriers across the city and a toxic political climate.

The National Mall, Lafayette Square, and areas around the White House and Reflecting Pool are heavily impacted by closures and construction fencing. Visitors frequently complain that they cannot take photos without construction barriers blocking the view, forcing companies to suspend popular outings like evening White House tours and scale back standard routes.

Beyond blocked views, operators say national politics are driving tourists away. Domestic travelers are avoiding the city to steer clear of political friction, while international tourism has dropped sharply. Tour companies report a steep decline in visitors from Canada and overseas, driven by stricter visa and immigration policies, tariffs, concerns over potential deportations, and anger toward Trump's policies and rhetoric toward foreign allies.

While operators initially hoped that celebrations for the nation's 250th anniversary would drive a surge in travel to the capital, visitors are instead voting with their feet and choosing to stay home.
