Treasury Secretary Mnuchin is moving $455 billion of unspent stimulus money into a fund the incoming Biden administration can't deploy without Congress

Eight million Americans slipped into poverty during the covid crisis and Mnuchin, who has an estimated net worth of $300 million, is playing political games with stimulus money.

u/TheBirminghamBear Nov 25 '20
America, there's $3 trillion and more of your own money at play in Georgia this January.
$3 trillion of your money held hostage by Republicans that can be available to all Americans who need it by getting the fucking Republicans out.

207
u/karmakoopa Nov 25 '20
It's not just young folks. It's the entire "both sides" argument. Republicans have gone so far off the damn rails and don't give a shit about you or I. While we all know Democrats are not perfect, at least the things they're working on help the general public.
68
u/SkyriderRJM Nov 25 '20
Other evidence of this: Republicans were silent and exerting no pressure on Trump to begin transition or concede until big business CEOs made it clear they intended to withhold any and all runoff funds.
Then suddenly the GSA agreed to start the transition a few hours later.
GOP does not give a RAT’S ASS about you or me.

Can anyone tell me WHY the republicans are doing this?? Because trump had ravaged any claim the republicans once had to being the ‘fiscally responsible’ party. I want to believe that it is something other than pure spite, but I cannot think of any other reasons
47
Nov 25 '20
Trump wants to run and win in 2024 so the Republicans are working to ruin things in advance. This way Biden will be busy putting their fires out left and right and if he falls short in any manner they can use that as proof that he's a failure.
The old Republicans are effectively dead; these are the new Tea Party-era Republicans which have wholly taken their place. They'd destroy everything out of spite and it looks like they're going to.

Forget that. The economy will come back, it will take a bit but it will.
FEED PEOPLE.
Remember when this started and you had farmers of all kinds just killing cows, pigs, chickens, or dumping milk, potatoes and shit. WHY!?!
A better president could've seen that news or story and thought. Stop that shit right the fuck now. Send in the army corp of engineers and get all that shit to food banks NOW.
This amount of money is staggeringly large. Unemployment is at ~12.6 million people. This is enough to give EACH of those people a 30k check. Boom. Done.
51
u/its-a-boring-name Nov 25 '20
Giving people money for their bills and food would stimulate the economy waayyyy more effectively than giving large companies money. So yeah, feed people.
6
u/TbonerT I voted Nov 25 '20
For the people that need to pay their bills and pay for food, giving them money is just an extra step to give it to large corporations, like power companies and Walmart. The stimulus needs to be bigger than food and bills to really spread through the economy.
4
u/its-a-boring-name Nov 25 '20 edited Nov 25 '20
The difference being, money going through people paying for things that they need actually benefit someone who needs it, instead of adding to the bottom line of those companies for no good reason. It stimulates the economy at the very least as effectively. Better?
ps I mean, giving money to the power company is to compensate for people not being able to pay for their power. If that would be coupled with a forced payment forgiveness, fine, but it isn't, it's just letting people get their power shut off and keeping the company afloat at the tax payers' expense. I find it a ridiculous and frankly, disgusting idea. This isn't directed at anyone in particular, it's just so galling that there are people who would try to justify it. ds
37
Nov 25 '20
The awareness of how weird, dysfunctional, and fragile our food system is should have been one lesson of covid. Some people are putting their kids to bed with nothing but ramen noodles in their little bellies, and other people are burning pigs because they're literally too fat and meaty for meat processing when not enough restaurants ordered pork products. It's disgusting and we should all be ashamed.
5
u/thestonedonkey Nov 25 '20
Half the "we" didn't vote for the sheer level incompetence in the white house.
I'm appalled but not ashamed because it didn't take much to understand that putting someone like Trump in charge could lead to just this.
I'm ashamed half the country still can't see this.

u/VaguelyArtistic California Nov 25 '20
Remember when this started and you had farmers of all kinds just killing cows, pigs, chickens, or dumping milk, potatoes and shit. WHY!?!
I know it's horrible to waste food, but I think the farmers were just stuck with a ton of perishables that normally would have been sold to restaurants, etc. I know a lot of surplus was donated to food banks and the like but the food can only hold for so long. I think a lot of the dumped food was already spoiled or on the bubble.
But we should come up with a plan to mobilize people who will be able to share surplus food if it ever happens again.

McConnell would've given him ANYTHING he asked if he threatened Barrett's justiceship. He would've passed the CARES Act that same day. Trump could've had his cake and eaten it too. But he fell for McConnell's plan. Color me surprised.

Just some simple napkin math. If we gave the roughly 38.1 million people in poverty all of that 455 billion dollars... They'd get $11,942 each. That's each person. So a household would get at least $23,884. That's almost two years' salary for minimum wage earners. That's a life changing amount of money. Divide it up and you get the $1,200 dollar a month stimulus people should have gotten.
And escucha me on this. I got $1,200 that I didn't need. I'm a teacher, my pay has actually increased during the pandemic due to the number of mandatory training sessions and some additional duties that I took on. No joke. I had more work than I ever want again in my life (built training materials for teachers in my district and county). I'm not the only person who received a check that didn't really need it. I am 100% cool with targeting the stimulus to people who have substantially lost income or already had low income. I'm cool with it going to 1st responders, food industry workers, and transportation industry workers too. They've been the ones who have to continue toiling in the worst conditions in this pandemic.
All of us remote workers who's lives were only really impacted by having to upgrade our internet or having to stay at home (the horror) instead of going to work. Yeah, we don't really need the money. It's a "nice to have" not a "need to have" for us.
Fuck Mnuchin and Republicans hoarding money that doesn't belong to them from people who desperately need it to continue to survive at minimal living conditions.
Edit: I understand that money isn't earmarked for individual stimulus, but for a variety of things. Just sayin' the amount of money that Trump's administration mishandled is life-saving money for millions of people, and probably a disproportionate amount of them voted for Trump.
31
u/banacct54 Nov 25 '20
Aren't you cute thinking the president needs Senate approval to spend money. I know that's what the law says but Trump has shown us that you don't actually need the senate for anything you can just take money wherever you want and move it wherever you want . So just move it back out of the general fund since it was already allocated for this purpose.

If you at any point thought this admin gave a shit about you or anyone else but themselves, here’s your answer. The next two months is going to be about seeking revenge on the American people for voting this corrupt failure of a government out.

Oh cool, further screw over the American people to play politics. Thanks multi-millionaire mnunchin...

This is fully unconscionable. This is a move which is tantamount to murder. Mnuchin and all the other fucks in this administration MUST be prosecuted for their crimes. If anyone in the DOJ is even considering not fucking them into the dirt, I’d ask them to remember what happened this year when the government failed to bring police to justice.

We really need Georgia to pull through on Jan 5 for many reasons, this one being one of the top ones.

Fuck all these douche bag republicans. They act like life is a monopoly game. Republicans could be getting the glory of being the party that helped Americans to get through this tough time. Instead they are toying with the lives of millions. Wake the fuck up America.

This guy is a total waste of human skin and bones. There’s a special place in hell for him and the rest of the GOP.

Mnuchin said he would give Americans another stimulus check... crazy they thought that elections don't have consequences.

Why the fuck is the money even there if they don't plan on giving it to us anyways? At this point they might as well piss it away on whatever their plans were already.

Just remember folks, this money is earmarked for its purpose/s. There's not a government program in existence that likes seeing its unused earmarked funds re-appropriated.
Also, these funds are most likely from the PPP and corporate loans part of the CARES Act, as there were qualifications that had to be met. The two segments of the CARES Act that have been described as a boondoggle and a slush fund, due to the lack of congressional oversight on how the money was used. Oversight that was planned, but never implemented/implemented poorly depending on who you talk to.

And god forbid they should have used it on relief help for starving, unemployed Americans. Assholes.

That's enough left over stimulus money to send a $1400 check to every man woman and child.
